Americans: Looters & Thieves
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
October 24, 2009 – So much has been stolen and looted from Iraq, from my Beloved’s lap, treasures, boxes, and shelves… If I tell you that it is in the billion of Dollars, be it in cash or or in things/goods…I am not exaggerating one bit. I, for one was a witness, and I saw it with my own two eyes, 675 million dollars in cash, taken by the US soldiers in trunks in 2003, to be “counted in New York”. This money is still in New York. I have hundreds of stories of US soldiers looting homes they raided, stealing the money, the jewelery, even the food… And here, I don’t even wish to broach the subject of the looting of Iraq’s antiquities, by your own soldiers and even by your U.N team of inspectors, inspectors fo WMDs which were never found and that was back in the 90’s. They were caught time and time again at the borders smuggling Iraq’s ancient artifacts…

Obama Administration Takes from American Farmers, Gives to Israel
Policy change slips under the radar
By Alison Weir
October 24, 2009 – At a time of financial crisis in the United States in which thousands of Americans have lost their jobs and homes, an Israeli news service reports that President Obama has just signed a presidential memo eliminating a tariff on Israel that protected American dairy farmers and that raised money for the American economy. In addition, according to the Israeli report, US trade authorities have ordered the return of $17,000 to an Israeli export agent for a levy paid for butter produced by an Israeli company. The move comes at a time when American dairy farmers have been facing what industry representatives call a “crisis.” According to the National Milk Producers Federation website, “U.S. dairy producers have been facing unprecedented losses over the past year due to low milk prices and high input costs…

Video – INSIDE IRAQ: Peter Galbraith
Aljazeera.net
October 24, 2009 – It was only a few weeks ago that Peter Galbraith, the former US diplomat, was discharged from his role as the UN’s second highest-ranking official in Afghanistan. The dismissal was issued after Galbraith claimed that his boss had covered up fraud in the country’s recent elections – allegations that were vehemently denied. On the 10th October, Norwegian newspaper Dagens Noeringsliv printed allegations that Peter Galbraith’s company, Porcupine LP, had business dealings with Norwegian oil company DNO. And, as a consultant for the Kurdistan regional government during discussions over the Iraqi constitution in 2005, he claims he advised Kurdish leaders seeking to secure ownership and control of the region’s oil resources. Yet he now stands accused of having had a vested interest in Kurdish independence…

Anti-Goldstone Campaign Creates Fake NGOs, Human Rights Website
Richard Silverstein
October 24, 2009 – Just after the Goldstone Report was released the Israeli foreign ministry began an online ad campaign offering the “facts” about Operation Cast Lead. Clearly, someone feels this campaign was too straightforward and perhaps ineffective. Now a new online ad campaign has been created by a hazy group of right-wing pro-Israel sources. The ad, discovered by reader John Dickerson to be running at at least one progressive website, Antiwar Newswire, features a link to UN Goldstone Gaza Report. This is a fairly straightforward hasbara site offering media analysis and Israeli government rebuttals of the Report. But there are several other interesting aspects of the site…

Afghan bomb kills two US soldiers
AFP
October 24, 2009 – Two US soldiers have been killed by a home-made bomb in southern Afghanistan, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force said on Saturday. The troops were killed on Friday, the same day a Danish soldier lost his life in clashes with Taliban-led insurgents in the same region, the force added without giving further details. “Two US service members died as a result of an improvised explosive device attack… in southern Afghanistan” on October 23, the force said in a statement…

Whatever happened to the war for oil?
Jeffrey Blankfort
Critics of the Iraq war who claimed that it was a war for Israel, engineered by the neocons in the Bush administration and promoted by their allies in the media, were routinely disparaged by the well known pundits of the US Left and the leading organizations of the anti-war movement that insisted that it was a war for access and control over Iraq’s oil. This was, they declared, in so many words, a “no-brainer.” Without casting aspersions on the wisdom of the latter, this story, in which T Boone Pickens complains that US firms have been shut out of Iraq’s oil market, is but the latest to undermine the “war for oil” theory…

