Max Boot: Vulgar Propagandist and Apologist for War Crimes
By Max Kantar
September 23, 2009 – The recent publication of the UNHRC’s report on Israel’s December-January assault on the Gaza Strip, also known as the Goldstone Report, has elicited some rather hysterical reactions from Israel’s leading apologists. Perhaps among the most desperate of the attempts to deflect legitimate criticism of Israeli war crimes is an article entitled, “The Goldstone Report,” [1] written by Max Boot. Boot is an award winning author, distinguished journalist, and served as an editor for the Christian Science Monitor and The Wall Street Journal during the 1990s. He is currently a senior fellow for National Security Studies at the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations…

Curtain Call: Grim Glimpses of the World’s True Workings
Chris Floyd
September 23, 2009 – …And on it goes. A war of aggression in Iraq — avidly sought by the profiteers and propagandists in the network revealed by Edmonds — kills more than a million innocent people while engendering perhaps the most gargantuan corruption scams in world history: loot which sloshes back into the coffers of America’s elite, enabling them to tighten their grip on the nation’s politics even further, buying candidates — even the most “progressive” ones — who will ensure that any “bailouts” or “reforms” will serve the privileged first, and that the militarist agenda of endless conflict, burgeoning arms sales, and bottomless expenditures for the war machine will continue unhindered…

The “democracy” that can do no wrong
Israel and US apologists rattled by UN report on war crimes in Gaza
By Paul J. Balles
September 23, 2009 – Israelis and their Zionist supporters in the US are having temper tantrums over the latest UN Human Rights Council report on the attacks in Gaza. Judge Richard Goldstone, a South African war crimes prosecutor, led the investigating team. “The Goldstone report is a kangaroo court against Israel, whose consequences harm the struggle of democratic countries against terror,” laments Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, shifting blame from fact to fact-finder. Ex-Moldovan nightclub bouncer, now Israeli foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman groans that the Goldstone “commission investigating the Gaza war “did not give the facts a chance to confuse them”…

Taliban grow stronger in ‘safe’ Afghan north, west
By Sharafuddin Sharafyar, Reuters
September 23 – …In recent months security has deteriorated sharply in the north and west, where there are some U.S. special forces teams but where mainly European soldiers are based, who the Taliban perceive as weaker than the Americans. “Last year (the Taliban) didn’t have much of a presence in the west and the north and they want to target the NATO troops that are there, such as the Germans and the Italians,” said Ahmed Rashid, author of books on the Taliban. “I think (the Taliban) had a very concerted campaign this year to penetrate the north and the west … they wanted to draw their troops out of the tribal border areas with Pakistan.”…

Israel tightens the noose on advocacy organizations
Mya Guarnieri
September 23, 2009 – Mutasem Billah Abu-Mastfa was born in Gaza. Though he is just nine months old, his parents are already trying to get him out of the Strip. Abu-Mastfa was born with severe congenital heart defects — his heart, riddled with holes, is on the right side of his chest. He is currently receiving treatment at al-Nasser Pediatric Hospital in Gaza, but his condition is deteriorating. And due to the ongoing Israeli blockade the medical system in Gaza — short on supplies, its staff unable to leave the Strip to obtain further training — is unable to cope with such a complicated case. On 13 September, Abu-Mastfa was expected to arrive at an Israeli facility, Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer. There he was due to receive the care that might prolong, or even save, his life. But the date came and went and he remained in Gaza…

Apartheid is the Root of Israel’s Aggressions
A Black Agenda Radio commentary by Glen Ford
September 23, 2009 – The State of Israel, by far the world champion violator of international law as interpreted by the United Nations, is once again raining vitriol and insult on the world body that gave it birth 61 years ago. Since almost the day that the U.N. recognized the Jewish state in 1948, Israel has placed itself above the accepted norms of civilized behavior. In its six decades of existence, Israel has violated virtually every United Nations declaration and flaunted countless tenets of international legality, most often with the diplomatic, economic and military protection of the United States. Israel’s arrogant disregard for the world body reached new heights with the release of a U.N. report urging Israel to conduct an “independent” investigation into “war crimes” and “serious violations” of human rights during its brutal attack on Gaza, last winter…

