Opposing Obama’s War: Let’s Be Serious
By Mike Ely
December 2, 2009 – …We are at a moment where the right has emerged as the side of radical critique, and the left has associated itself with the government. The situation demands a regroupment among revolutionaries. There can be no healthy regroupment process without a serious deep-going reconception (and promotion) of revolutionary theory. That goes against the grain (including the general all-American “just do it” mentality.) Our goals cannot be served by the cynical merger of exhausted groupings — who all justify themselves with the urgency of “doing something.” The previous left has shown itself to be remarkably sterile — unable to engage the actual discussion of society, and largely unable to break with the system’s own politics and policies. We need our own song. And writing such a song requires a period of time where we make space for ongoing theoretical investigation and debate — even while we all continue (in experimental ways) to speak, connect and organize with a fiercely radical and revolutionary politics…

Israel lobby: the blog edition
Evgeny Morozov
December 2, 2009 – At the risk of stepping into Stephen Walt’s territory, I’d like to highlight one of the most remarkable developments in the Israeli blogosphere: the Second International Jewish Blogger Convention that took place in Jerusalem on Sept 13th and brought together 300 bloggers from Israel and the diaspora. The Israeli government and civil society alike have recently been extremely active in cyberspace, especially in war time, when shaping the international opinion often becomes essential to achieving military objectives. The Israeli consulate in New York received a lot of praise for their Twittering during the recent war in Gaza; however, many other low-key initiatives have received considerably less attention. For example, as the international outcry against the war in Gaza began getting louder, Israel’s Immigrant Absorption Ministry announced a campaign to recruit an “army of bloggers” made up of polyglot Israelis who could counter anti-Israel sentiment on English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and French sites…

Obama’s Af-Pak is as Whack as Bush’s Iraq
by BAR executive editor Glen Ford
December 2, 2009 – President Obama has reached a watershed in his presidency: he has devolved to the intellectual level of George Bush, while retaining his world class powers of speech. History may remember Obama as just another vapid but predatory imperialist president who happens to be…superficially eloquent. Unfortunately, the clarity of Obama’s diction is not matched by coherence of policy. Af-Pak is at least as whack as Bush’s Iraq…

Worse Than Bush
Mike Whitney
December 2, 2009 – George Bush never pretended to be something he wasn’t. The same cannot be said for Barack Obama. Obama exploited the persona of a reformer to the maximum extent. And it worked. He rode into the White House on a wave of public enthusiasm. As soon as he was sworn in, he kicked the left to the curb, expanded the GWOT, and reinforced the regressive policies of the Bush administration. Last night’s speech is just the icing on the cake. It exposes Obama as a fraud and a hypocrite. The policy has not changed at all. In fact, it is getting worse. More than 2 million people have been driven from their homes in the Swat Valley. These are the victims of Obama’s undeclared war in Pakistan. Hundreds more have been killed in robotic-drone attacks, the Pentagon’s twisted antidote to additional troop commitments.

President Obama’s Secret: Only 100 al Qaeda Now in Afghanistan
With New Surge, One Thousand U.S. Soldiers and $300 Million for Every One al Qaeda Fighter
By RICHARD ESPOSITO, MATTHEW COLE and BRIAN ROSS
December 2, 2009 – As he justified sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan at a cost of $30 billion a year, President Barack Obama’s description Tuesday of the al Qaeda “cancer” in that country left out one key fact: U.S. intelligence officials have concluded there are only about 100 al Qaeda fighters in the entire country. A senior U.S. intelligence official told ABCNews.com the approximate estimate of 100 al Qaeda members left in Afghanistan reflects the conclusion of American intelligence agencies and the Defense Department. The relatively small number was part of the intelligence passed on to the White House as President Obama conducted his deliberations…

