Where are OUR Human Rights? Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues October 9, 2009 –
…That is why every time I hear one of you bastards speak of Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights, I am taken by this urge to spit on your collective faces. I am still shocked by the extent of your Immorality and lack of Conscience. I am still shocked by your lies, I am still shocked by how deceitful you are. You and your governments have put the most reactionary, sectarian, tyrannical, corrupt government in place in Iraq and you still have the audacity to come and talk of good will, peace and human rights ! You and your governments have stripped Afghans of anything called a basic right, pushed them into the deepest abyss of poverty, neglect, abandonment, bombed the shit out of an already poor country, made thousands destitute and killed thousands and trafficked some of them and you still have the fucking audacity to come and talk of good will, peace and human rights !…

Nobel Committee: War is Peace Mr. Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting just about everything but peace. Little Alex October 9, 2009 –
…In the two wars Mr. Obama has been leading in 2009, 886 civilians were killed in Afghanistan from February to July [.pdf] and 2,629 in Iraq from February to August, Brian Doherty posted at the Reason blog. (h/t: Angela Keaton) “The Nobel prize for peace? Obama should have won the 'Nobel Prize for escalating violence and killing civilians’,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters–posing as Mr. Pot to the kettle president… As for the Orwellian-named “peace process” in Palestine-Israel, Mr. Obama has done nothing but enable Israel’s massacre on Gaza earlier this year and expanded colonization of the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Mr. Obama’s rhetoric has been nothing different from that of his predecessor, George W. Bush and has not threatened to cut military welfare from the U.S. to Israel–on which Israel is dependent to perform its atrocities…

Abbas must go By Khalid Amayreh October 9, 2009 –
… I strongly believe that Abbas must take the right decision and retire for good. That would be a dignified step that would spare him further indignity and dishonor. The Palestinian people are too tired and too exhausted to fight on two battles, the main battle with the Zionist beast which is trying to arrogate our land and ruin our present and future, and a secondary battle of preserving our just cause from the betrayal of narcissistic and self-absorbed “leaders” who think that complacency and capitulation are the best policy. Finally, Fatah should draw the right conclusion from this sorry episode. After all, one doesn’t have to be a great public relations expert to realize that the continued existence of this man at the helm of Fatah will prove to be disastrous. But the issue is more than just public relations. The issue is Palestine itself. The people just won’t forgive you, and Abbas is no Yasser Arafat…

Sweatshop Conditions in US Cities Stephen Lendman October 9, 2009 –
A new low-wage industry study [Broken Laws, Unprotected Workers. Violations of Employment and Labor Laws in America's Cities] by the Center for Urban Economic Development, the National Employment Law Project, and the UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment exposes the dark side of workforce exploitation in America's three largest cities – New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. From January through August 2008, researchers conducted 90-minute interviews with 4,387 “front-line” workers, aged 18 or older, using “innovative, rigorous methodology” to reach vulnerable people “often missed in standard surveys, such as (undocumented) immigrants and those paid in cash.” The goal was to be as statistically representative of workplace violations as possible for a population of about 1.64 million workers, or 15% of the total workforce studied…

Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize Thomas DiLorenzo So Obama joins Woodrow Wilson in the pantheon of American presidents who have won the Nobel Peace Prize (Wilson won it in 1919). I learned this morning that nominations for the prize had to be in by Feb. 20, about one month after Obama was inaugurated. That means that the prize went for his rhetoric during the campaign, not anything he could have actually accomplished. As I recall, his two most memorable foreign policy pronouncements during the campaign were 1) advocating that the U.S. bomb Pakistan; and 2) escalating the war in Afghanistan. He did order the murder of some people in Pakistan by bombardment shortly after taking office…

US: Taliban has grown fourfold Aljazeera.net October 9, 2009 –
Taliban-led forces fighting US and Nato troops in Afghanistan have increased nearly fourfold since 2006, according to a US intelligence estimate presented to the US president. The report says that the number of Taliban fighters has grown to 25,000, from 7,000 four years ago, the officials said on Friday as Barack Obama convened a fifth cabinet-level meeting on his country's military strategy in Afghanistan. The US president is considering whether to agree to a request by the senior commander of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan for up to 40,000 extra troops to be deployed…

Obama needs to end world injustice – Iran AFP October 9, 2009 –
THE Nobel Peace Prize awarded to US President Barack Obama should prompt him to start working towards ending injustice in the world, an aide to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says. “We hope that this gives him the incentive to walk in the path of bringing justice to the world order,” said Ali Akbar Javanfekr, Mr Ahmadinejad's media aide. “We are not upset and we hope that by receiving this prize he will start taking practical steps to remove injustice in the world.” “If he removes the veto from the United Nations Security Council, then it shows the prize was given correctly to him,” Mr Javanfekr said…

