Obama Covers Up A Dozen My Lais: Were 3,000 Afghans Murdered As U.S. Troops Stood By?
Ted Rall
“I’ve asked my national security team to…collect the facts,” President Obama told CNN. Then, he said, “we’ll probably make a decision in terms of how to approach it once we have all the facts together.” Probably. Such was Obama’s tepid reaction to a New York Times cover story about an alleged “mass killing of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Taliban prisoners of war by the forces of an American-backed warlord during the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan.” Obama sounds so reasonable. Doesn’t he always? But his reaction to the massacre in the Dasht-i-Leili desert is nothing more than the latest case of his administration refusing to investigate a Bush-era war crime. There are two things Obama doesn’t want you to know about Dasht-i-Leili. First, the political class and U.S. state-controlled media have sat on this story for six to seven years. Second, U.S. troops are accused of participating in the atrocities, which involved 12 times as many murders as My Lai…

Afghan Resistance Statement
Khanjar or the Last Nail in the Coffin of Obama Strategy
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
US, NATO and the stooge Kabul regime have launched a joint operation in Helmand province, with a force of 12,000 troops. This vast operation has been continuing for the past two weeks against the patriotic land of Helmand and its heroic and gallant people. They themselves have acknowledged that the operation is most important for America after the Vietnam war and for Britain after the Falkland’s. It is an organized war in the true sense of the word. From another angle, it is significant as it is conducted after the assumption of power by Obama in the White House and after the announcement of his new strategy. If we read the results and look at the achievements of the operation, we see this so-called organized war after the war of Vietnam and Falkland is but a sheer fiasco. The Khangjar, sword, failed in the vast deserts of Helmand; their military capability, arsenal, arrogance, magnanimity and black propaganda all failed to live up to the expectation…

The “withdrawal” that wasn’t
Zaineb Alani
…Today, Iraq is a nation of 2 million war widows, 5 million orphans, 2 million internally displaced people and 4 million refugees surviving under the meanest living conditions in neighboring countries, topping the UNHCR World Refugee Statistics for the region. Today, 80 percent of Iraqi civilians have witnessed shootings, kidnapping and killings (per UN statistics). Refugees who have relocated to the U.S. find it extremely difficult to adapt to “normalcy.” I teach refugees English as a Second Language in Columbus, Ohio. The trauma these people have witnessed is unimaginable. There is not one family who has not suffered their child being kidnapped, or lost a loved one to sectarian “revenge” killings. I have personally witnessed the struggle of a 10-year-old to adapt to a school system and the concept of normal life where people are not necessarily out there to “kill him.”…

Bush’s Hit Teams
Robert Parry
Despite the new controversy over whether a global CIA “hit team” ever went operational, there has been public evidence for years that the Bush administration approved “rules of engagement” that permitted executions and targeted killings of suspected insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. In effect, President George W. Bush transformed elite units of the U.S. military – including Special Forces and highly trained sniper teams – into “death squads” with a license to kill unarmed targets on suspicion that they might be a threat to American occupying forces…

Video: Private contractors replacing American troops in both wars
RealHistoryChanne
A report says that Iraq and Afghanistan are being left to mercenaries, as the number of private contractors in both countries has risen by over a quarter – all with the approval of the White House. It has been revealed the number of private security contractors working for the U.S. war effort in Iraq and Afghanistan has greatly increased by up to 30% since President Obama came to office. While troops are being pulled out, a Pentagon report says that the number of contractors working for the US Defense Department has increased dramatically.—

Gaza and the Language of Power
By Ramzy Baroud
…Sadly, ones worse fears have actualized, where the post-Gaza massacre world and the one which existed prior are exactly the same. Israel is trying to prove that political and military might overpower all human rights reports combined, and that public opinion – which turned against Israel as it wantonly killed and wounded thousands – will eventually turn back in Israel’s favor. One does not need to be an expert in the art of propaganda to predict the public relations model that would allow Israel to deceive millions into believing that the belligerent state is in fact a victim in a sea of hostile Arabs hell-bent on subjugating the Jewish State. Thus it was hardly a deviation from the script when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a most shrewd term to depict his governments’ refusal to respect international law regarding the dismantling of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, all considered illegal under international law, specifically the Fourth Geneva Convention. He said during his recent trip to Germany that the West Bank will never be “Judenrein” a Nazi term meaning “cleansed of Jews”. And once again, Israel is resorting to its traditional propaganda (such as equating Palestinians with Nazis), drawing on people’s historical sympathies, guilt and ignorance of false analogies…

