Religious Fundamentalism in Israel
by Stephen Lendman
Israel Shahak’s (1933 – 2001) “Jewish History, Jewish Religion” argued that while Islamic fundamentalism is vilified in the West, comparable Jewish extremism is largely ignored. In the book’s forward, Edward Said wrote: “….Shahak’s mode of telling the truth has always been rigorous and uncompromising. There is nothing seductive about it, no attempt made to put it ‘nicely,’ no effort expended on making the truth palatable….For Shahak killing is murder is killing is murder: his manner is to repeat. (He) shows that the obscure, narrowly chauvinist prescriptions against various undesirable Others are to be found in Judaism (as in other monotheistic religions) but he always goes on to show the continuity between those and the way Israel treats Palestinians, Christians and other non-Jews. A devastating portrait of prejudice, hypocrisy and religious intolerance emerges.” Shahak’s “Jewish Fundamentalism in Israel” picked up on the theme in explaining its pervasive, destructive influence in Israeli politics, the military and society. He noted that substituting German or Aryan for Jewish and non-Jews for Jews makes it easy to see how a superiority doctrine made an earlier genocide possible and is letting another happen now…

The Campaign to Free Ahmad Sa’adat
Imprisoned Palestinian national leader Ahmad Sa’adat, the General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was transferred on August 11, 2009 to Ramon prison in the Naqab desert from Asqelan prison, where he had been held for a number of months. Ali Baba & his Forty Thieves…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…Yes watching youtube as “divertissement”. I basically collect songs. And one song leads to another, a bit like the One Thousand and One Nights saga…. And where do I land ? I land on “Israeli” songs also called “Hebrew” songs. So of course, being the music aficionado that I am, I listened to quite a few. I was horrified to hear some ashkenazi sing Umm Kulthum. My hand went to my heart fearing that these “people” will soon claim biblical ownership of this Diva’s soul as well as her songs. I wish my horror was limited to this Israeli rendition of Umm Kulthum…being curious and maybe a bit of a masochist, I went searching for more “Israeli” music… Since am not into “fiddler on the roof” type of music, I opted for more familiar tunes, all the while being sure that I will find some Iraqi voice there… Of course my intuition is always right. I found a whole list of songs going under the name of Israeli music – the most famous one being some Iraqi Kurdish Jew, posing with the respective flags of Israel and that of its affiliated mini Zionist entity – now called Kurdistan. I understood then why the likes of Cockburn, Fadel, Fisk and leftist Arab bloggers irritated me so much. They just all sing to the same tune as this Iraqi Kurdish Jew whose songs are marked under the label of Israeli music. I listened to a few. They are all stolen from the Iraqi repertoire, some from Turkey and marketed as indigenous Israeli music…

Kurdish mag sparks wrath by urging Jews to return
By Abdel Hamid Zebari (AFP
A new magazine in Iraq’s Kurdistan region has caused furore among conservative Muslims with a rousing call for Jews to leave Israel — and come back to Iraq. The magazine, “Israel-Kurd”, is the brainchild of Dawood Baghestani, the 62-year-old former chief of the autonomous northern region’s human rights commission….

Kill Them All and Cover Them with Bullshit
By Morton S. Skorodin, M.D. Axis of Logic
Hicks and colleagues report in the April 16, 2009 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine regarding civilian non-combatant deaths during the current Iraq War period (2003-2008) was seriously flawed. Their stated goal was to analyze the causes of these deaths. To accomplish this purpose they used the database of Iraqbodycount.org that estimates 91,358 deaths due to “armed violence”. For this report the database was pared down to 60,481. Several aspects of this are problematic. Iraqbodycount.org lists no publications in peer-reviewed biomedical journals. This is important since the methodology used by the authors on this website has been widely criticized. Their methodology lends itself to undercounting of the excess dead, because they require documentary proof of each death. This ignores an important and obvious problem that may be concisely phrased “the fog of war”. How this manifests in Iraq includes mass unmarked graves, rapid burials by Muslims of their relatives without notifying press or authorities, poor communications due to war-related destruction, etc…

The Fourth Corner of the Revolution Square
Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
This is a very refreshing analytical article by an activist/writer, whose work is regularly published by the newspaper Khiaban. This article was originally published in issue number 27 (July 20, 2009) of that paper. In this, Milad S. critiques three prevailing and incomplete interpretations of what is happening in Iran, and presents a fourth view. Due to the importance of the topics discussed, we think it is important for all socialist forces everywhere to give the article some serious consideration…

