Arrogant US Misses the Message From Pakistan’s People
William Pfaff
October 29, 2009 – …A recent and serious poll found that 11 percent of the Pakistani respondents said that al-Qaeda is the greatest threat to Pakistan today, 18 percent said India, and 59 percent said the United States. This was in August, before the most recent offensives of the Pakistani army against the Islamists in Waziristan and the Swat Valley, and the retaliatory city bombings that subsequently have taken place…

Lawyer: CIA kept detainees alive to keep torturing them
Muriel Kane
October 29, 2009 – possibleprison Lawyer: CIA kept detainees alive to keep torturing themAccording to human rights lawyer John Sifton, the CIA tortured some of its detainees in the War on Terror so severely that it had to take measures to keep them alive so they could continue being tortured. Sifton, who is the executive director of One World Research, told an interviewer for Russia Today that there was both a CIA detention program and a military detention program and that “The CIA program was by far the most secretive. … That’s the one that only had a few dozen detainees at any given time — but it’s the one that saw the biggest abuses, the most serious forms of torture.”…

Video: Palestinians homeless again after eviction
AljaeeraEnglish
October 29, 2009 – The United Nations is calling on Israel to immediately stop demolishing Palestinian homes in occupied East Jerusalem. The UN says 60,000 Palestinians may be at risk of being forcibly evicted. Israel says the houses are built without construction permits, which Palestinians say are almost impossible to obtain. Our correspondent Jacky Rowland is in Sheikh Jarrah where Israeli police dismantled a tent set up by a Palestinian family already evicted by Israeli orders in August…

Taliban Chief Blames Blackwater for Peshawar Blast
OutlookIndia
October 29, 2009 – Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud has claimed that the controversial American security firm Blackwater was behind the deadly bomb attack on a market in Peshawar that killed over 100 people. Hakimullah questioned why the Taliban should target the public when it was capable of carrying out attacks in Islamabad and targeting the army’s General Headquarters. In an interview with BBC Urdu, he claimed Blackwater and “Pakistani agencies” were involved in attacks in public places to discredit the militants…

AFGHANISTAN: U.S., NATO Forces Rely on Warlords for Security
By Gareth Porter*
October 29, 2009 – The revelation by the New York Times Wednesday that Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, has long been on the payroll of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency is only the tip of a much bigger iceberg of heavy dependence by U.S. and NATO counterinsurgency forces on Afghan warlords for security, according to a recently published report and investigations by Australian and Canadian journalists…

Facing Tomorrow
Ayman Nijim
October 29, 2009 – The time has come for looking deeper into the Palestinian political system and empowerment of the Palestinian, Arab and international think tanks worldwide to face the thought-provoking challenges of the Palestinian divide and its negative impacts on the Palestinians, their neighbors and the international community. If it matters, measure it. Firstly, the delay of the Goldstone Report has led to a heated controversy in the Palestinian arena, since the two rivals, Fateh and Hamas, spared no effort to gain semi-victory of the elections by inciting their supporters on their own information: nothing has been achieved for both factions since they tried to put the cart before the horse and using the double-standard methods in maintaining factional interests…

Bethlehem University Student is Blindfolded, Handcuffed, and Taken to Gaza by Force
As military lawyer gives false promise
by IMEMC
October 29, 2009 – Berlanty Azzam, 21, was arrested yesterday while crossing from one part of the West Bank to another – just because her address in the Israeli-controlled Population Registry is registered in the Gaza Strip. The Military Legal Adviser’s Office promised not to remove her to Gaza pending a court petition this morning by Gisha challenging the removal. Despite the promise, Berlanty was blindfolded, handcuffed, and taken to Gaza by force late last night…

America’s Media? A Colonial Force for Israel’s Infallibility
Mohamed Khodr
October 29, 2009 – …It is axiomatic that “their/our” news media protects Israel from any negative stories that may expose its war crimes; crimes against humanity, its three-year siege of 1.5 million Palestinians denied access to food, water and medicines, its imprisonment and torture of women and children as well as one third of the Palestinian elected representatives. It publicly states with all the chutzpah it only possesses that it does not want peace and let the world go to hell…