Civilians said killed, wounded in south Afghanistan
‘The airstrike killed six civilians and wounded 14 others,’ he said, adding that women and children were among the victims.
By Ismail Sameem, Reuters
The U.S. military said on Thursday it was investigating an incident in southern Afghanistan in which residents said some civilians were killed and up to 16 wounded in a possible air strike. Civilian casualties, often caused by air strikes, have been a source of great tension between U.S. and NATO-led troops, prompting the commander of foreign forces to issue new combat orders designed to reduce such incidents. The issue has led to a rift between President Hamid Karzai’s government and its Western backers, with Karzai saying foreign air strikes have caused nothing but the deaths of civilians…

Comrade Mallouh called for this commission of inquiry on July 15, 2009 when asked about recent allegations and documents raised by Farouk al-Qaddumi, Fateh general secretary, accusing Mahmoud Abbas and Mohammed Dahlan of conspiring with Israel to eliminate Arafat and other key Palestinian political leaders. He noted that the PFLP has always called for such an investigation and that it is very much needed…

Ahrar center: Israel escalated its medical neglect policy against prisoners
Palestinian Information Center
Al-Ahrar center for prisoners’ studies and human rights said Thursday that Israel escalated the policy of medical neglect pursued against Palestinian prisoners in its jails with the aim of destroying them psychologically. The center affirmed that the Israeli behavior against Palestinian prisoners became worse than ever after the capture of soldier Gilad Shalit, adding that Israel escalated its restrictions and punitive measures against them. Taliban threatens to kill captured US soldier
By AMIR SHAH, Associated Press Writer
The Taliban threatened Thursday to kill a captured American soldier unless the U.S. military stops operations in two districts of southeastern Afghanistan. The Taliban said last week they were holding the soldier, who the U.S. military earlier described as possibly being in enemy hands. Abdullah Jalali, a spokesman for Taliban commander Mawlavi Sangin, told The Associated Press in a phone interview the soldier was healthy. He said the soldier would be killed unless the U.S. stops airstrikes in Ghazni province’s Giro district and Paktika province’s Khoshamand district. Still, Jalali said the final decision about the soldier’s fate will be made by Taliban leader Mullah Omar..

III Years..
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
Today am celebrating 3 years of blogging. I am not quite sure that the word “celebrate” is an adequate one. Actually, this blog – Arab Woman Blues, was and is a far cry from any celebration. If I am to be perfectly honest – I will have to admit it out loud, that those 3 years of blogging – writing/composing more like it, have depleted and exhausted me. I never envisioned that blogging would be such a tiring endeavour. Perhaps blogging in itself is not – but the material I deal with – is. The material being Iraq and her occupation and the thousands of tragedies and woes that this occupation gave and keeps giving birth to…

The new infiltrators, and the old racism in the Zionist entity
Marcy Newman, body on the line
A couple of weeks ago al Jazeera ran Ilan Mizrahi’s four-part documentary entitled “the rise of the right” in the Zionist entity. It follows Rabbi Meir Kahane who preached ethnic cleansing until his death in 1990. One of his followers was responsible for the massacre of Palestinians praying in the ibrahimi mosque in Khalil in 1994. I think this is important viewing material because these ideas of hate and Jewish supremacy you will see below are far more wide spread among Zionist terrorist colonists occupying Palestinian land than one might imagine. And they are not only the views of a few religious zealots…

The Democrats’ Selective Amnesia on Assassination: Clinton Did It and Obama Does It Too
By Jeremy Scahill
Members of Congress have expressed outrage over the “secret” CIA assassination program that former vice president Dick Cheney allegedly ordered concealed from Congress. But this program—and the media descriptions of it—sounds a lot like the assassination policy implemented by President Bill Clinton, particularly during his second term in office. Partisan politics often require selective amnesia. Over the past decade, we have seen this amnesia take hold when it comes to many of President Bush’s most vile policies. And we are now seeing a pretty severe case overtake several leading Democrats. It makes for good speechifying to act as though all criminality began with Bush and—particularly these days—Cheney, but that is extreme intellectual dishonesty. The fact is that many of Bush’s worst policies (now being highlighted by leading Democrats) were based in some form or another in a Clinton-initiated policy or were supported by the Democrats in Congress with their votes. To name a few: the USA PATRIOT Act, the invasion of Iraq, the attack against Afghanistan, the CIA’s extraordinary rendition program, the widespread use of mercenaries and other private contractors in US war zones and warrant-less wire-tapping…