Abraham bought a cave, he did not buy Palestine
Iqbal Tamimi, Palestine Think Tank
I have been reading an article by Robin-Yassin Kassab, entitled ‘A visit to Hebron’. Yassin Kassab is the author of ‘The Road from Damascus’. This time he was not writing about Damascus, he was writing about my home town Al-Khaleel, known to the Western world by the name of Hebron. In his article he describes his visit to Al-Khaleel accompanied by a number of wonderful writers and publishers, amongst them Michael Palin, Henning Mankel, Deborah Moggach, Claire Messud and MG Vassanji, and he describes the misery of the people in my hometown under the illegal Israeli occupation. Those writers have been able to witness the very painful reality when they travelled to Palestine to participate in the Palestine Festival of Literature…

Semitic Musings…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…Hence, logically speaking – if you use deductive thinking, there is no such thing as a Jewish people. There are different races who adopted the Jewish faith – just like there are different races who adopted the Islamic or Christian faith. Would that make a Christian guy from Arkansas a Semite just because he choose to study the bible in Aramaic/Syriac instead of English ? Of course not. So if Race and Religion do not form the basis of identity and affiliation what does? We go back to square 1 – Language. And since linguistically speaking both Hebrew and Syriac are considered “dead languages” and most linguists would agree that Arabic is the only true surviving language of the Semites – what does that tell you about who the real Semites are, and by correlation who the real Anti-Semites are ?…

The Real Grand Chessboard and the Profiteers of War
by Prof. Peter Dale Scott
In the Road to 9/11 I summarized the dialectic of open societies: how from their energy they expand, leading to a higher level of more secretive corporations and agencies, which eventually weaken the home country through needless and crushing wars. I am not alone in seeing America in the final stages of this process, which since the Renaissance has brought down Spain, the Netherlands, and Great Britain. Much of what I wrote summarized the thoughts of writers before me like Paul Kennedy and Kevin Phillips. But there is one aspect of the curse of expansion that I underemphasized: how dominance creates megalomanic illusions of insuperable control, and how this illusion in turn is crystallized into a prevailing ideology of dominance…

Beware of Israel’s Border Stamps
By Joharah Baker for MIFTAH
It has always been my conviction that Israel hatches its long-term plans far before anything visible appears on the ground. This conviction has been proven true in more than one instance. For example, the separation wall that now slices up the West Bank is more or less a manifestation of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s plan back in the 40s, which stipulated the creation of a Palestinian entity on no more than 40 percent of the West Bank. It is true regarding the isolation of Jerusalem, which first began as a seemingly fluid checkpoint near Al Ram. Today, the entrance into Jerusalem is all but airtight with numerous crossings (they are no longer called checkpoints) barring Palestinians access to the holy city. Today, it is true of something else. Now, not only are those bearing Palestinian ID cards banned from entering Jerusalem or Israeli territories, but those who have only foreign passports also run this risk when entering the country…

US Secretary of State Clinton’s Micro-Management of the Corporation that Funds the Honduras Coup Regime
Records Demonstrate that the Secretary Has Hands-On Control of the Fund that Gave $6.5 Million to the Regime After the June 28 Coup
By Bill Conroy and Al Giordano
In recent days, Narco News has reported that, in the three months prior to the June 28 coup d’etat in Honduras, the US-funded Millennium Change Corporation (MCC) gave at least $11 million US dollars to private-sector contractors in Honduras and also that since the coup it has doled out another $6.5 million. The latter revelation – that the money spigot has been left on even after the coup – comes in spite of claims by the State Department that it has placed non-humanitarian funding “on pause” pending a yet-unfinished review. Narco News has further learned – based on a review documents available on the websites of the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the US State Department – that Secretary Clinton, as chairman of the MCC board, is not just a figurehead in name only. She has played an extremely active role in governing and promoting the fund and its decisions…

At Least 14 Killed as US Drone Strikes South Waziristan
Taliban Spokesman Insists Only Civilians Were Killed
Jason Ditz
A US drone strike into the South Waziristan Agency of Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) struck a house in the village of Ladda, killing at least 14 people and wounding several others. The village was near last Wednesday’s drone strike, which officials claim killed TTP leader Baitullah Mehsud. Pakistani officials say the house attacked today was a “militant hideout” or conversely a “training ground,” but a spokesman for an unnamed Taliban-style organization in the area insisted it was a civilian residence and only civilians were killed in the strike…

