Taliban and the bogey of terrorism
By Charles Ferndale
On Newsnight (Aug 20) while being interviewed by Gaven Esler, the US general incharge of the Afghan war, David Petraeus, said that the war was “not a war of choice”. He was echoing President Obama, Gordon Brown, British military officials and others. We in Britain are told constantly that NATO forces have to be there to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a training ground for terrorist attacks on our own soil… Afghanistan has not been an important planning area for any attacks on western countries and the Taliban have shown no inclination to conduct war against NATO countries outside Afghanistan (so far, but we seem to be doing our best to change their practices). They are freedom-fighters who want us out of their country. Would we be killing them if there were no oil and gas around the Caspian sea? General Petraeus said that the attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001 were planned in Afghanistan. This remark is disingenuous. Osama bin Laden may have been in Afghanistan at the time of the attacks, but had he been in Washington, New York, London, Paris or Hamburg, his whereabouts would have made no difference to the outcome. The perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks resided in Germany, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and were trained (in part) in flying schools set up (some allege, for this very purpose) by the CIA in Florida, US…

It’s Tents for Most Homeless Families in Gaza, Prefabricated Huts for the Lucky Few
By Mohammed Omer
DESPITE THE parade of various international diplomats and aid workers surveying the destruction in Gaza, virtually nothing has changed since Israel ended in January its Operation Cast Lead assault—peversely named after a line in a children’s Hannukah poem. Israel launched its assault on Dec. 27, 2008, during the Jewish religious festival. Homeless families are distressed at the lack of progress in providing adequate and safe shelter, despite pledges made by international donors at a conference held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt in early March…

Archbishop Tutu: “Arabs paying the price of Germany’s crimes”
Saed Bannoura – IMEMC
In an Interview with Haaretz newspaper, Archbishop Desmond Tutu stated that Israel must learn from the Holocaust that it cannot gain security thought fences, walls and guns. Archbishop Tutu was commenting of statement made by Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in Germany, in which he said that “Israel should always defend itself”. Tutu said that “the regime in South Africa never managed to get security from the barrel of the gun, but got security after recognizing and respecting every person”…

Still bleeding after all these days
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
Mas’oud’s screams were proof enough of his agony. He tried lying down, sitting up, sitting sideways, but the pain just worsened, his screams louder. The worst of it lasted 10 minutes, subsiding only slowly after a pain killer injection. Sharing his room, a youngish man with good English and many questions and observations. And the young Sari, paralyzed for life after Israeli soldiers shot he and his cousin repeatedly three years ago. Amazingly, as I repeatedly see here in Palestine, what began as a morose visit, disheartened by Mas’oud pain and the crushed life of Sari, ended in conversation and laughter, temporarily distracting all from worries always present…

Bill would give president emergency control of Internet
Declan McCullagh
Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet. They’re not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft of S.773 (excerpt), which still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency…

Hey NY Times, How About the “Palestinian Hanging” Torture?
Ralph Lopez
It’s pretty clear the media strategy in this torture thing is to limit the coverage to the more milquetoast-ee tortures like pouring cold water on guys and making it look like they were trying to be careful about it […] Hey New York Times, what about the Palestinian Hanging? You need look no further than Major General Anthony Taguba’s definitive report to find out about it. You are hung with your arms behind you often causing dislocation of the arms from the sockets. A tweaked version was to put your feet on an electrified drum through which to deliver shocks. Since Obama will not release the torture photos, this is what it looks like. This is the position in which al-Jamadi died, the prisoner in the famous Abu Ghraib photo of his body packed in ice. The torture causes pulmonary damage. As the guards released the shackles and lowered al-Jamadi, a witness said, blood gushed from his mouth “as if a faucet had been turned on.” Then you’ve got the plain bloody murder, but we won’t talk about that, will we? The media has ignored the large number of interrogation subjects who were “interrogated” until lights out. At least 51 of these have died since Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld was informed of the abuses at Abu Ghraib on January 16, 2004…

Revealed: Docs Describe in Extraordinary Detail Process of ‘Rendition,’ Torture
Jason Leopold
Among the treasure trove of documents released Monday related to the CIA’s detention and torture program is a 20-page background paper that for the first time describes in extraordinary detail the process of “rendition” and the torture prisoners are then subjected to when they are flown to “black site” prisons. The document was turned over to the ACLU in response to the civil liberties group’s Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the government late Monday evening along with numerous others, including previously undisclosed Justice Department legal opinions…

