CIA: Secret Operations, Drug Money
By Farzana Shah
In Afghanistan, U.S./NATO have put the blame on Taliban for poppy cultivation to finance their resistance to allied forces. Ironically, it was only in Taliban era when the world had seen a sharp decline in opium crop in Afghanistan. The Afghan Taliban had banned opium cultivation nationwide, probably for the first time in Afghan history. A more important question is how and when this business of drug production and trafficking started in region? CIA has been using drug money since long to generate money to support its operations all over the world. It did not start in Afghanistan it was brought here after experimenting somewhere else. This is something which is not a lead story in international media for obvious reasons despite the fact it is harming millions of lives around the globe…

Panic Attackers: Once More Into the Sink of Fear With Steyn, Amis and the Islamophobes
Chris Floyd
A couple of years ago I wrote a blog post dealing with one of Mark Steyn’s hate tracts about the Muslim “takeover” of Europe. Steyn, like his ardent admirer Martin Amis, displays a remarkably transparent psychosexual panic at the thought of big Muslim bucks breeding holy warriors to cast the white man down. (As an American Southerner, I am all too familiar with this “Mandingo Syndrome.”) Oddly enough, of all the articles I’ve written over the years, the Steyn piece has produced the longest-lasting reaction. To this day, I still get hate mail and indignant comments from Steyn’s little sycophants, denouncing my ignorance of Islam’s relentless, monolithic devouring of European “civilization.”..

GI Special 7H12: “A Hole In The Captain’s Nose” [ 15 August 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
“I Would See Other Soldiers Coughing Up Blood Into Their Shirts”.
Within 24 hours of landing at the Qarmat Ali water treatment plant, Russell Kimberling had developed symptoms from the orange dust that was everywhere. Kimberling, a former captain and company commander in the 1st Battalion, 152nd Infantry Regiment, provided security for KBR contractors at the water plant in Basra, Iraq. Within a week of arriving, he developed headaches and a bloody nose. The chemical eventually worked a hole all the way through the side of his nose, and he was medevaced to Germany. About half his 120 soldiers had similar symptoms, he said during a Senate Democratic Policy Committee hearing Aug. 3. After his return to Qarmat Ali, Kimberling said he was ordered to accompany several civilians who wanted to see the orange dust at the plant.

Video: Homeless in East Jerusalem
TheRealNews
On August 2nd, Israeli riot and border police evicted two Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem, claiming the land on which their houses were built belongs to Jews. The court ruling was the result of a Jewish settlers’ association claiming there were Jewish inhabitants in the region in the 1930s. The Real News spoke to the evicted families, and to Stephen Lendman, Research Associate at the Center for Research on Globalization about whether the same could happen to Jewish families….

His name is Ezra Nawi
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
In the occupied West Bank, Ezra Nawi, a Jewish peace and justice activist, is being persecuted and quite likely imprisoned at length for his solidarity with and non-violent support of the Israeli army and Israeli settler-oppressed Palestinians of the South Hebron hills region. I met and worked with Nawi in 2007 in South Hebron while living with the Palestinian families of Susiya; saw his tenacity, integrity and his direct but non-violent approach in confronting Israeli soldiers and abusive Israeli settlers who routinely attack the Palestinians from the region…

Iran is self-destructing
Hamid Dabashi
… The Islamic Republic is self-destructing because it played its transparent hand for too long, and too clumsily, precisely the same way that the Jewish state has played its victimhood for too long and too clumsily. Nobody could defeat Zionism, so Zionism defeated itself, by being too arrogant, too indulgent, and too brazen in its disregard for basic human decency, thinking it could just wipe Palestine and Palestinians off the face of the world. Well, Palestinians were not wiped off. They are still there, and they are fighting back — tall, towering, and upstanding. But belligerent Zionism, just like militant Islamism, and just like Christian and Hindu fundamentalism, has run morally aground. The 2006 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the 2008-2009 massacre of Palestinians in Gaza were the ultimate signs of its moral and military meltdown, its naked brutalities exposing the fact that it, too, just like its Islamist counterpart in Iran, has hit the point of diminishing returns, where people no longer buy its outworn commodification of victimhood, as best documented and argued by Norman Finkelstein…

Zionist prison authorities forced to back down on isolation of Comrade Sa’adat
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine -PFLP
The Zionist prison administration were forced to back down from their most recent attacks upon the rights of imprisoned General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Comrade Ahmad Sa’adat, including being confined to a tiny cell in solitary confinement for seven days. Attorney Suleiman Shahin of the PA Ministry of Prisoners had filed a petition against the arbitrary sanctions of the prison administration on August 14, 2009. The prison administration review panel stated that forcing Comrade Sa’adat into solitary confinement was arbitrary and without reason, and ordered him instead into the general isolation ward. The panel also said it would study the possibility of restoring Comrade Sa’adat’s other rights, including purchasing from the prison canteen and smoking…

