Video: A song for Gaza
Palestinian Information Center
Turkish artist Murat Solmaz produced a song for Gaza. He wrote the lyrics and composed the music for the song in which he depicted the perseverance, defiance and resistance of the Palestinians in Gaza in the face of a brutal occupation. Solmaz, who plays the piano said that money from the sale of the album will be sent through a Turkish charity to the needy in the Gaza Strip. The artist said in a press release which was published on Thursday in the Turkish press that he wrote the song “Gaza in my heart” because Gaza was a role model in resisting occupation and all kinds of oppression which is practiced against those perceived to be weak by the tyrants around the world…

U.S. settlers in the West Bank
U.S. kids aren’t going to Israel just to live on a kibbutz these days—some of these are willing to take on the Israeli military in the West Bank
Matt McAlleste
…Khantsis believes that all Arabs and Palestinians should be forcibly removed from territory controlled by Israel, including the West Bank. “It’s the most humane way to solve the situation,” Khantsis—who has just graduated from Stony Brook University, on Long Island, with a degree in computer science—says, sipping a soda in an Israeli-run kosher pizzeria in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, this past June. He acknowledges that he is advocating ethnic cleansing. (…) Like most other settlers, Gottlieb doesn’t call the people in the nearby town “Palestinians.” That would imply that there was a country called Palestine. Sometimes they’re “Arabs,” but mostly he calls them “terrorists.” Gottlieb says he’s not afraid. “God’s with me,” he says. “This land has been ours forever.” (…) “I want them to bomb all of Gaza, even if they kill all the civilians,” Lenny says. “You have to firebomb all of Gaza and not let one Jew get hurt.” “We can erase them in no time,” Yehuda says of the Palestinians…

MCHR uncovers horrific details of treatment of captives in Israeli jails
Palestinian Information Center
The Mizan Centre for Human Rights has published a report about the human rights abuses suffered by Palestinian captives in Israeli occupation jails. The details of the report were made public in a press conference on Thursday at the Ambassador Hotel in occupied Jerusalem. Lawyer Abdel-Rauf Musa, director of the Mizan Centre said that the reason for the report was the media pandemonium caused by Zionist claims that Palestinian captives were living a life of luxury at Israeli occupation jails, to the extent that a ministerial committee was formed by the Israeli government to make life hard for Palestinian captives…

Afghanistan, the Unwinnable War
Patrick J. Buchanan,
“Taliban Are Winning: U.S. Commander in Afghanistan Warns of Rising Casualties.” Thus ran the startling headline on the front-page of The Wall Street Journal. The lead paragraph ran thus: “The Taliban have gained the upper hand in Afghanistan, the top American commander there said, forcing the U.S. to change its strategy in the eight-year-old conflict by increasing the number of troops in heavily populated areas like the volatile southern city of Kandahar, the insurgency’s spiritual home.” Source for the story: Gen. Stanley McChrystal himself…

GI Special 7H9: Super-Stupid In Command [ 12 August 2009 ]
Thomas F. Barton
The Taliban are winning. That’s the gist of comments made Monday by the commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal. As if to underscore the point, insurgents launched another audacious attack Monday, seizing a government building in a provincial capital near Kabul and killing five. The Taliban have gained the upper hand in Afghanistan, the top American commander there said, forcing the U.S. to change its strategy in the eight-year-old conflict by increasing the number of troops in heavily populated areas like the volatile southern city of Kandahar, the insurgency’s spiritual home. Gen. McChrystal warned that means U.S. casualties, already running at record levels, will remain high for months to come.

