Taliban Say Control Area After Battle With U.S.
Reuters
October 7, 2009 – Taliban militants said on Wednesday they had hoisted their flag in a remote district of Afghanistan where days earlier they had inflicted the deadliest battlefield casualties on U.S. troops in more than a year. In a separate statement marking the eighth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan that led to their overthrow as the country’s rulers, the Taliban said they posed no threat to the West but would continue their fight against foreign forces as long as such troops remained in the country…

Poll: Wide Majority of Hondurans Oppose Coup d’Etat, Want Zelaya Back
AL GIORDANO
October 7, 2009 – Finally, hard and reliable data – by a legally certified Honduran polling company – provides a clear measurement of how the Honduran people view the June 28 coup d’etat, its “president” Roberto Micheletti, President Manuel Zelaya and the national civil resistance. The polling data – which we make public for the first time here – shows that Hondurans widely (by a margin of 3 to 1) oppose the coup, oppose coup “president” Micheletti by a margin of 3 to 1 and favor the reinstatement of their elected President Manuel Zelaya by a clear majority of 3 to 2…

Honduras – 100 Days of Repression and Resistance
Tom Loudon
Octiber 7, 2009 – Today marks 100 days since a military coup was carried out against President Zelaya in Honduras. It also marks 100 days of massive, sustained, nonviolent resistance on the part of the Honduran people who are saying no to this brazen attempt to return to the days of dictators. In the face of uncontainable resistance, the coup regime has employed increasingly draconian measures. Most disturbing includes a resurgence of death squad activity, wholesale suspension of constitutional rights and the criminalization of social protest..

New Report Reveals Settlement Construction Work In Development
Palestine Monitor
October 7, 2009 – According to ‘Peace Now’, one of Israel’s largest NGO’s, constructions has begun in 34 settlements over the last 3 months. Its thought that negotiations for a settlement freeze will only apply to new construction projects and building work that has already begun will be considered ‘facts on the ground’. This clause would exempt 2,400 units currently in various stages of construction. According to the Peace Now report “The settlers are working fast to produce as many construction starts as possible so that these new housing units will be counted as existing settlements and not included in any future agreed upon freeze.” Approval is not needed from the Ministry of Defence for infrastructure work on new settlements to commence allowing work to begin under the radar…

Abbas Gets The Shoe Treatment
Irish4Palestine
October 7, 2009 – …On Wednesday, Gaza professors threw shoes at his defaced image and West Bank commentators called for his resignation, the latest signs Abbas may have miscalculated in bowing to what Palestinian officials say was intense U.S. pressure. Abbas is unlikely to be forced out of office because he enjoys strong Western support (He’s an agent for the West and Israel!) and has ruled the West Bank without challenge since his Hamas rivals drove him out of Gaza in 2007…

The same war hysteria
The Nation, Pakistan –
October 7, 2009 – PRESIDENT Barack Obama’s remark on a recent visit to the National Counter-terrorism Centre (NCTC) in Virginia that he could not rule out Al-Qaeda attacking the US in the future recalls the same war hysteria that his predecessor George W. Bush created and kept trumpeting during his two dismal tenures. Bush had the embarrassment of seeing his policies end in utter failure and give rise to worldwide hatred of his country. One would hope that Obama restrains himself from following this course if he wants to make sure that he does not meet a similar fate. His motive in raising the scare of an attack is obviously no different from Bush’s: to regain domestic support for an increasingly unpopular war (this time in Afghanistan) by instilling fear in the minds of American citizens that abandoning it or planning an exit at this stage carries a serious security risk for them…

Deconstructing the Israeli Narrative
By Dan Lieberman
October 7, 2009 – As Israel’s democratic posture becomes more questioned, its mystique becomes more exaggerated. To prove the validity of its actions, Israel’s supporters focus on three components of Israel’s drive to an accomplished nation: The significance of the Zionist mission, Israel as a Jewish state, and Israel not being responsible for the Palestinian displaced persons. All of these issues, which had roles in establishing the Israel state, are expressed with sweeping generalities, devoid of specifics and facts. Obfuscation, lack of clarity and an assumption that what is being related is correct often characterize discussions of these issues. No questions asked and nothing to explain…

Revolutionary Guards buy 51% stake in Iran’s telecommunications company
Robert Tait
October 7, 2009 – Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have bought a controlling stake in the country’s telecommunications company, fuelling suspicions that the organisation is quietly staging a military takeover. Tose’e Etemad Mobin, a consortium controlled by the guards, paid £5bn for a 51% stake under a privatisation scheme. It was claimed that a rival enterprise had been unfairly excluded from the bidding process because it lacked appropriate “security qualifications”…

