Will Congress Criminalize Anti-Semitism and Israeli Criticism?
Stephen Lendman
December 4, 2009 – In the current climate, perhaps given: — America’s police state laws; — no due process or judicial fairness for any state target; — mass illegal surveillance; — targeting dissent; and — the power of the Israeli Lobby over Congress, the media, academia, the clergy, and most anyone confronting them. During Israel’s war on Gaza, only 5 of 535 congressional members dissented on pro-Israeli resolutions. On January 8, 2009, the Senate unanimously passed S 10: “A resolution recognizing the right of Israel to defend itself against attacks from Gaza and reaffirming the United States’ strong support for Israel in its battle with Hamas, and supporting the Israeli-Palestinian (no peace) peace process.” On January 9, the House, by a 390 – 5 vote, passed HR 34 “Recognizing Israel’s right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza, reaffirming the United States’ strong support for Israel, and supporting the Israeli-Palestinian (no peace) peace process”…

A Postscript: Choices Have Consequences
Arthur Silber
December 4, 2009 – I have an addendum to my post the other day concerning Obama’s announcement of his “new” Afghanistan strategy (”A Deadly Liar and Manipulator”). A short while ago, I happened to look at an essay of mine from the end of August of last year. In that post, “A Choice of War Criminals,” I set out the relevant provisions of the Nuremberg Principles. I then demonstrated — and the proof is a remarkably simple one to grasp — how application of those Principles leads to the unavoidable conclusion that both Barack Obama and John McCain were and are war criminals. As I also pointed out, the same is true of many others in our national ruling political class… If you voted for a war criminal, you voted for murder, torture and destruction. If you expected any other result, you’re a fool. And that’s the kindest description that can be offered…

Blackwater Founder Tells of Extensive Government-Contracted Assassinations
Yana Kunichoff
December 4, 2009 – The head of Blackwater revealed the details of his collaboration with the CIA to locate and assassinate top al Qaeda operatives as part of a covert antiterror operation Tuesday, and blamed Democrats for the leak that ended the program. In an article published in Vanity Fair, Erik Prince, the founder of Blackwater, spoke about the extent of his involvement with the CIA, which ranged from putting together, funding and executing operations to bring personnel into “denied areas” to targeting specific people for assassination who were deemed enemies by the US government…

The Audacity of Ethnic Cleansing
Obama’s plan for Afghanistan
Mike Whitney
December 4, 2009 – …The new strategy of “regionalization” is aimed at dividing Afghanistan into individual cantons—in a similar manner to what took place in Lebanon and the former Yugoslavia. Up to now the US-NATO occupation supported the government of Hamid Karzai and sold the process to the public as “democratization”. However, occupation forces are moving increasingly to hand over power directly to regional warlords and their militias—on the assumption that such regional forces will follow the orders of their imperial masters. As soon as there is no more danger in a specific province, Guttenberg declared, then the international troops should be withdrawn from that area.” …

US looks to expand drone attacks in Pakistan
By LOLITA C. BALDOR (AP)
December 4, 2009 — The Obama administration is considering widening missile strikes on al-Qaida and the Taliban inside Pakistan, and is planning to bolster the training of Pakistan’s forces in a key border battleground where militants fuel the escalating Afghan insurgency, according to U.S. officials. The officials said the stepped-up moves against the militant networks could extend the air strikes further south, beyond the current target areas in Waziristan and into the western province of Baluchistan. U.S. special operations forces are also developing plans to expand their training of Pakistan’s paramilitary Frontier Corps into that province…

Israel seeks to prohibit call to prayer in Al Aqsa Mosque because it disturbs settlers
Middle East Monitor
December 4, 2009 – The Israeli Knesset is discussing a bill to ban the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem from raising the dawn call to prayer in order not to disturb the settlers in the holy city. Israeli media reported on Thursday that the draft law now under scrutiny by parliament will affect other densely populated cities. According to Israeli media, the bill has been put forward to the Knesset by the Aryeh Bibby, a member of Kadima party, who said he had received written and oral requests which reflected the anger of millions of Jews with prayer calls in the early morning hours, both in Jerusalem and other occupied cities. Bibby, was reported as saying that if Muslims wanted to hear the call to prayer, they should find a way does not bother others…

