Reports of indiscriminate bombing in South Waziristan
By James Cogan
October 21, 2009 – The first five days of the Pakistani offensive against Taliban and Mehsud tribe militants in the agency of South Waziristan have produced minimal military gains and a rapidly developing humanitarian crisis as tens of thousands of terrified civilians flee the fighting. In the northern area of South Waziristan, the army has made little progress in advancing from its base at Razmak to capture the main Taliban-held town of Makeen, just five kilometres away. The Taliban have another stronghold at the town of Ladha, which is located seven kilometres south of Makeen. Both towns are being subjected to air and ground bombardment…

MOSUL- BREAKING NEWS.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
October 21, 2009 – Sources have confirmed new details regarding the participation of units of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the latest raids in Mosul and the province of Salah Al-Deen which lead to the capture of officers of the former Iraqi army, Ba’athists, and other national leaders. The participating units of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards were commanded by a high ranking commander of the Iranian revolutionary guard named Akbar Wahidi who was operating out of the Iranian embassy in Baghdad. The raids were coordinated with Nouri Al-Maliki and unfolded as follows…We urge all national and satelite media to provide extensive coverage of these developments and protect the lives of those captured before they are taken to Iran and killed or killed in Iraq itself. We hold the occupying power fully responsible for all the actions of the occupation government and any harm that may come to the captured Iraqi nationals…

Criminals shouldn’t be allowed to investigate themselves
By Khalid Amayreh
October 21, 2009 – In its rabid efforts to whitewash the Goldstone report, Israel is likely to carry out another disingenuous probe into its genocidal onslaught against the Gaza Strip nearly ten months ago. The report, compiled by South African judge Richard Goldstone, himself a Jew, accused Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the deliberate targeting of innocent civilians. As many as 1400 Palestinians, mostly non-combatants including more than 330 children, were killed during the 22-day campaign which some historians and intellectuals compared to the allied saturation bombing of the German city of Dresden at the close of the Second World War. Israel has already conducted a number of “investigations” into the Gaza blitzkrieg which exonerated the Israeli army of any wrongdoing. However, nearly everyone familiar with patterns of Israeli behavior realizes that investigations by Israel into crimes committed by Israel didn’t have an iota of credibility…

British secret service chief justifies torture
Chris Marsden
October 21, 2009 – With efforts by the Labour government to suppress evidence of collusion with the United States threatened with collapse, the head of Britain’s secret service, MI5, last week made a public defence of the use of torture to obtain evidence against alleged terrorists. MI5 Director General Jonathan Evans spoke at Bristol University on October 15, even as Lord Justice Thomas and Mr. Justice Lloyd Jones were preparing to issue a judgment on whether the Labour government should release a CIA briefing detailing the 2002 interrogation of British resident Binyam Mohamed…

As unemployment and poverty rise
Obama turns to the financial elite for campaign cash
By Bill Van Auken
October 21, 2009 – Under conditions of growing unemployment and deepening social misery for working people throughout the US, President Barack Obama flew into New York City Tuesday to raise millions of dollars in campaign donations from America’s financial elite. He was expected to clear at least $3 million, largely from a Manhattan bash with an entry fee of $30,400 per couple—the maximum contribution allowed by law. According to the Los Angeles Times, four of the seven co-chairs of the event and about a third of the guests come from the big banks and Wall Street…

Israeli intelligence pose as Arabs to spy on citizens
Jonathan Cook
October 21, 2009 – Civil rights groups in Israel have expressed outrage at the announcement last week that a special undercover unit of the police has been infiltrating and collecting intelligence on Israel’s Palestinian Arab minority by disguising its officers as Arabs. It is the first public admission that the Israeli police are using methods against the country’s 1.3 million Arab citizens that were adopted long ago in the occupied territories, where soldiers are regularly sent on missions disguised as Palestinians…

Pentagon used psychological operation on US public, documents show
By Brad Jacobson
October 21, 2009 – A months-long review of documents and interviews with Pentagon personnel has revealed that the Bush Administration’s military analyst program — aimed at selling the Iraq war to the American people — operated through a secretive collaboration between the Defense Department’s press and community relations offices. Raw Story has also uncovered evidence that directly ties the activities undertaken in the military analyst program to an official US military document’s definition of psychological operations — propaganda that is only supposed to be directed toward foreign audiences…

FLAMES FROM AFGHANISTAN IGNITE PAKISTAN
Eric S. Margolis
October 21, 2009 – The eight-year war in Afghanistan has now set Pakistan on fire. What began in 2001 as a supposedly limited American anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan has now become a spreading regional conflict. Pakistan’s army just launched a major ground and air offensive against rebellious Pashtun tribes in wild South Waziristan which Islamabad claims is the epicenter of the growing insurgency against the US-backed government of Asif Ali Zardari. It’s likely the rebellious Pashtun tribesmen will simply fade into the mountains, leaving the army stuck garrisoning major towns and trying to protect roads. A similar uprising in Kashmir has tied down 500,000 Indian soldiers and paramilitary police. Washington, by contrast, is delighted. It has long been a key US goal to press Pakistan’s tough army into fighting both Pashtun rebels in Pakistan, and the Pashtun Taliban in Afghanistan. Pakistan has long hesitated doing so, loathe to wage war on its own tribal people. The US is paying most of the bills for the Waziristan offensive…

