The Fig Leaf.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
In 2003, someone said that the occupation of Iraq is the fig leaf that has undressed and uncovered all…and ever since I have not stopped seeing your ugly nakedness staring me in the face… Through the existence of this blog, I saw more of your ugliness… I wonder o’ Beloved, why has all this human filth fallen into your lap ? The filth of deceit, lies, hypocrisy, cruelty, brutality, indifference, sadism, insanity, treachery, greed, covetousness, jealousy, envy — a bundle of all the most bestial aspects have occupied you…

What to believe when reading the BBC
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
BBC does it again… not that I expected any better from the corporate news agency which has made a point of convoluting the truth about what happens in occupied Palestine. Apparently, BBC didn’t have a reporter in Gaza to get the wounded Palestinian’s story –the one shot through the chest in the incident; the one who happens to be an extremely poor farm labourer with 15 siblings and who was shot while working among vegetables. Apparently the BBC only had stock photos of Israeli soldiers and couldn’t be bothered commissioning the work of any of Gaza’s freelance photographers or established journalists to go to the Kamal Adwan hospital and take a photo of this man…

US death makes August tied as deadliest month in Afghanistan
WashingtonTV
A US soldier was killed on Thursday in a militant attack involving a roadside bomb and gunfire, while on patrol in southern Afghanistan, NATO said. The death brings to 44 the number of US troops killed in Afghanistan this month, pushing August into a tie with July as the deadliest months of the eight-year war, according to the Associated Press. However, with four days left in the month, August is likely to set a new record, said the agency…

Journalists’ Groups Protest over US Media Vetting in Afghanistan
International Federation of Journalists
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and United States journalists’ groups today condemned military vetting of journalists covering the Afghanistan conflict to see if they are sympathetic to the American cause. Journalists and media people seeking to travel under the protection of US armed forces to report on the escalating military operations in Afghanistan may be screened by a Washington public relations firm commissioned by the Pentagon to determine whether media coverage portrays the US military in a positive light…

Afghan war escalating in defiance of popular opposition
By James Cogan
A major increase in American and NATO troop numbers in Afghanistan is on the agenda in the wake of last week’s corrupt and illegitimate election in that country. The ballot—which witnessed a mass voter boycott—has underscored the widespread opposition within the country to the ongoing US-led military occupation. Over the coming weeks, General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of US and NATO occupation forces, is scheduled to present the White House with an assessment of the military and political situation. Defence Secretary Robert Gates stated on August 13 that the review will not include “specific recommendations or requests for more forces”. What it will include, however, has been largely leaked to the media by US military commanders and foreign policy analysts…

Water shortage threatens two million people in southern Iraq
Martin Chulov
A water shortage described as the most critical since the earliest days of Iraq’s civilisation is threatening to leave up to 2 million people in the south of the country without electricity and almost as many without drinking water. An already meagre supply of electricity to Iraq’s fourth-largest city of Nasiriyah has fallen by 50% during the last three weeks because of the rapidly falling levels of the Euphrates river, which has only two of four power-generating turbines left working. If, as predicted, the river falls by a further 20cm during the next fortnight, engineers say the remaining two turbines will also close down, forcing a total blackout in the city…

Video: Ex-Guantanamo inmate to sue
Aljazeera.net
An Afghan man detained for six-and-a-half years in Guantanamo Bay, the US military detention centre in Cuba, is to sue the US government, his lawyer has said. Major Eric Montalvo, the US military lawyer representing Mohammed Jawad, said the former detainee’s family will be suing for compensation in US courts. Jawad was released after his confession to throwing a hand grenade that wounded two US soldiers was rejected as having been coerced out of him through the use of torture. Jawad, who was released to members of his family on Monday, has said he was 12-years-old at the time of his arrest in Kabul, the Afghan capital, in December 2002…

Prison walls
Joy Ellison writing from al-Tuwani, occupied West Bank
“Nasser says hello,” the woman said as she stood in my doorway and smiled. I was barely able to choke out, “Say hello to him too.” Nasser, the woman’s husband, was in prison. He was arrested on 20 July during a peaceful demonstration in his West Bank village of al-Tuwani. He did nothing wrong, nothing but build a house on land he owns. A Palestinian need do nothing more to be treated like a criminal. For the last month, Nasser’s family has been waiting for him to come home…

CIA probe shields architects of US torture regime
By Bill Van Auken
The Obama administration’s release of a 2004 internal CIA report on torture and the announcement by the Justice Department of an extremely limited investigation into actions by individual interrogators is part of an elaborate attempt to cover up the scale of the crimes carried out under the Bush administration, while shielding its top figures from prosecution. While compelled by court order to release the CIA inspector general’s report in a case brought by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Obama administration substantially censored the document, blacking out 36 pages entirely and heavily redacting another 30 pages on the grounds of “national security.”…

Israel Says “Kiss My Ass” Obama Says “OK”
Irish4Palestine
Did You Really Think It Would Happen? Middle East Peace, a FAIR and EQUAL deal for Palestinians? Two words, “wise up.” Obama has been blowing bubbles up the arse of Arabs (and the rest of the world) for months now. And the mask has been slipping but now it’s fallen to the floor. The “Evil Had Landed” in England a few days ago and I watched Netanyahu the Chosen one parade like a puffed up peacock outside of number 10 Downing Street. And as soon as he had his face in front of the cameras he just couldn’t contain himself, he practically shouted with smirking glee when confirming the mighty “ass kissing” that had obviously occured inside “No Freeze in Jerusalem” and my personal favourite load of bollox “Jerusalem is not a settlement” and of course “Jerusalem is the Capital of Israel” This being the utter antithesis of the Obama policy for the Middle East Peace Plan, what retort do we hear from the “Whitehouse?”…

…Despite the British force seizing the insurgent stronghold in the Babaji area freeing 80,000 potential voters from Taliban control only 150 people turned up to vote, according to BBC figures. Since the launch of Operation Panther’s Claw in early July and up to polling day on Aug 20 the British have suffered 37 dead and an estimated 150 wounded in action in southern Afghanistan. Part of the operation’s aim had been to allow the local population to vote and 13 polling stations were set up within the district but these averaged just over 11 voters each…

‘I COME TO BURY TED KENNEDY, NOT TO PRAISE HIM’
Desertpeace
Watching CNN News last night report on the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy gave me the impression that a very great man has left the stage…. Looking back on his life’s work, one might get the impression that the man will soon be nominated for Sainthood. CNN even bothered to find the former, disgraced, wife of Nelson Mandela who spoke of Kennedy’s support of the anti-apartheid movement of South Africa…

US Copter Loses Ballot Boxes as Afghan Vote Count Moves Slowly Forward
Chinook Dropped 25 Ballot Boxes into the Mountains
Jason Ditz,
As the count for Afghanistan’s hotly disputed election trudges along at a snail’s pace, a bit of excitement happened when the US military admitted that it had misplaced 25 ballot boxes it was shipping from Paroon to Kabul. Actually it didn’t so much misplace them as it dropped them, off a helicopter, into what officials are describing as “the rugged mountains of Nuristan.”…