Pakistan must review its partnership with the US war on terror which has already turned into a war of terror for Pakistan
By Javed I. Chaudry
October 24, 2009 – It is highly unlikely that Obama can deliver peace for which he won the Nobel prize merely on the basis of his oratories and the political rhetoric. But, Pakistan can help him achieve exactly that by distancing itself from the so called war on terror. By now it is clear that the world at large has no illusions about the American war on terror which is basically a metaphor for the American geo-political interests in the region to pave the way for its pipeline to tap into the future energy resources of the Central Asia. It is an open secret that Pakistan was coerced into taking part in the American invasion of Afghanistan following the events of September 11, 2001. Gen. Musharraf had little choice but to comply or risk getting Pakistan bombed back to the stone age…

We are Not Always ‘Equal’
By Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
October 24, 2009 – …The point here is that while the Palestinians should be held accountable for their actions just like any other people in this world, they should not be held to the same standards as their occupier, simply for the very reason of their occupied status. When addressing Israel’s relationship with the Palestinians, the first thing that should be mentioned is its 42-year old occupation of this people and its land. If Israel is held accountable for this and this only – an occupation that has resulted in a slew of international law breaches and violations of human rights – then the international community’s dealing with us – including the future of the Goldstone Report – may finally become more balanced and justice may actually be served…

Abbas, whose term expired in early 2009, “must be tried for usurping power,” deputy Palestinian parliamentary speaker Ahmed Bahar told a news conference in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. Late on Friday, Abbas decreed elections be held on January 24, in a move seen as turning up the heat on Hamas to sign an Egyptian-brokered deal for Palestinian unity…

Britons losing confidence in Afghan victory: poll
AFP
October 24, 2009 — The public is losing confidence that the war against insurgents in Afghanistan can be won, according to a new poll published on Saturday. The YouGov survey for Channel 4 News found 48 percent of respondents thought troops were not winning the war with the Taliban and victory “is not possible” — a surge from 36 percent in August 2007. A further 36 percent thought troops were not winning yet but victory was possible eventually, down three points since 2007…

Saed Bannoura
October 24, 2009 – Dr. Ahmad Bahar, deputy head of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), stated Thursday that any elections without reconciliation and unity will not be accepted by the Palestinian people as such elections would lead to further divisions. Bahar added that national unity talks, far away from American pressures and the Quartet are the only means to achieve unity. He also said that the Palestinian people want free and fair elections, and that Hamas cannot accept the conditions of the Quartet Committee as a precondition for the elections…

Soldier’s mother wants Tony Blair to answer for Iraq war
Karen McVeigh
October 24, 2009 – The mother of a teenage soldier killed in Iraq broke down today as she told an inquiry she wanted Tony Blair to be held to account for the “illegal war”. Anne Donnachie, whose son Rifleman Paul Donnachie was killed in Basra in April 2007, was among a number of families addressing the Iraq inquiry committee at a regional meeting in Bristol. Earlier this month in a similar meeting in London, Sir John Chilcot, the committee chairman who had invited the bereaved families to tell him the issues they believe he should focus on, was left in no doubt what they wanted investigated – legality, equipment and the role of Blair…

Robert Bernstein: Human Shield for Criticism of Israel
By Max Kantar
October 24, 2009 – Earlier this week the New York Times published an op-ed article, Rights Watchdog, ‘Lost in the Mideast’ written by Robert L. Bernstein, the founding chairman emeritus of Human Rights Watch. The editorial amounts to one regurgitation of Israeli propaganda after another in an effort to delegitimize mainstream criticism of Israeli policies in the international human rights community. The timing of Bernstein’s article is instructive; its publication in the New York Times comes on the heels of the release of the Goldstone Report as the intellectual apologists for Israeli crimes in the U.S. go into ultra-hysteria mode to save the already eroding image of their favorite client state…

Shoes fly as Bush tells audience, ‘I did not sell my soul’
By John Byrne
October 24, 2009 – A day after an effigy of the Grim Reaper stalked his speech in Edmonton, Canada, former President George W. Bush was on the defensive over his personal salvation. Speaking to a $400-a-seat crowd in Montreal, Bush told the roughly 1,000 attendees that his presidential decisionmaking was principled and moral. “I am confident that I made decisions based on principle, that I made calls as best I could, and I did not sell my soul,” Bush said. Outside his speech, the scene was anything but calm…
