Afghanistan: Further evidence of massive electoral fraud
By James Cogan
September 8, 2009 – mid widespread evidence of fraud, the Afghan presidential election has become a political debacle for the US-led occupation. While President Hamid Karzai appears on the brink of officially achieving an absolute majority, the final results could take weeks as electoral officials deal with hundreds of complaints. Even if Karzai is finally declared the winner, the Obama administration may decide to dispense with his administration. On Sunday, the Karzai-appointed head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), Daud Ali Najafi, announced that just over five million votes were cast, meaning that no more than 30 to 35 percent of eligible voters took part. Of the 3.69 million votes counted, Karzai had won 48.6 percent, with his closest rival, Abdullah Abdullah, trailing on 31.7 percent. If Karzai gains over 50 percent, no second-round run-off will take place…

Cartoonist Carlos Latuff: “It is easier to break the Israeli bars than the Palestinian will”
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine -PFLP
September 8, 2009 – Neda al-Watan, the PFLP’s Arabic-language newspaper published monthly in the West Bank and Gaza, conducted an interview with Brazilian cartoonist and artist Carlos Latuff, who is well known for his graphics and cartoons in support of the Palestinian struggle, for its September 2009 issue… As an internationalist I believe that imperialism and capitalism are our common enemies. In my recent trip to Jordan and Lebanon, I had opportunity to visit Palestinian refugee camps and I was surprised how similar they are to the slums in Rio de Janeiro, even being very distant from South America, with different languages, traditions and religions. In the end, poverty and misery are universal languages, and the class struggle too. That’s why I believe in and support struggles of liberation in Palestine and everywhere, because the suffering is the same in Gaza or Sri Lanka. We are all human beings, brothers and sisters…

Zionism for Dummies
By William James Martin
September 8, 2009 – … One thing is certain: Israel is not the victim, as it is constantly screaming, but the victimizer. What then is the conflict all about? What is the theme that runs through the entire history of Zionism? It is about the ongoing program of Zionism to destroy the Palestinians as a people and to assume possession of their ancestral land. There are Zionists who would settle for a two state solution and a withdrawal of the Israel presence to the 1967 borders allowing a mini-Palestinian state on the remaining 22% of Palestine. But the reality on the ground is that Israel has expanded beyond the point of retreat with 300,000 settlers in the West Bank, 183,000 in East Jerusalem, as of this writing, with 200 or more settlements in the West Bank some twice the size of Manhattan containing their own, schools, universities, shopping malls and the billions of dollars of invested infrastructure, both private and public, and a segregated, for-Jews-only, highway system, 300 miles long, cutting up the West Bank with Palestinians imprisoned between these disjoint concrete and asphalt barriers. But whatever the views of these moderate Zionists, who call for contraction to the ’67 borders, the dynamics of Israel is and has always been expansion. The centrifugal forces pushing the expansion are multivaried and complicated. They are religious, they are military, they are for want of security, they are from want of power for its own sake, but they are persistent and they have an entire century of ! momentum and a century of Zionism on the move…

A Bum Wrap ---- Burying Ted Kennedy with the Israeli flag
Franklin Lamb
September 8, 2009 – … The plan was to wrap Ted Kennedy’s casket, side by side with the American flag, each flag to cover roughly half of Ted’s casket during Kennedy’s internationally broadcast funeral, which was even watched live in Dahiyeh, Beirut’s southern suburbs. Only the lobby’s continuing exploitation of the Holocaust and ADL’s unauthorized use of the image of Yasser Arafat to demonize him and raise millions to fund illegal settlement expansion, did Foxman see such a terrific chance to hype brand Zionism. This time by linking it in perpetuity to the Kennedy mystique and the Arlington Cemetery eternal flame. Wrapping Kennedy in the Israeli flag for history would no doubt give a boost to Israel’s preferred historical narrative and the Israeli flag which has increasingly come to represent virulent Zionism and its crimes. AIPAC claims the well intentioned project to wrap Kennedy in the Star of Davidt was no more than another gesture for the memory of a friend of the Jewish people. Perhaps Abe saw his initiative as a return tribute for Ted’s thoughtfulness during the November 6, 1995 funeral for Yitzak Rabin on Mount Herzl (renamed for the founder of modern Zionism, Hungarian Binyamin Ze’ev (Theodore) Herzl, who had never set foot in Palestine, from its ancient expunged Arabic name “Jabal Assalam” meaning ‘Peace Mountain”) On that day Senator Kennedy sprinkled a cup of soil from his two brothers, John and Robert’s, gravesites at Arlington Cemetery on Rabin’s, as! a gestu re of respect. Despite some intense lobbying, the Kennedy family graciously declined the Foxman-Aipac offer and Ted’s coffin carried only the American flag…

According to Department of Justice files, at least one did, noted Mother Jones associate editor Daniel Schulman on Tuesday morning. The revelation was torn from documents relative to the prosecution of Blackwater Worldwide guards involved in a 2007 Baghdad massacre that left 17 dead…