Using Photos of Abu Zubaydah’s Torture to Intimidate and Threaten Other Prisoners
Jeff Kaye
December 2, 2009 – The set-up of Abu Zubaydah as an Al Qaeda bigwig may have been meant, among other things, for use in intimidation and torture of other prisoners. Andy Worthington recounts how a prisoner captured with Zubaydah, Omar Gharmesh, reported to another prisoner in Syria’s infamous Palestine Branch prison, where they were sent via “extraordinary rendition,” that he was shown pictures of a tortured Abu Zubaydah and told, “If you don’t talk, this is what will happen to you.” What has not been reported until now is that another prisoner reports that he and a number of other detainees at Guantanamo were also shown pictures of a tortured and injured Abu Zubaydah…

From Gitmo to Bagram: From Bad to Worse?
Suzanne Ito, ACLU
December 2, 2009 – Thanksgiving weekend’s big national security story was the continuing operation of a “black jail” at Bagram, where detainees are held for weeks in completely secret detention. Not even the Red Cross is notified about or given access to prisoners and their families, and have no idea where they are. Marcy Wheeler writes: …I can’t help but note that this story came out just weeks after the Center for American Progress’ Ken Gude floated sending military detainees from Gitmo to Bagram. And just after two of the Administration officials focused on doing the right thing with Gitmo left the Administration. Valtin also notes at Daily Kos that the news also came a few days before last night’s speech by President Obama announcing troop escalation in Afghanistan…

Obama, the Biggest Threat to Al-Aqsa in 90 Years?
By Shaykh Riyad Nadwi, PhD
December 2, 2009 – …From the evidence presented above, it appears that Obama has promised to facilitate full control of all of Al-Quds Al-Sharif including Masjid Al-Aqsa to the Israelis while employing his charm and rhetorical skills to placate Muslims’ reactions. The hope is that with the aid of technology and spin the political repercussions will be managed. The bottom-line is that the arrival of Obama in the White House coincides perfectly with the emergence of an emboldened Israel which behaves as if it has nothing to fear in Washington. The inhuman brutality in Gaza, the day-by-day increasing violations of international law through regular invasions of the Haram al-Sharif, the demolishing of Palestinian houses in the City and the unjustified digging towards the foundations of Masjid al-Aqsa are all indications of a new found confidence…

Ethnic cleansing, pure and simple
The Jordan Times
December 2, 2009 – Israel stripped over 4,500 Jerusalemite Palestinians of their “residency rights” in 2008. This marks a huge acceleration of a policy that has been in force since Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967. In these 41 years, Israel has now stripped over 12,000 Palestinians of their “permits” to live in Jerusalem, 35 per cent or so of those in 2008 alone. It also maps out exactly where the current right-wing Israeli government, which has made no secret of its wish to Judaise Jerusalem, a travesty of history if ever there was one, is heading…

US Supreme Court suppresses torture photos
By Tom Eley
December 2, 2009 – The US Supreme Court on Monday nullified an appeals court order that would have obligated the Obama administration to release photographs depicting US soldiers subjecting prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq to horrific acts of torture. In an unsigned three-sentence decision in the case, Department of Defense v. ACLU, 09-160, the Supreme Court granted an Obama administration petition vacating the order and sent the case back to the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York, telling the lower court it must review the case in light of a law passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama in October…

Abolish the Fed and Return Money Creation Power to Congress
by Stephen Lendman
December 2, 2009 – In her extraordinary book, “Web of Debt,” financial writer Ellen Brown tells “the shocking truth about our money system, (how it) trapped us in debt, and how we can break free.” She quotes banker/developer Reed Simpson saying: “Credible evidence (reveals) a world (banking) power elite intent on gaining absolute control over the planet and its natural resources, including its subservient human (ones).” It’s the Bilderberg Group classless society idea of rulers, serfs, and no middle class by controlling the world’s money. Time Marches on but not for Obama
By George S. Hishmeh
December 2, 2009 – It is par for the course for the mainstream American media to adopt the U.S. official line on U.S. foreign policy, especially when it concerns the Arab-Israeli conflict, rather than take an independent stance. This does not mean, much to the delight of some foreign policy observers, that this position is universally true since there are few liberal groups, including American Jewish organizations, who do stick their neck out but regrettably with little impact in the halls of government. Both Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Mideast peace envoy George Mitchell lauded the recent offer of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to go along with a partial settlement freeze in the occupied Palestinian territories although he excluded occupied Arab East Jerusalem, where several recent episodes of ethnic cleansing of Palestinian Arab citizens from the Holy City have occurred…

