Afghanistan Victims’ families tell their stories following Nato airstrike in Afghanistan
Ghaith Abdul-Ahad in Kunduz
September 11, 2009 – At first light last Friday, in the Chardarah district of Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan, the villagers gathered around the twisted wreckage of two fuel tankers that had been hit by a Nato airstrike. They picked their way through a heap of almost a hundred charred bodies and mangled limbs which were mixed with ash, mud and the melted plastic of jerry cans, looking for their brothers, sons and cousins. They called out their names but received no answers. By this time, everyone was dead. What followed is one of the more macabre scenes of this or any war. The grief-stricken relatives began to argue and fight over the remains of the men and boys who a few hours earlier had greedily sought the tanker’s fuel. Poor people in one of the world’s poorest countries, they had been trying to hoard as much as they could for the coming winter…

Healthy Profits: Corporate Money Moves Tell the True Tale of Obama’s “Reforms”
Chris Floyd
September 11, 2009 – Want to know the true significance of Barack Obama’s speech on health care “reform” Wednesday night? Then just follow the money … Of course there will be no reform, and there was never going to be. Obama is going to “reform” America’s broken health care system the same way he has “reformed” the War on Terror and “reformed” Wall Street: by taking the existing policies and making them even worse…

NGO Reports on Gaza War Belie Israeli Claims
Analysis by Helena Cobban*
September 11, 2009 – This week, two respected human rights organisations – one Palestinian, one Israeli – each came out with very full reports into the extent of the damage caused by the assault Israel waged against Gaza last winter…PCHR and B’Tselem published their latest reports in the lead-up to next week’s widely awaited presentation to the U.N.’s Human Rights Council of the final report on Gaza war casualties prepared by the investigative commission headed by South African judge Richard Goldstone. PCHR and B’Tselem based their tallies on painstaking field research. (There are some small discrepancies between them. But most can be explained by differences in the definitions used.) The Israeli government, by contrast, has not revealed the methodology by which – without having any access at all to surviving family members or local officials on the ground – it felt able to compile its much lower tally…

NRP Watch
Linda Gradstein Has Done It Again on Gaza
By FELICE PACE
September 11, 2009 – NPR’s reporter Linda Gradstein has done it again. She has managed to take a “must report” story on Israeli-Palestinian relations – the new report by B’Tselem on the non-combatants, including children, killed by the Israeli military during the Israeli attack on Gaza – and report it in a manner which minimizes the story’s potential to create opposition to Israeli treatment of Palestinians on the West Bank and Gaza. Virtually every other published report on this story mentions the number of non-combatant children under 16 which the group B’Tselem – an Israeli human rights organization – found had been killed by the Israeli military in their most recent invasion of Gaza. Many news reports made the 320 Gaza children 16 and under who were killed the story’s lead. But not Linda Gradstein; she completely omitted that piece of information..

Analysis: Shebaa Farms key to Levant hydro-diplomacy
IRIN news
September 11, 2009 – – The politics of the Israeli-occupied Shebaa Farms, a rugged sliver of mountainside wedged between Lebanon, Israel and Syria, have long overshadowed what some Lebanese environmentalists call “the real issue” of the disputed area: its water resources. Now activists are calling for hydro-diplomacy to take precedence over political manoeuvring as the most effective solution to one of the key stumbling blocks to Middle East peace…

Worlds apart
Saleh Al-Naami
September 11, 2009 – … Hamas and several Palestinian factions have previously rejected proposals made by Egypt, some accusing Cairo of taking sides with Abbas. For now, all signs indicate that Hamas and Fatah are on a collision course. Abbas and his supporters are hoping that Hamas will crumble under the weight of the siege. And Hamas is hoping that Fatah will become popularly discredited. As things stand, the gap between the two biggest Palestinian groups appears unbridgeable…

Karoubi’s Letter to Sadeq Larijani
Mehdi Karoubi, Translated by pedestrian
September 11, 2009 – …I still insist on the original letter I wrote to the head of the expediency council, and after the terror of recent events, I am more determined than ever. When I see that the head of a military organization – the documents are all available – writes a letter to the ministry of health and orders it forbidden to give copies of medical records to those who have been inured in recent events, and prevents the hospitals from giving the victims their records, I am more determined to find out what reasons exist for such threats and fear? According to the oath doctors take, they are obliged to treat anyone who comes to them, even if the injured is a long, lost enemy of their father. And you, as the chief justice, should judge this: how can a doctor feel safe about attending to his medical obligations when such a letter is written by such a high ranking military official? If an innocent victim dies in such circumstance, how can you hear the pleas of his/her family as chief justice [under such conditions]? If someone has been raped, how can they obtain the necessary documents from medical experts and give them to you in such an atmospheres of terror?…

