Uranium in Iraq: the Poisonous Legacy of the Iraq Wars
Review of Abdul-Haq Al-Ani and Joanne Baker’s book
by David MacGregor
November 15, 2009 – Hegel remarks upon the appearance of “concrete evil” in history, the intermittent eruption of human malevolence on a colossal scale capable of destroying entire societies. Perpetrators of world-historical crimes are propelled solely by passion—by self-regard, greed and hatred—and pay no heed, Hegel noted, to “order and moderation, justice and morality.” The imperialist assault on Iraq—which began with the First Gulf War, reached a peak with “shock and awe” attacks launched by U.S./U.K military forces in 2003, and continues today, nearly twenty years later—offers a horrendous example of unrestrained evil spread across a titanic canvas. Abdul-Haq Al-Ani’s and Joanne Baker’s indispensable book spotlights the appalling criminal enterprise now working itself out in Iraq: Deliberate contamination of the Iraqi nation, its peoples, and natural environment with radiation from previously unheard of weapons of mass destruction—deadly implements of war fashioned from a practically inexhaustible global garbage dump of depleted uranium (DU)…

TERROR CAMPAIGN AGAINST LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER IRAQIS CONTINUES UNCHECKED BY IRAQI GOVERNMENT
IRAQI LGBT
November 15, 2009 – The rise of fundamentalist groups in Iraq since the 2003 U.S. led invasion has proven deadly to LGBT Iraqis, who are now being forced to either hide or face the consequences. Using the internet as a means to track down new victims, militia members are now employing computer analysts to monitor traffic on gay dating and networking websites in the region… Unfortunately, Iraqi LGBT has not been able to help everyone. The organization estimates that over 720 LGBT men and women have been murdered by these extremist militias in the last six years. The Iraqi government has largely been absent in pursuing the roaming death squads who carry out these acts, likely due to the influence of extremist Shia religious parties that are calling for a moral cleansing of Iraq. Once the most liberal and secular of the Arab nations, nowadays a religious extremism has taken hold of the country to the detriment of its people…

Iraq: Government pushes oil privatisation
Tim Dobson
November 15, 2009 – Before and after the invasion of Iraq, the war’s goal of privatising Iraq’s oil to the benefit of Western oil corporations was highlighted not just by the war’s opponents, but also by many of its supporters. Just before the March 20, 2003 US-led invasion, the US state department’s Oil and Energy Working Group said Iraq “should be opened to international oil companies as quickly as possible after the war”. The Iraq Study Group, which gave recommendations to the US government in 2006, said the US should “assist Iraqi leaders to reorganize the national oil industry as a commercial enterprise”…

Cover-Up
The Truth About The Anthrax Attacks
By Barry Kissin
November 15, 2009 – On September 16 and 17, 2008, the House and Senate Judiciary Committees respectively, conducted “Amerithrax oversight” hearings consisting of questioning FBI Director Robert Mueller. Despite widespread concern about the integrity of Amerithrax, the colloquy during these hearings was largely feeble. Congressman Nadler did manage to ask the $64,000 question. Salon.com journalist Glen Greenwald recounted this as follows: “Nadler asked one of the most central questions in the anthrax case: he pointed out that the facilities that (unlike Ft. Detrick) actually have the equipment and personnel to prepare dry, silica-coated anthrax are the U.S. Army’s Dugway Proving Ground and the Battelle Corporation, the private CIA contractor that conducts substantial research into highly complex strains of anthrax. Nadler asked how the FBI had eliminated those institutions as the culprits behind the attack…”

Norwegian doctor: Israel terrorist state
Palestinian Information Center
November 15, 2009 – Dr. Mads Gilbert has accused Israel of being a “terrorist state” led by losers, whose natural place is in prison after standing trial at the international court of justice for their crimes against the Palestinian people. The Norwegian doctor told Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper published on Sunday in London that he supported the Palestinian people’s right of choosing their representatives when asked about Israeli charges that he was dealing with Hamas leaders. He said that Israel did not table a single proof to refute “our evidence and testimonies”…

Israeli PM threatens unilateral moves as Palestinians seek UN recognition of statehood
Xinhua
November 15, 2009 – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday warned that his country would respond with its own unilateral moves to any unilateral steps by the Palestinians, reported local daily Ha’aretz. Speaking at a peace forum in Jerusalem, Netanyahu issued the warning in his first public response to a bid of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to request the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.,,

