Should the left call for Taliban victory?
Socialist Worker
…The following point cannot be stressed enough; whilst the U.S. remains in Afghanistan, economic and social development will not occur much beyond current levels. This in turn means that the Taliban, as a broad-based movement of poor farmers and lower clergy, is the face of anti-imperialist resistance in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. To put it another way, if we, as avowed anti-imperialists, intend to wait around for a resistance movement that agrees with us on every issue, including the need to fight the oppression of women, gays, racial and religious minorities, etc., we’ll be waiting a long time. The Taliban is the resistance in Afghanistan and we must support it, critically, but unreservedly… The Taliban are increasingly espousing a strong nationalist message and, in some cases, have substantially moderated their social conservatism in order to build a more broad-based and effective resistance movement…

US Is Picking & Choosing The Afghan Opium Trade Winners
By Steve Hynd
…accused war criminal and narco-warlord Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum has rejoined Karzai’s government from exile in Turkey. In 2001, according to Physicians for Human Rights, he and his men stuffed thousands of prisoners into metal containers, suffocating most and shooting any who survived. Because he was on the CIA’s payroll, the Bush administration discouraged any investigations even after the mass grave of the victims was discovered. Karzai trusts him to deliver more than 1 million Uzbeck votes in Thursday’s election….

World Can’t Be Changed Without Fighting Western Propaganda
By Andre Vltchek
…While we are busy trashing Cuba for human rights abuses (a few dozens of people in jail, many of whom would probably be charged with terrorism in the West, since they openly aim at overthrowing the constitution and the government) and China for Tibet (glorifying by all means the former religious feudal lord just because antagonizing and ostracizing China is the main goal of our foreign policy – an openly racist approach) there are millions of victims of our geopolitical interests rotting or already buried in Congo (DRC) and elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa, in West Papua, the Middle East, and elsewhere. Our human rights record (if we consider all human beings “human” and accept that violating the rights of a man, woman or child in Africa, Latin America, Middle East, Oceania or Asia is as deplorable as violating human rights in London, New York, or Melbourne) is so horrid – presently as in the past – that it is unimaginable that our citizens still could believe that our countries have some moral leverage and should be allowed to arbitrate and exercise moral judgment…

Huckabee Calls for Ethnic Cleansing of Palestinian Territories
Matthew Yglesias
…Huckabee’s moved on from his general support for settlements to a call to, I guess, deport the entire population of Palestine to someplace else: Speaking to a small group of foreign reporters in Jerusalem, Huckabee, seen as a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2012, said the international community should consider establishing a Palestinian state some place else. “The question is should the Palestinians have a place to call their own? Yes, I have no problem with that. Should it be in the middle of the Jewish homeland? That’s what I think has to be honestly assessed as virtually unrealistic.” In some ways, however, Huckabee is to be congratulated on his frankness. The implication of the policies of the Netanyahu administration, and of U.S.-based Jewish organizations that are pressing Barack Obama to back off America’s opposition to settlements, points exactly in the direction Huckabee is now espousing

The ROM Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit
Re/Mapping Identity, Culture, & Colonial Discourse
By Ali Mustafa
Even before the highly anticipated six-month, $3-million collaboration between the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and the Israeli Antiquities Authority (IAA) showcasing the Dead Sea Scrolls was officially launched in late June, the exhibit was already the subject of growing controversy. “Dead Sea Scrolls: Words that Changed the World,” as the exhibit is entitled, first attracted international attention in April when Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and executives at the ROM were each sent letters of protest from senior officials of the Palestinian Authority (PA) – signed by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khouloud Diabes, respectively – declaring that the scrolls were in fact illegally seized by Israel following its occupation and subsequent annexation of the West Bank in 1967. The PA not only called for the repatriation of the scrolls but further argued that they merely represent one example of possibly millions of other artifacts that have been systematically looted by Israel from occupied Palestinian territory over several decades, a message that has since been echoed by a chorus of supportive community groups who continue to organize weekly pickets outside of the ROM in protest….

IRAN: Despite newspaper closure, rape allegations continue
Borzou Daragahi
If Iran’s rulers thought shuttering a popular reformist newspaper would end an uproar over allegations of rape and abuse of inmates inside the nation’s prisons, they were sorely mistaken… A popular reformist website, Mowjcamp.com, also reported today on another case of sexual abuse inside prison. According to the website, when lawmakers inspected Tehran’s Evin Prison, one inmate identified by the initials A.B. stood up and began to speak out. He told the lawmakers that before being transferred to Evin Prison he had been held at the infamous Kahrizak detention center. There, he said, guards used their batons to rape him. He said he was still suffering and bleeding as a result of the injuries…