One killed, 40 injured in Abu Ghraib prison riots
DPA
September 11, 2009 – One prisoner was killed and 40 others injured in riots in the western Baghdad prison formerly known as Abu Ghraib, media reports said Friday. Prisoners set fire to Baghdad Central Prison during riots that started late Thursday, the Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported, adding that the violence was triggered by a search for mobile phones. “Jail authorities started to take security measures and put out the fire,” a media official at the ministry of justice was quoted by the agency as saying. Iraqi lawmaker Zeinab al-Kanani told DPA that the prisoners started the riots after security forces abused the prisoners…

Camp Ashraf
The Common Ills
September 11, 2009 – …An Iraqi judge ruled that the 36 dissidents, who went on a hunger strike in captivity, should be released. But Iraqi Interior Ministry officials, using new tactics, have argued that the dissidents entered the country illegally and should be expelled — obviously to Iran. If this tactic is successful, it could be applied to the 3,400 or so PMOI members remaining in Camp Ashraf. So the Iraqi court rules that prisoners should be released and the Iraqi government decides they don’t have to listen…

Eight years after 9/11 Taliban now have a permanent presence in 80% of Afghanistan
ICOS – International Council on Security and Development
September 10, 2009 – The Taliban now have a permanent presence in 80% of Afghanistan, up from 72% in November 2008, according to a new map released today by the International Council on Security and Development (ICOS). According to ICOS, another 17% of Afghanistan is seeing ‘substantial’ Taliban activity. Taken together, these figures show that the Taliban has a significant presence in virtually all of Afghanistan. “Despite the presence of tens of thousands of foreign troops in Afghanistan, the return, the spread and the advance of the Taliban is now without question” said Norine MacDonald QC, President and Lead Field Researcher for ICOS…

Israel (still) targeting fishermen, farmers in Gaza
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
September 11, 2009 – On 31 August, Israeli gunboats shot at and shelled the fishing trawler of Khaled al-Habil, destroying it completely and leaving the boat’s 18 fishermen and their families without a source of income. One week earlier, on 24 August, Israeli soldiers along Gaza’s northern border shot dead a young farm worker, Said al-Hussumi. Sixteen-year-old al-Hussumi was killed while working on land a few hundred meters from the border with his cousin Masoud Tanboura, who was seriously wounded. “We were working in Attatra, near the sea, about 350 meters from the [border] fence,” said Tanboura of Beit Lahiya. Tanboura’s survival is miraculous as his chest cavity was pierced from left to right by a bullet…

Israel in Africa
Galal Nassar
September 10, 2009 – …Israel’s ultra-right foreign minister believes he can sneak into the backyard of the Arab and Islamic world in order to deprive it of strategic depth. It is therefore essential that we expose the true nature of Israeli economic and military plans in Africa and expose their motives. The fact that Israel is physically present in occupied Palestine does not mean that the Zionist peril threatens Palestine and the Palestinians alone. Zionist designs target every corner of the Arab and Islamic world, in which they fuel crises, weave plots, exploit resources, sap expertise and generally conspire against the people. The Zionist hand can be detected behind the conflicts that rage between Arab regimes. Its espionage networks seek to infiltrate Arab and Muslim societies. Israel’s scientists and experts steal our subterranean water and its merchants roam the Arab and Islamic world to either purloin or purchase uranium. Now, more than ever, Israel’s military, security, economic and political tentacles have reached every corner of Africa, donning many different philanthropic façades in order to exploit Africa’s hunger and desperation in order to drive the Arabs and Muslims out of a continent in which they have always been welcome…

Problems Defending Palestinians in Israeli Courts
Stephen Lendman
September 11, 2009 – Established in 1992, the Addameer (Arabic for conscience) Prisoners Support and Human Rights Association provides support for Palestinian prisoners and works to end torture, arbitrary arrests and detentions, other forms of abuse, and unjust and unequal treatment in Israel’s criminal justice system that handles Jews one way and Palestinians another. In January 2007, it published a report titled “Defending Palestinian Prisoners: A Report on the Status of Defense Lawyers in Israeli Courts” in which it explained obstacles lawyers face in representing Palestinians in military and civil courts. They’re hampered by military orders, Israeli laws, and prison procedures that prevent them from adequately helping clients – from their time of arrest through detention, trial, imprisonment, appeal, and other constraints against justice…

