Gambling with peace: how US bingo dollars are funding Israeli settlements
Chris McGreal
For the winning punters chancing their luck at Hawaiian Gardens’ charity bingo hall in the heart of one of California’s poorest towns, the big prize is $500. The losers walk away with little more than an assurance that their dollars are destined for a good cause. But the real winners and losers live many thousands of miles away, where the profits from the nightly ritual of numbers-calling fund what critics describe as a form of ethnic cleansing by extremist organisations. Each dollar spent on bingo by the mostly Latino residents of Hawaiian Gardens, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, helps fund Jewish settlements on Palestinian land in some of the most sensitive areas of occupied East Jerusalem, particularly the Muslim quarter of the old city, and West Bank towns such as Hebron where the Israeli military has forced Arabs out of their properties in their thousands…

Licensed to Kill
JOHN MAXWELL
…In this speech Mr Bush accused Saddam Hussein of great lies, of denying possession of huge stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, of concealing his nuclear capabilities, of trying to buy uranium from Africa – for the news of which Mr Bush credited Tony Blair and the British. It was a tour de force of deception and an attempt to frighten the world in joining the US in an illegal, preventive war. It was Mr Bush’s argument for the persecution and murder of Saddam Hussein. We all know the consequences; Iraq is en route to becoming a satellite of Iran and heading for geopolitical dismemberment; Afghanistan is in flames; Pakistan is teetering on the edge of dissolution and al-Qaeda is accusing the US of plotting to seize Pakistan’s nuclear armoury. The new US administration is trying bravely to restore American credibility, to dispose of thousands of people scraped up from all over the world, tortured and imprisoned without cause…

AL-KHALIL/HEBRON: Israeli soldiers assault unarmed Palestinian teenager, threaten rape. Youth remains committed to nonviolence
by Maureen Jack, Christian Peacemaker Teams
At 4:30 pm on Monday 13 July 2009, two Israeli soldiers attacked a sixteen-year-old Palestinian boy 150 yards from his home in the Tel Rumeida area of Hebron. The attack happened as he was walking to his home carrying heavy electrical cables necessary for repair work on his family’s house. Two workers accompanying him left to raise the alarm. The teenager reported that one particular soldier has often held him for ID checks lasting at least one hour. This soldier and another took his ID and told him to sit on the ground. Initially they made inappropriate sexual comments about the boy and his mother. They then assaulted him, kicking his leg, and hitting him on the neck and back both with their hands and with their rifle butts. He tried to telephone his father but a soldier grabbed the phone from him and hit him with it after removing the battery and SIM card. When the boy’s mother and cousin arrived, he tried to tell them what had happened. Soldiers told him, “Shut up or I will f*** you,” and threatened to rape the women…

Once world’s bread basket, Iraq now a farming basket case
Mike Tharp
Once the cradle of agriculture for civilization, the Land Between Two Rivers — the Tigris and Euphrates — has become a basket case for its farmers. Just ask Naji Habeeb, 85. His family has been growing rice in this village 135 miles southeast of Baghdad for generations. Thin green shoots stick out of the flat paddies, shin-deep in brown water. The Iraqi government, he claims, still owes him half of what he’s due from last year’s crop. He turned it in months ago and still hasn’t been paid. “Shall I suck my fingers and eat like a baby?” he shouted. “The Ministry (of Agriculture) will never know my family is hungry!”…

Khiaban No. 26: ‘Return to Law’ Or Create New Laws?
Amir K., Khiaban No. 26, via Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
Yesterday, the city [of Tehran’s] streets belonged to the people once again. Rafsanjani’s leading of the Friday prayer [at Tehran University] became an excuse for mass gatherings and demonstrations in the city. On route to and from the Tehran University, from the early morning till long after dark, Tehran’s streets were witness to huge and united crowds, who had opened a way through the shields and the truncheons, and filled the hot summer air with their slogans…

Thirty-six army officers arrested in Iran over protest plan
Officers planned to attend sermon by former president Hashemi Rafsanjani in military uniform

The Iranian army has arrested 36 officers who planned to attend last week’s Friday prayer sermon by former president Hashemi Rafsanjani in their military uniforms as an act of political defiance, according to Farsi-language websites. The officers intended the gesture to show solidarity with the demonstrations against last month’s presidential election result, which was won by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but which has been clouded by allegations of mass fraud…

WHAT DID APRIL SAY
Malcom Lagauche
We are approaching the 19th anniversary of the infamous meeting between April Glaspie, former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq, and Saddam Hussein on July 25, 1990. Sadly, this incident has been virtually eliminated from the history of Iraq-U.S. relations. After the cease-fire agreement between the U.S. and Iraq in February 1991, some media attention was given, but that quickly disappeared. April Glaspie met with Saddam Hussein on July 25, 1990 to discuss the future of Kuwait and Iraq. Before we discuss her meeting, let’s look at background information that led to the point where Iraq was on the verge of invading its Arab neighbor to the south..