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
December 2, 2009 – The American President Obama has announced his strategy after months of dithering. The essence of the strategy shows that the needs and wants of the American people have been overlooked during the framing of this strategy and it has been formulated under the pressure of (army) generals of Pentagon, the American Neo-conservatives and the wealthiest fews of America and for the protection of their interests. Hence it is a strategy of colonialism aimed at securing interests of the American capitalists and it seems America has vast and protracted but wicked and hostile plans not only for Afghanistan but for the whole region. There is neither a new point in the Obama’s strategy, nor it contains any solution for the Afghan issue…

A Deadly Liar and Manipulator
Arthur Silber
December 2, 2009 – To all those who repeatedly claimed that, no matter what “mistakes” he might make and regardless of the scope of the devastating effects of those errors, Obama had to represent a markedly better choice than McCain, take note: in certain respects, Obama is far more dangerous than McCain could have been. For the same reasons, Obama is also more dangerous than Bush was. I remind you that I have written numerous essays damning Bush for almost every single one of his policies. It is hardly the case that I viewed Bush in anything approaching a positive light, however remotely…

A Death Warrant for the Future
Chris Floyd
December 2, 2009 – And now it is here. The new “surge” in Afghanistan is underway – the second surge launched by the progressive president in his first year in office. Barack Obama’s speech, and the policies embraced in it, and the sinister implications underlying it, are all abysmally awful. They are a death warrant not only for the thousands of Afghan and Pakistani civilians who will be killed in the intensified conflict, but also for the countless thousands of innocents yet to die in the coming generations of a world roiled and destabilized by an out-of-control empire… In the speech, and the PR seeding that surrounded it, Obama and his mouthpieces stress the “success” of the Bush Regime’s “surge” in Iraq as an encouraging model for the escalation in Afghanistan. Putting aside the fact that Obama already launched a surge in Afghanistan earlier this year that was just as big as Bush’s escalation in Iraq but has proved such a singular failure that he is now launching an even bigger surge, the truth is that the Iraq “surge” had almost nothing to do with the abatement of horrific violence in that conquered land. As we have noted here very often, the “surge” was in fact the final act of a protracted civil war, in which the United States actively abetted the vast ethnic cleansing of Sunni Muslims on behalf of the extremist Shiite parties empowered by the American invasion…

As Obama Sends More Troops, Giant Shadow Army Of Contractors Set To Grow In Afghanistan
Justin Elliott
December 2, 2009 – With President Obama addressing the nation tonight about a new escalation in Afghanistan, a perennially underexamined topic is once again receiving short shrift: the huge force of contractors, which as of June outnumbered the size of the U.S. troop presence itself, is likely to swell. The Administration seemingly hasn’t addressed the issue, and the word “contractor” doesn’t appear much in media coverage — for example, in the Times and Post stories on the escalation today…

It’s Obama’s war now
SocialistWorker
December 2, 2009 – …In his prime-time speech on December 1, Obama followed through on a pledge to escalate the war in Afghanistan for a second time, announcing that he would send an additional 30,000 U.S. troops. When Obama took office, fewer than 50,000 U.S. soldiers were deployed to Afghanistan. He ordered an additional 21,000 troops there earlier this year. With the additional 30,000, he has doubled the U.S. presence. Obama motivated the troop buildup with a speech that recalled George W. Bush’s call for a “war on terror.” He recycled the Bush lie that the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan eight years ago was retribution for the September 11, 2001 attacks, and he falsely claimed that Afghanistan’s Taliban government refused to hand over Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda…

