Clueless Idiots
Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
November 13, 2009 – This is a declaration! The wretched cluelessness of some in the American left is beyond description. While the Iranian butchers were in conference rooms making deals with imperialists in the preoperational stages of the invasion of Afghanistan, and later with the same gang of international power projectors as the invasion of Iraq was getting nearer, these leftists were busy defending the Iranian regime. As the collaboration of the Iranians with the American, the British, et. al. continued on, and as the Shiite militias were heavily armed (at least partly) by Iran and as they ethnically cleansed all the Baghdad neighborhoods, the American left defended the Iranian regime as if this theocratic dictatorship were the embodiment of revolutionary socialism itself. The cluelessness has continuously thickened over the years…

Former US diplomat Peter Galbraith grabs hundreds of millions in Iraqi oil money
By Alex Lantier
November 13, 2009 – Yesterday the New York Times reported the Norwegian financial newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv’s revelations that Peter Galbraith, a former US diplomat and advisor to the Kurdish regional government in northern Iraq, stands to make hundreds of millions of dollars in profit from Iraqi oil revenues. Galbraith’s profits would result from his cashing in on his links to the Kurdish regional leadership, and his role in drafting Iraq’s Constitution, shortly after the 2003 US invasion of Iraq. In 2004, Galbraith helped the Kurds arrange deals with Norwegian oil firm DNO and prepare for negotiations on the Iraqi Constitution, including controversial provisions on how to divide Iraq’s oil revenues. During the 2005 negotiations, the Times noted, Galbraith worked to ensure the draft included “clauses that he maintains will give the Kurds virtually complete control over all new oil finds on their territory.”…

Afghanistan: the case against the “good war”
Jonathan Neale
November 13, 2009 – …A negotiated settlement and withdrawal, however, would effectively mean the end of the “war on terror”, marked by an American defeat. The consequences for American power around the world would be shattering. For a generation after Vietnam ordinary Americans were able to refuse to fight overseas. After Afghanistan it would be the same. That would mean the end of American global dominance. The American strategy of simply waiting, however, is looking less and less clever. As the resistance grows, events are moving with increasing speed and the US forces are losing control of their choices. It is impossible to predict the timing. But in the first week in September this year US ground troops crossed the border and killed 20 civilians in a village in Waziristan. American military sources told the New York Times that this was the first of many planned incursions and that there have been many exchanges of fire across the border between American and Pakistani troops.25 Pressures are escalating. In this situation many on the left, and in the peace movement, in North America, Europe, India and Pakistan don’t want the Americans to actually leave. They want some kind of controlled settlement that excludes the Taliban. This is a fantasy. The Taliban have walked the walk and earned their place at the table. It is also self-deception. Afghanistan is one of the few places in the world where progressives and the left have consistently lined up with brutal imperial mass murder…!

Afghan Resistance Statement
Helmand, still the same as before.
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
November 13, 2009 – This year, the Helmand, a province located in the south of Afghanistan, became target of gruesome attacks of the British and American invaders. American troops sent to Afghanistan as per the new strategy of Obama were deployed in this province as a part of an effort by the American rulers to bolster the sagging morale of the despondent British soldiers there. Before launching the offensive against Mujahideen in Helmand province, American media started their own media war. They called the operation, the largest military operations ever launched by US marines after the Vietnam War and claimed that it would wipe out all Mujahideen in the area under a take, hold and build strategy…

High Court examines Israel’s refusal to allow a 21 year old student to complete her BA in Bethlehem
Palestine News Network – PNN
November 13, 2009 – A hearing will be held in the Israeli High Court of Justice in the case of Berlanty Azzam, a student at Bethlehem University who was detained and forcibly removed to the Gaza Strip. Berlanty was to complete her BA in Business Management in just two months. Israel admits that it has no security claims against Berlanty and that she was removed solely because the address listed on her identity card is in Gaza. Despite an explicit promise by the army – she was not given an opportunity to meet with her legal counsel or appeal to the court; instead she was promptly blindfolded, handcuffed, and removed to Gaza by night…

