STOP THE TRAFFICKING OF IRAQI CHILDREN!
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
October 12, 2009 – J. has just arrived from Baghdad. We spent many hours talking. Too many stories… But the most IMPORTANT one is this : According to official figures for 2009 alone (and God only knows what the unofficial figures are) 270 Iraqi kids reported missing. Missing because they have been KIDNAPPED FOR RANSOMS and parents can't afford to pay. Missing because SOLD. Missing because TRAFFICKED to unknown destinations. Missing because found DEAD, after their ORGANS HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THEIR BODIES. IRAQ NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE 2003…

October Surprise: Peace Prize to a War Criminal
Stephen Lendman
October 12, 2009 – The Nobel Committee's tradition is long and inglorious, but for the well-informed no surprise. Consider its past honorees: — Henry Kissinger; — Shimon Peres; — Yitzhak Rabin; — Menachem Begin; — FW de Klerk; — Al Gore; — The Dalai Lama, a covert CIA asset; — Kofi Annan, a reliable imperial war supporter; — UN Peacekeeping (Paramilitary) Forces that foster more conflicts than they resolve; — Elie Wiesel, a hawkish Islamophobe; — Norman Borlaug, whose “green revolution” wheat strains killed millions; — Medecins Sans Frontieres, co-founded by rabid war hawk Bernard Kouchner, now France's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs; — Woodrow Wilson who broke his pledge to keep “us out of war,” — Jimmy Carter who backed an array of tyrants and drew the Soviets into its Afghan quagmire that took a million or more lives; — George C. Marshall, instrumental in creating NATO and waging war against North Korea; — Theodore Roosevelt who once said “I should welcome almost any war, for I think this country needs one;” and — other undeserving winners…”War is peace,” what Orwell understood and why the award legitimizes wars and the leaders who wage them…

Report: Israeli police unit disguised as medics
Ma'an News
October 12, 2009 – While Israel often accuses Palestinians of misusing ambulances as cover for attacks, a report from the country's second-largest newspaper suggests Israel may want to first clean up its own house before accusing others. In its special magazine supplement, the Hebrew-language daily Ma'ariv exposed an undercover unit created by Israeli police that disguises its operatives as medics, Bedouins, ultra-Orthodox Jews, or even Israeli civilians faking car trouble. According to the report, the special unit is responsible for targeting Palestinians listed on Israel's long “wanted” list…

Video: US ammunition blamed for Iraqi cancer hike –
Aljazeera.net
October 12, 2009 – Doctors in Iraq are recording a shocking rise in the number of cancer victims south of Baghdad. Sufferers in the province of Babil have risen by almost tenfold in just three years. Locals blame depleted uranium from US military equipment used in the 2003 invasion. In this part of Iraq 500 cases of cancer were diagnosed in 2004. That figure rose to almost 1,000 two years later. In 2008, the number of cases increased sevenfold to 7,000 diagnoses. This year, there have so far been more than 9,000 new cases … and the number is rising…

Why Does Obama Get a Prize and Bush Got Shoes?
IYAD BURNAT
October 12, 2009 – When I came home from our nonviolent demonstration in Bil'in, after the soldiers shot tear gas and after seeing the violence of the Israeli soldiers, I heard that President Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize. When I heard this from the media I started to go crazy. I asked myself why. The Americans are still in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Palestine is still occupied. In the recent news I saw that the Israeli soldiers closed Jerusalem, and I heard that many people were injured. We haven't seen anything changed. Why didn't the committee give the prize to Bush? I remember nine years ago Bush had a good speech about the establishment of a Palestinian state in the year of 2005. We saw after the speech that Sharon invaded Al Aqsa mosque, and the American army invaded Iraq. Why didn't you give the prize to this man at that time, and he got shoes instead? This is injustice! I am so sorry Mr. Bush. You worked very hard, eight years with killing children, starting wars and supporting the occupation, and they gave the prize to another man…

Millions will starve as rich nations cut food aid funding, warns UN
John Vidal, in Bangkok
October 12, 2009 – Tens of millions of the world's poor will have their food rations cut or cancelled in the next few weeks because rich countries have slashed aid funding. The result, says Josette Sheeran, head of the UN's World Food Programme (WFP), could be the “loss of a generation” of children to malnutrition, food riots and political destabilisation. “We are facing a silent tsunami,” said Sheeran in an exclusive interview with the Observer. “A humanitarian disaster is unrolling.” The WFP feeds nearly 100 million people a year…

