The Truth Of Iraq’s City Of Deformed Babies
Sky News
An Iraqi doctor has told Sky News the number of babies born with deformities in the heavily-bombed area of Fallujah is still on the increase. Fifteen months ago a Sky News investigation revealed growing numbers of children being born with defects in Fallujah. Concerns were that the rise in deformities may have been linked to the use of chemical weapons by US forces. We recently returned to find out the current situation and what has happened to some of the children we featured. In May last year we told the story of a three-year-old girl called Fatima Ahmed who was born with two heads…

Attacked by the Israeli navy: a shelled Palestinian fishing trawler is “completely destroyed”
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
On August 31st, the Israeli navy attacked a Palestinian fishing trawler with what is reported to have been shelling, causing the boat to light afire. At the time of the attack, the fishermen were in waters near the north of Gaza. The Palestinian fishermen say that they were within the (arbitrarily-imposed by Israel, solely at Israeli authorities’ whim) new 3 mile fishing limit (although under Oslo, they have the right to venture 20 miles out)…

Don’t Criticize Israel, You Anti-Semite
Joharah Baker
According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, the definition of anti-Semitism is, “hostility towards or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic or racial group.” This should strike everyone as odd, since Jews are hardly the only Semitic people roaming this earth. Most oddly enough, we Arabs are also a Semitic people who speak a Semitic language, unlike many Jews who do not. Still, over the years, for whatever reason, the term “anti-Semitic” has been reserved exclusively for attacks on Jews, the range of which has become dangerously broad…

Iraqi woman fears execution, can’t stop thinking of gallows
Arwa Damon, CNN
Samar Saed Abdullah’s entire body trembles as she speaks about her impending execution. She thinks of the gallows room, the noose around her neck and that moment when she will take her final breath. “My life is meaningless,” she said, choking on her tears. “I can’t think of anything else. The other women, we try to help each other, but we cannot escape the reality that we are on death row and they can take us at any second.”… Samar was sentenced to death by hanging for being an accessory to murder in the killings of her uncle, aunt and cousin — slayings that she says were carried out at their home by her husband-to-be, who remains on the loose. She maintains that she is innocent, and there are disturbing questions about her conviction…She was tried and convicted in a single day: August 15, 2005. Court documents obtained by CNN read that “the court discussed the case file with her and she said that all that she had confessed came as a result of duress and torture.” Under Iraqi law, the court should have investigated her claim that she confessed under torture. But it did not…

Is it Anti-Semitic to Defend Palestinian Human Rights?
Jewish Opposition to Zionism
Edward C. Corrigan
All across Canada and in the United States, there is an organized campaign to suppress criticism of Israeli policies toward the Palestinians. The campaign is especially strong on university campuses where many voices have been raised in support of human rights for the Palestinians. One such example is the attempt to suppress the Public Interest Research Group, founded by Ralph Nader, at the University of Ottawa for their support for Palestinian human rights. Similar anti-Palestinian campaigns have occurred at many universities in Canada including the University of Toronto, the University of Western Ontario and York University…

Afghan War’s Blowback for India’s Children?
J. Sri Raman
Children born with abnormally enlarged or small heads, disproportionately short arms and legs, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other complications. Increasing instances of infertility among women. A spurt in cases of lung cancer and intestinal ulcer. Punjab, a state in India bordering Pakistan, has reason to be concerned about this scary picture emerging from surveys recently carried out in some of its areas. Not only Punjab, however. According to a section of the researchers particularly concerned with the cases of birth deformities, Punjab may be paying with the health of its people for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. More precisely, depleted uranium reportedly used in wars in these countries may be the cause of the deformities and disorders on the rise in India’s northwestern state, according to a team based in the city of Faridkot..

Gordon Brown reaffirms UK commitment to Afghan war
By Chris Marsden
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to the war in Afghanistan during a surprise visit to the country Saturday. He did so in the face of mounting popular opposition to the war, with polls indicating that two-thirds of respondents want Britain to leave Afghanistan immediately. Brown’s main political concern during his trip was to justify Britain’s ongoing participation in the occupation, initially by responding to criticisms from the Conservative opposition and the media that his government has under-resourced the army…

A Look At The Labor Movement in Iran
By Faramarz Dadvar
…In the past few years, labor activists have organized independent unions. Their efforts have been a response to privatization, in which new owners, searching for quick profits, closed down many companies. That, in turn, caused a dramatic increase in layoffs and difficult conditions for workers, who endured longer periods of pay delays and forced temporary employment at lower wages… In the recent demonstrations against the presidential election in June and July 2009, organized labor solidly supported the people’s demands for free elections, civil liberties, political democracy, and economic justice..

IRAQ: Monthly death toll highest in over a year
Ned Parker, Los Angeles Times
Violence in Iraq produced the highest death toll in 13 months as August was marred by a series of suicide bombings in northern Iraq and a high-profile attack on two government ministries in Baghdad that stoked concerns that security was deteriorating with the removal of most U.S. forces from Iraqi cities and the approach of national elections in January. A total of 456 people were killed in attacks in August, including 393 civilians, a number far lower than the figures at the height of Iraq’s civil war in 2006 and 2007 when Iraq’s monthly death toll sometimes soared past 2,000…

James Hider
In a crowded conference hall in Kabul, hundreds of angry tribal elders and local officials from southern Afghanistan gathered today to protest against what they dubbed massive electoral fraud that robbed entire districts of their votes and allocated them to the incumbent president, Hamid Karzai… Hamidullah Tokhy, a tribal elder from Kandahar province in the south, whose governor is Mr Karzai’s brother, said: “How is it that in a district which a governor can only visit once every two years, where it’s too dangerous for the police to go, where even Nato can’t fly, how come there were 20,000 votes collected?”…

Obama formalizes Bush policy on digital searches and seizures
By Tom Eley
The Obama administration disclosed on August 27 that it will carry on Bush administration policies that allowed the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to seize and search international travelers’ laptop computers, cellular phones, cameras, and other electronic devices, even in the absence of suspicion of criminal activity. Two DHS directives made public Thursday formalize operational practices established by the Bush administration to carry out searches of the personal digital instruments of travelers, US citizens or not, passing across US borders. By proclaiming that agents can confiscate any digital device that may contain “information,” even without suspicion of criminal activity, the directives amount to an open repudiation of the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition against unreasonable searches and seizures…