Beloved Enemy: Paying for the Privilege of Perpetual War
Chris Floyd
November 13, 2009 – Our American militarists love war so much that they even bankroll the enemy, just to keep the blood money flowing. This odd but absolutely crucial characteristic of the Never-Ending Terror War was borne out again in a remarkable story in the Guardian (with an expanded version in The Nation). As Aram Roston reports — and U.S. military officials openly admit — American taxpayers are giving Afghan insurgents at least 10-20 percent of the war machine’s multibillion-dollar transportation contracts. Hundreds of millions of dollars are flowing into Taliban coffers every year from bribes offered to stop insurgents from attacking supply convoys — convoys which are increasingly controlled by local warlords and druglords, including convicted drug dealers in the Corleone-like Karzai family…

Video: Road restrictions for West Bank Palestinians
AljazeeraEnglish
November 13, 2009 – Roads in the occupied Palestinian Territories are vital arteries connecting West Bank towns and villages. But major routes have been closed off to tens of thousands of Palestinians, for the benefit of a handful of Israeli settlers. Now, in the first ruling of its kind, Israel’s supreme court has ordered the army to open up a West Bank highway to Palestinian traffic again…

Fort Hood Tragedy Sparks Islamophobic Response
Stephen Lendman
November 13, 2009 – …War-induced stress sparks violence in the ranks. Fragging was the Vietnam term for rank-and-file soldiers killing NCO and officer superiors by fragmentation grenades, shootings, and other means. According to Texas A&M historian, Terry Anderson, the Army knew of at least 600 officer cases from 1969 – 1973, plus “another 1,400 who died mysteriously.” He believes that late in the conflict, the Army was more at war with itself than the Vietnamese…Despite today’s all-volunteer force, the longer America’s wars go on, the closer a similar state approaches critical mass because of declining moral, repeated deployments, combat stress, battle fatigue, and what Vietnam vet Steve Hesske wrote in 2003 on newdemocracyworld.org: the “negative universals in all warfare. Lousy nutrition. Cramped, dirty, awful living conditions. Terrible weather. Unreasonable often senseless demands made by superiors. And what Michael Herr describes in DISPATCHES (as) ‘long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of stark terror.’ “ Leaving Iraq occupied, letting conditions there fester, and expanding the Afghan-Pakistan theaters promise enough growing resentment in the ranks to perhaps cause the type Vietnam breakdown Col Heinl described. One no Islamophobic media response can hide or prevent…

Israel ‘personally attacking human rights group’ after Gaza war criticism
Chris McGreal
November 13, 2009 – America’s leading human rights organisation has accused Israel and its supporters of an “organised campaign” of false allegations and misinformation, including “extremely personal attacks” on its staff, in an attempt to discredit the group over its reports of war crimes in Gaza. Human Rights Watch (HRW) ties the campaign – which has included accusations that the group’s reports on the Jewish state are written by “anti-Israel ideologues” and that it has sought funds from Saudi Arabia – to a statement by a senior official in the Israeli prime minister’s office in June pledging to “dedicate time and manpower to combating” human rights organisations…

Taliban Establish Rival Government in Nuristan
After US Pullout, Taliban Appoints Officials
Jason Ditz
November 13, 2009 – In a sign that the Taliban’s de facto control over the Nuristan Province is becoming more and more formal, one of the commanders of the group’s forces in the province says the Taliban is setting up a rival government. According to Dost Mohammed, the commander in question, the group has established its own judiciary and is appointing administrative officials, and it setting about to provide basic needs to the remote province’s residents…

How Could This End Well?
Short Cuts in Afghanistan
By TARIQ ALI
November 13, 2009 – It’s been a bad autumn for Nato in Afghanistan, with twin disasters on the political and military fronts. First, Kai Eide, the UN headman in Kabul, a well-meaning, but not very bright Norwegian, fell out with his deputy, Peter Galbraith, who as the de facto representative of the US State Department had decreed that President Karzai’s election was rigged and went public about it. His superior continued to defend Hamid Karzai’s legitimacy. Astonishingly, the UN then fired Galbraith. This caused Hillary Clinton to move into top gear and the UN-supported electoral watchdog now ruled that the elections had indeed been fraudulent and ordered a run-off. Karzai refused to replace the electoral officials who had done such a good job for him the first time and his opponent withdrew. Karzai got the job…