The Insatiable American Thirst for Blood
Dr Muzaffar Iqbal
The Anti-War Movement in America, Canada, and Britain has virtually become a non-entity. This was not unpredictable because the diverse groups which make up the so-called Anti-War Movement have neither the resources, nor the leadership, nor any solid ideological foundation beyond the apparent loathing for war. The invasion of Afghanistan by the United States took place at a time of high fever (September 11, 2001 attacks) and no one thought much of the long-term agenda of Americans at the time of Afghan invasion. Hence, Afghanistan never gained the kind of front end importance which Iraq immediately achieved with the Anti-War Movement. But now the Anti-War Movement is in total disarray over the continuous occupation of Afghanistan and the expanding military operations. This has given a free hand to the three main governments which lead Afghan operations to do whatever they wish to do in Afghanistan without any fear of homegrown opposition. Thus President Obama had no one to oppose him when he decided to send more troops into Afghanistan. He did this to make his first term as “successful” as that of his predecessors, assuming that the time-tested American definition of success still holds good: America must be engaged in a war to be successful. The insatiable American thirst for blood is now in full bloom in this killing season as its drones continue to take the lives of men, women, and children in various parts of Pakistani FATA and its soldiers continue to dig deeper and deeper into A! fghanist an..

From a “Dirty Arab”.
Layla Anwar, Uncensored Arabwomanblues
I remember when I lived in England, I was daily shocked by the lack of hygiene of the English. It is not that they lack hygiene, it is that they have no sense of hygiene. A subtle difference but important, nonetheless. Of course, this shock was exacerbated when some stinking English who would bathe once a week – which consisted basically of filling the bathtub and soaking in his/her own muck, without rinsing, may I add – would call me a “dirty Arab.”. That happened on more than one occasion – being called a “dirty Arab.” It happened in England and it happened in France…

* * * NOT SATIRE * * *
IDF troops handed Hezbollah-Vatican conspiracy theory
By Ofri Ilani, Haaretz
The Pope and the cardinals of the Vatican help organize tours of Auschwitz for Hezbollah members to teach them how to wipe out Jews, according to a booklet being distributed to Israel Defense Forces soldiers. Officials encouraging the booklet’s distribution include senior officers, such as Lt. Col. Tamir Shalom, the commander of the Nahshon Battalion of the Kfir Brigade. The booklet was published by the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, in cooperation with the chief rabbi of Safed, Rabbi Shmuel Eliahu, and has been distributed for the past few months. The booklet, titled “On Either Side of the Border,” purports to be the testimony of “a Hezbollah officer who spied for Israel.”..According to the book, Nasrallah was invited to join a delegation to tour France, Poland and Italy, including the Vatican. Nasrallah could not refuse an invitation from the Vatican, Avi explained: “We knew [the Pope] identified with Hezbollah’s struggle.”..

Ministry report: IOA rounded up 380 Palestinians, 4 Egyptians in June
Palestinian Information Center
The Ministry for Prisoners’ affairs stated in a recent report that throughout the month of June the Israeli occupation authority (IOA) continued a campaign of kidnappings in all parts of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and Jerusalem. They seized more than 380 Palestinians, as well as four Egyptians in the Negev region on the grounds that they had crossed the Egyptian-Palestinian boundaries and entered a military zone. That is in addition to hundreds of workers kidnapped from inside the Green Line. Riyad al-Ashqar, the director of the information office of the Ministry, clarified that last month marked a major escalation by the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) against Palestinian fishermen. Gunboats abducted 16 Palestinian fishermen and took them to the port of Ashdod for questioning on matters related to the smuggling of weapons into Gaza. They are pressured to become informants in exchange for permission to return to fishing…

Helicopter crashes in Afghanistan, 16 killed

A civilian helicopter under contract for NATO forces in Afghanistan crashed at a military base in the south of the country on Sunday, killing 16 people and wounding five others, the alliance said. Captain Ruben Hoornveld, a Dutch NATO spokesman at Kandahar Air Field, said there was no enemy involvement in the crash, which took place as the helicopter was taking off from the base, NATO’s headquarters in the south of the country… The crash was the second by a former-Soviet civilian helicopter in southern Afghanistan in less than a week. Six Ukrainian crew members died aboard a Soviet-built Mi-26 transport helicopter which crashed in Helmand province on Tuesday. Pro-Settler Rabbi Tells IDF Troops Vatican and Hezbollah Conspire to Exterminate Jews
Tikun Olam
Just when I think that the IDF and Israel’s far-right religious leadership cannot get any weirder, they surprise me yet again. The IDF distributed to its soldiers a pamphlet endorsed by a far-right pro-settler rabbi and written by the American Orthodox movement. It contained this little bit of Jewish conspiracy theory paranoia: The Pope and the cardinals of the Vatican help organize tours of Auschwitz for Hezbollah members to teach them how to wipe out Jews […] The IDF Spokesman’s Office said in a statement: “The book was received as a donation and distributed in good faith to the soldiers. After we were alerted to the sensitivity of its content, distribution was immediately halted.” “Distributed in good faith???” What narischkeit. It was distributed in bad faith. It is a racist piece of utter nonsense. Anyone with half a brain in their head could see that. Don’t IDF officers have half a brain? Or do they just not give a good goddamn what is conveyed to its soldiers (in the IDF’s name) about Arabs? Lest we wonder how the IDF can prosecute a war in Gaza killing 1,400 of whom 1,100 were civilians, this story conveys how such a horror can happen…