Guantánamo And The Courts (Part Three): Obama’s Continuing Shame
ANDY WORTHINGTON
In the first part of this three-part series examining the Guantánamo prisoners’ attempts to secure their release via the US courts, Andy Worthington, author of The Guantánamo Files, looked at how, after the Supreme Court’s ruling, in June 2008, that the prisoners had constitutionally guaranteed habeas corpus rights, the Bush administration lost 23 of the 26 cases reviewed in the District Courts. The second part examined the Obama administration’s record, in its first four months in office, revealing how the new government behaved as though Bush was still in power, obstructing the defense teams, angering judges, and humiliating itself in court, and this final part brings the story up to date, explaining how, incredibly, the Obama administration has learned nothing from its humiliation, and continues to present worthless and unwinnable cases to District Court judges, perpetuating the injustice at Guantánamo, to the dismay of those who thought that it would thoroughly repudiate the discredited policies of the Bush administration…

US forces to patrol northern Iraq?
The Common Ills
…The violence in northern Iraq is proving a bit of an embarrassment to Nouri and the US. So the answer is to deploy US troops into the region. You should be paying attention to this because, on a small-scale, it’s what then candidate for the Democratic Party presidential nomination Barack Obama told the New York Times would happen if violence increased in Iraq as the US began withdrawing (he called it that then). So if an increase in violence means the US gets sucked back in — even as Barry O’s lying to the VFW that the US is out of all Iraqi cities yesterday — you should really be paying attention to this because it is the get-out-of-jail card Barack used in 2007 to explain why he would continue the illegal war. US troops have not left Mosul. Foreign outlets can and do make that very clear even while US outlets tend to play dumb. But there was Barry lying yesterday and notice how if Bush gave that speech, exact words, it would be called out everywhere but Barack gives it and . . . not a word of objection…

War clouds refuse to disperse a year after Georgia waged war against Russia. On the anniversary of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s ill-fated invasion of South Ossetia 8 August, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev warned: “Georgia does not stop threatening to restore its ‘territorial integrity’ by force. Armed forces are concentrated at the borders near Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and provocations are committed,” including renewed Georgian shelling of the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali. What is the result of the Ossetia fiasco? Did Russia “win” or “lose”? Has it put paid to NATO expansion? What lessons did Saakashvili and his Western sponsors learn? Afghan Husbands Win Right to Starve Wives
By Robert Mackey, NYTimes
Bowing to international pressure and unprecedented protests by hundreds of women on the streets of Kabul, the Afghan government promised in April to review a new law imposing severe restrictions on women in Shiite Muslim families. Last week, though, Human Rights Watch discovered that a revised version of the Shiite Personal Status Law had been quietly put into effect at the end of July — meaning that Shiite men in Afghanistan now have the legal right to starve their wives if their sexual demands are not met and that Shiite women must obtain permission from their husbands to even leave their houses, “except in extreme circumstances.”…

And if the corrosive and utterly destructive effects of the ideology of racism werre not apparent to you before the election of Barack ‘Hope & Change’ Obama, then surely by now they should be, and especially its effects on the ‘left’….

Mahdi Army spokesmen have promoted fears about the “third sex” and the “feminization” of Iraq men, and suggested that militia action was the remedy. Its stock has tripled.” An Associated Press account published July 23rd observed: “With the military fighting two wars and Pentagon budgets on a steady upward rise, defense companies regularly posted huge gains in profits and rosier earnings forecasts during recent quarters. Even as the rest of the economy tumbled last fall, military contractors, with the federal government as their primary customer, were a relative safe haven.” Among the big winners are top Pentagon contractors, as ranked by WashingtonTechnology.com as of 2008. Quiet slicing of the West Bank makes abstract prayers for peace obscene
Slavoj Zizek
On 2 August 2009, after cordoning off part of the Arab neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in east Jerusalem, Israeli police evicted two Palestinian families (more than 50 people) from their homes; Jewish settlers immediately moved into the emptied houses. Although Israeli police cited a ruling by the country’s supreme court, the evicted Arab families had been living there for more than 50 years. The event – which, rather exceptionally, did attract the attention of the world media – is part of a much larger and mostly ignored ongoing process. Five months earlier, on 1 March, it had been reported that the Israeli government had drafted plans to build more than 70,000 new homes in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank; if implemented, the plans could increase the number of settlers in the Palestinian territories by about 300,000 Such a move would not only severely undermine the chances of a viable Palestinian state, but also hamper the everyday life of Palestinians…

Fairy tale turned nightmare: Obama, liberal warmonger-in-chief, can’t be trusted on Iraq
D.K. Jamaal
…The likely reality is that Obama’s White House probably intends to keep anywhere from 50,000 to 70,000 don’t-call-them-combat brigades in Iraq indefinitely beyond the August 2010 deadline. The necessity of those expanded troop levels is up for fair debate. The unacceptability of the Democrats’ insincerity on Iraq is not. Unsurprisingly, none of this seems to alarm the suddenly quiet anti-war movement, despite Obama’s history of hedging on his progressive pledges. Neither are they apparently alarmed that Obama is doing Bush one better by ratcheting up the war in Afghanistan. One can only imagine the apoplexy from Democrats had John McCain implemented an Afghan surge as President. The silence from the “anti-war” left on Obama’s warmongering indicates that for many, opposition to Iraq was never really about bringing the troops home. It was about intense dislike of Bush…