Gaza Graduates Search for Vitamin W
By Mohammed Omer
November 13, 2009 – “We fast a long time,” says Gaza graduate Mona Ismail, 23. “Only to break our fast on a piece of onion.” She is speaking not of Ramadan but of the whole year, and year after year. She graduated in ‘academic excellence in English language’ from the Islamic University in Gaza. A prestigious course, and her dream. But now, there is no work she can find in line with her studies. “I am now considering community volunteer work with organisations that offer English classes,” she says, reached on phone from The Hague. Gaza, considered by much of the world a troubled slum, has near universal literacy, and fine centres of learning. But then, no work afterwards for most…

THE WALL MIGHT BE GONE IN GERMANY … BUT SO IS FREEDOM OF SPEECH
Ilan Pappe silenced in Munich
Steve Amsel, Desertpeace
November 13, 2009 – Anti-Zionist historian Prof. Ilan Pappe, one of the most important “New Historians”, was scheduled to speak last weekend at the Pedagogical Institute of Munich. But a letter received from the “Israeli-German association of Munich”, claiming that Pappe’s lecture would turn into “an anti-Israeli propaganda show,” led the Munich Municipality to reconsider the event. The municipality eventually did not let Pappe use the room, claiming its decision was prompted by fears of violent clashes breaking out in the area. The Munich police insisted that there was no danger of fear for the security of those attending the lecture…

Lebanese Students Advise Obama How to Get it Right
By Franklin Lamb- Beirut
November 13, 2009 – If those in Lebanon watching the news on 11/12/09 blinked they might have missed an interesting news item. It appeared at approximately 4:20 pm on Narharnet.com, the pro-US/Saudi news website. The news item read “4:16 pm, American Ambassador Michele Sison (sp) departed Lebanon for her country.” Ten minutes later the item disappeared and, as it turned out, the ten minutes was exactly how long it took for the US Embassy security and press office to inform Beirut media outlets that “the American Ambassadors movements are to be reported at least one hour after they occur not one minute.” The hasty departure of Ambassador Michele Sisson, according to the US Foreign Relations Committee office, may have been because the Obama administration is preparing for a ‘deep review’ of its 9 months effort in Lebanon and the region, debriefing key officials arriving from the area to participate…

US, British media transform tragedies into war propaganda
Bill Van Auken
November 13, 2009 – With the Obama administration on the verge of announcing an escalation that will almost certainly send tens of thousands more troops into the war in Afghanistan, popular opposition to the war continues to grow. According to a CNN poll released this week, 58 percent of the American people oppose the war. Across the Atlantic, antiwar sentiments in Britain, which has the second largest troop contingent in Afghanistan, is even higher. The latest poll shows just 21 percent supporting the war and 63 percent in favor of withdrawing British troops…

Eyewitnesses said the group was on a hunting trip near the border east of the Al-Bureij Refugee Camp. Palestinian medics said Israeli fire was directed at the youth. NOAM CHOMSKY ~~ DILETTANTE EXTRAORDINAIRE
Steve Amsel, Desertpeace
November 13, 2009 – At one time I was impressed every time Noam Chomsky spoke. Seeing his name on lists endorsing political actions was most encouraging… but NOT seeing him participate in those actions sort of put a damper on the situation. In recent days he has been very vocal about the situation in Gaza. He speaks of International Solidarity as a new phenomena in People’s Struggles. Did he never hear of the International Brigades that went to Spain to fight Franco? Did he not hear of the worldwide movement to eliminate apartheid in South Africa? Does he think Cuba could have survived as a free nation all these years without the support of International Support Groups? Chomsky overlooks the movements of Palestinians within Gaza and the Occupied West Bank. He gives the impression that without his endorsements, nothing will change. So typical of so many ‘ivory tower’ dwellers..