Ministry of prisoners: Israel kidnaps female ex-detainees released from its jail
Palestinian Information Center
The ministry of prisoners’ affairs said on Saturday that Israel deliberately kidnaps female ex-detainees after their release from its jails, noting that IOF troops stationed at the container checkpoint in Bethlehem kidnapped days ago a released prisoner called Aisha Abayat. Director of the information office in the ministry Riyadh Al-Ashqar stated that Abayat was kidnapped by IOF troops when she was still a little girl under age 15 and was isolated in solitary confinement more than once in the jails of Jalama, Telmond and Ayalon. He added that Abayat had gone on hunger strike in protest at her imprisonment conditions and sustained wounds after she and her prison mates were physically assaulted by Israeli soldiers in a bid to dissuade them from their strike…

GI Special 7H10: Obama Throws The Bombs [ 14 August 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
U.S. and NATO deaths from roadside and other bomb blasts in Afghanistan soared sixfold in July compared with the same month last year. The number of incidents from IEDs, or improvised explosive devices, soared to 828, the highest level of the war and more than twice as many as in July 2008. Of those 828 incidents, 410 bombs were found and neutralized and 310 were ineffective. But 108 bombs were effective, triple the 36 effective attacks a year ago, an increase that suggests militants are getting better at placing and detonating bombs. More than 230 foreign troops were wounded in bomb attacks last month, more than triple the 67 wounded last July, U.S. figures show. July, when 75 troops died, was the deadliest month in Afghanistan for U.S. and NATO forces since the 2001 U.S. invasion. Forty-four Americans died last month.

Afghanistan passes ‘food for sex’ law
Jon Boone
Afghanistan has quietly passed a law permitting Shia men to deny their wives food and sustenance if they refuse to obey their husbands’ sexual demands… The new final draft of the legislation also grants guardianship of children exclusively to their fathers and grandfathers, and requires women to get permission from their husbands to work…The law has been backed by the hardline Shia cleric Ayatollah Mohseni, who is thought to have influence over the voting intentions of some of the country’s Shias, which make up around 20 per cent of the population. Karzai has assiduously courted such minority leaders in the run up to next Thursday’s election, which is likely to be a close run thing, according to a poll released on Friday…

Israeli Containment Strategy: Gaza Misery Used to Intimidate West Bankers
Shir Hever, Alternative Information Center (AIC)
…The division imposed by Israel between Gaza and the West Bank is a classic “divide-and-conquer” policy, in which Israel attempts to present the severance of the two areas as an internal Palestinian conflict, as if Gazans are all Hamas supporters and West Bankers are all Fatah supporters. In reality, the two policies enacted by Israel towards the two regions are components of a single policy to contain the Palestinian resistance, and bide for time. The siege on Gaza is a “primitive” form of containment, a simple repressive siege which has transformed the Gaza Strip into the world’s largest prison. The people of Gaza are held as prisoners—by restricting them to a small location, and by strictly controlling everything going in or out of that area. Like in most prisons, a smuggling industry is thriving in Gaza and, like in most prisons, the prisoners are taught a cynical lesson that “might makes right.” The containment strategy over the West Bank is more sophisticated and complex, but the message Israel is sending the Palestinians in the West Bank is clear: “If you resist the occupation, we can do to you what we do in Gaza!”…

Interview with René Andrés Pavón, President of the Honduran Human Rights Commission (CODEH)
Israeli Commandos with Experience in Palestine and Colombia are Training the Honduran Armed Forces
Dick Emanuelsson, Translated by Machetera
There are paramilitary structures that are working in coordination with the armed forces, says the undisputed leader of the human rights struggle in Honduras, Andrés Pavón, in regard to the latest casualty of the dictatorship of the Honduran putschists. It’s not that strange. The main professors of state terrorism come from the Zionist state in order to teach their methods of death, intelligence and terror, and they know how to sustain a state against a population that is fighting for its constitutional rights or recognition. Or, as in Honduras’s case, for the re-establishment of democracy…

WHAT ABOUT REAL HEALTH INSURANCE?
Malcom Lagauche
People are hitting the streets in the U.S. in masses. Every day, we see violent demonstrations. We have seen fights and even guns brandished by some of the protestors. Speakers at “town hall” meetings have been shouted down to the point that the meeting must cease. The subject of these raucous events is the proposed overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system by Barack Obama. Let’s be clear about one thing. Obama’s plan is merely window-dressing for business as usual. The supporters of this scheme maintain the U.S. will finally have a national health service. This is only lip-service to the administration…

Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…Since the 1990's and more so…since the American occupation of Iraq, thanks to the Iranian collaborative, we have not stopped hearing from the “alternative” media and its cohort of moronic parrots that “ Saddam was a U.S puppet, a CIA agent”…etc.. Nine times out of ten those who slander the great Martyr Hero President Saddam Hussein with such debased accusations, who was lynched by none other than Iranian and American stooges, still have the gall to proclaim that Saddam Hussein was a U.S puppet. Boycott movement takes hold in British unions
Asa Winstanley, The Electronic Intifada
The international campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel has won several important victories in recent months. At this summer’s trade union conferences in Britain, BDS activists have made significant progress. While the campaign has been building momentum in unions globally since the 2005 Palestinian call for BDS, Israel’s winter invasion of Gaza has spurned several trade unions and union federations in Britain and Ireland to pass motions more explicitly in favor of BDS. Several are calling for BDS for the first time. Tom Hickey, a member of the University and College Union’s (UCU) national executive committee, said, “The question of the moral rightness or wrongness [of BDS against Israel] has effectively already been decided.”…

Uranium Weapons – Does anyone care about our planet? (Part 4)
Peter Eyre
We have seen governments and military refuse to accept that uranium based weapons have been used in all the theatres of war. Only when independent tests and conclusive evidence is provided do these authorities back down. We have seen this in the Balkans, Kuwait, and Iraq. We now have good evidence from Afghanistan, with further news of a leaked German document. Now we only have three more to go, Lebanon, Gaza and Pakistan. We already know what the final outcome will be but it takes time for such authorities to admit to their cover-ups and lies…

Africa: U.S. Military Holds War Games on Nigeria, Somalia
by Daniel Volman
In May 2008, the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, hosted “Unified Quest 2008,” the army’s annual war games to test the American military’s ability to deal with the kind of crises that it might face in the near future. “Unified Quest 2008" was especially noteworthy because it was the first time the war games included African scenarios as part of the Pentagon’s plan to create a new military command for the continent: the Africa Command or Africom. No representatives of Africom were at the war games, but Africom officers were in close communication throughout the event…

What we Palestinians need
Mustafa Barghouthi
…The most difficult task that we face today is creating a unified leadership and strategy binding on all, from which no political or military decisions will depart, and within which framework no single group or party has a monopoly on the decision-making processes. Only with a unified leadership and strategy will we be able to fight the blockade as one, instead of evading unity for fear of the blockade. With a unified leadership and strategy we will able to seize the reins of initiative from others, as opposed to spinning from one reaction to the other, and we will be able to focus our energies on asserting our unified will instead of squandering them in internal power struggles in which the various parties seek outside assistance to strengthen their hand against their opponents on the inside…

The week-long Fatah sixth general conference in Bethlehem was wrapped up Tuesday with the election of a new 18-member executive committee, fourteen of them new faces. The newly-elected members include several former chiefs of the Palestinian Authority (PA) security agencies, including Muhammed Dahlan, the controversial former Fatah strongman who is widely considered an arch-foe of Hamas. Many of the movement’s veteran leaders, such as Ahmed Qurei’ and Al-Tayeb Abdul-Rahim, failed to win a seat on the powerful committee. Receiving the highest vote were veteran Fatah leader Abu Maher Ghunim, who received 1338 votes, followed by imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan Barghouthi with 1063 votes…

…However, it is also unlikely that the current Palestinian leadership will take a strong stance on issues such as East Jerusalem and the refugees, mostly in deference to the United States and also in order to retain hope of working out a peace deal that would allow the Palestinians to have their own state. Natshe’s tone is viewed as more rhetorical than real, even by Fatah’s standards. One Fatah delegate to the conference, who asked to remain anonymous, remarked that Fatah’s pronouncements shouldn’t be taken literally and certainly not too seriously. “When it comes to rhetoric, it can be limitless. But in when it comes to the real test, I am afraid that arm wrestling can produce results.”..

Blackwater Still Armed in Iraq
Jeremy Scahill
Despite the Iraqi government’s announcement earlier this year that it had canceled Blackwater’s operating license, the US State Department continues to allow Blackwater operatives in Iraq to remain armed. A State Department official told The Nation that Blackwater (which recently renamed itself Xe Services) is now operating in Iraq under the name “US Training Center” and will continue its armed presence in the country until at least September 3. That means Blackwater will have been in Iraq nearly two years after its operatives killed seventeen Iraqi civilians in Baghdad’s Nisour Square…