At What Cost the Israel Lobby?
Jeff Gates
October 12, 2009 – More than 46 years ago, President John F. Kennedy sought to preclude a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. In June 1963, he wrote the last in a series of insistent letters to Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. Those letters sought what Israel now demands of Iran: international inspections of its nuclear facilities. The key difference: Kennedy knew for certain that Israel, while portraying itself a friend and ally, repeatedly lied to Kennedy about its nuclear weapons development at the Dimona reactor in the Negev Desert. Best estimates point to sometime between 1962 and 1964 when Israel produced its first weapon in what is now a vast nuclear arsenal estimated at 200-400 warheads…

Rift Developing Between PA and Fatah
By Mel Frykberg
October 12, 2009 -An increasingly isolated and unpopular Palestinian Authority (PA) has again made a 180-degree turn in the Goldstone report fiasco as it tries to fend off mounting criticism from all and sundry, including its own organisation. On Sunday Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas did a complete about-face over UN-appointed Justice Richard Goldstone's controversial report on war crimes in Gaza, the bulk of it focusing on Israeli atrocities. “I instructed the PA envoy in Geneva to call for another exceptional meeting of the Human Rights Council to vote on the report, seeking to punish all who committed the most grotesque crimes against women and children in Gaza,” Abbas said…

A Letter From Afghanistan: Bagram, Afghan suffering and the futility of war
Andy Worthington
October 12, 2009 – Last year, I received one of those special emails out of the blue, from someone wise and compassionate, who, to my great delight, wished to thank me for the courage of my writing. This woman, who has worked in rural development and post-disaster rehabilitation for 20 years, mostly in Africa, has spent the last few years in Afghanistan, and last week I unexpectedly received the following letter by email, which was so perceptive and so informative that I asked for her permission to reproduce it here, and was delighted when she said yes…

LEBANON: Nahr el Bared residents, supporters rally ahead of key ruling on reconstruction
Meris Lutz in Beirut
October 12, 2009 – Palestine house Several hundred people rallied in downtown Beirut on Monday in a show of solidarity with the displaced residents of Nahr el Bared, the Palestinian refugee camp that was destroyed in spring 2007 when fighting broke out between Fatah Al-Islam militants and the Lebanese Army. The demonstration was staged days before a key court ruling that could put a halt to reconstruction, leaving some 30,000 people in temporary UN housing or squeezed into the outskirts of the camp indefinitely…

Israel: Stop Blocking School Supplies From Entering Gaza
Blockade Deprives Students of Paper, Pens, Textbooks
Human Rights Watch
October 12, 2009 – Israeli authorities should immediately lift restrictions that have left students in Gaza's public schools without textbooks and the most basic school supplies, such as notebooks and pens, Human Rights Watch said today. Israel severely limits imports into Gaza of a wide variety of basic goods, from food to construction materials. More than a month into the school year, the Israeli restrictions have caused severe shortages that leave students unable to afford supplies such as notebooks…

Obama continues assault on democratic rights
Tom Eley and Barry Grey
October 12, 2009 – Actions taken by President Barack Obama over the past month have confirmed that he is every bit as committed as his predecessor, George W. Bush, to the expansion of the police powers of the state. Last week, Obama moved to significantly weaken a “media shield” bill advancing through Congress that would give new protection to government whistle-blowers and journalists in cases involving sources who speak with reporters on condition of anonymity. It marked yet another volte-face for Obama, who as a senator championed a similar measure…

The Toxic Legacy of Christopher Columbus
By William A. Cook
October 12, 2009 – …What differentiates the slaughter of the natives by bloody massacres that wiped out whole tribes, as the Conquistadores swept across the south west or the Puritan massacre of the Pequots, in the fiery hell they designed for those God helped them destroy, from the razing of Fallujah by the American forces as they leveled the city to the ground and in the process scorched and seared the residents in the unforgiving fire of white phosphorus? What has changed since Medieval times? What progress is discernible but the technology of death? The racist mindset clamped on the brain by arrogance of belief in white superiority remains firmly in place justifying what the soul knows in its silence to be merciless slaughter that needs no God to trumpet its evil…

Is Canada more pro-Israel than the US?
Yves Engler
October 12, 2009 – In June, Israel began barring some North Americans with Palestinian-sounding names entry through Ben Gurion Airport. Forced to reroute through a land-border crossing that connects the West Bank with Jordan, their passports were stamped “Palestinian Authority only,” which prevents them from entering Israel proper. The Obama Administration objected to the move by Israel that discriminates against American citizens of Palestinian origin. However, there has been no protest from Ottawa even though Time magazine and the Israeli daily Haaretz ran lengthy articles focusing on Palestinian Canadian businessmen harmed by this new policy. A few weeks ago the Globe and Mail reported that “Although some of the most high-profile cases of individuals being turned away involve Canadian citizens, the Harper government has, so far, made no protest.”…

