Happy Junta Grounds: Militarist Machiavellis Maneuver for More War
Chris Floyd
September 25, 2009 – …Escalating the war in Pakistan — with ground troops, no less — is, to put it bluntly, insane. The efforts already undertaken there have been greatly destabilizing — in a nuclear-armed nation riven by ethnic and regional conflicts. One thing that does unite the Pakistanis, however, is their vociferous opposition to American attacks on their soil. But the fact that Pakistan is a sovereign nation — and an American ally — cuts absolutely no ice at all with the war councils in Washington — or with their faithful media scribes. Witness the astonishing passage from a Washington Post story about Pakistan’s increasing pushback against the heavy imperial hand…

Obama asserts power to detain suspects without trial
By Tom Eley
25 September 2009 – The Obama administration announced this week that it intends to continue the Bush administration policy of holding terrorism suspects indefinitely without charge or trial. On Wednesday, the Justice Department said that President Obama may continue to hold “terror suspects” indefinitely and without judicial review based on the congressional Authorization to Use Military Force that came in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington—the same rationale used by Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush…

5 US troops killed in southern Afghan attacks
By HEIDI VOGT (AP)
September 25, 2009 — Five American troops were killed within 24 hours in southern Afghanistan, where Taliban militants have conducted an unrelenting campaign of bombings and attacks against U.S. and NATO forces. This has been the deadliest year of the war for international forces and the Obama administration is debating whether to add still more troops to the 21,000-strong influx that began pouring into the country over the summer. The five deaths announced Friday occurred in three separate attacks the day before in the south, where U.S. and NATO commanders have ramped up their operations to try to reverse Taliban gains…

Birth defects in Gaza due to illegal weapons used by Israel during the war
Saed Bannoura
September 25, 2009 – The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza reported Friday that eight months after the Israeli war ended, several birth defect cases were reported among the Gaza Strip newborns. Dr. Mowaiya Hassanen, director of the Emergency department at the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, stated that several newborn babies have heart defects and abnormalities. He said that such cases are caused by Israel’s use of illegal munitions against the civilians in the Gaza Strip…

Interview With A Tel Rumeida Settler
“We should have Israel, they can have Texas or Uganda or Sinai”
Palestine Monitor
September 25, 2009 – Hebron remains the hub of tension and violence in the West Bank. Much of this comes from the settlers of Tel Rumeida, a community of 800 international Zionists living in the heart of the city, notorious for frequent, unprovoked attacks on their Muslim neighbours. We spoke with New Jersey-born David Wilder, a community leader, to explain their continued presence in Hebron…

Israeli drive to prevent Jewish girls dating Arabs
Jonathan Cook, Foreign Correspondent
September 25, 2009 – A local authority in Israel has announced that it is establishing a special team of youth counsellors and psychologists whose job it will be to identify young Jewish women who are dating Arab men and “rescue” them. The move by the municipality of Petah Tikva, a city close to Tel Aviv, is the latest in a series of separate – and little discussed – initiatives from official bodies, rabbis, private organisations and groups of Israeli residents to try to prevent interracial dating and marriage…

Manuel Zelaya: Israelis sent to kill me
Ynet
September 25, 2009 – Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, who returned to his country this week after three months in exile, is accusing his government of hiring Israeli mercenaries to torture him with high-frequency radiation in his safe haven in the Brazilian Embassy. In a conversation with the Miami Herald, Zelaya said that he has begun to suffer from throat pains resulting from poisonous gases being leaked into the embassy in Tegucigalpa. He also said that he fears mercenaries will enter the building and murder him. “They are threatening to kill us,” he said…

Think Again: Palestine
By Zahi Khouri *
September 25, 2009 – …Israel argues that its withdrawal from Gaza was rewarded with rocket attacks by Hamas. The attraction of such an argument lies in its simplicity. But just as “economic peace” is designed to divert attention away from the real issues, the argument that a Gaza withdrawal was dangerous for the Israelis is designed to mask the reality that Israel never stopped occupying the Gaza Strip. Contrary to popular belief, Israel’s unilateral disengagement from Gaza in 2005 did not bring about an end to the occupation. Yes, Israel removed its settlers (who, in many cases, relocated to settlements in the West Bank). And yes, Israel withdrew its troops — though only as far as the border. From that close distance, Israel has imposed a medieval-style siege on Gaza that continues to this day. Israel remains an occupying power under international law because it retains effective control over Gaza’s borders and its land, sea, and airspace, allowing it to suffocate and starve Gaza as it is doing today. The scale of the humanitarian crisis that Israel has created in Gaza is hard to convey.

Video: Human guinea pigs! Israel forces people to drink uranium?
RussiaToday
September 25, 2009 – Drinking juice laced with uranium is just one of many clinical trials allegedly conducted at an Israeli nuclear plant. A human rights activist has accused the plant’s management of forcing its workers to take part in life-threatening experiments for the sake of nuclear developments.
They also claim the government and the military are involved in a cover-up of the tests.