Taliban denies Peshawar blast role
Aljazeera.net
October 29, 2009 – The Taliban and al-Qaeda have distanced themselves from Wednesday’s deadly market blast in Peshawar that claimed 105 lives, saying “their main targets are the security forces, and not innocent civilians”. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in a statement sent to the media on Thursday, condemned the car bomb attack that tore through a crowded market and denied any involvement in the explosion…

Attack on UN in Kabul in lead-up to sham Afghan election
By Peter Symonds
October 29, 2009 – An attack by Taliban fighters on a UN guesthouse in the Afghan capital, Kabul, has underscored the fragility of the US-led occupation of the country in the lead-up to the second round of presidential elections on November 7. At least 12 people died in the raid on the Bakhtar Guesthouse yesterday morning, including six international UN staff, two Afghan guards and three Taliban gunmen. The brother-in-law of Gul Afgha Sherzai, the governor of the eastern city of Jalalabad, was also killed. At least nine other UN staff were wounded… A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, told the New York Times that the attack on the UN guesthouse was meant to warn people not to take part in the runoff election between incumbent president Hamid Karzai and his challenger Abdullah Abdullah. The UN is playing a major role in preparing the poll after the first round was ruled inconclusive amid massive electoral fraud on the part of both candidates…

Ya’alon: “To Ensure The Army’s Freedom To Act, I Will Not Travel To Europe”
Saed Bannoura
October 29, 2009- Israeli Vice Prime Minister, Moshe Ya’alon, had to cancel a trip to Europe due to fears that he would be apprehended for committing war crimes against the Palestinians during his service as the Israeli Army Chief of Staff. He said that he is willing to skip trips to Europe to ensure that the Israeli Army has the freedom to act. In 2002, Ya’alon ordered the assassination of Salaah Shihada, one of the leaders of Hamas’ armed wing. The army shelled the residential building where Shihada lived and killed fourteen civilians, including children…

Israeli blockade strangling Gaza agriculture
Mya Guarnieri
October 29, 2009 – Recently, Israel announced that it would import palm fronds from the Gaza Strip for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. The move came at the behest of Minister of Religious Services, Yakov Margi, who feared that a shortage of palm fronds and a local monopoly on the item would send prices skyrocketing for the Jewish holiday, which came in early October this year. Before the holiday, palm fronds are in high demand as religiously observant Jews build thatched huts that commemorate the 40 years that, according to Biblical tradition, the ancient Hebrews wandered the desert. Once Sukkot begins, however, palm fronds are no longer needed. Initially, the decision to allow Gaza to export palm fronds seemed like an easing, however small, of the Israeli siege. But according to Gaza’s farmers, exporters and the Israeli non-governmental organization Gisha, it wasn’t…

Israelis at center of ecstasy drug trade
By Nathan Guttman
October 29, 2009 – Israel is at the center of international trade in the drug ecstasy, according to a document published last week by the U.S. State Department. In recent years, organized crime in Israel, some with links to criminal organizations in Russia, have come to control the distribution of the drug in Europe, according to a Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs document. The same document also points out that Israeli criminal groups have a hand in the distribution of ecstasy in North America…

Tipping the balance in East Jerusalem
By Jacky Rowland
October 29, 2009 – I had just left home this morning when I saw a series of police vehicles turning into my road. I have recently moved to Sheikh Jarrah, a neighbourhood in occupied East Jerusalem where Israel pursues a policy of evicting Palestinians from their homes. I’d been thinking that I was late for work – in fact I was bang on time for a story. I did a U-turn and followed the police convoy. They were heading towards a Palestinian house that had been the scene of an eviction at the beginning of August. The Ghawi family had been living there for more than 50 years, but an Israeli court ruled that Jews were the rightful owners. So the Palestinians were thrown out onto the street and Jewish settlers moved in. Finding themselves homeless, the Ghawi family had set up a tent on the pavement opposite their old house. This flimsy structure, containing a few foam mattresses and plastic chairs, was the target of the latest Israeli demolition order. The police acted with swift, brutal efficiency. Within minutes they had torn down the tent and loaded it, along with its contents, onto the back of a couple of pick-up trucks…