Ahrar center: Israel uses many torture means against Palestinian prisoners
Palestinian Information Center
December 2, 2009 – Al-Ahrar center for human rights and prisoners’ studies stated Tuesday that Israel uses internationally-prohibited means during the detention of Palestinians much more than tying hands of prisoners behind their backs as admitted by the Shin Bet lately. Director of the center Fouad Al-Khafsh cited as an example that Israeli officers do not confine to tying the hands of Palestinian prisoners during interrogation, but they also severely beat them, deprive them from sleep and douse them with cold water. Khafsh added that the Israeli allegations that tying the hands of prisoners behind their backs is something necessary to prevent prisoners from escaping or attacking interrogators is a flimsy pretext because everyone entering Israeli jails knows well the security fortifications and measures in such places…

RedBedHead
December 2, 2009 – MARK THIS DATE IN YOUR CALENDAR. Today is the date in which Barack Obama officially betrayed the last hope of his supporters by sending 30,000 more troops to kill and die in the mountains and valleys of Afghanistan. Instead of “change you can believe in”, we have gotten the Bush surge strategy redux. Exit Obama the Reformer, enter Obama the Emperor… The second tragedy of Obama’s announcement is that this should be a moment when students occupy their campuses and protesters hit the streets. Sadly, too many of the anti-war organizations have been disoriented by their enthusiasm for Obama with some, like prominent activist Medea Benjamin, now opposing the call for troops to be withdrawn immediately…

Overview about Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory
The Applied Research Institute – Jerusalem
December 2, 2009 – The aim of the report is to enlighten a wider audience about the reality of Israeli settlements inside the Palestinian Territory, although many political and security reasons exist to protect the facts around them, which has let the problem constantly grow up in the almost complete indifference of the international community. December 2, 2009 – As the US announced deepening of its involvement in Afghanistan by despatching 30,000 more troops, President Barack Obama has quietly authorised an expansion of war against terrorism in Pakistan under which CIA would widen its campaign of strikes against militants by unmanned drones. The expanded operations by the CIA could include drone strikes in the southern province of Baluchistan, where senior Afghan Taliban leaders are believed to be hiding, New York Times reported today quoting officials. CIA has submitted its plan to widen its campaign in Pakistan to the White House and has asked for commitment to jack up the agency’s budget for operations inside the country…

Israel stripped thousands of Jerusalem Arabs of residency in 2008
IOA – Israeli Occupation Archive
December 2, 2009 – Depopulating the Palestinians, or ethnic cleansing, is not new for Israel. In addition to the forcible removal of Palestinians during the Nakba, the Israeli government has used a variety of tricks to “redeem” the Land of Israel from its native Arab population. The removal of East Jerusalem Palestinian residents is somewhat similar to a government practice of the early 1950s, targeting the so-called “absent present” residents: those who temporarily left their homes or land during the war, but remained within what later become Israel. They were prevented from reclaiming their property and Israel was thus able to confiscate it for the exclusive use of its Jewish citizens…

World Socialist Web Site editorial board
December 2, 2009 – Obama’s speech last night, which packaged the deployment of an additional 30,000 US troops to Afghanistan as the prelude to withdrawal, was a cynical exercise in evasion, double-talk and falsification. Our Lie-Based Reality
By Peter Chamberlin
December 1, 2009 – …Operating under the absurd delusion that American and NATO troops (who are destroying multiple nations) are there to “defend America,” throngs of people gather for patriotic parades, heaping piles of honors upon those highly-trained young men who kill for false visions of “God and country.” If only these men who hold honor and service to mankind in such high esteem (even though they are bathed in the blood of innocence) could see beyond the carefully constructed false reality for just a moment, then their own consciences (if they still had them) would probably convince them of their own personal guilt and immorality. If the devil that blinds their eyes could be restrained for but a moment, then perhaps God would come rushing back in.
But that is not happening. As a result, we stand ready to up the ante in Afghanistan, as the American people watch their TV sets and ignore the fact that Obama is about to make our criminal assault on the Pashtun people a whole lot worse…
