Tony Blair, the Iraq war and the international league of war criminals
Chris Marsden
December 22, 2009 – …On the same day that the warrant against Livni was cancelled, the BBC broadcast a television interview with former Prime Minister Tony Blair. In it, Blair was asked if he would still have supported the invasion of Iraq in 2003 if he had known that the Iraqi regime did not possess “weapons of mass destruction,” as his government claimed at the time. Blair at first skirted the question, but then said it would have made no difference. The issue of WMD was only one of his concerns, he stated. “It was the notion of him [Saddam Hussein] as a threat to the region, the fact of how that region was going to change whilst he was there” that had motivated his actions, Blair said. Even without WMD, “I would still have thought it right to remove him,” he continued. “I mean—obviously, you would have had to use and deploy different arguments, about the nature of the threat.” Blair went on to make clear that he had decided on a policy of pre-emptive war against a regime that had committed no hostile act with the aim of securing regime change. He told his interviewer that the issue at stake was whether the region would “evolve” in “the right way.” Blair’s statements are grounds for his arraignment on charges of war crimes. In a legal case, they could be held up as prima facie evidence that he and his allies in the Bush administration are guilty of planning and carrying out a war of aggression…

Afghanistan: Karzai picks cabinet of US stooges and warlord cronies
By Bill Van Auken
December 22, 2009 – Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai announced his second-term cabinet last Saturday, retaining roughly half of his incumbent ministers, including those with the closest ties to Washington. Also included in the lineup are figures tied to Afghan warlords who helped him rig the presidential election last August. The cabinet selection was closely watched by Washington and the other Western powers that are contributing troops to the eight-year-old occupation. Following a presidential election marked by wholesale fraud and a decree granting Karzai another term in the face of an aborted second round vote, Western officials looked to the cabinet announcement as an opportunity for the Afghan president to do something to legitimize his regime and distance himself from its rampant corruption…

Taliban Claims Control Over 80 Percent of Afghanistan
Insurgents Scramble to Establish Rival Government
Jason Ditz
December 22, 2009 – As the US attempts to strengthen its own government of choice in Afghanistan, they are in a race not just against time, but against Taliban forces which are increasingly setting up credible alternative governments. Once seen as something relegated to the more remote border provinces, this seems to be a nationwide phenomenon now, and the Taliban insists that it actually has a controlling presence in around 80 percent of the country…

A Reunion. 2
Layla Anwar
December 22, 2009 – I have finally come round to finishing this post. Finishing is a big word, there is no end here…nothing but a vicious circle that no one seems to be able to escape from… I don’t quite understand why I have been willfully procrastinating about this post. I mean, I’ve already written about “hard” issues before. All of my posts are “hard” issues, yet I feel such reticence when it comes to writing about this particular relative and our meeting… After all, this is not the first relative who has been through the grinder, the meat mincer of the Occupation… R. went through it too, and I even posted the pictures of his black, red and green body on this blog, I called it the map of Iraq…

The WMD evidence Blair ignored
David Lowry
December 22, 2009 – Tony Blair’s self-serving assertion that he would have found a pretext to invade Iraq even if he had known Saddam Hussein had not possessed WMD is another example of the ex-PM distorting the truth over Iraq. Blair knew Saddam had no WMD at least six years before he colluded with George Bush to illegally invade Iraq. This was reported originally in US magazine Newsweek in its March 3 2003 edition, but it then disappeared from the pre-invasion public debate. The evidence came from Lieutenant-General Hussein Kamel, the former director of Iraq’s Military Industrialisation Corporation, which was in charge of Iraq’s weapons programme…

Another Israeli Crime Against Humanity: Israel’s On-Going War on Palestinian Patients
Reham Alhelsi
December 22, 2009 – 38 years old Walid Madi died after being prevented by the Israeli occupation army from leaving the besieged Gaza Strip to get urgently needed medical care. Madi is the 366 Palestinian patient to die as a result of the siege imposed on Gaza by Israel since June 2007. Since then, Israel had only allowed a very limited amount of essentials to enter the Strip, which is no way near enough to cover the needs of the one and a half million Palestinians held as hostages by Israel. According to various international and human rights organizations these one and a half million Palestinians suffer from a sharp shortage of food, medical supplies and fuel. The situation got worse with the Israeli war on Gaza last year during which the Israeli army attacked the besieged unarmed civilian population of Gaza and committed war crimes that resulted in the murder of over 1400 Palestinians and wounding thousands, many of whom are handicapped for life..