Dianne Feinstein: War Profiteer
Why a San Francisco Democrat is one of the biggest warmongers around
Justin Raimondo
October 12, 2009 – President Barack Obama barely had time to graciously note his unworthiness of the Nobel Peace Prize before it was time to duck back into the Situation Room for a meeting with his advisers about how to win the war in Afghanistan. The irony of this is underscored by the apparent willingness of the administration to consider the addition of as many as 60,000 more troops, per Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s request, to the occupation forces. The Taliban has regrouped and is in clear control of much of the country. Not only that, but the Afghan “government,” which was never very credible to begin with, has lost any vestige of legitimacy it may once have possessed on account of the brazen theft of the presidential election by fashion plate Hamid Karzai. Not that this matters much in concrete terms, as Karzai’s kingdom is limited to Kabul and the immediate vicinity…

The travails of the Palestinian Authority while Palestine vanishes
by Sonja Karkar
October 12, 2009 – The fallout from the Palestinian Authority’s refusal to endorse the Goldstone Report’s passage through the United Nations is not just painful for the Palestinians, but also for all those who support the Palestinian cause. This is yet another wound inflicted by the Authority on the Palestinian struggle for liberation from a long and brutal Israeli military occupation. And yet again, Israel gets a “get out of jail free” card as the Palestinians are forced to focus on their own inept and corrupt leadership. The world was poised to call Israel to account for its war crimes in Gaza post-Christmas 2008. The Goldstone Report meticulously documents the evidence made all the more credible because its investigations were led by a distinguished Jewish South African judge with strong loyalties to Israel…

Battening Down the Hatches: Secret State Monitors Protest, Represses Dissent
Tom Burghardt
October 12, 2009 – As social networking becomes a dominant feature of daily life, the secret state is increasingly surveilling electronic media for what it euphemistically calls “actionable intelligence.” Take the case of Elliot Madison. The 41-year-old anarchist was arrested in Pittsburgh September 24 at the height of G20 protests. Madison, a social worker and volunteer with The People's Law Collective in New York City, was busted by a combined task force led by the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) and Pittsburgh's “finest.” The activist was charged with “hindering apprehension or prosecution, criminal use of a communication facility and possession of instruments of crime,” according to The New York Times…

Mishaal: Ramallah authority no longer eligible to lead the Palestinian people
Palestinian Information Center
October 12, 2009 — Khaled Mishaal, the political bureau chairman of Hamas, has accused the Ramallah authority led by Mahmoud Abbas of lying and of not being fit to rule the Palestinian people. Mishaal, addressing the concluding session of the international Golan forum attended by 1,428 delegates from 55 countries on Sunday evening, said that all those responsible for delaying the voting on Goldstone report should be brought to account…

Palestinian unity hopes dim
Aljazeera.net
October 12, 2009 – A reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas, the rival Palestinian parties, has been delayed, following a bitter dispute over the Palestinian decision not to back a UN report on alleged Israeli war crimes. The deal was to be signed on October 25, clearing the way for Hamas and Fatah to co-operate in rebuilding war-damaged Gaza by preparing for Palestinian elections in the first half of 2010…

Military Resistance [GiSp] 7J7: Herman Munster – October 11, 2009
Thomas F. Barton
Iraqi politicians say they have put aside for the time being any plans to push for a referendum on the U.S.-Iraqi security pact governing the American troop pullout here. The threat of a referendum had clouded U.S. withdrawal plans. If Iraqi voters were given a chance to vote on the deal some U.S. officials feared they would reject it, forcing an accelerated U.S. withdrawal. The security pact calls for all American troops to be out of Iraq by the end of 2011. When the security treaty was approved, Sunni lawmakers insisted on a referendum as a condition of their support. Originally scheduled for last July, it was delayed. Many observers suspected it might never happen.

Scores die in Pakistan convoy blast
Aljazeera.net
October 12, 2009 – More than 40 people have been killed and dozens more wounded in an attack on the Pakistani military. The suicide bombing, which struck a convoy, was in Alpurai, Shangla, a district used as a transit route and which borders the Swat valley in the North-West Frontier Province. Major Mushtaq Khan, a spokesman at the military-run Swat Media Centre, said at least four security personnel had been killed and several more injured in Monday's attack…
