Women the world should not forget
Hussein Anwar
December 17, 2009 – … Since you rape, torture and murder people, and these people have families, relatives, tribes and many people connected to them in one way or another…HOW CAN YOU NOT EXPECT THEM TO FIGHT YOU BACK? HOW?…Would you not fight back if it were your mother, wife, sister or daughter raped 17 times and then unconscious for 48 hours? or asking for assistance to commit suicide or raped before your eyes while you are tied to a wall? WOULD YOU NOT FIGHT BACK? WOULD YOU NOT JOIN YOUR COUNTRY’S RESISTANCE? You know the answer don’t you?…I bet you do bastards. Here are three posts I picked from three different sites..

Afghan resistance statement
American War Strategy in the Words of Brown
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
December 17, 2009 – The other day, British Premier Brown showed up in south Kandahar out of a sudden in a press conference. He told the participants that Britain supported America’s new strategy because it was aimed at weakening the Taliban. He said, the current resistance in Afghanistan would spiral down during the next 18 moths and the Kabul Administration would take over the charge of security in the country. With surrogate Karzai, the Head of puppet regime in Kabul standing beside him, Mr. Brown opined about his pipe dream and puppet Karzai was moving his head in the affirmative all along. However, both of them brazenly and shamelessly ignored the fact that they went all-out, using war stratagems, tactics and brutalities in the past eight years but availed them nothing…

Telling Lies about Sheikh Jarrah
Live From Occupied Palestine
December 17, 2009 – In June 2008, I wrote an article called ‘Telling Lies about Bil’in’ in which I outlined how the Israeli military, assisted by Israel’s corporate Zionist media lied about a peaceful non-violent demonstration in the Palestinian village of Bil’in, depicting it as ‘violent’ in order to justify the Israeli Occupation Forces use of unrestrained violence against the peaceful demonstrators. After 42 years of attempting to justify its brutal occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, the Israeli Occupation Forces lies have become a matter of course. This week the Israeli Occupation Forces and the Israeli police once again engaged in the violent suppression of a non-violent demonstration and then lied about their actions. The only difference this time around was that it took place in Sheikh Jarrah in Occupied East Jerusalem, rather than in Bil’in in the Occupied West Bank. In the last year more than 50 Palestinians living in the Karm Al-Ja’ouni neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah have been left homeless as a result of being forcibly evicted from their homes by settlers, supported by Israeli occupation forces…

Defending Palestinian Food Sovereignty against Occupation and Expulsion
Palestinian grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign
December 17, 2009 – …Nearly 60 years have passed since the Israeli occupation successfully stole the Palestinian name “Jaffa”, along with the city, for the economic and policy interests it provides. Today the “Israeli” name – a colonial brand that continues to thrive in the 21st century – is present worldwide in supermarkets and households on produce from stolen Palestinian land (and labor). In this way, we see the link between the 1948 expulsion and takeover of Palestinian lands, the establishment of agricultural settlements in the 1967 occupied areas, the annexation of the lands of nearly 300 villages for the Apartheid Wall, the suffocating closure of Gaza as produce rots away at sealed “crossings”, and the signing of peace and agricultural agreements for a thriving Israeli agro-industry…

Family tells details of Israeli raid on Ni’lin
Ma’an News
December 17, 2009 – Israeli troops entered the village of Ni’lin at 3am Wednesday morning, one of five villages that were raided overnight. They entered the home of the Kan’an family, beat their daughter and destroyed parts of the home. Last week there were 16 similar raids across the West Bank. Victims from the Ni’lin raid gave an account of what is now a regular experience…

Israel stops Palestinian children’s birthday celebrations “for political considerations”
Middle East Monitor
December 17, 2009 – Israeli occupation forces have prevented Palestinians in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of occupied Jerusalem from celebrating the birthdays of two children, Iyad Algoj and Rani Arashq. The order came from the “Minister of Domestic Security” and cited political reasons, alleging that this celebration is part of the activities linked to “Jerusalem the capital of Arab culture 2009". An eyewitness who did not want to be named said, “About 100 members of the Israeli security forces surrounded the venue of the celebration, stopped the activities – including the clown – and used force to stop the music.” Children were apparently traumatised by what happened, he added…

AI: Iran executes alleged juvenile offender
Amnesty International
17 December 2009 – Amnesty International has condemned the execution of an alleged juvenile offender in Iran on Thursday, at least the fifth such execution in 2009. Mosleh Zamani was hanged at Dizel Abad Prison at 4am, along with four other unidentified prisoners. He was sentenced to death in 2006 for allegedly raping his girlfriend when he was 17…Amnesty International had also learnt that Mosleh Zamani’s alleged victim had asked that his life be spared, stating that they had had consensual sex. The Appeal Court judge refused to take that into consideration, stating instead that Mosleh Zamani should be executed in order to “set an example” to other young Iranians…