Taliban ‘opens northern front against German troops’ in Afghanistan
By Ben Farmer in Kunduz province
September 25, 2009 – German officials said the Taliban’s ruling Quetta council, led by Mullah Mohammad Omar, had ordered a campaign of attacks this summer which had seen security in the northern province of Kunduz plummet. Diplomats said the German forces in Kunduz had been targeted as a possible weak link in the Nato-led coalition. Insurgents hoped to intensify growing opposition to the mission among Germans in advance of the country’s elections on Sunday. The campaign showed a growing sophistication in Taliban strategic thinking, analysts have said…

How to Trap a President in a Losing War
Petraeus, McChrystal, and the Surgettes
By Tom Engelhardt
September 25, 2009 – Front and center in the debate over the Afghan War these days are General Stanley “Stan” McChrystal, Afghan war commander, whose “classified, pre-decisional” and devastating report — almost eight years and at least $220 billion later, the war is a complete disaster — was conveniently, not to say suspiciously, leaked to Bob Woodward of the Washington Post by we-know-not-who at a particularly embarrassing moment for Barack Obama; Admiral Michael “Mike” Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who has been increasingly vocal about a “deteriorating” war and the need for more American boots on the ground; and the president himself, who blitzed every TV show in sight last Sunday and Monday for his health reform program, but spent significant time expressing doubts about sending more American troops to Afghanistan…

The Iran nuclear revelation
Marc Lynch
September 25, 2009 – …According to the New York Times, the administration went public because the Iranians had discovered that Western intelligence had “breached the secrecy surrounding the project.” Perhaps. But it seems rather more likely that the administration chose to go public as part of a calculated effort to ratchet up the credibility of the threat of tough sanctions ahead of the October 1 meeting between Iran and the P5+1 in Geneva. The public disclosure puts Iran on the back foot ahead of those talks, and appears to have encouraged Russia to more seriously consider supporting such sanctions (that, plus the missile defense decision probably). This has to change Iranian calculations — indeed, the perception that the sanctions are now more likely is precisely what may lead the Iranians to make more concessions to avoid them. It also demonstrates to the Iranians the quality of Western intelligence and the difficulty of deception and denial — especially in the atmosphere of (quite warranted) mistrust of their intentions… So despite what I expect to see swarming the media in the next few days I actually think that this public revelation makes war less rather than more likely…

Obama, the Gap Band, and Today’s Iran’s News
Patrick Barry
September 25, 2009 – …Something else to note on timing is that the U.S. has reportedly known about this facility for “years,” a period which coincides with the development and release of the the 2007 NIE on Iran’s nuclear program, a report which found that the Iranians were not actively seeking a nuclear weapon. If that timing is right, then while its troubling that this facility was kept secret, its existence does not actually prove that Iran is moving past the break-out capability they are suspected to be pursuing. From the public’s perspective, Iran is no closer to a nuclear weapon now than they were before this intelligence was released. The last point about this facility is that its mere existence strongly debunks the notation that a military strike would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon..

Iran ‘concealed nuclear facility’
BBC News
September 25, 2009 – Iran concealed a partially-built second uranium enrichment plant in defiance of calls for transparency over its nuclear plans, US President Barack Obama says. The US, UK and France said the UN had to be given immediate access and urged tough new sanctions, while Russia also said it was “seriously concerned”. But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denied that the facility was in breach of IAEA rules. The Western leaders would regret their statements, he added. Iran told the UN about the plant on Monday, saying it was not operational yet and would provide nuclear energy. Tehran has previously acknowledged it has one enrichment plant, at Natanz. Iran’s decision to build a secret facility represented a “direct challenge to the basic compact” of the global non-proliferation regime, US President Barack Obama said, making a statement in Pittsburgh, where he is hosting a G20 summit…

US Mulls Increasing Drone Strikes in Pakistan
Will Pakistan Escalation Come With Afghan Escalation?
Jason Ditz
September 25, 2009 – In a move reportedly being spearheaded by Vice President Joe Biden, the United States is reportedly considering a dramatic increase in the number of drone attacks on Pakistani soil. Biden, a skeptic of the Gen. McChrystal plan to add 45,000 more troops to the war in Afghanistan, seems to be presenting “emphasize Pakistan” as an alternative to committing more troops to the unpopular war…

Police State Raids against Immigrants
Stephen Lendman
September 25, 2009 – In 2003, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established its largest investigative and enforcement branch – the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement arm (ICE) “as a law enforcement agency for the post-9/11 era, to integrate enforcement authorities against criminal and terrorist activities, including the fights against human trafficking and smuggling violent transnational gangs and sexual predators on children (who are) criminal (and) terrorist” threats to the nation. Along with Muslims, Latinos are its prime targets, often using militarized unconstitutional tactics against vulnerable, defenseless people. Post-9/11, the Bush administration initiated them, and they continue under Obama…

Obama’s Choice
By Aijaz Zaka Syed – Dubai
September 25, 2009 – Why do I have this feeling that we have been here and done all this before? I know, I know. This US President is different, as different from his predecessors as a sunny day is distinguishable from a dark, oppressive night.
But watching Barack Obama shake hands with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in New York this week and smile for the waiting cameras, I had this weird feeling I have seen it all before.
But haven’t we indeed all seen this before? This is what we have repeatedly witnessed since Bill Clinton proudly presented Yasser Arafat and Isaac Rabin before the world on the White House lawns in 1993…