The Spider’s Egg
Chris Floyd
…It’s really quite simple and, to my mind, self-evident: the “official” story of what happened on September 11, 2001, is not a complete or accurate account. (We should of course speak of official stories, because there have been several shifting, contradictory scenarios offered by the great and the good in the six years since the attack. However, for clarity’s sake, we’ll stick with the singular for now, and will assume — as the entire media and political establishment does — that the report by the Hamilton-Kean 9/11 Commission is the final “official” version.) To put it plainly, this official account is riddled with holes: unexplained inconsistencies, unprecedented occurrences, astounding coincidences, mysterious lacunae, and deliberate obfuscations. It is, in fact, a more improbable “conspiracy theory” than many of those suggested by the much-derided “9/11 truth movement.”…

Afghan Resistance Statement
The Afghan Historical Background and the Impetuous Outburst of the British Ambassador
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
September 11, 2009 – In recent months, Mujahideen have dealt a crushing blow at American and British forces in all parts of our country. As a result, hundreds of invading soldiers have lost their lives. The graph of military capability and war tactics of the invaders has lost its splendor and credibility in the eyes of the public of their countries. Still, they have recently resorted to image-boosting propaganda and assertions in order to manipulate the views of the public of the world in their favor and make up for the setbacks they have faced in the field. In this context, we can refer to the assertions of the British Ambassador in Kabul who says that the British soldiers will remain in Afghanistan for one generation. The best and reasonable retort to the outburst of the British Ambassador would be no more than that he should go through the history and the historical background of the Afghans once again. Any invading power which has made aggression against this land, has faced ultimate defeat…

Eight years since 9/11
The pretext for a historic shift in world politics
Patrick Martin
September 11, 2009 – …There is no doubt 9/11 marked a watershed in terms of the policies of American imperialism. The Bush administration, with full support from Democrats and Republicans in Congress, placed the United States on a war footing. Each new outrage—invasions, torture, kidnappings, concentration camps, domestic spying, flouting of constitutional norms—was justified by the all-purpose argument that “9/11 changed everything.” Within a month of the attacks, the United States had attacked Afghanistan and within three months, the Taliban had been overthrown and a new US-backed regime installed in Kabul. Only six months after 9/11, the Bush administration made a final decision to go to war against Iraq, and the White House had issued orders to the CIA to torture Al Qaeda prisoners to extract the necessary “evidence” of a nonexistent link between Saddam Hussein and the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington….

Death and Dying in the Age of No Change’s Non War
It’s Time to be Impolite About Afghanistan
By RON JACOBS
September 11, 2009 – In Germany, Chancellor Merkel defends a murderous attack on civilians siphoning fuel from two stuck oil tankers, telling her countrymen that the war in Afghanistan is not really a war at all. In Washington, Bush administration holdover Robert Gates (whose role in carrying on the mission of the Empire is clearer by the day) tells the press that Washington will not “abandon” Afghanistan or Pakistan. In the White House, the current set of deciders discusses how many more troops to send into the mountains and plains of Afghanistan to fight an enemy in Chancellor Merkel’s non-war while they add private mercenaries working for the dollar in their other zone of occupation, Iraq. The occupying soldiers have suffered more casualties in the Afghan non-war this past year than ever before. Yet, the big fool says to push on. The phrase from Tacitus comes to mind with only a slight modification. “They make desolation,” he wrote. “and call it peace.” In Afghanistan, they make desolation and call it freedom…

Obama Administration Moves to Keep Terror Watch-List Data Strictly Hush-Hush
Tom Burghardt, Antifascist Calling…
September 11, 2009 – During his 2008 run for the presidency, Senator Barack Obama promised to reverse the Bush regime’s pathological penchant for secrecy and the illegal programs that flourished in darkness like so many poisonous mushrooms. Administration backpedaling on promises to end the more onerous features of the Bush years betray, not so much Obama’s duplicity but rather, the naïve and misplaced hope by his supporters that a centrist Democrat beholden to the corporate pirates and militarists who rule the roost, would actually do things any differently. In areas of critical importance to civil libertarians, the Democratic regime continues to beef up Bushist programs and heighten government secrecy while limiting public accountability, particularly where the intelligence and security apparatus is concerned…