America needs humanitarian intervention
LENIN’S TOMB
…America’s psychopathic healthcare system is sacrificing tens of thousands of lives, mainly working class and African American, for the sake of profit. Health advisors and boards of trustees routinely kill people, knowingly, to defend the bottom-line. Right now, those who are scaremongering about the NHS are lobbying vehemently to ensure that nothing about this vile state of affairs ever changes. They aren’t stupid enough not to understand the consequences of what they are doing, but the current rate of death and misery is part of creating an optimal investment climate. This is social sadism. This is a humanitarian catastrophe. To remedy this intolerable state of affairs, I propose a lobby or solidarity group to ‘Save America’ (or ‘Save America From Itself’, or ‘Stop Them Before They Kill Again’ – you get the picture). There should be rock concerts in Hyde Park to raise money for the millions of Americans who have no healthcare. Bob Geldof and Bono – and here’s the excellent thing – would be totally uninvolved in any of this…

History of CIA Torture: Unraveling the Web of Deceit, Part V
Ernest A. Canning
In Part I of this five-part series, I took care to distinguish the post-9/11 application of torture techniques by the U.S. military from the role played by the CIA and demonstrated how the Bush/Cheney decision to torture predated the quasi-legal Justice Department memos. In Part II, I covered the CIA’s dark beginnings, including links not only to former Nazi war criminals but to those Americans who provided financial support to Hitler’s Germany, including the late Senator Prescott Bush, George W’s paternal grandfather. I also demonstrated how academic studies, performed as part of the CIA’s maniacal quest to crack the code of human consciousness, culminated in KUBARK, the CIA’s 1963 torture manual. In Part III, I showed how the KUBARK torture techniques, applied by US-trained foreign surrogates, became an essential component of the covert dimension of a US-led corporate Empire --- a means for exerting control over populations resistant to the injustice of a system that values the obscene wealth of a few over the needs of the many. Part IV covered “extraordinary rendition.” Here we will deal with the direct application of KUBARK techniques at CIA “black sites,” why we cannot rely on the government as a source of truth, death by torture and the disturbing yet unresolved question as to how many have joined the ranks of the “disappeared”…

The Israeli High Court: Enlisted in the Occupation
Yossi Wolfson for the Alternative Information Center (AIC)
Grey area rulings versus life saving jurisprudence, opportunistic attorneys versus tireless human rights defenders—legal work will not bring an end to the Israeli occupation, but despite the principled dilemma, we cannot abandon it. On 6 March 2007, High Court Judges Levy, Arbel and Berliner heard two criminal cases involving minors. In one case two brothers, aged 13 and 15, attacked another boy who did not wish the former well on the occasion of his Bar Mitzvah. They knocked him on the ground, hit him and smashed a brick on his head. The boy was taken to the hospital. One of the brothers has a previous record involving violent acts. In the second case three boys, aged 14-16, came to an Israeli military checkpoint with knives. None of the three had prior records. One of them waved a knife at a soldier who sat behind a plate glass window. The Jewish children were sentenced to 150 hours of community service, although the court ruled after deliberation not to annul the conviction. The Palestinian children were not only convicted but sentenced to 27 months, and the High Court chose not to intervene and alter this punishment…

6 years after invasion, electricity still scarce in Baghdad
Laith Hammoudi | McClatchy Newspapers
Dark humor flips on when the lights go out in a city that still suffers from crippling power outages despite the billions of dollars that have been invested in its grid. “Electricity is dead. Pray for its soul,” reads graffiti scrawled along a wall in central Baghdad’s Karrada neighborhood. “I miss electricity so much I want to feel an electric shock, just so I know we have it,” said Falah Hasan Ali…

British Army chief says military may have 40-year Afghan role
By Harvey Thompson
The new head of the British Army, General Sir David Richards, has said that Britain could still be in Afghanistan in 40 year’s time. Richards, who takes over Afghan command as chief of the general staff on August 28, told the Times, “I believe that the UK will be committed to Afghanistan in some manner—development, governance, security sector reform—for the next 30 to 40 years.” Questioned about the heaviest troop losses of the Afghan occupation in recent weeks, Richards said that the British campaign was “demanding, certainly, but winnable.”…