STOP the Execution of 126 Iraqi Women.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
November 15, 2009 – This is an urgent appeal regarding a piece of very serious information I have just received. A decision has been taken to execute on the Eid Al Kabeer (in 2 weeks time) — the Muslim feast marking the end of the Hajj pilgrimage the same time that President Saddam Hussein was murdered — 126 Iraqi women on charges of “terrorism.” These Iraqi women all hold higher University degrees and have worked as high cadres in the previous regime. That is their only crime. Among the 126 women to be executed are: are the ex Head of Nuclear Energy Center (who was detained by the US occupying forces) and the ex minister of Work and Social Affairs…

UNLIKELY SUPPORTERS OF FAIRNESS TO IRAQ (BEFORE MARCH 2003)
Malcom Lagauche
November 15, 2009 – On May 2, 2009,Jack Kemp died. He received the standard accolades. Mostly, he wasmentioned as the great conservative who supported the programs of Ronald Reagan and successive political conservatives. This may be so, but not one word has been written about his efforts in the 1990s for a quick end to the Iraqi embargo. To me, along with his great prowess in the sport of American football, this should be his greatest legacy. Most people forgot about Iraq’s plight after March 1991. After all, the U.S. had just kicked the Iraqis out of Kuwait and there was an embargo affixed. Few realized just how severe the embargo would turn out and also that if Iraq, which it did, acquiesced to the terms of the embargo it would not be lifted as long as Saddam Hussein was in power. There was no document stating this, but it was well-known…

Humanity Targeted in Gaza
By Yousef Munayyer
November 15, 2009 – … There is perhaps no theater of war in a more urban setting than the Gaza Strip. As one of the most densely populated spots on the planet, Gaza is precisely the type of place laws of war were meant to protect civilians. It becomes comical then to even consider the notion put forward by Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu recently. He boldly claimed that the laws of war should be amended so that operations like the one Israel carried out in Gaza this past winter that left over 1,400 dead, mostly civilians, could be legal. In a war that could have been entirely avoided, Israel chose not only to attack but also to do so in a cowardly way that guaranteed tremendous civilian deaths and destruction to civilian infrastructure…

Doctors call for children injured in Gaza conflict to be monitored for long term effects of new weapons
By Clare Dyer
November 15, 2009 – …When the Norwegian doctors arrived in Gaza, Dr Gilbert recalls, “the first thing we saw was bread lines.” He said, “When the attack started, it was not on a healthy society, it was on a society that had been forced to its knees by three years of merciless siege. Siege has been used by the Israeli army as a military tool.” He characterises the Israeli attack on Gaza as “a deliberate, preplanned, man-made disaster.” Because so many of Gaza’s residents are children, “when the bombing started, it was like bombing a besieged prison—not only a prison but a child prison.” He shows a picture of a 14 year old boy whose right leg is torn off at the thigh, his left foot at the ankle, his body covered with bruises but with no shrapnel wounds. The perpetrator, he believes, is a new type of weapon, the dense inert metal explosive (DIME) bomb. “Anybody within a radius of 5 or 10 m will be killed or torn apart,” said Dr Gilbert. “He died between our hands within the next five minutes of our picture. We ask: is Gaza being used as a test ground for new weapons?” He called for all Gaza amputees to be put on a register and to be followed up, concerned that DIME bombs, which contain a tungsten alloy, may be carcinogenic…

Barack Obama and the Failure of the Peace Process
by Stella Dallas
November 15, 2009 – … As remarkable as Obama’s Cairo speech was, no less remarkable was the speed of Obama’s retreat from its lofty rhetoric when confronted with political realities. Under the leadership of newly re-cycled right wing hardliner Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu, Israel predictably responded to Obama’s demand by raising its middle finger to Israel’s only remaining benefactor, by authorizing the construction of 455 new Jewish-only housing units in and around Jerusalem and announcing that some 3000 units under construction would be completed regardless of any hypothetical moratorium…

Palestinians to ask UN to endorse independent state
RIA Novosti
November 15, 2009 – The Palestinian authorities are preparing to ask the UN Security Council to endorse the independent Palestinian state, the chief Palestinian negotiator has said. “Under the initiative of the head of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization seeks to enlist support of Arab states, Europe, Russia, China and other international groups, in order to have an opportunity to apply to the UN Security Council a resolution for the recognition of the independence of the Palestinian state in its June 1967 borders,” Saeb Erekat told journalists…

