Bagram Isn’t The New Guantánamo, It’s The Old Guantánamo
Andy Worthington
Back in September 2005, when I first began researching Guantánamo for my book The Guantánamo Files, the prison was still shrouded in mystery, even though attorneys had been visiting prisoners for nearly a year, following the Supreme Court’s ruling, in June 2004, that they had habeas corpus rights. Researchers at the Washington Post and at Cageprisoners, a human rights organization in the UK, had compiled tentative lists of who was being held, but, although these efforts were commendable, much of it was little more than groping in the dark — a broken jigsaw puzzle based on media reports and interviews with released prisoners — because the Bush administration refused to provide details of the names and nationalities of those it was holding…

Gay Men Targeted In Iraq, Report Says
Militias Blamed for Scores of Killings
Ernesto Londoño, Washington Post Foreign Service
Human Rights Watch will urge in a report to be released Monday that the Iraqi government to do more to protect gay men, saying militiamen have killed and tortured scores in recent months as part of a social cleansing campaign. Although the scope of the problem remains unclear, hundreds of gay men may have been killed this year in predominantly Shiite Muslim areas, the report’s authors said, basing their conclusion on interviews with gay Iraqi men, hospital officials and an unnamed United Nations official in Baghdad. “The government has done absolutely nothing to respond,” said Scott Long, director of the gay rights program at Human Rights Watch. “So far there has been pretty much a stone wall”…

Home-grown birds
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
Space is scarce in Gaza’s camps and cities, and many of those who used their land for vegetable, beef and chicken farming faced great destruction during Israel’s 3 week massacre of Gaza. In many areas of the Strip, not even cows, sheep or chickens were spared. This last Israeli attack on Gaza was not the first to devastate the agricultural sector. Prior invasions wreaked damage in farming areas near the Green Line border. A farmer friend in Al Faraheen, east of Khan Younis, lost most of his 3,000 chickens and a couple hundred pigeons to an Israeli invasion in May 2008. The same invasion razed 100 dunums (1 dunum=1000 square metres) of wheat and peas, and 10s more of olive, date, lemon and guava trees, a total of over 1,500 trees. Accustomed to making due in the worst of circumstances, many Palestinians in Gaza convert one or several rooms, or a rooftop, into chicken coops, often raising pigeons as well..

Ex-nuclear reactor employee: We were forced to drink uranium
Justice
It seems that they are trying to imitate Dr. Mengele from the Nazi camp during the Second World War. This is not the first time they used human beings as guinea pigs for experiments. Another example what they did with the Sephardi jews in 1951. Workers at the nuclear reactor facility in Dimona were made to volunteer to drink uranium in 1998 as part of an experiment, according to a lawsuit filed four months ago in the Be’er Sheva Labor Tribunal by a former worker at the facility. The experiment was allegedly carried out without obtaining written consent from the workers or warning them of risks or side effects, as required by the Declaration of Helsinki on human experimentation…

Worldwide Iraqi treasure hunt
By Lynda Hurst, Toronto Star, via Axis of Logic
The sacred antiquities of humankind were not only stolen and sold for mammon – a destruction of these sites was carried out with such a ferocity that causes one to think of the rampage of a killer while committing a hate crime. Who is so motivated by psychotic rage to do this? The media would have us believe it was ordinary Iraqi citizens – which makes no sense. Axis of Logic correspondent in Germany, Vera Gottlieb, knows intuitively: “This wasn’t ‘random’ looting – this was ‘shopping’ in a most selective way…and the US looking the other way. What better way to destroy a nation…destroy its culture.”…

It’s All In The Name…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
You can consider yourself lucky not to carry a Muslim name. For those who can’t understand my spelling — spell it – Moooslem or Muzzies for short. Because if your name is slightly Moooslem, you can be arrested, hassled and denied entry in any of the “civilized” western countries. But if your name is Christian, Hindu, Shinto, Jain, Buddhist, Jewish, they will let you through – provided that the passport control officer is not some fucking ignorant moron (like the rest of the majority, may I add) who can’t tell the difference between a Sikh and an Moooslem. They’re all turbaned, after all. Aren’t they ?…