Congress moving to block release of torture photos: ACLU
Daniel Tencer
October 7, 2009 – A little-noticed provision in a homeland security funding bill could end efforts to make public photos of prisoners abused in US custody abroad, the American Civil Liberties Union stated on Wednesday. Members of the House and Senate have added a provision proposed by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) to the funding bill that would make such photos exempt from the Freedom of Information Act, meaning that, if the law is upheld, the Pentagon could continue to suppress the photos, the ACLU said…

Iraq’s LGBT community still under assault
The Common Ills
October 7, 2009 – …CONAN: One of the creepiest thing you described is, in fact, this man Nuri and others being tortured for information for names of other gay men who presumably would then suffer the same fate. Mr. McALLESTER: Yes. And supposedly, there were – many of the people, many of the gay Iraqis said there were lists. I mean, they were actually stopped at Mahdi Army —apparently, Mahdi Army roadblocks. And they had lists in their hands, these militia members, of gay men. And they had compiled these lists, essentially, through — the first thing they would do when they captured a gay man would be to torture him for every name that he would give. And many of the names came through cell phones. So they would take the cell phone of the man that they had taken and then say, you know, who is this person? Who is that person? Or they would call that person, and — and then there were other ways of doing it. There’s a very popular gay personal site called manjam.com and, indeed, some of the Mahdi Army people or militia members were posing as gay men and entrapping, you know, the genuinely gay men that way…

Leaked Iran Paper Based on Intel that Split IAEA
Analysis by Gareth Porter*
October 7, 2009 – Excerpts of the internal draft report by the staff of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) published online last week show that the report’s claims about Iranian work on a nuclear weapon is based almost entirely on intelligence documents which have provoked a serious conflict within the agency. Contrary to sensational stories by the Associated Press and The New York Times, the excerpts on the website of the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) reveal that the IAEA’s Safeguards Department, which wrote the report, only has suspicions – not real evidence – that Iran has been working on nuclear weapons in recent years.

Concerns over olive harvest increase for families under threat of settlers

October 7, 2009 – Amin Abu Wardeh for PNN – With the onset of olive harvest coinciding with the rise in attacks by settlers, rural Palestinian families have an even more difficult time. They are preparing their work supplies, equipment and storage for the impending season. The Gaza War’s Effect on Women
Stephen Lendman
October 7, 2009 – The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights’ (PCHR) new report, titled “Through Women’s Eyes,” highlights “the Gender-Specific Impact and Consequences of Operation Cast Lead” and the ongoing siege, including 12 case study examples “through the victims’ words.” Several are discussed below. In patriarchal Palestinian society, women traditionally are caregivers while men typically head households and are the main breadwinners. As a result, when widows are thrust into this role, they’re often victimized by cultural, social and economic discrimination and marginalization. In Gaza today, it’s hard for women to get by alone, so widows must either live with family members or remarry. The alternative is a hard struggle alone, something most Palestinian women try to avoid, but post-conflict many have no choice…

Eight years after invasion
Washington faces deepening debacle in Afghanistan
Bill Van Auken
October 7, 2009 – Today marks eight years since the launching of the US war against Afghanistan. The aerial bombardment of Kabul, Kandahar and Jalalabad was followed by the deployment of CIA and military special forces units which directed US warplanes in the annihilation of Taliban fighters. The militias of the Northern Alliance—a collection of warlords tied to the opium trade and implicated in war crimes over the previous decade—served as Washington’s proxy army. Within two months, all of Afghanistan’s provinces had fallen to the US intervention, with large numbers of the Taliban resistance taken prisoner and massacred and others driven into the Tora Bora mountains or across the border into Pakistan. In those two months, a total of 12 US soldiers were killed…

A War of Absurdity
By Robert Scheer
October 7, 2009 – Every once in a while, a statistic just jumps out at you in a way that makes everything else you hear on a subject seem beside the point, if not downright absurd. That was my reaction to the recent statement of the president’s national security adviser, former Marine Gen. James Jones, concerning the size of the terrorist threat from Afghanistan: “The al-Qaida presence is very diminished. The maximum estimate is less than 100 operating in the country, no bases, no ability to launch attacks on either us or our allies.” Less than 100! And he is basing his conservative estimate on the best intelligence data available to our government. That means that al-Qaida, for all practical purposes, does not exist in Afghanistan..