Palestinian MPs and Cabinet members STILL in Israeli jails after illegal abduction
Mary Rizzo
Israel has many thousands of Palestinian political prisoners locked up in their jails. Men, women, even children are deprived of their freedom and forced to live in a cage precisely because of their love of justice and freedom. Among these prisoners are 21 Palestinian Members of Parliament (Palestinian Legislative Council) and 8 Cabinet Ministers. Shocking but true, these people are still locked away in prison cells three years after their night-time abduction as if they were criminals! In what country would this be condoned or permitted? The international community exhibits a deafening silence, but let’s not forget these men and women who lost their liberty because their people voted them into office against the desires of Israel. We have to keep these prisoners in the public eye, let them know they are not abandoned and that their freedom will come…

August deadliest month for US in Afghanistan
By ROBERT H. REID (AP)
An American service member died Friday when his vehicle struck a bomb in eastern Afghanistan, making August the deadliest month for U.S. forces in the nearly eight-year war. The grim milestone comes as the top U.S. commander prepares to submit his assessment of the conflict — a report expected to trigger intense debate on the Obama administration’s strategy in an increasingly unpopular war. The latest death was reported as Afghan officials announced an 80 percent increase in the number of major fraud allegations submitted after last week’s disputed presidential election — a sign of the deep challenges facing the U.S. and its allies in shoring up a legitimate Afghan government capable of withstanding the Taliban insurgency, corruption and drug trafficking…

Remember that war?
The Common Ills
Remember that war? Whatever happened to that? I heard a lot of people died. I also heard that there was no end in sight. I don’t seem to hear about that war at all anymore. I remember promises of it coming to an end, even talk of a troop withdrawal. But I don’t think the war ended. Still, I can’t seem to find anything about it anymore. Occasionally on the news I see stories about more deaths, more bombings, and even another hostage or two. However, there’s no talk about the war itself, and certainly no talk about when it’s going to end… Remind you of that War on Terror? The war that President Barack Obama promised to end. The war that the Democratic party promised to stop – even going so far as to swear to take congressional action to end it as soon as possible. Instead, Obama and the Democrats have decided to continue occupying foreign soil…

Picasso painting found in Iraq ‘is fake’
Ninemsn
A Picasso painting that Iraqi police proudly announced they had found this week appears to be a fake, officials at the Louvre in Paris and the National Museum in Kuwait have told AFP. Officers had said that the painting was stolen during Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990, but a source at the museum in the oil-rich emirate said they had never housed such a work. “The national museum had no Picasso paintings before the Iraqi invasion,” the official said…

The Massacre of Muslim Civilians is always: ‘Self-Defence’ but never Terrorism
Yamin Zakaria
The Anglo-US-Israeli axis continues to market the murdering of Muslims civilians as the result of self-defence, through its media outlets. Any impartial observer seeing the carnage in Iraq, Lebanon and now in Gaza would conclude differently, because it is obvious who is being terrorised and slaughtered. Naturally, the gruesome images from Gaza have caused the ordinary masses in all parts of the world to take to the streets and protest; this is unprecedented in our recent history. It is disgusting to see the pro-Israeli commentators having the ‘chutzpah’ to claim that Israel has the higher moral grounds, whilst committing mass murder in the concentration camp of Gaza. The sheer barbarism shown by Israel has full endorsement from the US and British governments…

US Interrogators Back Torture Probe
Jason Leopold
Support for a wide-ranging criminal investigation into the Bush administration’s use of torture has grown to include a former top FBI interrogator and a career military intelligence officer with more than two decades of experience conducting interrogations. Jack Cloonan, a former FBI security and counterterrorism expert who was assigned to the agency’s elite Bin Laden Unit, and Col. Steve Kleinman, a career military intelligence officer recognized as one of the Defense Department’s most effective interrogators, said ignoring clear-cut evidence of interrogation-related crimes would encourage more law-breaking in the future…

Big Brass Bull: Pentagon Deceit on Media Manipulation Confirmed
Chris Floyd
A few days ago, we noted the revelations by Stars and Stripes that the Pentagon was using a shadowy PR firm to identify the political leanings of journalists trying to cover the “Good War” in Afghanistan (as well as the “Forgotten War” in Iraq). The idea, clearly, was to encourage and reward “pro-war” reporters while planting a big red flag on the backs of any writers considered less than gung-ho about the imperial bloodshed in Muslim lands….

Endless Ramblings. 3 – Fasting & Ramadan.
Layla Anwar, Uncensored Arabwomanblues
…So that got me thinking about Fasting and Ramadan. I amused myself with some of these thoughts as I walked back to my apartment… I said to myself — okay, so all those who fast are much better humans than I am. Good for them. All the militias in Baghdad with their stinking beards and silver rings dripped in blood and who are presumably fasting are much better than me. All the thieves and corrupt sons of bitches in the Iraqi government who are fasting are much better than me. All the Muslim leaders who are observing Fast and enslaving their people are better than me…