Israeli Women Serving Prison Time for Refusal to Join IDF
Tim King
September 23, 2009 – …The women listed below were sent to prison; “Many were incarcerated again and again as they refused to enlist after their release from prison. Some are part of the movement called ‘Shministim’ – meaning ‘high school seniors’ – a movement of young men and women who refuse to enlist. Others came to this hard decision on their own. All are heroes,” Israeli Peace Activist Gila Svirsky, said…

How Opposition to Israel’s Annexation Wall Is Targeted and Suppressed
by Stephen Lendman
September 23, 2009 – On July 9, 2004 in a unanimous decision, the International Court of Justice (IJC) ruled that “the construction of the Wall being built by Israel, and its associated regime, are contrary to international law….” It said construction on it must cease. Built sections must be dismantled, Palestinian land returned, and compensation paid for property destroyed. The UN General Assembly endorsed the decision. Israel rejected it out of hand, keeps seizing Palestinian land, continues the wall’s construction, and ruthlessly suppresses efforts to halt it. In defiance of international law, Israel’s High Court ruled that erection of a “barrier” may continue for security reasons even though its purpose is solely to steal resources and land that will include over 12% of the West Bank when completed…

Another farcical show
By Khalid Amayreh
September 23, 2009 – One doesn’t have to be a prophet to predict the outcome, or more correctly failure, of the three-way meeting between President Obama, the Israeli premier Benyamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (whose term in office expired in January 2009), which took place in New York on Tuesday. The meeting comes on the heels of two important events: First the nearly total failure of Obama’s personal Envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, to convince the extremist Israeli leadership to freeze Jewish settlement expansion in the West Bank and East Jerusalem…

Human Rights Lawyer on Bagram Prison
‘The Obama Administration Has Completely Failed’
SPIEGEL
September 23, 2009 – SPIEGEL: Right after taking office, US President Barack Obama announced his plan to close Guantanamo. It looked like he would reverse the human rights policies of the Bush administration. Will the detainees the US military prison in Bagram, Afghanistan now be given legal rights? Foster: Unfortunately, the US government did not change its position on Bagram when Obama took office. The government still claims that our clients are not entitled to any legal protections under US law. It maintains that even those individuals who they brought to Bagram from other countries, and have held without charge for more than six years, are still not entitled to speak with their attorney, and they are arguing now that they are not entitled to have their cases heard in US courts…

Gaza: daily life and celebration merge: last day of Eid
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
September 23, 2009 – The third day of Eid, kids are still in their new clothes, playing in the streets on makeshift swings or simplified, hand-powered fair-ground rides. But there are also the extremely poor who aren’t taking the day off, instead profiting from holiday waste to scour the trash bins for recyclables. One such donkey and cart is slugging uphill as I walk behind. It stops and the two youths driving it hop off to poke through the bin, moving on to the next bin a couple hundred metres on…

Gaza – Israeli massacre and siege overshadow all: Eid day 2
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
September 23, 2009 – “I had a chicken farm with 3,000 chickens. On the 300 dunams [1 dunam is 1000 square metres] of land I share with neighbours I had 300 olive trees, 130 dates, 200 lemons, 150 papayas, 500 guavas, 200 clementines. I had 50 dunams of wheat and another 50 of peas. This was all destroyed, all but about 400 chickens. Destroyed before Israel even waged it’s 23 day massacre of Gaza in winter 2008/2009. The last of the chickens died in that attack. My radish crops, which I’d planted where trees once stood, I had to plow under because they were poisoned by the phosphorous which rained down here.” Down in Al Faraheen, the farming village east of Khan Younis, a visiting delegation wants to see life in the ‘buffer zone’. We visit Jaber Abu Rjila whose daily life is a microcosm of many of the problems in Gaza: -his land has been razed repeatedly by invading Israeli bulldozers; -his house has been shot up by the Israeli soldiers powering the military dozers; his wife and children have been terrorized, trapped in their home while the invaders shot up and destroyed their livelihoods –one of his younger daughters is psychologically scarred from the experience, won’t eat, is consequently malnourished and nervous…

Time to Break Free from Partition Straightjacket
By John V. Whitbeck
September 23, 2009 – The desperate and desultory New York ‘summit’ among Barack Obama, Binyamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas and the evident capitulation of Obama to Israeli defiance of even his minimalist effort to achieve mere maintenance of the status quo have left most observers who genuinely seek peace with some measure of justice in an understandable state of despair. However, there is an alternative to despair — breaking free from the partition straitjacket and runaround and demanding democracy and equal rights for all in the unitary state which, de facto, has already existed for the past 42 years…

