‘My baby was blind. She couldn’t eat or speak. I mourn for her’ – families’ heartache over Falluja birth defects (video)
Martin Chulov
November 13, 2009 – Zainab Abdul Latif moves wearily between her three children, wiping their foreheads and propping them up in their wheelchairs. “Every day, they need intensive care,” the 29-year-old Falluja mother says. Neither her two sons, Amar, 5, and Moustafa, 3, or daughter, Mariam, 6, can walk or use their limbs. They speak two words – “mama, baba” – between them. All are in nappies. Zainab is one of many faces of Falluja’s postwar years, overwhelmed by a workload that she has no means to change. “They cannot eat, or drink by themselves and every day I have to take Mariam to the hospital.”…One of few people she can turn to is Dr Bassem Allah, the senior obstetrician who is chief custodian of Falluja’s newborns. During medical school he had to search Iraq for case studies of an infant with a birth defect. “It was almost impossible during the 80s,” he says. “Now, every day in my clinic or elsewhere in the hospital, there are large numbers of congenital abnormalities or cases of chronic tumours.” He pauses, his thoughts seemingly interrupted by the gravity of his words, then slowly continues. “Now, believe me, it’s like we are treating patients immediately after Hiroshima.”…

Huge rise in birth defects in Falluja
Iraqi former battle zone sees abnormal clusters of infant tumours and deformities (Video)
Martin Chulov in Falluja
November 13, 2009 – Doctors in Iraq’s war-ravaged enclave of Falluja are dealing with up to 15 times as many chronic deformities in infants and a spike in early life cancers that may be linked to toxic materials left over from the fighting. The extraordinary rise in birth defects has crystallised over recent months as specialists working in Falluja’s over-stretched health system have started compiling detailed clinical records of all babies born. Neurologists and obstetricians in the city interviewed by the Guardian say the rise in birth defects – which include a baby born with two heads, babies with multiple tumours, and others with nervous system problems – are unprecedented and at present unexplainable…

Arabia Felix in the Grinder.Yemen etc..
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
November 13, 2009 – …Take for instance the subject of Arabia Felix – ancient name for Yemen. I remember it was during the month of May 2009, while I was washing the dishes in a most monotonous manner, that Yemeni alarm bells flashed in front of my eyes right above my sink…Believe it or not but it’s true. I had that sinking feeling that things were going to get out of hand in Yemen and that was back in May 2009. I left the dishes in the sink and rushed to my computer and researched a little about Yemeni news, since Yemen was not being covered at all by any media outlets…and this is when I wrote on the 20th of May 2009, “Who’s next for dinner ?” Call it conspiratorial paranoia, but ever since the right wing U.S administration and its Zionists like Richard Perle (former adviser to Bibi Netanyahu) and other neocons concocted the blatant lies about Shiite oppression in Iraq…and ever since the Left and its other Zionist Chomsky spoke of “oppressed Shiites in the Arab world”, my antennas have been up… And I’ve mentioned it time and time again in almost all of my posts and I shall repeat it again tonight – wherever, whenever the Imperialist “Great Satan” needs to work out its plan, the “Axis of Evil” Iran will willingly play the sectarian card in the grand scheme of Divide and Rule. I will never cease repeating that. I also mentioned time and time again, that after Iraq, will come Pakistan and Yemen and the ultimate stop over will be Saudi Arabia…

Secret State Demands News Organization’s Web Logs, Gets Slapped Down
Tom Burghardt
November 13, 2009 – When the Independent Media Center (IMC) received a formal notice on January 30 from the Department of Justice, demanding they provide an Indianapolis grand jury with “details of all reader visits on a certain day,” the feisty left-wing news aggregators fought back, CBS News reported. Investigative journalist Declan McCullagh revealed that the “change” administration’s legal eagles issued an order that required the “Philadelphia-based Indymedia.us Web site ‘not to disclose the existence of this request’ unless authorized by the Justice Department, a gag order that presents an unusual quandary for any news organization.”…

Women’s rights are still the issue!
Hussein Al-alak, The Iraq Solidarity Campaign
November 13, 2009 – ..But to move the question of womens rights forward, we must base our discussion on the various realities which women are facing and engage with them, in an international campaign of unity which seeks to mobilise people in defence of womens liberation and towards the total emancipation of women, irrespective of their national boundaries. For us, in relation to both Iraq and the wider Middle East, the questions that need to be addressed by the womens movement globally include: The fact that only silence has fallen from the mouths of those who talk about freedom, in relation to the millions of women whose lives are being taken up in the profession of caring for the elderly, disabled, the sick and wounded as a direct result of the on-going wars and occupations. Barley nothing is being written about the women, whose bodies have become the only commodity that she posses, in the routine struggle of evading starvation and through whose degradation is the only means to purchase the necessities of survival…

Israeli ‘portable pain ray’ raises fears of non-lethal weapons proliferation
By Daniel Tencer
November 13, 2009 – Israeli researchers have developed a portable device that causes excruciating sensations of burning and can be built for just $250,000, raising fears that even the world’s poorest, most oppressive governments will now be able to use advanced non-lethal weapons on their civilian populations. The Man-Portable Active Denial System, developed by researchers at the College of Judea and Samaria, can beam a microwave ray that causes skin surface to heat up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, causing the nerve cells in the skin to think they’re on fire…

Young Israeli women follow their consciences into prison
Mya Guarnieri
November 13, 2009 – When most Israeli girls her age are planning how they will spend the time after their mandatory two-year stint in the armed forces, Emelia Markovitch, 19, is considering a spell in jail. The 19-year-old high school graduate has refused to serve in the Israel Defense Forces because she does not agree with the country’s continued occupation of Palestinian lands. But that decision will land her in prison. “I am afraid. I don’t know what will happen there,” she said. Ms Markovitch said she felt being jailed for her moral convictions was an “insult”. However, she is not alone. In October, 88 youngsters – some still enrolled in school, some recent graduates – sent a letter to Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, Ehud Barak, the defence minister, and the IDF’s chief of staff, Gaby Ashkenazi, stating their refusal to serve in the armed forces…

Iran armed forces chief backs nuclear deal
AFP
November 13, 2009 – Iranian armed forces chief of staff General Hassan Firouzabadi said on Friday he backed proposals for Tehran to ship out most of its stocks of low-enriched uranium in return for fuel for a reactor designed to produce medical isotopes. “We won’t suffer from an exchange of fuel,” the Mehr news agency quoted the general as saying. “On the contrary, in obtaining fuel enriched to 20 percent purity for the Tehran reactor, a million of our citizens will benefit from the medical treatment it can enable and we will prove at the same time the bona fides of our peaceful nuclear activities.”…