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The American soldier who disappeared June 30 in eastern Afghanistan, and was later confirmed to have been captured, appears on a video posted Saturday to a Web site by the Taliban, two United States defense officials said. The soldier is shown in the 28-minute video with his head shaved and the start of a beard. He is sitting, wearing a nondescript gray outfit. When one of his captors holds the soldier’s dog tag up to the camera, the name and ID number are visible…Prompted by his interrogators to give a message to the American people, he says in part: “Please, please bring us home so that we can be back where we belong and not over here, wasting our time and our lives and our precious life that we could be using back in our own country.”..

WaPo bows cravenly to pro-Israel lobby
Helena Cobban
On Thursday, the WaPo published the following, completely craven “Correction”: — A June 26 A-section article referred to Gilo as a Jewish settlement. It is a Jewish neighborhood built on land captured in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War and annexed to Israel as part of Jerusalem’s expanded municipal boundaries. The United Nations has not acknowledged the annexation. So the WaPo quite simply endorses whatever Israel says is the case?? It is not just the UN that has failed to “acknowledge” the annexation/Anschluss of East Jerusalem to Israel. The United States has never either “acknowledged” or— more to the point— supported the vew that east Jerusalem is part of Israel, either. And neither have mst other countries of the world…

Ahmadinejad’s controversial VP pick quits: report
By Jay Deshmukh (AFP)
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s choice as first vice president, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, has walked away from the job, state media reported on Sunday. Mashaie, a controversial politician and confidant of Ahmadinejad, has “resigned three days after his appointment” as first vice president, state-owned English-language channel Press TV reported. The channel initially sourced its report to the education ministry-funded news agency, Pana. In its news item, Pana said “The content of his resignation letter will be published soon.” There was no immediate independent confirmation of Mashaie’s resignation. The appointment was strongly opposed by hardliners among Ahmadinejad’s own support base. Mashaie, whose daughter is married to Ahmadinejad’s son, is an outspoken figure who last year earned the wrath of hardliners, including supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for saying Iran is a “friend of the Israeli people.”…

Israel Plotting Evil Again

Well here we go, Israel Propaganda machine spreading garbage again hoping the propaganda becomes “fact” by media repetition. The new “claim” is that “Global Jihadists” are coming into Gaza continually.(did you get that? Continually???) This statement is so full of holes it could be Swiss Cheese. Firstly, what ARE so called “Global Jihadists” anyway? Are they referring to “al-Qaeda” because that is not even remotely happening. Secondly, notice the timing of this “Propaganda” right after the 2 Hotel bombings in Jakarta. After all, Israel has to somehow create a fabricated tie between the bombings in Jakarta to Gaza, even if that means by falsely associating groups that do NOT exist inside Gaza; and then “associate” these false groups, who do not exist inside Gaza, with HAMAS the Gazan Government…

Mr. President, we are still torturing?
NAT HENTOFF
…The Bagram detention center itself has continued to operate with currently more than 600 prisoners and is being planned to expand its capacity to more than 1,100 as President Obama sends more troops into Afghanistan. In a continuation of the Bush-Cheney practice of deliberately keeping certain groups of suspects far away from our courts and our laws, as well as hidden from monitoring by international human rights groups, the Obama administration has told a federal court that our prisoners at Bagram, many held for more than six years without charges, have no rights under our laws. On June 30, Glenn Greenwald (Salon) – one of the most consistently reliable reporters on Bush and Obama degrading what both call “American values” – quoted Human Rights Watch researcher John Sifton, a reliable source for this column, as having documented that at Bagram: “Approximately 100 detainees, including CIA-held detainees, have died during U.S. interrogations, and some are known to have been tortured to death.”…

Mordechai Vanunu’s Ongoing Ordeal
by Eileen Fleming
Vanunu’s most recent tribulations began on January 25, 2006, when he was convicted by the Jerusalem Magistrates Court of 15 violations of a military order that prohibited him from talking to non-Israelis and for attempting to leave the state [he has no passport] by taking a cab from Jerusalem to Bethlehem to attend Christmas Eve mass at the Church of the Nativity in 2004-his first since he was released from 18 years-most all of it in solitary-from Ashkeleon prison. The original indictment included 22 different violations, Vanunu was charged with 19 and acquitted of four. On July 2, 2007, Israel sentenced Vanunu to six months in jail just for speaking to non-Israeli media — and not on the content — of what are hundreds of conversations that began the day Vanunu emerged from a tomb sized cell for providing the photographic proof in 1986 of Israel’s underground WMD facility…