Afghan Resistance Statement
Statement of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan on the occasion of the Eighth Anniversary of the American Attack on Afghanistan.
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
October 7, 2009 – We believed from the day one, that this is not a war between democracy and the so- called terrorism but rather a war between the western colonialism and the freedom-loving nationalist and Islamist forces. In this unequal war, the one side have before them expansionism, colonialism and exploitation as their plans of objectives which they want to achieve by dent of military power through brutality and atrocities. On the other hand, the other side of the war have their objective of independence, Islamic social justice, human dignity and national identity which they want to achieve through sacrifices and the shedding of their pure blood. We believe in this war between truth and evil, the truth will surely prevail. We call on the American rulers and their allies of the coalition once again to put an end to the game of occupying Afghanistan and killing the Afghans under unsubstantiated pretexts…

Afghan Taliban say they pose no threat to the West
By Sayed Salahuddin, Reuters
October 7, 2009 – The Afghan Taliban pose no threat to the West but will continue their fight against occupying foreign forces, they said on Wednesday, the eighth anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion that removed them from power. U.S.-led forces with the help of Afghan groups overthrew the Taliban government during a five week battle which started on October 7, 2001, after the militants refused to hand over al Qaeda leaders wanted by Washington for the September 11 attacks on America. “We had and have no plan of harming countries of the world, including those in Europe … our goal is the independence of the country and the building of an Islamic state”…

Europe is under imminent threat
The NATO First Act of the United States

October 7, 2009 – The spectacular carnage and destruction of Iraq and Afghanistan have distracted our attention from the big picture, of which these appear to be a relatively small part. Sometimes we have to adopt a new view of our world and this is one of those times. Because of the secrecy, propaganda and lies that now characterize our governments it is necessary to work backwards from their actions in the public domain to determine the truth. I wish to offer three data points that fit into the trend of the USA’s undisguised primary objective – to be the dominant military power in the world. This was reiterated by President Barack Obama at Annapolis Naval Academy…

Israel’s War Crimes: Beyond Reasonable Doubt
Anand Sagar
October 7, 2009 – There is enough documented and corroborative evidence available to establish that the brutal, three-week, Israeli assault against Gaza last winter was clearly a gross violation of international law and thus tantamount to both—a war crime and/or a crime against humanity. At least that is one inevitable interpretation of Richard Goldstone’s inquiry into the Gaza Conflict on behalf of the UN’s Human Rights Council. Of course, the 575-page report, based on an examination of 36 specific attacks in Gaza as well as in the West Bank and in Israel, does mention that there were “atrocities” committed by both sides…

October 7, 2009 – Richard Falk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that that the Palestinian authority (PA) in Ramallah betrayed its own people at a moment when the international community was so close to endorse Goldstone’s report accusing Israel of war crimes in the Gaza Strip. “The Palestinians have betrayed their people, this was a moment when finally the international community indorsed the allegations of war crimes and it would have been an opportunity to vindicate the struggle of the Palestinian people for their rights under international law and for the Palestinian representatives in the UN themselves to seem to undermine this report is an astonishing development,” he told al-Jazeera…

Factsheet of Human Development Report 2009: Afghanistan ranked 181 out of 182 countries
UNDP
October 6, 2009 – Each year since 1990 the Human Development Report has published the human development index (HDI) which looks beyond GDP to a broader definition of well-being. The HDI provides a composite measure of three dimensions of human development: living a long and healthy life (measured by life expectancy), being educated (measured by adult literacy and gross enrolment in education) and having a decent standard of living (measured by purchasing power parity, PPP, income). The index is not in any sense a comprehensive measure of human development. It does not, for example, include important indicators such as gender or income inequality nor more difficult to measure concepts like respect for human rights and political freedoms. What it does provide is a broadened prism for viewing human progress and the complex relationship between income and well-being…

A poverty of leadership

October 7, 2009 – A firestorm of criticism has erupted since Friday’s “postponement” of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC) vote on the Goldstone report, which accused Israel of committing war crimes during its winter invasion of the Gaza Strip. The postponement was at the behest of the Ramallah Palestinian Authority’s (PA) ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Ibrahim Khraishi. Palestinians globally and across the political spectrum have rightfully been outraged at what is not only an unbelievable act of cowardice and ineptitude, but a betrayal of the highest order. Indeed, anywhere else in the world it would be considered tantamount to treason. Sadly and unsurprisingly, it is what passes for leadership from Mahmoud Abbas…
