Iraq occupation set to continue despite imperialist lies
So-called withdrawal frees U.S. military for expansion of Afghanistan occupation
James Circello
The debate among the politicians in Washington and the Pentagon brass about their next steps in the brutal war against the people of Afghanistan are splashed across the front pages. The occupation of Iraq has been given a back seat in the discussion, despite continuing U.S. violence and popular resistance. The mainstream media, which exists to serve the interests of the capitalist class, is fashioning the so-called withdrawal as if it were a real diminishing of the occupation…

Obama Steps Up Drone Bombings Despite Civilian Deaths
Sherwood Ross
October 19, 2009 – “Even if a precise account is elusive,” writes Jane Mayer in the October 26th The New Yorker, “the outlines are clear: the C.I.A. has joined the Pakistani intelligence service in an aggressive campaign to eradicate local and foreign militants, who have taken refuge in some of the most inaccessible parts of the country.” Based on a study just completed by the non-profit, New America Foundation of Washington, D.C., “the number of drone strikes has risen dramatically since Obama became President,” Mayer reports. In fact, the first two strikes took place on Jan. 23, the President’s third day in office and the second of these hit the wrong house, that of a pro-government tribal leader that killed his entire family, including three children, one just five years of age…

Up to 320 Civilians Killed in Pakistan Drone War: Report
By Noah Shachtman
October 19, 2009 – How many civilians have been killed in the U.S. drone war in Pakistan? The number could be as high as 320 innocents, according to an analysis released today by the New America Foundation. That’s about a third of the 1,000 or so people slain in the robotic aircraft attacks since 2006. Reliable information from the drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal areas is incredibly hard to come by. The government not only keeps news organizations out, it also blocks aid groups, like Doctors Without Borders…

Spell “Quagmire” A-F-G-H-A-N-I-S-T-A-N
We don’t know whom we’re fighting and “success” is impossible to define.
Joshua Holland,
October 19, 2009 – …And even if one rejects that view, there is no reason to take it for granted, as Diehl does, that the addition of 40,000 troops would have an impact on the course of the conflict. There is no small amount of self-deception in the idea that the World’s Only Super-Power ® has the ability to influence events abroad that’s limited only by its citizens’ tolerance for a given conflict. That’s evident from the WaPo’s own reporting; buried way down i close to the last paragraph of an analysis of the debate over escalating in Afghanistan is this insight, which seems pretty valuable: Still others believe that the United States and its allies have deceived themselves into thinking the Taliban and its allies — the Haqqani and Hezb-e Islami groups — can be broken into pieces by either carrots or sticks. “It’s a nationally organized movement,” said Gilles Dorronsoro of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “The Taliban are not this kind of loosely organized group, doing whatever they want at the local level. It’s wishful thinking. Not true. Dead wrong.” “Take the Taliban seriously,” Dorronsoro advised. “Stop thinking that they are this kind of losers. These guys are really, really good. . . . They know why they are fighting.”…

David Rohde’s insights into what motivates the Taliban
Glenn Greenwald
The New York Times’ David Rohde writes about the seven months he was held hostage by a group of extremist Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan and conveys this observation about what motivates them: My captors harbored many delusions about Westerners. But I also saw how some of the consequences of Washington’s antiterrorism policies had galvanized the Taliban. Commanders fixated on the deaths of Afghan, Iraqi and Palestinian civilians in military airstrikes, as well as the American detention of Muslim prisoners who had been held for years without being charged. Apparently, when we drop bombs on Muslim countries — or when Israel attacks Palestinians — that fuels anti-American hatred and militarism among Muslims. The same outcomes occur when we imprison Muslims without charges in places like Guantanamo and Bagram. Imagine that…

Iran, western powers hold ‘constructive’ uranium talks
AFP
October 19, 2009 – Iran and world powers on Monday held new talks on a uranium enrichment deal which UN watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei said got off to a “constructive” start though no breakthrough was announced. “We had this afternoon quite a constructive meeting. We’re off to a good start. Most of the technical issues have been discussed,” ElBaradei said after a meeting between Iran, France, Russia and the United States at the International Atomic Energy Agency headquarters. The meeting on a proposal for Russia and France to enrich uranium for Iran was to resume on Tuesday, he added…

