Video: Afghans’ anger at Obama’s Nobel peace prize win
Aljazeera.English
December 10, 2009 – Barack Obama, the US president, is due to receive the Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Oslo – days after he ordered an escalation of US involvement in the war in Afghanistan. In making Obama the third sitting US President to win the award, the Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Obama’s co-operative approach to global issues. But many critics say that Obama’s resume is too thin to stand scrutiny with other Nobel peace laureates. And for many Afghans, Obama’s strategy of even more troops does not fit into their vision of what will bring peace. From Kabul, Steve Chao reports…

AFRICOM AIN’T THE PEACE CORPS
by Mark P. Fancher
December 10, 2009 – The U.S. military’s AFRICOM forces pretend their mission on the continent is humanitarian. In reality, AFRICOM is the sharp edge of U.S. imperialism, a killing force eager to impose American dominance. The military command “locks Africa into a state of dependency and maintains favorable political and social conditions for U.S.-based corporations that exploit Africa’s natural resources.” This is not a bug in the system. It’s a defining feature of it…

Obama’s Af-Pak is as Whack as Bush’s Iraq
by BAR executive editor Glen Ford
December 10, 2009 – President Obama has reached a watershed in his presidency: he has devolved to the intellectual level of George Bush, while retaining his world class powers of speech. History may remember Obama as just another vapid but predatory imperialist president who happens to be…superficially eloquent. Unfortunately, the clarity of Obama’s diction is not matched by coherence of policy. Af-Pak is at least as whack as Bush’s Iraq…

Bil’in leader Abdallah Abu Rahmah arrested during military night raid
Jews for Justice for Palestinians
December 10, 2009 – As part of a recent escalation of political arrests in Bil’in, Abdallah Abu Rahmah, a school teacher and coordinator of the Bil’in Popular Committee was arrested by Israeli soldiers. At exactly 2am last night, seven Israeli military jeeps pulled over at Abdallah Abu Rahmah’s residence in the city of Ramallah. Soldiers raided the house and arrested Abu Rahmah from his bed in the presence of his wife and children. Abu Rahmah is a high school teacher in the Latin Patriarchate school in Birzeit near Ramallah and is the coordinator of the Bil’in Popular Committee against the Wall and Settlements. A previous raid targeting Abu Rahmah was executed with such exceptional violence on 15 September 2009 that a soldier was subsequently indicted for assault…

Golda Meir told Poland: Don’t send sick or disabled Jews to Israel
By Lily Galili, Haaretz Correspondent
December 10, 2009 – In 1958, then-foreign minister Golda Meir raised the possibility of preventing handicapped and sick Polish Jews from immigrating to Israel, a recently discovered Foreign Ministry document has revealed. “A proposal was raised in the coordination committee to inform the Polish government that we want to institute selection in aliyah, because we cannot continue accepting sick and handicapped people. Please give your opinion as to whether this can be explained to the Poles without hurting immigration,” read the document, written by Meir to Israel’s ambassador to Poland, Katriel Katz…

ACLU: Obama creating ‘a sweeping immunity doctrine for torturers’
By Sahil Kapur
December 10, 2009 – The nation’s pre-eminent civil rights organization ACLU on Thursday slammed President Obama for shielding the Bush administration from accountability for its “dangerous torture policy,” and insisted that this “lack of transparency” severely threatens the future of constitutional liberty in the United States. “The Bush administration constructed a legal framework for torture,” Jameel Jaffer, Director of ACLU’s National Security Project, said in a conference call with reporters. “Now the Obama administration is constructing a legal framework for impunity.”…

Afghanistan massacre on eve of Obama’s surge
By Bill Van Auken
December 10, 2009 – With the first elements of 30,000 additional US troops set to arrive in Afghanistan next week, the massacre of as many as 15 civilians in a US raid has heightened fears that the Obama administration’s so-called surge will spell a dramatic rise in bloodletting. The killings took place in eastern Laghman province in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Gulzar Sangarwal, the acting head of the provincial council, reported that 13 civilians were killed in the raid on the village of Armul, including one woman. Local villagers reported 15 killed, including children. Reuters news agency said its correspondent had seen the bodies of a woman and 12 men, several of them teenagers. Local authorities have blamed the killings on US Special Forces troops…

Allegory about Afghan Shura and Al-Qaeda in Pakistan
AMERICA LOOKING FOR EXCUSES TO ATTACK PAKISTAN
Brig Asif Haroon Raja
December 9, 2009 – Like the myth of Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda headquartered in FATA which I discussed in my previous write up, another absurd claim has been made that Mullah Omar along with his Shura is based in Quetta. This story woven by spin doctors has caught the imagination of policy makers in Washington and they are playing it impishly. Pakistani leaders already harassed by never ending allegations are at a loss how to respond to the latest assault since denials make no impression on the accusers. After repeating the story several times, US officials laid bare their actual motive by mentioning their flaming desire to employ the horrible drones in Baluchistan including its capital as well. Let us carryout a dispassionate appraisal of this claim. It is now a well known reality that Afghan Taliban hold control of nearly 80% Afghan Territory and wield complete sway in southern, eastern and to some extent western Afghanistan. These regions provide them a secured base to operate into western, central and northern Afghanistan and return back…

Israeli rabbis: Kill prisoners if Shalit doesn’t return
Kobi Nahshoni, YNet
December 10, 2009 – “If Gilad Shalit, Heaven forbid, is executed or not returned in peace, prisoners will be executed immediately,” ruled the court of the reestablished “Sandhedrin” organization, in a ruling published last week on the backdrop of the negotiations to release the captured Israeli soldier. The rabbis even recommended that Israel capture senior Palestinian figures – “including ministers, prime ministers, and anyone associated with the enemy’s leadership” – as part of the effort to bring Gilad home…