CPT observers near the Tel Rumeida area of Hebron detailed an attack on an unarmed 16-year-old boy that also saw his mother threatened and death threats launched at his father, who attempted to file a police report against the actions. Making Their Bones: The American Elite’s Bi-Partisan Murder Racket
Chris Floyd
Yesterday we wrote about the sudden-onset amnesia of our media-political class concerning the officially confirmed operations of American death squads. As we noted, official Washington is in a minor flutter at the moment over reports that Dick Cheney ordered and then concealed the existence of a planned program of targeted assassinations — a program which was supposedly never implemented and was then supposedly cancelled by Obama CIA chief Leon Panetta. We merely pointed out the well-known fact — supported by copious reportage in mainstream journals in the past eight years, not to mention proud public admissions by top government officials, including the president — that the CIA (and other agents of the United States government) had indeed been murdering people in “extrajudicial assassinations” throughout the Bush Administration. I concentrated on state murder during the Bush years because that is the ostensible focus of the current, manufactured controversy over the alleged existence of one allegedly non-operational program. However, as Jeremy Scahill points out, the Bush-Cheney murder racket was not created ex nihilo, but was a continuation and refinement of murder programs initiated by Bill Clinton…

Settler Violence Report, May/June 2009
By Ahmad Jaradat and Virginia F.
On the evening of 1 May, approximately 20 settlers from the Bat Ayin settlement north of Hebron opened fire on homes in the Palestinian village of Safa. The settlers burned a field which was planted with wheat and belongs to farmer Mohammed Husain Musleh Adi. Villagers from Safa and other nearby villages gathered after mosque loud-speakers issued notification of the violence. Residents threw stones at the settlers to protect themselves and their homes. After arriving on the scene, the Israeli military announced that the village is a closed military zone. Israeli soldiers then sat at checkpoints on the roads that lead to the village and did nothing to stop the settlers’ actions. Two weeks ago settlers from Bat Ayin also uprooted tens of olive trees on land located close to the settlement…

July Already the Deadliest Month in Afghanistan
Jason Ditz
The virtually inevitable announcement that the current month in Afghanistan has broken some sort of record for violence traditionally comes at the end of the month. This time, however, the record has already been shattered less than half of the way through July, so we’re getting the announcement out of the way early. Just two weeks into July, 46 foreign troops have already been killed, matching the number killed in August and June of 2008. The announcement hardly comes as a surprise, given the seemingly endless parade of officials predicting the situation will continue to worsen…

Obama’s neocolonial mission in Africa

Last week, President Barack Obama flew from the G8 summit in Italy to Accra, the capital of Ghana in West Africa, for his first visit to Sub-Saharan Africa since becoming president. “I have the blood of Africa within me,” he told his Ghanaian audience, “and my family’s history reflects the tragedies and triumphs of the larger African story.” The value of Obama’s family background was recognised early in his bid for the presidency by Zbigniew Brzezinski, the national security adviser to President Jimmy Carter and a key figure in the formulation of Obama’s foreign policy. In August 2007, Brzezinsky declared that Obama “recognizes that the challenge is a new face, a new sense of direction, a new definition of America’s role in the world.”…

Against a new wave of crackdown and oppression in Iran
Khiaban #24, via Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
The act of millions of demonstrators who took to the streets recently in most cities in Iran was a huge show of power by a people challenging the injustice, deceit and the constant oppression of this regime. A challenge that was answered by the exercise of violence by the anti-democratic system of the Islamic Republic and its security forces. Up to now, we have had definite reports of tens of deaths and hundreds of injured. Available reports tell of thousands of detained or disappeared among the activists and dissidents against the regime. Meanwhile, the university dormitories have been among the first targets of the forces of oppression, leading to tens of deaths and innumerable arrests of students. The widespread wave of nightly raids of and arrests in the homes of the youth, journalists and students, and the disappearance of others remind us of the fear and the terror during the 1980s..

Afghanistan detainees indefinitely confined, refusing to leave cells to shower
By Greg Jaffe and Julie Tate, The Washington Post
The prisoners at the largest U.S. detention facility in Afghanistan have refused to leave their cells to shower or exercise for the past two weeks to protest their indefinite imprisonment. The prisonwide protest, which has been going on since at least July 1, offers a rare glimpse inside a facility that is even more closed off to the public than the U.S. detention facility at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. Information about the protest came to light when the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) informed the families of several detainees that scheduled video teleconferences and visits were being canceled…

Israeli raids on Palestinian village linked to Quebec court case
Battle of Bil’in

Palestinian activists from Bil’in village say the Israeli military has raided their village almost daily this week. They claim the early morning raids are linked to a recent lawsuit filed by the village in the Quebec Superior Court. Last month Bil’in launched the lawsuit against two Montreal-based companies, Green Park International and Green Mount International, claiming they played a role in building Israeli-only settlements on Palestinian lands in Bil’in, an act they say is illegal under international law and under Canada’s Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act, established in 2000. “Israel’s military raids began exactly at the same time that we started court hearings in Canada,” says Mohammed Khatib of the Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements in Bil’in…