Baha Mousa ‘killed after father saw soldiers stealing’
By DAVID STRINGER (AP)
September 23, 2009 – …Mousa said that on the night of the hotel raid he arrived to collect his son from work, only to see military vehicles surrounding the building and staff lying face down on the ground — including Baha. He said he saw a British soldier stuff bank notes from a hotel safe into his pocket and passed on his concerns to the man’s superior — whom he identified only as “Lieutenant Mike. Mousa said he pointed his son out to the soldiers, hoping troops would release him in return for bringing the alleged theft to their attention. “I think they knew the one I was pointing to was my son, therefore they wanted revenge against me on him,” Mousa said….

The self-styled AUCS, claiming to represent Israel, though situated in the illegal settlement of Ariel in the occupied West Bank, was one out of 20 architecture teams short-listed from university entries last April to compete for the Solar Decathlon-Europe 2010. The Spanish Government together with the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid organizes this most prestigious competition for sustainable architecture in the world…

23 September 2009 – …Catch my sparkle… A fallen nest. A nest of words, gathered in a monsoon of bullets, plucked from a dried field of anonymous corpses waiting for their name tags, name tags to be hung around their necks like a talisman…a last goodbye before being swallowed in the belly of the earth, in an amorous dance whose steps reach Eternity. Former KBR employee: I know I was drugged and raped in Iraq
Len Cannon
September 22, 2009 – Conroe native Jamie Leigh Jones made national news when she claimed to have been sexually assaulted by several co-workers at KBR. At the time KBR, was a subsidiary of Halliburton. Jones has talked openly about what she says happened in Iraq while she was working for the Houston-based company. “I am living with a disfigurement to my chest. I had reconstructive surgery and I am so angered that someone would violate my body in such a personal way,” said Jones. Jones was 20 years old in 2005 when she claims she was raped by KBR co-workers after someone put a drug in her drink… “I would estimate between severe sexual harassment and rape that we have 30-40 women who have reported such things to Halliburton, and these are just the ones we know about,” said Kelly…

Us or Them in Afghanistan?
Tom Engelhardt & Ann Jones
September 23, 2009 – … Better nutrition notwithstanding — Senator Levin, Senator McCain — “our” Afghans are never going to fight for an American cause, with or without American troops, the way we imagine they should. They’re never going to fight with the energy of the Taliban for a national government that we installed against Afghan wishes, then more recently set up to steal another election, and now seem about to ratify in office, despite incontrovertible evidence of flagrant fraud. Why should they? Even if the U.S. could win their minds, their hearts are not in it. One small warning: Don’t take the insecurity of the Afghan security forces as an argument for sending yet more American troops to Afghanistan. Aggressive Americans (now numbering 68,000) are likely to be even less successful than reluctant Afghan forces. Afghans want peace, but the kharaji (foreign) troops (100,000, if you include U.S. allies in NATO) bring death and destruction wherever they go…

ACLU Sues For Bagram Records
Documents Would Shed Light On Detention And Treatment Of Prisoners At U.S. Detention Center In Afghanistan
ACLU
September 22, 2009 – The American Civil Liberties Union today filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit seeking the disclosure of documents related to the detention and treatment of prisoners at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. According to the complaint, the government should promptly make public the Bagram records, including a list of vital information about detainees being held there, the rules that govern the facility and documents pertaining to the conditions of confinement and status review process afforded prisoners. “There is growing concern that Bagram has become the new Guantánamo – except with hundreds more prisoners, held indefinitely in reportedly harsher conditions, with no access to lawyers or courts,” said Melissa Goodman, staff attorney with the ACLU National Security Project…

UN SUMMIT~GAZA RESPONDS
Irish4Palestine
…Abbas has NO mandate to negotiate for all the Palestinians. Any deals Abbas (the US/Israeli owned Agent) will fail miserably without Hamas being involved in any negotiations. Hamas won a landslide in the Elections, they cannot be ignored, nor can those who voted for them. The equivalent would be if the US Republican party (the one NOT in power nor with the presidency) went out and made some international deal representing the entire USA. Those kinds of dirty dealings never work. They tried this sort of thing in Ireland and it failed miserably until Sinn Fein was taken into the process. It will fail miserably in Palestine as well….