‘No Afghanistan withdrawal in 2011’
Mark Mardell, BBC News
December 4, 2009 – The US won’t pull out of Afghanistan in 2011. President Obama’s top national security adviser, who has played a key part in designing the new Afghanistan and Pakistan strategy, has been trying to clear up some confusion about the exit strategy. Gen James Jones told me that “in no manner, shape or form” would the US withdraw from Afghanistan in 2011. In his speech on Tuesday, President Obama for the first time put a date on the beginning of the end of the United States presence in Afghanistan…

Propaganda disguised as academic inquiry at the University of Illinois
David Green, The Electronic Intifada
December 4, 2009 – Chancellor Richard Herman of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recently resigned due to his cooperation with political influence-peddlers seeking to gain admission for less qualified but privileged applicants. But Herman also participated in a more acceptable form of political corruption — publicly displayed with the invocation of high principle — in his cooperation with the Israel lobby in opposition to the British boycott of Israeli academics, and in the funding of the Israel Studies Project at the Urbana campus…

Human rights report exposes US abuse of immigrant detainees
By Jerry White
December 4, 2009 – Human Rights Watch released a report Wednesday detailing how US authorities are indiscriminately transferring thousands of detained immigrants away from their attorneys and family members in order to prevent them from fighting deportation. The report, “Locked Up Far Away: The Transfer of Immigrants to Remote Detention Centers in the United States” presents previously unreleased data that the human rights organization obtained under the Freedom of Information Act from the department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The organization also interviewed detainees, family members and immigration attorneys…

United States of America, Chief Kingpin in the Afghanistan Heroin Trade?
Richard Clark
December 4, 2009 – What we have is essentially a drug war in Afghanistan, and US forces are simply helping one side against the other. Unbeknownst to American taxpayers, drug lords collaborate with the U.S. and Canadian officers on a daily basis. This collaboration and alliance was forged by American forces during the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, and has endured and grown ever since. The drug lords have been empowered through U.S. money and arms to consolidate their drug business at the expense of drug-dealing rivals in other tribes…

Israel closes sole oil and gas terminal on Gaza border
Erin Cunningham
December 4, 2009 – The population of the Gaza Strip is facing an acute cooking gas shortage this winter, after a unilateral Israeli decision in October to permanently close the sole oil and gas terminal between the coastal Palestinian territory and the Jewish state. The Nahal Oz crossing has been shut down for “security reasons,” an official with the Israeli coordination office for the Gaza Strip said, adding that it will only act as “a backup” when the Kerem Shalom crossing in the south is too congested…

Meet the Commanded-in-Chief
Tom Engelhardt
December 4, 2009 – … The president campaigned on the slogan, “Change we can believe in.” He then chose as advisors — in the economic sphere as well, where a similar record of gross error, narrow and unimaginative thinking, and over-identification with the powerful could easily be compiled — a crew who had never seen a significant change, or an out-of-the-ordinary thought it could live with — and still can’t. As a result, the Iraq War has yet to begin to go away, the Afghan War is being escalated in a major way, the Middle East is in some turmoil, Guantanamo remains open, black sites are still operating in Afghanistan, the Pentagon’s budget has grown yet larger, and supplemental demands on Congress for yet more money to pay for George W. Bush’s wars will, despite promises otherwise, soon enough be made. A stale crew breathing stale air has ensured that Afghanistan, the first of Bush’s disastrous wars, is now truly Obama’s War; and the news came directly from West Point where the president surrendered to his militarized fate…

Britain: Iraq inquiry hears the testimony of guilty men
Robert Stevens
December 4, 2009 – The official British inquiry into the Iraq war, headed by Sir John Chilcot, has taken testimony from Sir Peter Ricketts, a former chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee; William Ehrman, the Foreign Office’s director general for defence and intelligence between 2002 and 2004; Sir Christopher Meyer, the UK’s ambassador to the US in the run-up to the invasion; Sir Jeremy Greenstock, the UK’s permanent representative to the United Nations from 1998 to 2003; and Sir David Manning, chief foreign policy adviser of then-Prime Minister Tony Blair. All of them have provided damning evidence of the Blair government’s collusion in the planning and waging of an illegal war of aggression by the US administration of President George W. Bush…
