Former German premier Schroeder says Nabucco needs Iranian gas
Lucas Wolf, DPA
September 26, 2009 – German ex-chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said the EU’s planned Nabucco pipeline, which would sidestep Russian territory and supplies, will have to rely on Iranian gas, according to Russian news agencies Friday. At an energy conference in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana, Schroeder said that existing arrangements would only provide enough gas for the Nord Stream and South Stream pipeline projects, both rivals to Nabucco. Plans for all three projects were justified because Europe needed more and more gas, he said. But the EU must overcome its political differences with Iran in order to secure an agreement over gas deliveries from the Caspian Sea, he added…

Comrade Mizher: Occupation killings require a unified resistance response
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine -PFLP
September 26, 2009 – Comrade Jamil Mizher denounced the Zionist occupation’s criminal assassination of three Palestinian resistance fighters from Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, on September 26, 2009, calling for all factions to form a unified resistance front that can act together to resist the occupier. The three martyrs, Kamel Al-Dahduh, Mahmoud Al-Banna and Muhammad Marshoud, were targeted by the occupation military, who bombed their car east of Gaza City with warplanes, on Friday night, September 25, 2009. Their funeral, attended by thousands of marchers, was targeted once more for attacks by the occupation military – 12 were injured when Israeli military towers opened fire on the funeral procession…

Drones, deaths and don’t waste my time
The Common Ills
September 26, 2009 – ….The Iraq War continues. It hasn’t ended. I’m not interested in all the pathetic little s**ts who can’t stay focused long enough to end a war. You send me that garbage again and I’m going to stop opening your e-mails. I’m not interested in it. I’m not interested in promoting the LIE that the Iraq War has ended. A lot of do-nothings who attempt to pose as do-gooders want to rush off to protest the Afghanistan War. They think it’s the ‘hot’ protest. I’m not interested. This site follows the Iraq War which has not ended. I have no damn desire to promote your activies or you. If fact your so damn pathetic that you should come with a warning label notifying people that you’re not about ending any war, you’re just about getting yourself some publicity for a few days….In the last entry, we noted Russ Feingold and John Kerry proposing to end the Iraq War in one year and less than a month. That was in 2007 (proposed in June 2006, ending in July 2007). Thanks to bulls**ters and liars and whores, we’re not seeing an end to the Iraq War. The end of 2011 will not see the Iraq War ended. That’s the lie though. And worthless pieces of s**t pretend it’s the end and pretend like, in 2009, ending the war by the start of 2012 is acceptable…

Military Resistance [GISP] 7I11: Censoring Helmand.doc [ 26 September 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
The surprise discontinuation of my embedment from the British Army left my schedule in a train wreck. Until that decisive moment, I am told, that my embed with the British Army had lasted longer than anyone else’s; other than Ross Kemp’s. I’ve also been told that I’ve spent more time with the British Army in Iraq than any correspondent. So it’s fair to say, we have good history together. In the last 12 months, I’ve embedded with the British Army in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, then over to the jungles of Brunei to attend a man-tracking school, and again back in Afghanistan. During that time, I’ve also been with U.S. forces in Iraq, the Philippines, and Afghanistan.

Obama comes to aid of Israel over UN war crimes charges
By Jean Shaoul
September 26, 2009 – An authoritative and highly critical United Nations inquiry released last week concluded that Israel “committed actions amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity” during its three-week offensive against Gaza in December last year. The report is one of the most damning ever made of Israel’s government and armed forces. Whereas in 1982, Israel betrayed its duty to protect the Palestinian refugees in Sabra and Shatilla in Beirut and was indirectly responsible for the massacre of more than 800 people by its Phalange allies, this time Israel was the direct perpetrator of war crimes…

McChrystal: Things getting worse in Afghanistan
Brett Michael Dykes
September 26, 2009 – Amid concerns that he might resign over a rift between the military leadership in Afghanistan and the civilian leadership in the Obama White House, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, America’s top commander in Afghanistan, sat down for an interview with David Martin of 60 Minutes, airing Sunday. The moment making headlines in advance clips comes when Martin pointedly asks, “Are things worse, or better?” McChrystal replies, “They’re probably a little worse … in some areas … the breadth of the violence, the geographic spread of violence, is a little more than I would have gathered.”…