Gaza play highlights difficulties for artists under siege
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
“Don’t people in Gaza love to see films like people anywhere?” aspiring filmmaker Hossam Abdel Latif asks. His wife, the more practical Souad, retorts, “Someone who can’t afford to eat is going to go to the cinema?” The question of the arts in times of siege and occupation is one of the main themes in Gaza’s newest theatre production, Film Cinema, which opened on 4 August in Gaza City. A stage buried in film negatives, and adorned with a lone plump teddy bear, sets the scene of the three-person play…

EGYPT: Israel Gas Deal Inflames Opposition
By Adam Morrow and Khaled Moussa Al-Omrani*
Opposition figures and political activists have slammed a new deal to sell Egyptian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Israel at what they say are vastly reduced prices. “Egyptian gas is being sold to Israel at prices far below the international average,” Ibrahim Yosri, former head of legal affairs and treaties at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry told IPS. “This agreement is proof that the ruling regime is unconcerned with public opinion and is insistent on depriving the Egyptian public of its rightful national assets.” On Jul. 28, Egypt formally agreed to sell between 12.5 billion and 16 billion cubic metres of LNG per year to Israel for a period of between 17 and 22 years. The Cairo-based Egyptian-Israeli energy consortium Egyptian Mediterranean Gas (EMG) will supply the gas to Israeli firm Dorad Energy for a total reported cost of between 2.1 billion and 3.3 billion dollars…

The Jerusalem Municipality hands-over a number of demolition orders to Palestinian Families
Ghassan Bannoura
The Israeli municipality handed over on Wednesday a number of demolition orders to Palestinian families from East Jerusalem. Local sources reported that Israeli police forces attacked and searched homes in Surbaher, Esawiyeh, and inside the old City before handing the demolition orders. All those areas are Palestinian neighborhoods that Israel is planning to take over and build more Jewish settlements, residents reported. The Municipality as always says the homes are built without the needed building permission…

US corporations squeezing more output from workers and paying lower wages
By Patrick O’Connor
US Labor Department data released yesterday showed productivity up 6.4 percent in the second quarter, the largest gain since 2003 and higher than economists’ forecasts of 5.5 percent. Over the same period, workers’ compensation fell sharply. The Bureau of Labor Statistics explained that productivity—which measures hourly output per employee—increased “due to hours worked declining faster than output.” In other words, big business is using the rise in unemployment to extract greater output from employed workers through speedup and other forms of intensified exploitation…

Endless War: The Suicide of the United States
Dahr Jamail, t r u t h o u t
Sergio Kochergin, back home from his second deployment in Iraq, held a gun in his mouth, trying to muster the courage to pull the trigger. Untreated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and accompanying nightmares and insomnia, heavy substance abuse, and several failed attempts at self-medication had taken their toll on him. He was in an apartment he shared with a friend in Texarkana, Texas, after having spent the past few months with his parents, where he “was drinking too much and causing too much trouble, breaking things, flipping out every day, and cursing at them.” The decision to end his life came in early 2007, from a desperate need for relief and to avoid deployment back to Iraq…

White House Opening to Hezbollah, Hamas?
Robert Dreyfuss
Last week, speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, John Brennan, the White House’s top adviser on terrorism, described the outlines of the Obama administration’s new counterterrorism strategy. During his appearance, which drew several hundred people to the basement conference room at CSIS, I had a chance to ask Brennan about US policy toward Hezbollah and Hamas. In his response, Brennan opened the door a crack to the idea of a new US policy toward the two groups, and his comments stirred some unhappiness at the State Department. Here’s are two transcripts, first, my exchange with Brennan and then the question-and-answer session at the State Department..

By Khalid Amayreh
On Monday, 10 August, it was revealed that Fadi Hamadneh, died at the notorious Juneid lockup in Nablus . The circumstances of his death remain unclear as of the time of preparing this report, but his family and relatives are accusing security agents of the Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA) of torturing him to death. Hamadneh’s brother dismissed the official PA narrative that he committed suicide in his cell as “hogwash” and “blatant lies.”…

Iran purges Intelligence Ministry officials
By ALI AKBAR DAREINI (AP)
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad tightened his grip on Iran’s powerful intelligence services, ousting four senior officials in a widening purge against authorities who challenged the harsh crackdowns after June’s disputed elections, lawmakers and media said Monday. The shake-up at the Intelligence Ministry — the nation’s main spy agency — deepened the rifts straining Iran’s conservative ranks over Ahmadinejad’s strong-arm political tactics and the crushing response to the pro-reform opposition since the June 12 election…