My rights, my remedy
Ahmed Moor
September 11, 2009 – The occupation looms large over everything in Palestine. Men with guns patrol your neighborhoods, detain your family and neighbors and dictate exactly when you can leave your house. There are days when you can’t get to school or go to the beach on your rutted roads, and most of the people you know are poor. You learn before long that the men with guns are Jews — and the people living in the beautiful homes on the hills behind barbed wire are Jews. The language on your milk carton is Hebrew. Not long after that, you begin to ask why things are the way they are. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “Zionism” as “an international movement originally for the establishment of a Jewish national or religious community in Palestine and later for the support of modern Israel.” While the word “Palestine” appears in that definition, the word “Palestinian” is noticeably absent. Zionists will argue that there were no Palestinians, as such and that the Merriam-Webster dictionary is not guilty of any omission or historical elision. Zionists miss the point…

SONIC WEAPONS USED IN IRAQ POSITIONED AT CONGRESSIONAL TOWNHALL MEETINGS IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY
By Miriam Raftery
September 11, 2009 – “Long-range acoustic devices [LRADs] for crowd control can be extremely dangerous. These are used in Iraq to control insurgents. They can cause serious and lasting harm to humans…We want to know WHY our Sheriff Dept has this weapon,” Sal Magallanez of San Diego-based Liberty One Radio said in an e-mail sent to East County Magazine, prompting a joint investigation. The device was stationed by San Diego County Sheriff deputies at a recent town hall forum hosted by Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) in Spring Valley and at a subsequent town hall with Congressman Darrell Issa (R-San Diego). The Davis Rally drew an estimated 1,300-1,500 people, including vocal conservative and liberal protest groups…

FLASHBACK: Likud Party Discovers Brazilian Artist Latuff
Anis Hamadeh
September 11, 2009 – …It is a funny detail that in the Likud article about Latuff there is the suggestion to complain to the Brazilian embassy. The idea behind it is that governments should control their artists, a kind of Middle Ages notion of art. (Will they call for attacking Brazil next?) Obviously, the writers of the article above are completely helpless, on the one hand, and fully unaware of the fact that Latuff’s images are reactions on Israel’s massive crimes, on the other. This blindness unfortunately is encouraged and affirmed by Israel’s friends, like the USA or Germany. They don’t intervene, so Israel does not realize that its measures towards Arabs have from the beginning been racist and brutal…

But They Come Back to Plant: A Farmer’s Tale
by Marryam Haleem
September 11, 2009 – …But still he worked. And in 2008 he planted his land with many types of vegetables. This time the Israeli tanks bulldozed the farm a few weeks before harvest. And they never stopped. For during the 2009 Massacre of Gaza they destroyed his land again. It was planted with cabbage and other vegetables. They destroyed the whole land as well as the water motor. So now the farm is nothing. They cannot plant because there is no water to plant with. That’s how it is in Beit Hanoun. The farmers sow the seeds of wholesome provision–for themselves and their families and their people. And the Israeli tanks destroy it. So the farmers come back to plant. And the tanks come back to destroy it again. And the farmers come back to plant…

If they can carry on “selective killings” of Palestinians, and carpet Beirut with tons of bombs murdering hundreds of civilians, what is the big deal about “neutralizing” one cartoonist in Brazil? US poverty rate hits 11-year high
By Shannon Jones
September 11, 2009 – Poverty in the United States climbed to 13.2 percent in 2008, up from 12.5 percent in 2007, the highest level since 1997. The increase came as millions of workers lost their jobs in the first year of the worst economic slump since the Great Depression. Meanwhile, median household income hit its lowest level since 1997, while the number of people without health insurance rose. The data was contained in the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey released on Thursday…

Iraqis turn to private schools amid charges of corruption
By Sahar Issa
September 10, 2009 — Iraqi parents who’re fed up with corrupt teachers and neglected public schools are sending their kids to a place that Saddam Hussein banned: private school. Six years ago, before the U.S.-led invasion ousted Saddam’s dictatorship, the country didn’t have a single private school. Over the past two years, the number has more than doubled, from 66 to 175. That trend says as much about diminishing respect for Iraq’s public education system as it does about Iraqis’ growing enthusiasm for the new schools, which usually open in rented homes…