The Privatization of War: Scahill reports 121,000 contractors in Afghanistan
PULSE
December 22, 2009 – During an interview with Riz Khan on December 21st Jeremy Scahill reported that the Obama administration has surpassed the Bush era’s privatization of war, having nearly doubled the number of security contractors in Afghanistan over the past several months. Amongst the contracting firms who remain in Afghanistan is Blackwater (now operating under the name XE) – a firm that Scahill describes as “one of the most powerful private actors in the so called War on Terror.” ..

Addameer: No peace agreement until political prisoners released
Report, Addameer
December 22, 2009 – Palestinian political prisoners must be released, categories of “security detainees” must be cancelled and “political status” must be granted if peace between Israel and the Palestinians is to be achieved. “Reaching the ‘No-Peace’ Agreement: The Role of Palestinian Prisoner Releases in Permanent Status Negotiations,” a briefing paper from Addameer, examines Israel’s failure to comply with the bilateral agreements regarding the release of Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli detention for their involvement in activities related to the ongoing belligerent Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory. It concludes that prisoner releases can be instrumental in achieving a lasting peace, but only if prisoners themselves are recognized as political partners in the process…

Video: Israel ‘outsourcing’ the occupation
Aljazeera.net
December 22, 2009 – Concern is growing among Palestinians in the occupied West Bank as Israel steps up its use of private security contractors to patrol Palestinian territories. Guantanamo ‘hell on Earth’, says Somali detainee
The News International
December 22, 2009 – A Somali just home from eight years in the US jail at Guantanamo Bay told AFP the prison was “hell on Earth”, and alleged torture there had scarred some of his fellow inmates. Mohamed Saleban Bare, who arrived in his hometown of Hargeisa on Saturday, said he was innocent of any charges that would have caused security forces to arrest him in Pakistan in 2001 and transfer him to the US jail via Afghanistan… “No human rights convention stands in Guantanamo. Interrogators force inmates to confess crimes they didn’t commit by torturing them and sullying their religion,” Bare said. “They would desecrate the Holy Qura’an and raise the volume of their music during prayers,” he recounted. Bare said the US authorities had never told him why he was arrested…

Saddam Hussein the Human
Hussein Anwar, The Mesopotamian
December 22, 2009 – This is not the type of post you are going to read often, not something you read in any other place, not something you hear from people surrounding the President nor his family, this post is a bit personal. This post is an eye opener for the reader to understand Saddam Hussein the human, Saddam Hussein the person responsible for Iraq, Saddam Hussein the emotional person, Saddam Hussein carrying the burdens of the Iraqi people, Saddam Hussein a man with feelings like you and I…

Failing Gaza: No rebuilding, No recovery, No more excuses
A report one year after Operation Cast Lead (Full Text)
Oxfam International, Amnesty Intl UK, CAFOD, Christian Aid, MAP, diakonia, Mercy Corps and more
December 22, 2009 – A year on from the devastation of the Gaza strip by the Israeli army, a consortium of 16 aid agencies, including Amnesty International and Oxfam, have released a report on the meagre progress in Gaza’s reconstruction caused by Israel’s continuing blockade. The report, ‘Failing Gaza’ states: ‘The Israeli government’s blockade, imposed in 2007 after Hamas took control of Gaza (though long preceded by regular closures and restrictions), not only forbids most Gazans from leaving or exporting anything to the outside world, but also only permits the import of a narrowly-restricted number of basic humanitarian goods. Desperately-needed reconstruction materials are not counted amongst these. So the civilian population and the United Nations and aid agencies that aim to help them are prohibited from importing materials like cement or glass for reconstruction in all but a handful of cases. …

Guantánamo Beyond Guantánamo
by Jonathan Hafetz and Mark Denbeaux
December 22, 2009 – President Obama’s planned transfer of some Guantánamo Bay detainees to Thomson, Illinois, might bring the administration nearer to its goal of closing the infamous off-shore prison. But, from all indications, it will do little to end the unlawful detention system Guantánamo embodies. Last month, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the United States would bring charges in federal court against five individuals accused of helping plot the 9/11 attacks, including alleged mastermind Khaled Shaikh Mohammed. Unlike the prisoners brought to Thomson, these men will be transferred from Guantánamo to the United States to face trial in accordance with American justice…