A Tragically Bad and Unsustainable Idea
Zionism: an Anti-Semite’s Dream?
By JOHN V. WHITBECK
October 19, 2009 – …Democracy and equal rights in a unitary state in the land which, until 1948, was called Palestine, coupled with freedom of choice (with attractive choices for resettlement being generously provided) for those who would prefer not to live in such a state, would offer a far greater hope for eventual peace in the Middle East than continued cyncical recycling of a partition-based “peace process” which is now widely recognized to be both a fraud and a farce and which, even if “successful”, would simply legitimize, reward and perpetuate ethnic cleansing, racism and apartheid — scarcely a recipe for lasting peace, let alone for any measure of justice…

A Country Of Sacred Cows And Ten Commandments
By Ershad Abubacker
October 19, 2009 – …The world needs to change its conception of what Israel is. Israel likes to present itself as a little country surrounded by a sea of hostile Arabs trying to push them into the sea, when they just want peace and no violence. But in reality Israel is the fifth largest nuclear power in the world with nearly 300 nuclear warheads making a regional super power and the safest custodian of all the murky Middle East oil reserves for US interests. By being evasive and repressive to any sort of criticism and silencing anyone and everyone who criticizes Israeli policies with counter attacks of disparage and malicious lies, Israel tends to elevate itself to the position of a Sacred Cow and in doing so it not only strengthens the public opinion against it but in fact detracts from the very real threats that Anti-Semitism does pose and if this trend continues, the word Anti-Semitism will begin to look more unrespectable. It’s high time that Israel must understand that criticizing Israeli government’s foreign policy for assassinating people or for shooting children, is by no way Anti-Semitic, it’s just being humane…

At another checkpoint further down the road, a young Afghan constable rummages through luggage as an older officer helps him identify unfamiliar gadgets. Remember Falluja. .. and the mothers who cannot forget
Charlie Pottins
October 19, 2009 – Vowing revenge, the US forces launched two operations to retake Falluja, first Operatioon Vigilant Resolve, and then Operation Phantom Fury in November 2004. Using among other things white phosphorus, they destroyed nearly two thirds of the city’s homes, and killed large numbers of people, including children, before announcing that “calm” had been restored. Later, in 2007, they handed over to Iraqi government forces. But this petition, brought to my attention by the Iraq Solidarity Campaign, says Falluja’s suffering has not ended. To: The United Nations. Young women in Fallujah in Iraq are terrified of having children because of the increasing number of babies born grotesquely deformed, with no heads, two heads, a single eye in their foreheads, scaly bodies or missing limbs. In addition, young children in Fallujah are now experiencing hideous cancers and leukaemias.

Challenging the Dahiya Doctrine
By Brenda Heard. Axis of Logic
The tragic tale of the Samouni family of Gaza has become well known. “ We feel [we are] in an exile, even though we are in our homeland, on our land,” says Salah Samouni in a recent Haaretz article. “We sit and envy the dead. They are the ones who are at rest.” The interesting part, though, is not the renewed images of the dead. The interesting part is the backdrop of suggestion: the Samouni family felt that their longstanding, amicable relationship with the Israeli powers would protect them; they were naively mistaken. They were to be victims to the Dahiya Doctrine…

Ahmadinejad blames Pakistan for attack

Meaningful Connections

October 19, 2009 – The truth is that violence visited by adults upon children is an ongoing, underreported epidemic that only seems to draw attention when a celebrity comes forth or the cruel details are too hellacious to ignore. Regular readers will know that I consider this statement to be both accurate and of critical importance. Its significance resides not only in relation to our broad cultural denial of violence and cruelty on a scale and with a frequency that are terrifying in their immensity, but in the horrifying effects of that violence and cruelty on all our lives, and on the lives of millions of innocent people around the world. The effects are seen in our personal relationships, in our work, and in our politics…

The Scandal of Gaza
Patrick Seale
October 19, 2009 – …The assault on Gaza is widely judged to have been a criminal enterprise. But Israel’s cruel siege of Gaza is an equal scandal. This past week, Karen Koning Abuzayd, commissioner-general of UNRWA (the UN Relief and Works for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) was in Paris trying to raise funds for her hard-pressed organisation. To provide health, education and other humanitarian services to some 4.6 million Palestinians refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, UNWRA has a staff of some 27,000 employees, mainly locally recruited teachers and health workers, and a budget of $545 million (in 2008). But, as she explained, UNRWA this year had a $7 million gap in its budget — one week’s salary for its employees — which she was striving to fill. The picture she painted of conditions in Gaza was dismal in the extreme. The situation had not changed since the end of the war…