Israel sells off refugees’ hopes
Jonathan Cook
Amin Muhammad Ali, a 74-year-old refugee from a destroyed Palestinian village in northern Israel, says he only feels truly at peace when he stands among his ancestors’ graves. The cemetery, surrounded on all sides by Jewish homes and farms, is a small time capsule, transporting Mr Muhammad Ali – known to everyone as Abu Arab – back to the days when this place was known by an Arabic name, Saffuriya, rather than its current Hebrew name, Tzipori…

Iraqi journalists stage protest
Aljazeera.net
Hundreds of Iraqi journalists have marched through Baghdad, the capital, to protest against government censorship and intimidation. Friday’s demonstration came amid a dispute over a series of newspaper editorials suggesting that the Supreme Iraqi Islamic Council (SIIC) political party may have been involved in a bank robbery. Jalal Eddin Saghir, a leader of the SIIC, has threatened to sue Ahmed Abdul-Hussein, a journalist with the state-run Al-Sabah newspaper, for suggesting that the party could have staged the robbery to raise money for national elections in January 2010…

ACLU to Government: Shed Some Light on Bagram
ACLU
Today, we sent a letter to the Department of Defense (DOD), asking them to reconsider their refusal to turn over information about the detention facility at Bagram in Afghanistan. The request is connected to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request we filed earlier this year with the Departments of Defense, Justice and State and the CIA for documents related to the detention and treatment of prisoners at Bagram. Since filing our initial request, the government has been far from responsive in terms of turning over information…

Our fantastic Sameh Brill has come up with another of his great “Hidden Truth Series” videos that compiles documents to tell the story of what is behind what happens. Video: On the Right of Resistance
Free Gaza Movement
We live in an era defined by its brutality. Our challenge is whether to accept this – or to take the risks necessary to transform our world. A year ago, 44 people from 17 countries sailed to Gaza in two small wooden boats. We did what the world would not do – we broke through the siege of Gaza. Over the last year, the Free Gaza Movement organized seven more voyages, successfully arriving to Gaza five times. Ours remain the only international ships to reach the Gaza Strip in over forty-two years. But it is only the beginning of attempts to resist the brutal occupation of Gaza…

Haniyya: “Hamas will never recognize the Zionist entity”
Saed Bannoura
Prime Minister of the dissolved government in Gaza, Ismail Haniyya, stated Thursday that Hamas will never recognize ‘the Zionist entity”, and would continue the resistance until liberating the land and the holy sites. The statements of the Hamas leader came during a festival organized by the Interior Ministry to honor the Palestinians who were killed and injured during the Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip. Several senior political leaders, legislators and leaders of armed groups attended the event. Haniyya said that Hamas will never recognize Israel and ‘will remain steadfast, protecting the blood of the martyrs”…

Evicted Jerusalem family refuses to give up
Jody McIntyre writing from occupied East Jerusalem
At 5:15am on Sunday, 2 August, I woke up to the sound of the Hanoun family’s front room windows being smashed in. I had just laid down to rest only 20 minutes earlier. The Hanoun family is one of 27 families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem facing eviction from their homes as part of a plan to implant a new Jewish settlement in the area. They are refugees from 1948, after being displaced from their home in Haifa during the Nakba, or catastrophe. The family includes 18 members, six of whom are children. They have lived in Sheikh Jarrah since 1956 when the Jordanian government and the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) gave them their houses as part of a project to house Palestinians forced to flee their homes…

Afghanistan passes ‘barbaric’ law diminishing women’s rights
Rehashed legislation allows husbands to deny wives food if they fail to obey sexual demands
Jon Boone
Afghanistan has quietly passed a law permitting Shia men to deny their wives food and sustenance if they refuse to obey their husbands’ sexual demands, despite international outrage over an earlier version of the legislation which President Hamid Karzai had promised to review. The new final draft of the legislation also grants guardianship of children exclusively to their fathers and grandfathers, and requires women to get permission from their husbands to work. “It also effectively allows a rapist to avoid prosecution by paying ‘blood money’ to a girl who was injured when he raped her,” the US charity Human Rights Watch said…