Obama surprises Peres gala event with special message
US-Israel Ties ‘More Than Strategic Alliance’
Haaretz
October 21, 2009 – U.S. President Barack Obama surprised attendants of the 2009 Presidential Conference with a special recorded message, in which he called Israeli-U.S. relations a “bond that is much more than a strategic alliance.” “The American people and the Israeli peoples share a faith in the future and believe that democracies can shape their own destinies and that opportunities should be available to all,” said Obama, in a message apparently unanticipated by the conference participants, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In a personal greeting to President Shimon Peres, Obama called his Israeli counterpart an “extraordinary example how courage and perseverance help shape the future…

Ministry of detainees: 16 prisoners suffer from cancer in Israeli jails
Palestinian Information Center
October 21, 2009 – The Palestinian ministry of prisoners’ affairs said Wednesday that the number of cancer patients in Israeli jails rose again to 16 prisoners after a new prisoner joined the list. Information director of the ministry Riyadh Al-Ashqar stated that the number of Palestinian prisoners suffering from caner had declined to 15 patients after Israel released prisoner Abdelmahdi Zeidat because of the deterioration of his health, but the number climbed again after prisoner Hamza Tarayra developed a serious oral cancer which prompted the Ofer prison administration to release him…

Iran, world powers agree to draft deal on uranium
By Borzou Daragahi
October 21, 2009 – The head of the world’s atomic energy watchdog said Iran and world powers have until Friday to approve a proposed deal to transfer most of Iran’s nuclear material abroad to be reformatted for medical purposes. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei disclosed no details about the draft deal, hammered out over 2 1/2 days of talks between Iranian, American, French and Russian diplomats in Vienna. But he said that it reflected a “balanced approach” that would help Iran fuel a medical research reactor for diagnosing and treating cancer while building confidence to resolve long-standing suspicions about the nature of Tehran’s nuclear ambitions…

Obamacare Targets Entitlements
by Stephen Lendman
October 21, 2009 – …As bad, millions will be left uninsured or underinsured as Washington cuts back on its obligation to provide universal quality care as a human right. Instead, final legislation will be class-based on the ability to pay with growing millions of poor and lower income people offered sub-standard care, millions left out entirely, and a time coming when only those who can afford it will be covered, no others. That’s Obamacare’s bottom line, but expect no public discourse to explain it…

Diaries Recounting Zubaydah’s Torture Should Be Given to Defense Attorneys, Judge Rules
Jason Leopold
October 21, 2009 – Guantanamo detainee Abu Zubaydah is expected to finally gain access to diaries he wrote during the years while he was being tortured by CIA interrogators. A federal court judge has ordered the government to turn over unredacted volumes of the diaries and other “specified” writings to defense attorneys representing Zubaydah. Zubaydah was the first high-value detainee captured after 9/11. He was repeatedly waterboarded and subjected to brutal torture techniques by CIA interrogators at secret black-site prisons…

Another breach in Israel’s wall of impunity
Hasan Abu Nimah,
October 21, 2009 – … It may be too early to hope that the Goldstone report will result directly in Israeli leaders facing trial in international courts; there are still too many opportunities for Israel and its backers to block such action. But Goldstone marks another major breach in the wall of Israeli impunity that is slowly but surely crumbling. It is a matter of time before Israel faces the consequences of its crimes and all who support peace and justice should welcome and work for that with renewed vigor…

Which Islam are you afraid of?
Sholto Byrnes
October 21, 2009 – …Quite apart from the fact that this seemed a rather off-beam response (should I not have blogged about it?!), I am left less angry and more saddened and baffled that so many people appear to identify this one major world religion as such a threat – to their way of life, to their values, even to the very future of Western civilisation, according to some. Because what they are doing is taking the views and actions of a minority of extremists and then claiming that they are representative of all Muslims. It’s one thing when controversialists use this odious tactic to further their media presence. When I interviewed the US commentator Ann Coulter in New York a few years ago, she consistently used the world “Muslim” when she meant “Muslim terrorists”. Her response when I picked her up on this was merely to say: “You can make that argument, but all I see is Muslims killing people.” …

A generation traumatized
Rami Almeghari writing from the occupied Gaza Strip

Whatever Bibi Wants, Bibi Gets
Will the real Barack Obama please stand up to Israel?
Yousef Munayyer
October 21, 2009 – Barack Obama is a rookie. At least, this is what the Israeli prime minister seems to think. So far, Benjamin Netanyahu has been able to maximize his gains at the expense of the U.S. president and the Palestinians while solidifying his own position in the process. Consider last month’s trilateral meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. After months of tough and very public statements by top U.S. officials, Netanyahu was able to get the leader of the free world to concede on a settlement freeze and gave nothing in return. For Israeli hawks and their allies in the United States, this was a victory. But it did not come without costs, even leaving aside the effect on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s domestic popularity. Heads of state around the world paid attention, and surely some of them thought of Obama: This man is a pushover…