The Israeli shooting left me paralyzed
Eva Bartlett
I’ve had more operations than I can remember. My most recent operations are on the bedsores on my backside; doctors have given up any hope of surgery to allow me to walk again. Three years ago, I was visiting an aunt in Bureij, central Gaza. She lives in the eastern area. Her house is about 500m from the border (Green Line) fence. A cousin and I were outside, on land next to her home. We often sat out there…

Non-violent action in Gaza
Sameh Habeeb and Ayman Quader
he Gaza Strip has lost 1,400 lives and a further 5,000, mostly civilians, have been maimed and wounded in the latest attack waged by the Israeli government. This came on top of an illegal, yet relentless siege that has dragged on and on for over two years, preventing 1.5 million Gazans from having access to the basic necessities of life, and to the wider world. You might well ask how young people respond to this blockade. Some of course resort to violence. But others have chosen a different tack…

Reproducing failure
Khaled Amayreh
Having utterly failed to get Israel to freeze Jewish settlement expansion in the West Bank, especially in East Jerusalem, the Obama administration is now asking Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) to resume peace talks as soon as possible. The US State Department said this week it was getting closer to winning the agreements of both Israel and the PA to resume talks. Spokesperson Ian Kelly told reporters that the “process of laying the groundwork for Israeli Palestinian-peace talks is moving closer to fruition”…

Ahmadinejad calls for prosecution of Iran’s opposition leaders
By Borzou Daragahi
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad demanded the prosecution of opposition leaders today, raising the nation’s political temperature just a day and a half after Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei sought to cool tempers in a conciliatory speech. In a pre-sermon speech at weekly prayers in the capital, Ahmadinejad did not explicitly name his rivals Mir-Hossein Mousavi or Mehdi Karroubi, but left little doubt he was speaking about them in calling for the punishment of the “masterminds” who allegedly spurred weeks of unrest that followed his widely disputed June 12 reelection…

‘United’ Jerusalem Has Two Faces
By Mel Frykberg
Israel says “united” Jerusalem will be the eternal capital of the Jewish state. However, a quick walk across the Green Line which marks the international border dividing the two parts of the city reveals a city very much divided. Most of West Jerusalem is clean, well cared for and far more opulent than the poorer east. The streets of East Jerusalem are filled with litter, piles of uncollected garbage, potholes and vermin…Under international law East Jerusalem is occupied, and considered part of the Palestinian West Bank. Following the 1967 Arab-Israeli war Israel annexed East Jerusalem, and systematically implemented a system to Judaise that part of the city…

New Files Prove Pentagon Is Profiling Reporters
Think Progress
This week, Stars and Stripes revealed that the Pentagon had hired a controversial contractor to screen journalists seeking to embed with U.S. forces. The Rendon Group determines whether reporters’ coverage “was ‘positive,’ ‘negative’ or ‘neutral’ compared to mission objectives.” The Pentagon’s decision was especially shocking in light of Rendon’s sordid past: The group personally set up the Iraqi National Congress and helped install Ahmad Chalabi as leader, whose main goal — “pressure the United States to attack Iraq and overthrow Saddam Hussein” — Rendon helped facilitate…

AFGHANISTAN: Seven years after CIA abduction, prisoner still held without charge
Meris Lutz
Seven years after being abducted from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, by the CIA and shipped to the U.S. air base in Bagram, Afghanistan, Haji Pacha Wazir was hoping he would finally be free. The Afghan government had cleared him for release, and a recent court ruling allowed him to petition his case in a U.S. federal court. But Wazir’s petition was dismissed based on “lack of jurisdiction,” despite the fact that Wazir, an Afghan national, has been in the sole custody of the U.S. government since his arrest, according to the nonprofit organization representing him…

LEBANON: Shattered Camp Revives Under Military Eyes
By Ray Smith
Palestinian refugees at Nahr Al-Bared in North Lebanon are living under tight military siege two years after a war destroyed the refugee camp. It has now become a test case for a new approach in Lebanon’s security policy towards Palestinian refugee camps. The 200,000 square metres camp is located on the Mediterranean coast, about 16 kilometres north of Tripoli. Adjacent to the highway leading from Beirut to the Syrian border, Nahr Al-Bared is surrounded by the villages of Akkar, a neglected region dominated by Sunni Muslims and Maronite Christians…

Early and Current Fears about Vaccine Dangers
by Stephen Lendman
Given today’s hysteria over a non-existent Swine Flu threat and possible mandating of experimental, untested, toxic, and likely bioengineered vaccines, it’s appropriate to review early fears about their dangers – when evidence first surfaced and concerns were raised. In 1920, Charles Michael Higgins’ “Horrors of Vaccination Exposed and Illustrated: Petition to the President to Abolish Compulsory Vaccination in Army and Navy” (now available in a new 2008 edition) issued a “Public Challenge to Health Departments” in citing “Deaths from Vaccination Denied and Concealed – More Deaths from Vaccination than from Smallpox”…