10-year-old Palestinian boy jailed for 11 hours
Ali Waked
November 15, 2009 – Hussam Faisal Muhana, 10, heeded the calls made on Saturday over the loudspeakers throughout his village of Deir al-Ghusun near Tulkarem encouraging residents to participate in a demonstration against the separation fence. Together with other children and youth from the village, he went to the demonstration. The children threw stones at the security forces that clashed with the demonstrators. Despite his young age, Muhana was arrested. “There were two soldiers there who beat me in the legs with a club. After that, they took me to Ariel,” the boy told Ynet the day after his arrest. Still in shock, he didn’t know whether he was taken to a police station or to a military base. “In Ariel, they started to ask me, ‘Why do you throw stones?’ I told them, ‘Just because.’”…

But in Afghanistan, hundreds of people are still detained without charge at a “secret” prison in Bagram airbase, the largest US military hub in the region. Britain’s “Mock Shock”
Hussein Al-alak, The Iraq Solidarity Campaign
November 15, 2009 – How many more insults are going to be directed against the Iraqi people, like the insincerity which has been shown by Britain, in relation to further allegations of prisoner abuse by soldiers inside of Iraq. What I find amazing though, is the fact that people have been genuinely shocked by this, when if you look back at the reasons which were used to justify the unprovoked war and invasion, each claim to uphold the law sounds as ludicrous today, as it did when they were first used by the British Government in 2003…

The Iranian role in Yemen aided by the US
Mohamed Naji
November 15, 2009 – The United States served Iraq on a silver platter to the Iranian mullahs and it is doing the same thing today in Yemen, wrote Aymen al Hashimi in an opinion article published by the Kuwaiti news daily Al Seyassah. The US administration is clearly encouraging a remake of the Iraqi scenario in Yemen by turning a blind eye on the Iranian conspiracy aimed at destabilising and dividing the country. The Iranians are playing the same sectarian and ethnic card they used in Iraq to annihilate the population’s feelings of national belonging. The US State Department’s report on global religious freedom gave a nod to the Iranians by accusing the “authorities in Yemen of imposing restrictions on the Shiites, preventing them from performing their religion and oppressing them”. The issue of the al Houthi movement is but a small part of a large plot, meticulously prepared and aimed at blowing the region into minuscule states. Today, the Americans and the Iranians share the same objectives, particularly since the first need the latter to pull them out of the Iraqi swamp…

East Jerusalem settlements continue to expand despite Israeli government assurances
Saed Bannoura
November 15, 2009 – As part of the 3,000 units scheduled to be constructed in the coming months in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, construction has begun in Ras al-Amud, Pisgat Ze’ev and a number of other East Jerusalem settlements. This is despite a statement earlier this week by Housing and Construction Minister Ariel Attias that no new construction permits have been authorized since March. Earlier this year, the US President Barack Obama had demanded a construction freeze of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Jerusalem, but later backed down on that demand. Israeli settlement construction has rapidly increased since Obama backed down on his demand, with the Israeli Prime Minister stating publicly that 3,000 new units would be built in the coming months…

The Draining of Iraqi Rivers
iraqjustice.com
November 15, 2009 – Low electricity production is the least of the worries Iraqis living in the south, are coping with – sufficient drinking water is a much greater issue. Over 2 million Iraqis are threatened due to the meager water levels in the rivers running through the country. In the past, the southern parts of Iraq has enjoyed the abundance of water for agriculture and even the production of rice when the river Euphrates flooded over the southern marches. These marches are historically significant as they are connected to a several thousand year old culture of “marsh arabs” – or tribes living off the crops from these marches, creating a unique culture…

During the attacks, when the Israeli military banned foreign journalists from entering the Strip, Arce managed to stay inside Gaza and filmed how medical teams and hospitals were targeted by Israeli forces while performing their duties. Steve Amsel, Desertpeace
November 15, 2009 – When we have a situation where the religious leaders of a nation have gone mad, is that an indication that the God they supposedly serve has also gone mad? We have seen and heard rabbis in high position call for the complete annihilation of the Palestinian people, we have heard these very same ’sages’ call for the deportation of non Jews from the ‘Holy Land’… Now we see the chief rabbi of the Israeli army telling his troops that if they “show mercy to the enemy they will be dammed”…