An Open Letter to Pacifica Radio’s KPFA Management
Subject: A “truth emergency” over censorship at Pacifica’s flagship station
by Stephen Lendman
December 17, 2009 – By implementing early December budget and staff cuts, KPFA’s management targeted its award-winning Flashpoints Radio for extinction, sullied the name of its founder, Lew Hill, and defiled fundamental First Amendment freedoms without which no others are possible. On April 15, 1949, Hill went on the air saying: “This is KPFA, listener-sponsored radio in Berkeley” and launched America’s first independent, listener-supported, “people’s radio” as a sanctuary for free speech, dissent, alternative voices, social justice, and human dignity unlike anything previously heard…

Chaos and violence continue, the Iraq Inquiry decides it’s all about them, the US House prepares to give even more money to the Pentagon, Starting with War Hawk Tony Blair, former prime minister of England and lapdog to George W. Neil Clark (First Post via Information Clearing House) notes that the Blair War Crimes Foundation has “an online petition addressed to the President of the UN General Assembly and the UK Attorney General, which lists 14 specific complaints relating to the Iraq war, including ‘deceit and conspiracy for war, and providing false news to incite passions for war’ and violations of the Geneva Conventions by the occupying powers.”…

Political Colors.
Layla Anwar
December 17, 2009 – I keep receiving — questions, claims, “accusations”, and sometimes insults like “hey you Baathist bitch “ either asking me if I am Baathist or “accusing” me of being one, as if that is an accusation of some crime or hoping that I will feel insulted by being called one, as if being a Baathist is some kind of a political abomination… I’ve said it before and will repeat it again . I am NOT a Baathist. I have NEVER belonged to ANY political party. But wait a minute here, even if I were a Baathist, what’s the big deal and where is the problem ? I see no problem at all. At least the Baathists did something for Iraq. At least the Baathists developed Iraq into an advanced modern nation state, nationalized its oil and used its resources wisely, constructed its infrastructure, roads, bridges, industry, agriculture, built excellent hospitals, schools and top notch universities, provided free health care and education, trained and developed more academics, scientists, doctors, engineers and high cadres, invested in public campaigns for women’s rights, literacy, the eradication of disease, the eradication of poverty through social reforms and progressive laws, reformed the agricultural system, safeguarded the cultural and historical heritage of the country…

Afghan resistance statement
Remarks of Z. Mujahid, Spokesman of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Regarding the Invaders Recent Brutalities.
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
December 17, 2009 – The public of the world, particularly, our country men know that the invading forces usually detain miserable Afghans under various pretexts and then mercilessly torture them. These atrocities have been continuing at the hand of the invaders for the past eight years. Besides these, there are other savageries being committed by the invading forces. Even mass murder has been committed by the cut- throat troops. But the so-called advocates of the human rights and the international community have always turned a blind eye to all these crimes. They have never put out a protest nor issued any word of condemnation, despite that the atrocities have been continuing unabatedly. Here, we present our readers with facts about the following gruesome events…

Childhood in ruins
Harriet Sherwood
December 17, 2009 – …But the 23-day war is only part of the story. The long history of Israeli assaults on Gaza, and the two-and-a-half-year-long blockade of the territory after Hamas took power, has exacted a toll on almost every aspect of children’s lives: schooling, housing, leisure time, what they eat, what they wear, how they see the future. A Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP) survey earlier this year found that about 75% of children over the age of six were suffering from one or more symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder. Almost one in 10 ticked off every criteria. “The majority of children suffer many psychological and social consequences,” says Dr Hasan Zeyada, a psychologist with GCMHP. “Insecurity and feelings of helplessness and powerlessness are overwhelming. We observed children becoming more anxious – sleep disturbances, nightmares, night terror, regressive behaviour such as clinging to parents, bed wetting, becoming more restless and hyperactive, refusal to sleep alone, all the time wanting to be with their parents, overwhelmed by fears and worries. Some start to be more aggressive.”…

COLLATERAL DAMAGE
by Flora Nicoletta
December 17, 2009 – In Gaza City, through the Israeli war last winter, Abdel Latif Abu Kersh-Abu Shadi was sitting most of the time in his garden at the foot of the 4-storey family building in Ahmad El-Shoukeiri Street, northern Beach camp. Abu Shadi, 59, a 1948 refugee from Beit Jerja, was till a few years ago a legal advisor in the Ministry of Agriculture of the now defunct Fatah government. A painter and artist, he learned how to work copper in the past by observing an Israeli prison guard when he was jailed for his activities in the resistance as a PFLP militant. Already before the Israeli war Abu Shadi had built a clay oven in his garden to make bread because the power cuts made impossible to bake bread at home. In addition the bakeries were closed and only some flour was available through the war. For 23 days, starting on Saturday 27 December 2008, it was inferno: the fire was coming from the sky, the Mediterranean sea and the ground…