Obama Stuck between Wars on Iraq, Afghanistan
Nicola Nasser, thepeoplesvoice
September 26, 2009 – It was extraordinarily questionable why U.S. President Barak Obama chose not to credit the War on Afghanistan with a separate paragraph in his speech to the General Assembly of the United Nations on September 23, to “note” the war on Iraq with only a four – line paragraph, and instead to escalate his war of words on Iran, as if the expansion of the war on Afghanistan into Pakistan was not enough over-depletion of an already exhausted U.S. human, financial and military resources, and as if a threat of a third war in the Middle East would serve in any way the U.S. vital interests in the region or contribute to U.S. elusive victory in either one of both wars…

Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
September 26, 2009 – Translation of the lead article in issue #48 of Khiaban newspaper, about the first day of the month of Mehr, traditionally the time for schools to reopen. The Iranian universities have historically been the sight of the fiercest battles between the successive dictatorships (of the last one hundred years) and the people represented by the students. This is exactly why the regime, throughout its life, has actively tried to pacify the campuses. To no avail! The next historical stage of the Iranian student movement will be a significant one…

Analysis: Israeli strike intended to disrupt calm
Ma’an News
September 26, 2009 – An Israeli airstrike that killed three Palestinian fighters on Friday night was targeted at Islamic Jihad in a calculated move intended to disrupt a precarious calm in the Gaza Strip, political analysts told Ma’an on Saturday. The strike targeted Islamic Jihad in hopes that the group would respond violently, thus embarrassing the Hamas-controlled government in Gaza, which has assiduously enforced a unilateral ceasefire since the end of Israel’s three-week war on Gaza last January…

Afghan Resistance Statement
The Afghans Are Approaching the Day of their Real Eid
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
September 26, 2009 – The Afghans are celebrating Eidul-fitre in circumstances that their country is under occupation of brutal invaders and mercenaries of the world who have turned the whole country, Afghanistan, into a prison and a torture cell because of their anti-Islamic and anti human policies and the hatred that they are nurturing. The miserable Afghans are grappling with threats, casualties, injuries and other various hardships at the hand of the invading troops. Neither the Afghan farmers are able to cultivate their land with a peace of mind and relief nor Afghan shop keepers, businessmen, buyers and seller are able to commute between their homes and the market without fear…

Northern Afghan violence undercuts US supply route
By LORI HINNANT and AMIR SHAH (AP)
September 26, 2009 — Growing Taliban influence in northern Afghanistan is threatening a new military supply line painstakingly negotiated by the U.S., as rising violence takes hold on the one-time Silk Road route. The north has deteriorated over just a few months, showing how quickly Taliban influence is spreading in a once peaceful area. Local officials say the Taliban are establishing a shadow government along the dilapidated road that ultimately could prevent vital supplies carried in hundreds of trucks every week from reaching the military…

AP sources: Guantanamo might not close by January
By JENNIFER LOVEN (AP)
September 26, 2009 – The White House acknowledged for the first time Friday that it might not be able to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay by January as President Barack Obama has promised. Senior administration officials told The Associated Press that difficulties in completing the lengthy review of detainee files and resolving thorny legal and logistical questions mean the president’s self-imposed January deadline may slip. Obama remains as committed to closing the facility as he was when, as one of his first acts in office, he pledged to shut it down, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to more freely discuss the sensitive issue…

September 26, 2009 – “Stop the Spread of Guantanamitis” is a demonstration organized by Amnesty International’s Islington and Hackney Group — with support from the London Guantánamo Campaign, Redress, Peace Strike, the Helen Bamber Foundation, the Stop the War Coalition, CAMPACC (the Campaign Against Criminalising Communities) and the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers — to raise awareness of the plight of the remaining 225 prisoners in the US prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and also to discuss how “Guantanamitis” has infected international law around the world, leading to a situation whereby imprisonment without charge or trial, “extraordinary rendition” and torture have been disguised as necessary behavior — rather than as war crimes and criminal activities — by governments around the world…

Devastating Report Documents Israeli Crimes Against Civilians in Gaza: Where’s the Outrage?
Roane Carey
September 26, 2009 – … Predictably, the Goldstone report was met by a wave of angry denunciations from the Israeli government — which had refused to cooperate with the investigators — and most of the Israeli media. The mainstream media here have downplayed the investigation’s significance; news coverage has been sparse, and not one major U.S. daily has seen fit to editorialize on it (unless you count a nasty little screed from the New York Daily News calling the report a “blood libel against Israel”). And U.S. pundits and politicians — including UN ambassador Susan Rice, who called it “unbalanced, one-sided and basically unacceptable” — have been overwhelmingly critical…

