July casualties highest of Afghan war
By James Cogan
The determination of the Obama administration to escalate its neo-colonial war in Afghanistan has led to a sharp increase in the casualties for both US and NATO troops. The Taliban and other insurgent movements are responding with daily guerilla attacks on the occupation forces, which lack sufficient numbers and logistical support to secure the ground they have been ordered to hold. The number of US/NATO deaths in July has already reached 58—the highest monthly toll since the invasion in October 2001. The previous high was 46 dead in both June and August last year. Among the latest fatalities are 31 Americans, 18 British, four Canadians, two Turkish, one Italian and one Australian. The American losses include personnel from every branch of the military—Army, Marine, Navy and Air Force. Five part-time National Guardsmen who were sent to Afghanistan have lost their lives this month…

Iraqi Refugees: Women’s Rights and Security Critical to Returns
Refugees International
The Iraqi refugee crisis is far from over and recent violence is creating further displacement. Iraqi women will resist returning home, even if conditions improve in Iraq, if there is no focus on securing their rights as women and assuring their personal security and their families’ well being. Reducing support to displaced families could force returns to insecure areas without adequate services and trigger additional instability in Iraq… Very few displaced people in northern Iraq and Syria are willing to return in the foreseeable future… Not one woman interviewed by RI indicated her intention to return. Some women said they won’t return because they are members of targeted minority groups, or because of injuries they suffered. Many widows told RI that they fear returning to homes where their husbands were killed, and where they now have no means of economic survival…

Israeli officer promotes war crimes at Harvard
Maryam Monalisa Gharavi and Dr. Anat Matar
On 9 July Harvard University’s Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research (HPCR) invited Colonel Pnina Sharvit-Baruch, former Israeli military legal adviser, to their online Humanitarian Law and Policy Forum. The stated aim was to bring “objective” discussion to the principle of distinction in international humanitarian law, or what the forum organizers called “combat in civilian population centers and the failure of fighters to distinguish themselves from the civilian population.” Although billed as a lecturer in the Law Faculty at Tel Aviv University — and therefore as a detached humanitarian law analyst — Colonel Sharvit-Baruch was in fact deeply involved in Israel’s three-week onslaught in Gaza in December and January, that counted its 1,505th victim found under rubble earlier this month…

Obama task force backs indefinite detention without trial
By Tom Eley
On Monday, an Obama administration task force announced it would delay for six months release of a report that was to outline plans for the prosecution of inmates at its Guantánamo Bay prison camp and future prisoners seized in the “war on terror.” In its stead came an interim report and a White House press briefing that together indicate President Barack Obama is likely to rely on military tribunals or indefinite detention without trial in cases where evidences against “terror suspects” is scant or tainted by torture…

Israel bans mention of Palestinian ‘nakba’ from textbooks
Justice
This is sounding like Hitler’s Germany. Israel is flushing itself down the CRAPPER. Next I suppose everyone in Israel will be saying Heil Netanyahu when he makes an apperance in public. Israel will remove from school textbooks an Arabic term that describes its creation in 1948 as a “catastrophe”, the Education Ministry said on Wednesday. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said when he was opposition leader two years ago the word “nakba” in Israeli Arab schools was tantamount to spreading propaganda against Israel…

Women report abuses in Israeli jails
Vita Bekker
A Palestinian human rights group yesterday lambasted Israel’s treatment of female Palestinian prisoners, saying they are beaten during their arrests, their education and visitation rights are violated and those who are pregnant are shackled before and after they give birth. The report by the Addameer Prisoners Support and Human Rights Association, which was sponsored by the United Nations and based on dozens of interviews with current and former female inmates in Israeli jails, condemned Israel for providing them poor access to health care, education and family visits and said the country’s prisons and detention centres were ill-suited for women…

U.S. Military Holds Iraqi Journalist Without Charge
Quil Lawrence
American forces arrested Iraqi journalist Ibrahim Jassam last year and continue to hold him without charge in a U.S. military prison camp — even as the United States transfers jurisdiction to Iraqi authorities. Military propaganda airs in Wisconsin
The Common Ills
Military propaganda makes it on air in the US and is disguised as news. At least two Wisconsin TV stations have aired military propaganda with one putting their own reporter over it (Jeff Alexander) to read the military’s copy. Madison Wisconsin’s WKOWTV offers a pure propangada look (video report) at the US run Iraqi prision Camp Cropper. It tells you that terrorists and criminals are in the prison. It forgets to tell you that no one’s been tried. It forgets to tell you that at least six prisoners have died or that the Red Cross has documented abuses at the prison. But it does run it as is. Meaning the report ends with the announcer of the footage declaring, “Army Sgt. Frank Morello, Joint Area Support Group, Public Affairs.” …

The Algerian man, 43, was detained shortly after the 9/11 attacks and spent nearly 8 years in Guantanamo without trial or even charges, just like most other detainees…

Blackwater Seeks Gag Order
Jeremy Scahill
It became common practice during the Iraq occupation for the US State Department to work with private security companies like Blackwater to help facilitate giving what amounted to hush money to the families of Iraqis shot dead by private security contractors. In fact, Blackwater’s owner, Erik Prince, discussed this practice when he testified in front of Congress in October 2007 and admitted to paying $20,000 to a Blackwater victim’s family and $5,000 to another. “We don’t determine that value,” Prince told Congress when asked how his company decides how much an Iraqi life is worth. “That’s kind of an Iraqi-wide policy. We don’t make that one.” Now, Blackwater (which recently renamed itself “Xe”) is attempting to use other means to silence its victims…

Arabic names of Palestinian cities inside Israeli borders and Jerusalem changed to Hebrew
IMEMC News
In a recent and bold move by the Netanyahu government, the Arabic names of cities within Israeli borders and Jerusalem are being changed to Hebrew. The Israeli Minister of Transport has been charged with the task of erasing the Arabic names in Israel, in what has been condemned as a bigoted attempt to deconstruct the Palestinian legacy, especially in Jerusalem. The Arabic name of Al Quds is also set to be changed, as is Nazareth, and other cities within Israel…

US mulls Gulf defences against Iran
AlJazeeraEnglish
Hillary Clinton has said the US will arm Washington’s allies in the Gulf region if Iran builds a nuclear weapon. The US secretary of state said in remarks recorded for a Thai television programme that the White House still wanted Iran to negotiate over its nuclear programme, but warned it would act if it did not halt its activities. “We will still hold the door open, but we also have made it clear that we’ll take actions … working to upgrade the defence of our partners in the region,” she said…

Rampaging Settlers Shatter Fragile Calm
By Mel Frykberg
The northern Palestinian West Bank is turning into a flashpoint as Israeli settlers continue to attack Palestinian civilians and their property as part of a “price tag” policy. On Tuesday Walid Assaf, a Palestinian Legislative Council member, was injured after Israeli settlers near the northern West Bank city Qalqilia threw a rock through his windscreen as he drove past a settlement. On complaining to Israeli soldiers at a nearby Israeli army base, Assaf was told he would have to submit his complaint in writing. On Monday over 1,500 olive trees belonging to Palestinians near the Yitzhar settlement south of the Palestinian city Nablus were set on fire and destroyed by settlers…
