NATO troops kill Afghan woman, child in home
Reuters
October 16, 2009 – An Afghan woman and a child were killed in a joint NATO-Afghan attack in Afghanistan on Friday, sparking a protest by a group of angry villagers. Civilian deaths, especially during attacks by U.S.-led NATO forces, have infuriated Afghans and increased hostility towards invasion of foreign troops. The NATO-led force said the woman and a school-aged girl were killed during an attack by foreign and Afghan forces in the southeastern Ghazni province. Reuters television images from the scene showed two bodies including that of a child lying on the floor of a house as a group of Afghans huddled together and cried over the bodies.roup of 100 angry Afghans could be seen later in the day marching through a nearby village shouting “Death to America” and “Death to Hamid Karzai”…

Treatment is sought in U.S. for 3-year-old victim of white phosphorus attack in Gaza
Philip Weiss
October 16, 2009 – The Goldstone report is not an abstraction for me. My delegation was in Gaza at the same time as Judge Richard Goldstone was last June. We saw things that he also saw. I used the word “persecution” at the time; so has he now. One day human-rights-worker Fares Akram brought my group to a house in Beit Lahiya in the north of Gaza. He wanted to show us the hole in the roof made by a white phosphorus shell. It was smaller than a manhole, and throughout the apartment building the walls were still blackened and the studs charred…

Iraqis terrorised by child kidnaps
By Gabriel Gatehouse, BBC
October 16, 2009 – As sectarian violence declines in Iraq and the security situation improves, Iraqis face a new threat to a peaceful life: violent crime. Baghdad has been hit by a spate of kidnappings, mostly targeting children. Police say that, while some gangs are motivated simply by money, they believe insurgent groups are increasingly using criminal activities to finance themselves, as the security forces cut off other lines of funding. The Mousauwi family is in mourning: women crying, dressed from head to toe in black; men – sitting on a row of chairs – hold their heads in their hands. On 30 September, 11-year-old Muntadar was snatched off the streets of Baghdad. The family never saw him alive again…

Officials: Gen. McChrystal Now Seeking 80,000 Additional Troops for Afghanistan
Jason Ditz
October 20, 2009 – When General McChrystal was first reported as requesting 40,000 additional troops for Afghanistan, many people balked at the massive number. Not long after, the number was quietly revised to 45,000. Last Friday it became clear that the general had actually requested over 60,000. Now McClatchy Newspapers is citing officials in the Obama Administration and military as saying that the General’s “low-risk” option was actually even higher, asking for 80,000 additional troops for the war in Afghanistan…

With friends like the US, Pakistan doesn’t need enemies
Simon Tisdall
October 16, 2009 – As the Obama administration dithers over what to do for the best in Afghanistan, neighbouring Pakistan is paying an increasingly heavy price. Like a spate of previous Taliban attacks in recent days, today’s mayhem in Lahore underscored fears that the principal consequence of Washington’s Afghan paralysis, albeit unintended, is the further destabilisation of the Pakistani state. Pakistanis might be forgiven for wondering whether, with friends like these in Washington, who needs enemies?…

Israel rejects UN council backing for Gaza war crimes report
Rory McCarthy in Jerusalem
October 16, 2009 – Israel has angrily rejected what it called a “one-sided” resolution by the UN human rights council today that backed a highly critical report on the Gaza war and opened the way to possible international war crimes investigations. The council voted to endorse the report by a South African judge, Richard Goldstone, which accused both Israel and Hamas of committing war crimes and possible crimes against humanity during the three-week war in Gaza in January. Goldstone, whose work was hailed by leading international human rights groups, found there may be individual criminal responsibility over the killing of civilians…

Afghan Resistance Statement
Reaction of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan to the Biased Resolution of the Security Council, UN
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
October 16, 2009 – The Security Council of the United Nations once again extended the period of stay of the so-called international secularity forces for one more year until next October. The Security Council, UNO, by doing this, has categorically violated its Charter and the Geneva Conventions rules because the United Nations Charter grants to every nation the right to have independence and a government according to their aspirations, whereas the foreign military and political forces in Afghanistan have deprived the Afghans of these natural and legitimate rights… The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan urges all progressive, nationalist, Islamist and anti-colonialist forces to part their ways with the global colonialism and extend their moral support to the sacrificing Mujahideen in Afghanistan because in this current juncture of time of the unipolar world, the current resistance movement in Afghanistan is the only force that constantly add oil to the candle of freedom by shedding their blood and have kept the torch of hope of the oppressed people blazing…