By Hammoud Mounassar (AFP)
September 26, 2009 — Yemen’s government is ready to fight Shiite rebels in the mountainous north for “years”, the president vowed on Saturday, though he also said hostilities could end if the rebels agree a ceasefire. “We will continue the battle for five or six years. A Week of Dimming Peace Prospects
Analysis by Helena Cobban*
September 26, 2009 – Eight months after Barack Obama launched his presidency by promising a speedy push for Palestinian-Israeli peace, that effort has stalled badly. And there are now growing fears that the top levels of Obama’s peace team are torn by internal disagreements that may undermine the whole peace effort. Some of these problems were on view during two high-level appearances Obama made in New York this week. On Tuesday, speaking to the media after the three-way meeting he held with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, Obama notably avoided saying anything about the failure of the high-profile campaign he and his chief peace envoy, George Mitchell, have pursued to “persuade” the Israeli government to stop building settlement housing in the occupied West Bank…

US-led invasion of Iraq opened door for anti-gay torture and murders
Megan Coffey
September 26, 2009 – The UK Guardian reports that attacks on gay Iraqis began with the US-led invasion in 2003, prior to which the Iraqi LGBT community enjoyed relative freedom and safety under Saddam Hussein’s regime. According to the London-based group Iraqi LGBT, almost seven hundred gay people (mostly male) have been murdered in Iraq since 2004, with at least seventy of those in the past five months. Actual figures are probably higher, since “cases involving married men are not reported.”… Iraqi LGBT believes the attacks, which often include ritualized torture, are being carried out by the Iraqi police as well as by the Badr and Sadr militias…

Palestinian fishers in Gaza Strip demonstrating for right to earn living without daily harassment
Maher Ibrahim
September 26, 2009 – Fishers in the Gaza Strip are asking the international community for protection against daily Israeli aggression both at sea and on the shore. The fishing industry has been effectively destroyed, Rami Abdo said today, by the Israeli war on the Strip and the continuation of aggression and harassment. Fishing boats and nets are often confiscated and destroyed, fishers are arrested. Abdo, a spokesperson for the Popular Committee against the Siege said that the direct loss in revenue for each day of closure of the sea is up to 70,000 USD. Other losses are estimated at 30,000 USD per day…

The risks of de-contextualizing Gaza war crimes
Goncalo de Almeida Ribeiro, Vishaal Kishore and Nimer Sultany
September 26, 2009 – The recent release of a report by the United Nations fact-finding mission chaired by jurist Richard Goldstone concerning the Israeli onslaught on Gaza in late December 2008 through January 2009 sheds important light on human rights violations in Israel/Palestine. One would hope that upon reading this report (or indeed any other from the long list of reports concerning the Occupied Palestinian Territories released by various human rights organizations) readers will be outraged by the ongoing atrocities committed in the region. Despite expressly claiming to take into account the historical background to the Gaza events, the report, by its very nature, singles out a particular set of facts, and a limited period of time as the primary locus for investigation…

Iran to allow IAEA visit nuclear site
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI (AP)
September 26, 2009 — Iran will allow the U.N. nuclear agency to inspect a newly revealed and still unfinished uranium enrichment facility, the country’s nuclear chief told state television Saturday. Vice President Ali Akbar Salehi didn’t specify when inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency could visit the site, but said it has to be worked out with the agency under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty rules. Iran’s newly revealed enrichment site is said to be in the arid mountains near the holy city of Qom, inside a heavily guarded, underground facility belonging to the elite Revolutionary Guard…

Military Resistance [GI Spc] 7I9: “Unprepared”
Thomas F. Barton
…The Taliban’s expansion into parts of Afghanistan that it once had little influence over comes as the Obama administration is struggling to settle on a new military strategy for Afghanistan, and as the White House renews its efforts to get Pakistan’s government to be more aggressive about killing or capturing Taliban leaders inside Pakistan. These assessments echo a recent report by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top military commander in Afghanistan, in portraying the Taliban as an increasingly sophisticated shadow government that sees itself on the cusp of victory in the war-ravaged nation. General McChrystal’s report describes how Mullah Omar’s insurgency has appointed shadow governors in most provinces of Afghanistan, levies taxes, establishes Islamic courts there and conducts a formal review of its military campaign each winter. “The Taliban is trying to create trouble elsewhere to alleviate pressure” in the south, said one senior American intelligence official. “They’ve outmaneuvered us time and time again.” General McChrystal said in a telephone interview on Wednesday that he had been surprised by “the growth of the shadow government, the growth of its coercion and its growth into the north and west.”..