Theory of Relativity….As it Applies to Palestine
Mazin Qumsiyeh,PhD, A Bedouin in cyberspace, a villager at home
There was this story about a farmer who went to the judge and complained that he and his family of 8 live in a two-room crowded place. The wise judge said I will make it nicer for you but you have to do exactly as I say. Upon agreement, he asked him to bring the chickens in the house that night. The next day complaining about the noise and the smell, he was told to add in the two goats. And when on the third day he complained about all the problems, he was told to add in the cow. Finally, with the situation out of control the judge told him he can take all the animals out and the farmer came back the next day to tell the judge how pleased he is because he now had so much space and the place is so clean and comfortable! …

Karroubi: Iranian guards piled nude protesters on top of each other
AFP
An Iranian opposition leader made fresh claims on Saturday that several protesters jailed in the June election unrest died in prisons after they were tortured, beaten and made to crawl like animals. “Some youngsters who were chanting slogans were beaten in such a way that they lost their lives,” said Mehdi Karroubi in his newspaper Etemad Melli on Saturday. The reformist cleric charged that several protesters were tortured in the Kahrizak detention centre, south of Tehran, before it was ordered closed by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei…

By CHELSEA J. CARTER (AP)

I am Not Yet Born, Forgive Me!
Hussein Al-alak, The Iraq Solidarity Campaign
When the British government ordered its troops to invade Iraq, it conveniently forgot to inform them that when they entered the land between the two rivers, the sights that lay before them were not those of weapons of mass destruction or Al-Qaida cells but a country whose entire infrastructure had been decimated as a result of the Sanctions. The march into Baghdad, was not one which was met with the throwing of sweets and flowers but a world which had been reduced to a “pre-industrial age”, which after the First Gulf War had to contend with the deaths of over one million children under the age of five, a country whose population had to endure a systematic cultural, technological and educational starvation which according to Madaline Albright in the 1990’s was a “Price worth paying”, if it meant containing Saddam Hussein…

Baby Talk: Mark Steyn Strikes Back for Islamophobia
Chris Floyd
In that august forum of serious, respectable conservatism, “The Corner,” Mark “Mandingo” Steyn has responded to the post here yesterday taking him and his fellow Islamophobes to task for the “psychosexual panic” they evince in the face of their self-concocted vision of a “takeover” of Europe by prodigiously breeding Muslims. It goes without saying that Steyn (and a few of his fanboys in the comments section here) make no genuine reply to the substance of the piece, which drew heavily on a long, detailed essay on Islamophobia by Pankaj Mishra in the Guardian…

Obama’s Presidency: A Political and Moral Disappointment
By Dr. Ludwig Watzal
It’s all over town. Only the Obama administration does not want to hear it. The people responsible for the moral decay of U.S. foreign policy were the ‘Bush-worriers’: Vice President Dick Cheney and his President George W. Bush and all the other cronies. Why will Eric Holder investigate the poor CIA subordinates who just followed orders? The torture memos and all the other unconstitutional and partly criminal orders went all the way down the chain of command. The White House people were a gathering of political tricksters. The U.S. has no moral authority anymore, despite Obama, because his foreign policy has only been slightly different from his predecessor’s. Anti-American militancy in the Third World has not diminished…

The Pentagon Wants Authority to Post Almost 400,000 Military Personnel in U.S.
Matthew Rothschild
The Pentagon has approached Congress to grant the Secretary of Defense the authority to post almost 400,000 military personnel throughout the United States in times of emergency or a major disaster. This request has already occasioned a dispute with the nation’s governors. And it raises the prospect of U.S. military personnel patrolling the streets of the United States, in conflict with the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878…