Soldiers at Iraq site asked to get medical exam
Troops at treatment plant potentially exposed to cancer-causing chemical
AP
October 16, 2009 – Six years after nearly 1,200 U.S. soldiers in Iraq were potentially exposed to a sometimes deadly chemical linked to cancer, the military and Veterans Affairs Department have been tracking them down and asking them to get a medical exam. The troops were protecting or in the area of workers hired by a subsidiary of the contractor, KBR Inc., based in Houston, to rebuild the Iraqi water treatment plant Qarmat Ali near Basra, Iraq. The chemical was sodium dichromate, and it had contaminated the area…

Runoff Expected In Afghan Election
Fraud Probe Reduces Karzai’s Share of Vote To About 47 Percent
By Karen DeYoung and Joshua Partlow
October 16, 2009 – An investigation of allegedly fraudulent ballots in Afghanistan’s troubled election has reduced President Hamid Karzai’s portion of the vote to about 47 percent, an outcome that will trigger a runoff between him and his closest competitor, according to officials familiar with results. The tally by the U.N.-backed Electoral Complaints Commission, which one official called “stunning,” is due to be finalized Friday. Preliminary results by Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission had given Karzai 54.6 percent of the Aug. 20 vote…

Olive harvest in Burin continues with more harassment from army and settlers
International Solidarity Movement (ISM)
16 October 2009 – International activists accompanied farmers today to their lands on the edge of the village of Burin, close to an outpost of the illegal settlement of Mar-Bracha, south of Nablus. Farmers enjoyed a quiet two hours of harvesting before eight settlers, one of them armed, appeared on the hill above and began approaching the farmers. The farmers alerted the Palestinian DCO who in turn called the Israeli military. Army jeeps began to arrive and three soldiers came down to meet with the farmers, paying little attention to the four settlers still moving further down the hillside. The soldiers ordered all internationals to leave the area, declaring it a closed military zone, despite having no official proof of the claim. This has become almost a daily problem for farmers and activists working in the Burin area…

Obama’s Peace
By Joseph Massad
October 16, 2009 – … Obama’s continuation of America’s imperial wars and aggressions is proof that if you put an African American in office who is raised “the right way,” he will perform his imperial duties as well as any white president. Obama’s winning the Nobel Peace Prize was therefore a major gain for white liberal Americans who can bask in the sun of their achievement. For after all, producing a few African Americans in the form of Barak Obama can and will silence whoever can still muster the courage to criticize this thoroughly racist system dubbed “American democracy” which continues to victimize most African Americans and much of the Third World…

Binyam Mohamed: Judges overrule attempt to suppress torture evidence
High court orders publication of US report, saying British foreign secretary’s actions were harmful to the rule of law

October 16, 2009 – David Miliband, the foreign secretary, acted in a way that was harmful to the rule of law by suppressing evidence about what the government knew of the illegal treatment of Binyam Mohamed, a British resident who was held in a secret prison in Pakistan, the high court has ruled. Report: Israeli intelligence illegally profiling travelers in South Africa
Sayed Dhansay
October 16, 2009 – Despite our relatively recent struggle against apartheid, I highlighted in a previous article the disturbing level of bilateral trade and cooperation between the South African government and Israel. Bearing our own history in mind, one would expect South Africa to be at the forefront of political efforts to bring Israel in line with international law — and perhaps even be championing economic isolation of Israel — as this was a major factor in ending white minority rule in our country. Unfortunately, however, this appears to not be the case. In the latest example of Israeli entrenchment in South Africa, it has been discovered that Israeli intelligence, or Shin Bet, agents are illegally profiling and detaining South African citizens in Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport…

Israel’s Right or Not to Exist
The Facts and Truth
by Alan Hart
October 16, 2009 – …In the name of pragmatism, willingness to “merely to recognise” Israel – meaning to accept and live in peace with an Israel inside its pre-June ‘67 borders – has long been the formal Palestinian and all-Arab position. Why does it stop short of recognising Israel’s “right to exist”, and why, really, does it matter so much to Zionism that Palestinians recognise this right? The answer is in the following. According to history as written by the winner, Zionism, Israel was given its birth certificate and thus legitimacy by the UN Partition Resolution of 29 November 1947. This is propaganda nonsense…

Hardly any respite
While some calm has returned to the compound of Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Muslim holy site is still under grave threat
Khaled Amayreh
October 16, 2009 – An uneasy calm is descending over East Jerusalem after thousands of Israeli troops lifted a tight siege lasting two weeks on Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, one of Islam’s holiest sanctuaries. The site witnessed violent disturbances two weeks ago when Israeli paramilitary police stormed the Haram Al-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary) in an effort to arrest Palestinians who had repulsed an attempt by a group of Jewish fanatics who were trying to arrogate “prayer rights” at the Islamic shrine. Dozens of Palestinians were injured, some quite seriously…