Annals of Continuity: The Bush Regime’s Arbitrary Power Over Life and Liberty Still in Force — and Still in Use
Chris Floyd
October 29, 2009 – Ted Rall takes up a theme I’ve been sounding here (and elsewhere) since November 2001: The president of the United States now claims the right and power to arbitrarily designate anyone on earth an “enemy” and have them seized without charges, held indefinitely without trial — or simply killed outright. As we’ve often reported here, George W. Bush asserted these dread powers by executive order — and as Rall notes, Barack Obama has not only not rescinded them, he has made energetic use of them, particularly in his death-by-drone assassination program in Pakistan…

Testimony: Israeli Army deports Muhammad Abu Sultan to the Gaza Strip and prohibits him from rejoining his wife and children in Tulkarm, October 2009
B’Tselem
October 29, 2009 – …My husband had a Gazan resident identity card. A few years ago, the Palestinian Authority announced that residents of Gaza living in the West Bank could exchange their identity cards for West Bank identity cards. Muhammad went to the Palestinian Population Administration office in Ramallah and on 1 October 2007, he was issued a West Bank identity card. He did it too feel safer, even though he used to travel to Nablus, Ramallah, Jenin, and Jericho and never had any problems or trouble at checkpoints. On 12 January 2008, we went to Nablus on a visit. We entered the city from the west, via the Beit Iba checkpoint, and crossed without any problem. At noon, on the way home, the soldiers detained Muhammad at the checkpoint. I waited for him there until midnight. I begged the soldiers to release him. My sisters, who also live in the Tulkarm refugee camp, came to find out from the soldiers what had happened, but it didn’t help. Around midnight, the soldiers told us that my husband would be sent to the Gaza Strip. I begged them and explained that we’d been married for six years and had small children who needed their father, but nothing helped…

US Cedes De Facto Control Over East Afghan Province to Taliban
Handful of Troops Left to Protect Governor
Jason Ditz
October 29, 2009 – Following an all-out assault by several hundred insurgents on two US outposts in Nuristan earlier this month, the US quickly abandoned both sites. The Pentagon maintains that they had been planning to abandon the bases at any rate, and that it was only a coincidence they were attacked just a few days before the move. Two other US posts in Nuristan has been attacked last year, and were also abandoned…

UN sets date for Gaza report debate
Aljazeera.net
October 29, 2009 – The UN General Assembly has said it will meet next week to consider a UN report that accused both Israeli forces and the Palestinian group Hamas of war crimes and possible crimes against humanity during the Gaza war last winter. The report, compiled by a panel led by Richard Goldstone, a South African jurist, was endorsed by the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council on October 16, which recommended that the General Assembly take it up during the current session…

Dozens of security officials detained in Iraq bombings
From Jomana Karadsheh, CNN
October 29, 2009 – More than 60 people responsible for security in the area of Baghdad where bombers killed 160 people this week have been detained amid growing criticism of a security breakdown in the capital. Maj. Gen. Qassim Atta, spokesman for the Baghdad Operations Command, confirmed the detentions but did not say whether the people were negligent or complicit in the attack. However, the detentions come amid sharp criticism in Baghdad of security forces, including a call from the Baghdad provincial council for the sacking of senior security officials, including the interior minister…

Iraq inquiry: silencing witnesses
Index on Censorship
October 29, 2009 – Public hearings into the Iraq war are set to begin on 24 November, the panel’s chairman Sir John Chilcot said today. But witnesses still do not know whether the evidence they give will ever make its way into the public domain, says Chris Ames. As the Chilcot Inquiry into the Iraq war announces its first public hearings, serious concerns about censorship and secrecy are beginning to arise. Some of those who are thinking about giving evidence are wondering how free they will be to do so and whether the evidence they present will ever see the light of day…

Ahmadinejad says West now cooperating with Iran
By NASSER KARIMI (AP)
October 29, 2009 — Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Thursday that Tehran will not give up its nuclear program, but noted that the West and Iran are now cooperating — remarks that appear to reinforce Iran’s support for the general outline of a U.N.-drafted nuclear deal. The speech by Iran’s president came on the same day Iran has promised to deliver its decision on the U.N. pact, which seeks to ease Western worries about Tehran’s ability to produce a nuclear warhead… Ahmadinejad said the West has moved “from confrontation to interaction” with Iran over its uranium enrichment program…