Insanity Offense: Even the Mad Must Not Speak the Truth
Chris Floyd
December 22, 2009 – This sounds like something Mikhail Bulgakov might have written, deep in the sinister phantasmagoria of the Stalinist night. From the Israeli service ynetnews.com: One of the large mental health hospitals in Israel was recently surprised to receive a young, good-looking patient in a psychotic state who was accompanied by a personal security guard, Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Sunday. The doctors, who asked why the woman was accompanied by a guard, were shocked to learn that she was a Mossad agent and that the security guard was not assigned to her in order assure her safety or protect her life, but to ensure that she not reveal any state secrets in her shaky mental state…

Lithuania hosted secret CIA prisons
BBC News
December 22, 2009 – The CIA used at least two secret detention centres in Lithuania after the 11 September 2001 terror attacks on the US, a Lithuanian inquiry has found. The report by a Lithuanian parliamentary committee says that in 2005 and 2006 CIA chartered planes were allowed to land in Lithuania. It says that no Lithuanian officials were allowed near the aircraft, nor were they told who was on board. Poland and Romania hosted similar CIA “black sites”, media reports say…

Bahar: Egypt’s wall signals new Israeli attack on Gaza
Ma’an News
December 22, 2009 – Palestinian Legislative Council member Ahmad Bahar called for an urgent meeting between all parliamentary blocks on Wednesday to discuss the consequences of the Egyptian wall being built along Gaza’s southern border. “The construction of Egypt’s wall is a sign of an impending attack on Gaza by Israel,” Bahar said. The wall, 10 kilometers long and 24 meters deep, will run along the Gaza-Egypt border, and aims to cut off the passage into Egypt of hundreds of smuggling tunnels which have been for two years Gaza’s lifeline as Israel’s siege continues…

Warring on the psyche
Eva Barlett, In Gaza
December 22, 2009 – While i am not Palestinian and have not lived my life under occupation, over the year here in besieged, massacred Gaza, the sound of israeli F-16 warplanes became normal too quickly. Even initially, after just one month, i stopped looking up and the heartbeat stayed regular. explosive sonic booms and bombings aside, the sound of a warplane is unique, one i’d never heard prior to gaza. one that many of us tucked safely away in the invading, occupying or abetting countries never have to know… unless we are part of those occupations, invasions and ‘peace-keeping missions’ abroad. So now, over a year after first hearing the roar of israeli fighter planes crowding and polluting gaza’s skies, after collectively enduring a 23 day onslaught from the world’s 4th most powerful military –and enduring the sound and psychological warfare of that massacre –it may be surprising that the planes’ roars can still startle.

Egyptian Officials Say They Will Not Allow Gaza Freedom March To Cross Border
Saed Bannoura
December 22, 2009 – The 1,360 peace activists from around the world currently on their way to Egypt will find the border to the Gaza Strip closed to them, say Egyptian officials. The Gaza Freedom March Steering Committee said Monday that the Egyptian Foreign Ministry informed them that the Rafah border will be closed over the coming weeks, into January, citing escalating tensions on the Gaza-Egypt border. The Ministry did not give details, but the ‘escalating tension’ is likely a reference to a Palestinian attack on an Egyptian border guard several days ago…

Farming banned on Gaza lands affected by ‘chemical weapons’
Ma’an News
December 22, 2009 – Farming and grazing in certain areas bombed by the Israeli military during last winter’s war on Gaza has been banned by the Strip’s Ministry of Agriculture for fear of contamination by toxic chemicals, a report released Monday revealed. The ministry said the ban was implemented after inspecting sites where Israeli aircraft dropped phosphorus bombs and other materials it said could be “radioactive, toxic, and carcinogenic.”…

What is the Aim of the Gaza Freedom March? – Interview
By Bianca Zammit – Gaza
December 22, 2009 – As the days of December 2009 draw in, two events which each have a role to play in world peace draw closer. The first is on the 27th and is commemorating the start of the 22 day attacks on Gaza, an operation which targeted unarmed civilians, schools, hospitals, journalists and emergency staff. The second, The Gaza Freedom March will take place on the 31st. The Gaza Freedom March is a historic moment, the magnitude of which has not been seen in Palestine since 1967. Chiseled on the lessons learnt from South Africa’ struggle for liberation against apartheid and from Gandhi’ Satyagraha approach during the campaign for India’ independence, the Gaza Freedom March is walking in the same shoes…