Iraq snapshot – October 9, 2009 The Common Ills October 9, 2009.
Chaos and violence continue, news of the US continuing the Iraq War on into 2012, the war against women continues and Sahar Issa documents it, where is the 'progress,' the US fails to meet the admission numbers for Iraqi refugees predicted in August by the State Dept, the US Army releases suicide data, and more. Let's deal with realities and the first that the Iraq War has no end-date at present. Despite spin and lies and assertions, there is no end-date. In fact, if the SOFA truly eneded the Iraq War — as the popular narrative and press fools claim — then Bush couldn't have skipped the Congress. There would be no debating that it was a treaty if ended a war. That's what treaties historically have done. But let's deal in what is known…

Embarrassed and denounced Khaled Amayreh October 9, 2009 –
The Palestinian Authority (PA) is facing an extremely embarrassing situation following its decision earlier this week to endorse deferring the ratification of the Goldstone Report at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva. The report, compiled by South African judge Richard Goldstone, accused Israel of committing, knowingly and deliberately, war crimes and crimes against humanity during its winter onslaught on the Gaza Strip in which more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed, most of whom were innocent civilians, including more than 300 children, with thousands others injured or badly incinerated by phosphoric bombs. Thousands of homes, mosques and public buildings were destroyed in the 22-day blitz…

Military and Intelligence Demo in Support of Abbas Kawther Salam October 9, 2009 –
Have you ever heard in the past, present, or from the old ages, that the MIDEAST-PALESTINIAN-POLITICS-FATAH-DEMOmilitary, security, police, intelligence systems, ministers and government employees in a country anywhere, USA, United Kingdom, Europe, China, Japan or even in the Hololo Islands, had gone to the streets to demonstrate in support of their President so that the crimes of their so-called President could be covered up better? This happened yesterday Oct. 8 2009, in a small ghetto in the occupied Palestinian territories in a city called Ramallah…

Pentagon extends Army, Marine deployments in Iraq Katherine McIntire Peters October 9, 2009 –
Defense Secretary Robert Gates this week approved a request from U.S. combat commanders in Iraq to extend the deployment of some troops serving there by as much as two and a half months. The extensions are intended to ensure that key capabilities remain in place after the January elections in Iraq. The units affected include the Army's 1st Cavalry Division headquarters and the II Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Texas and North Carolina, respectively. The tours of duty could be extended for an additional 23 days for the Army and 79 days for Marines…

Abbas's Loss is Palestinians' Gain By Sherri Muzher October 9, 2009 –
There is a famous Arabic expression: 'he who doesn't respect himself shall not be respected. Apparently, Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas doesn't believe in this. At least, he didn't until now. The decision to defer the Goldstone Report, the UN report alleging that both Israel and Hamas had committed war crimes during Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip last winter, was nothing short of betrayal. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Richard Falk even described the decision as “perverse.” 'The Palestinians have betrayed their own people,' Falk said. 'This was a moment finally when the international community endorsed the allegations of war crimes and it would have been an opportunity to vindicate the struggle of the Palestinian people for their rights under international law.'

Where Truth is the Target Eight Years of Big Lies on Afghanistan By JAMES BOVARD October 9, 2009 –
It seems like only yesterday that President George W. Bush was bragging about having given “freedom and democracy” to 25 million Afghans. This was a key theme of his second inaugural address, and it helped Bush preen as the conqueror of the world. For 8 years, the American people have been fed one big lie after another regarding Afghanistan. Now, when the Pentagon is saber-rattling to vastly increase the number of U.S. troops sent there, a refresher course on the Biggest Lies is in order…

Video: Bilin Weekly Demo 09.10.2009 yisraelpnm October 9, 2009 –
Prevented from picking their olives, Palestinians resorted to a different sort of harvest this afternoon. International, Israeli and Palestinian activists once again gathered in Bilin to demonstrate against the Apartheid Wall. Peaceful chants and calls for peace were met with rounds of tear gas. A large French delegation came to show their solidarity with the Palestinians against the illegal occupation and theft of their land. Palestinians distributed sacks for olive-picking and when they were refused entry into their land, they resorted to picking up the dozens of tear gas canisters that littered their land. At the end of the demonstration, activists emptied their sacks into one big pile. Instead of fresh green olives, a symbol of Palestinian livelihood, there was one large pile of countless tear gas grenades, a symbol of occupation…