Obama seeks Guantánamo-style prison on US soil
By Bill Van Auken
December 17, 2009 – With its decision to purchase a state prison in rural Illinois, the Obama administration is preparing to recreate the essential features of the infamous military prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba—indefinite detention without charges and trials by military commissions—on US soil. This latest move has exposed Obama’s pledge to close down the prison at the US military base in Cuba as an empty gesture. In substance, the administration is adopting the criminal practices of the Bush administration as its own, while seeking to legitimize them through legislation and empty rhetoric about American “values and ideals.”…

The international league of war criminals
Chris Marsden
December 17, 2009 – The issuing of a British arrest warrant for former Israeli Foreign Minister and current leader of the opposition Tzipi Livni is only the latest event confirming an international body of legal opinion that Israel should be tried for war crimes over its treatment of the Palestinians. Livni was a member of the war cabinet during Operation Cast Lead, the offensive against Gaza between December 27, 2008 and January 18 this year. Some 1,400 Palestinians—the majority of them civilians, including 400 women and children—were killed, at least 5,000 people were injured, and 21,000 homes and other vital infrastructure were destroyed…

Stunning Statistics About the War Every American Should Know
By Jeremy Scahill
December 17, 2009 – A hearing in Sen. Claire McCaskill’s Contract Oversight subcommittee on contracting in Afghanistan has highlighted some important statistics that provide a window into the extent to which the Obama administration has picked up the Bush-era war privatization baton and sprinted with it. Overall, contractors now comprise a whopping 69% of the Department of Defense’s total workforce, “the highest ratio of contractors to military personnel in US history.” That’s not in one war zone—that’s the Pentagon in its entirety. In Afghanistan, the Obama administration blows the Bush administration out of the privatized water. According to a memo [PDF] released by McCaskill’s staff, “From June 2009 to September 2009, there was a 40% increase in Defense Department contractors in Afghanistan. During the same period, the number of armed private security contractors working for the Defense Department in Afghanistan doubled, increasing from approximately 5,000 to more than 10,000.”…

Kunduz: Is the German army empowered to carry out targeted killings?
By Peter Schwarz
December 17, 2009 – Over the course of the past few weeks, the German government as well as opposition parties have systematically deceived the German population over the real background to the September 4 airstrike near the Afghan city of Kunduz, which killed up to 142 persons. It has now been established that German army colonel Georg Klein gave the order for the strike with the deliberate intention of killing the large number of people in the vicinity of two hijacked tankers bogged down in a sandbank. The government was aware of this fact from the outset, and the parliamentary opposition parties had been informed by November 3 at the latest. Nevertheless, all of these parties claimed up until last weekend that the bombing was aimed exclusively at the tankers and that the many victims were merely inadvertent “collateral damage.”…

A Moment of Truth With Christians In Palestine
Kawther Salam
December 17, 2009 – Here is a brief of the Kairos Palestine document, which was signed on Dec. 11 1009 in Bethlehem city by a group of Palestinian Christians representing a variety of churches, and whose full text was published at World Council of Churches website. This document was published nowhere in the western media, and there is little hope that the Catholic church, which presents itself as the defenders of all Christians in the Middle East, and other churches of Christian denomination, will take up this issue. If you are the member of a Christian church of any denomination, please disseminate this information as widely as possible…

Go back unto death: Life in postwar Gaza
Ma’an News
December 17, 2009 – In one corner of Salah Samouni’s modest living room hangs a “martyr poster” – a customary honor printed for those killed in all Israeli attacks, in the West Bank and Gaza over the years. On the Samouni poster, the 29 faces stare back from eternity, from Muhammad Helmi Samouni, age six months, to Rizqa Muhammad Samouni, age 55. It was this oversize poster that Salah Samouni brought with him to the public hearing held by the UN Fact Finding Mission led by Richard Goldstone in Gaza City in June. Helmi and Salah Samouni spoke to Ma’an in September, nine months after the war, in one of the remaining houses of the Samouni family. The rest were destroyed during Israel’s war on Gaza in December and January. We sat on hard plastic chairs while a pot of thick Arabic coffee was served…

Up to 56,000 more contractors likely for Afghanistan, congressional agency says
By Walter Pincus, Washington Post Staff Writer
December 17, 2009 – The surge of 30,000 U.S. troops into Afghanistan could be accompanied by a surge of up to 56,000 contractors, vastly expanding the presence of personnel from the U.S. private sector in a war zone, according to a study by the Congressional Research Service. CRS, which provides background information to members of Congress on a bipartisan basis, said it expects an additional 26,000 to 56,000 contractors to be sent to Afghanistan. That would bring the number of contractors in the country to anywhere from 130,000 to 160,000…