Spanish judge resumes torture case against six senior Bush lawyers
Andy Worthington
September 8, 2009 – The Spanish newspaper Público reported exclusively on Saturday that Judge Baltasar Garzón is pressing ahead with a case against six senior Bush administration lawyers for implementing torture at Guantánamo. Back in March, Judge Garzón announced that he was planning to investigate the six prime architects of the Bush administration’s torture policies — former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales; John Yoo, a former lawyer in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, who played a major role in the preparation of the OLC’s notorious “torture memos”; Douglas Feith, the former undersecretary of defense for policy; William J. Haynes II, the Defense Department’s former general counsel; Jay S. Bybee, Yoo’s superior in the OLC, who signed off on the August 2002 “torture memos”; and David Addington, former Vice President Dick Cheney’s Chief of Staff…

After being attacked in Old City by Jewish extremists, members of the Armenian clergy face expulsion
Maisa Abu Ghazaleh for PNN
September 8, 2009 – A group of Jewish extremists attacked on Sunday afternoon two young Armenians and destroyed a cross near the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in East Jerusalem’s Old City. Israeli settlers such as these have attacked for years members of the clergy in the Armenian Quarter. Today the Armenians who were assaulted Sunday are not being protected, but rather expelled. The Jerusalem Center for Social and Economic Rights today denounced the attack, just prior the Israeli-controlled municipality issuing orders to shut down the center for another year…

Israel’s laws of persecution
Nimer Sultany
September 8, 2009 – Two cases brought before Israeli courts last week revealed the attitude of the establishment towards Palestinian Arab citizens of the state. One shows how Palestinian citizens are treated as victims of police brutality, and the second shows how they are regularly victimised because of their opposition to injustice. In the first, a policeman who shot and killed an Arab citizen in 2006 was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment. The unbearable leniency of the sentence is more evidence of the total disregard for Arab life inside Israel, where ethnicity of the victim is a de facto mitigating circumstance in the case of Israel’s Palestinian citizens. Indeed, this was the only case in which any policeman or soldier was indicted since the mass protests of October 2000, in spite of the fact that about 40 citizens were killed during this period…

Shock Therapy
Did Lehman Brothers Fall or Was It Pushed?
By ELLEN BROWN
September 8, 2009 – … If Lehman was indeed sacrificed, who pushed it and to what end? Some critics point to Henry Paulson and his cronies at Goldman Sachs, Lehman’s arch rival. Goldman certainly came out on top after Lehman’s demise, but there are other possibilities as well, involving more global players. The month after Lehman collapsed, Gordon Brown and the EU leaders called for using the financial crisis as an opportunity to radically enhance the regulatory power of global institutions. Brown spoke of “a new global financial order,” echoing the “new world order” referred to by globalist banker David Rockefeller when he said in 1994…

September 8, 2009 — Four U.S. soldiers were killed by roadside bombs Tuesday, the deadliest day for American forces in Iraq since combat troops pulled back from urban areas more than two months ago. Gaza offensive may cost Palestinians four billion dlrs: UN
AFP
September 8, 2009 – The Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip in December and January caused four billion dollars of losses to the Palestinian economy, a UN think tank said Tuesday. Overall, the losses represent “three times the size of the Gaza economy,” said Mahmud Elkhafif, coordinator of the UN Conference and Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) assistance programme for the Palestinians. “Initial estimates put the economy’s direct and indirect losses at around four billion dollars (2.8 billion euros), including the costs associated with cushioning the humanitarian impact of the military campaign of around one billion dollars,” UNCTAD said in a report…

September 8, 2009 – It seems that everyday there is yet another controversy surrounding private military firm Blackwater International, now known as Xe. Despite the fact that the company is associated with corruption, criminal charges, and negligence, the United States State Department has extended its contract in Iraq. The government in Iraq, however, has said long before it wants the company out after a shootout in Baghdad resulted in the deaths of 17 civilians. Given all this, how is the US Government able to extend the contract and why are they doing this given the tainted image of the company?…

In Support of the Free Gaza Movement
By former Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad
September 8, 2009 – 1. We all remember the brutal Israeli attacks against Gaza last year. Many of us were outraged by the killings of some 1,300 Gazan Palestinian, men, women, the disabled, the children, the sick and the maimed. Hospitals and schools were destroyed. 2. The condemnation of this brutal assault had forced the Israelis to stop the massive retaliation against alleged Hamas rocket attacks against Israel. 3. Many of the rich countries had pledged billions in aid for the rebuilding of Gaza. 4. After that, things became quiet. There was hardly any report in the press on what was happening. I suppose most people assume that the reconstruction of Gaza was proceeding apace…

Panel Orders Recount as Tally Gives Karzai 54%
By CARLOTTA GALL and SHARON OTTERMAN, NYTimes
September 8, 2009 – The United Nations-backed commission serving as the ultimate arbiter of the Afghan elections announced Tuesday that it had found “clear and convincing evidence of fraud” in a number of polling stations and ordered a partial recount even as election officials declared that President Hamid Karzai had won a majority of the vote. With 91.6 percent of the polling stations counted, the officials said, Mr. Karzai had won 54.1 percent of the vote, and his main challenger, the former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah, won 28.3 percent. The tally, if certified, would mean that Mr. Karzai would be declared the victor without the need for a runoff because he would won more than 50 percent of the vote. But international election officials and observers immediately cast those figures in doubt…