Hussein Anwar, The Mesopotamian
December 10, 2009 – The official representative of the Baath Party Condemns Baghdad bombings that killed hundreds of civilians: These acts bear the responsibility of the American forces and its product – this weakly structured government, for they are responsible for the security first and foremost and as a result; the spread of terrorist acts in many of the Iraqi cities calls for their immediate departure, And the stepping down and resignation of the government that is implementing their agenda along with their supporters…

Occupation Industries – The Israeli industrial zones
Corporate Watch
December 10, 2009 – In a climate in which the call for a consumer boycott of Israeli goods is finally gaining strength, one area of Israel’s economy is, as yet, surprisingly under-researched. Most of Israel’s industrial zones in the West Bank are connected to illegal residential settlements and provide an indispensable economic backbone to the local settler economy. Mishor Adumim is the second largest industrial zone in the Occupied Territories and the one through which the Palestinians have the most to lose…

Answers to The State of Palestine Quiz
by Tony Malone
December 10, 2009 – THE GREAT ZIONIST MYTH: The Palestinians never existed before modern Israel was established. They came from other Arab lands to try to take what the Israelis had rightful claims to. “Palestinians” pretend to the world and to themselves that they have always been there, but they are delusional and do it all merely because they hate Jews. The following series of questions has been circulating on the internet for awhile. It is a piece of trashy Zionist propaganda, meant to make the Palestinians look as though they never existed – a favorite Zionist fairytale…

Israel’s notorious Hannibal procedure
Jonathan Cook
December 10, 2009 – The fatal shooting by Israeli soldiers of an Israeli man earlier this week as he tried to scale a fence into the Gaza Strip was reportedly part of a drastic procedure the army was supposed to have phased out several years ago. The Israeli media reported that Yakir Ben-Melech, 34, had bled to death after he was shot under the “Hannibal procedure,” designed to prevent Israelis from being taken captive alive by enemy forces…

Rooz, Translation by Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
December 10, 2009 – In the aftermath of the arrest of Majid Tavakoli, member of Islamic Association, in Polytechnique University (Amir Kabir), and the reports by government owned media regarding his arrest ‘while dressed as a woman’, the universities still have a tense atmosphere and the protests against the government continue. According to received reports, in addition to protests in Tehran’s universities, yesterday also saw student gatherings in state and private universities in Mashhad, Qhazvin, Karaj, Esfahan and Shiraz. Yesterday’s university student protests in several different cities followed the lie mongering by the government, and publication on websites connected to the security-intelligence forces of photos related to Majid Tavakoli, a well known student activist. Yesterday’s continued [nationwide] student protests were also held in undivided solidarity with that student activist…

Palestinians want more than words
Khaled Amayreh
December 10, 2009 – A watered-down, though still strongly worded policy statement issued by EU foreign ministers this week has drawn ambivalent reactions from both Israel and the Palestinians, with the latter urging the EU to act on the document and not allow it to sink into irrelevance. Adopted by European foreign ministers in Brussels on 8 December, the document reasserts the two-state solution, urging Israel to allow for the creation of a viable and territorially contiguous Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its future capital…

Afghan resistance statement
Karzai Policy is Tuned to Protect American Interests
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
December 10, 2009 – Like past eight years, the kowtowing gestures by Karzai at the swearing-in ceremony speech, proved once more that he and his working team have no guts to go against interests and orders of America and other invading forces. They willingly prefer aims, and demands of the foreigners to supersede over the interests and values of the Afghans. Karzai had no word in his next five year plan about the withdrawal of the foreign forces. Even ostensibly, he did not raise a finger to protect national independence and religious values…

Iraq inquiry: Tony Blair talked of undermining Saddam regime in 2001, MI6 boss says
Telegraph
December 10, 2009 – The 2001 discussions focussed on ‘’political’’ actions which could help undermine the Iraqi regime, according to Sir John, who was then the prime minister’s private secretary for foreign affairs. Iraq was one of a number of countries where Britain would have liked to see regime change, he added. However, giving evidence to the official inquiry into the conflict, he insisted that there was no talk at that stage in Whitehall of military action in Iraq…

Press release, various undersigned
December 10, 2009 – On 10 December, the world observes the 61st International Human Rights Day, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” However, 61 years after the adoption of the UDHR, Israel continues to pursue clearly discriminatory policies and practices and the violation of Palestinians’ human rights have persisted, and escalated…

German Green leader Joschka Fischer bangs the drum for Afghanistan war
Peter Schwarz
December 10 2009 – The escalation of the Afghanistan war has created severe difficulties for the German government. Contradictory statements on Germany’s course in the war have emerged from the chancellery, the foreign ministry and the Bavarian state chancellery. While the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) chairperson and German chancellor, Angela Merkel, together with Defense Secretary Karl Theodor von Guttenberg (Christian Social Union—CSU), are preparing to announce an increased German deployment by the end of January, the CSU chairman and Bavarian prime minister, Horst Seehofer, has publicly argued against such a move. THE FREE BETHLEHEM CAMPAIGN
AAPER
December 10, 2009 – Bethlehem is one of the most historically significant towns in Palestine. It is known as the birthplace of King David and of Jesus. And, for generations, it was a lively and bustling town. But, today, Bethlehem resembles an open-air prison, occupied by Israel’s military and encircled by Israel’s wall. These circumstances have caused Bethlehem’s population, particularly its once-virbrant Christian population, to emigrate from the city in dramatic numbers. AAPER believes that it is important to educate Americans about the plight of today’s Bethlehem…