India: Was Mumbai suspect a double agent for US?
By Huma Yusuf
December 17, 2009 – The Indian press is abuzz with news that Indian Home Ministry officials have said they are investigating whether Pakistani-American terror suspect David Coleman Headley was working as a “double agent.” Indian officials reportedly raised questions about Mr. Headley’s links with US intelligence agencies – even as another terror suspect accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks was denied bail by a US federal court. These latest and widely-publicized accusations against Headley are expected to put pressure on India’s ruling Congress Party, which has emphasized closer ties with the US as part of its foreign policy…

To Schlep Them to Justice in Safety
Gilad Atzmon
December 17, 2009 – …Addressing the recent arrest warrant issued against former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni in England, Yaalon said he warned former British Prime Minister Tony Blair more than two years ago about the “flawed policy in respect to arrest warrants against myself and other senior Israeli officials.” Yaalon probably doesn’t realise how vulnerable Blair’s situation in Britain is at the moment. Blair is not exactly a name that buys legitimacy in this country at this point in time. In his interview Yaalon maintained “we need to tell the Brits that we’re in the same boat, as their commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan clearly say.” Yaalon is partially correct. If to be precise Blair, Ehud Barak, Olmert, Yaalon, and Livni are indeed pushed together in the same symbolic boat, the boat that may eventually dock in The Hague for a very long while…

US drones hacked by Iraqi insurgents
Ewen MacAskill
December 17, 2009 – One of America’s most sophisticated weapons in the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the unmanned drone, has been successfully penetrated by insurgents using software available on the internet for $26 (£16). Insurgents in Iraq intercepted live video feeds from the drones being relayed back to a US controller and revealing potential targets. A US official said the flaw was identified and fixed in the past 12 months. The problem only came to light after the US found many hours’ worth of videotaped recordings on militant laptops late last year and earlier this year…

Making a Killing: The Canada-Israel Military-Industrial Partnership
by Richard Sanders
The following are major excerpts from an article written by Richard Sanders in the wake of Israel’s murderous assault on Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009. The article explains how Canada has been contributing to the Israeli military machine. It was published as part of the campaign by the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) against CANSEC 2009, Canada’s largest military industry trade show. Despite widespread opposition, the arms bazaar took place in Ottawa May 27-28, 2009…

Australian activists give Olmert an unwelcome reception
Frances Lewis writing from Melbourne, Australia
December 17, 2009 – The Australian government recently received former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and current Israeli Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom as part of the Australia Israel Leadership Forum. The forum was to strengthen the already close relationship between the two states. Shalom and Olmert were welcomed with a gala dinner in Melbourne’s ritzy Park Hyatt Hotel on 6 December 2009, attended by Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Given Olmert’s role as Prime Minister during the attacks on Gaza, he is seen by many as guilty of war crimes; it is perhaps no surprise that the Australian media seemed keen to bury the fact that Olmert was in the country and being welcomed by our government. Pro-Palestinian activists on the other hand were intent on holding him to account and letting him know he is not welcome here in our town…

Source: Afghan detainee mistreated in Canadian custody
By ELIZABETH THOMPSON
December 17, 2009 — A new report has surfaced that suggests an Afghan detainee might have been mistreated while in Canadian Forces custody. Global National reported Thursday night that a military police sergeant says not only was an Afghan detainee mistreated and kept for days in a tiny cell that reached intolerable temperatures, but that superiors ignored warnings. In an interview with the Military Police Complaints Commission, Sgt. Carol Utton said an order in the spring of 2007 halted detainee transfers…

The impunity of Israel and its allies will carry a price
Seumas Milne
December 17, 2009 – When evidence of war crimes is produced, you might expect states that claim to defend the rule of law to want those crimes investigated and the perpetrators held to account. Not a bit of it. The decision by a London judge to issue a warrant for the arrest of Israel’s former foreign minister Tzipi Livni over evidence of serious breaches of the laws of war in Gaza has sparked official outrage in Britain. The court’s behaviour was “insufferable”, foreign secretary David Miliband declared. The Times called it “repugnant”. Gordon Brown yesterday assured Livni that action would be taken to ensure no such thing ever happens again…

B’Tselem: Settlers pour their sewerage water into the West Bank
Palestinian Information Center
December 17, 2009 – The Israeli information center for human rights in the occupied territories, B’Tselem, said in a report on Wednesday that the Israeli settlements discharge their sewage water into West Bank valleys and villages. The report said that the settlements produce around 17.5 million cubic meters of sewage water per annum, adding that they represent the refuse of 80 settlements out of a total of 112 in the West Bank. Meanwhile, settlers south of Nablus started expanding their settlement at the expense of Bruin village lands under the very eyes of the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) that did nothing to stop them despite the Israeli government’s decision to halt construction in settlements for ten months…
