Unreality Check: Amnesiac Controversy Ignores CIA’s Real Death Squads
Chris Floyd
…For more than half a decade, it has been an open, easily established, easily confirmable fact that the White House used the CIA as a death squad to kill people that it “suspected” of being terrorists. (The use of such death squads was not limited to the CIA, of course. For example, in January 2003, the Pentagon’s Special Operations Command was given the power “to kill and capture al Qaeda operatives and other terrorists,” as the Washington Times reported. Stanley McChrystal, the man appointed by Barack Obama to command the war in Afghanistan, was the commander of these Special Ops forces in Iraq for several years.) And yet here we are, in July 2009, wringing our hands over the alleged existence of “unrealized” plans to perhaps set up some kind of CIA death squad on the orders of Dick Cheney! And even this hallucination is riddled with unreality of its own: witness the emphasis on Cheney’s involvement when even the new stories make clear that Cheney was acting on the authority of a presidential directive. George W. Bush is being written out of the picture…

Gaza: prices up, business down: Malnutrition Begins to Bite
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
“No one is buying meat these days,” says Yousef Al-Jerjowi, sitting next to his butcher shop devoid of customers. “There are some people who buy frozen meat, because it’s much cheaper: 20 shekels (five dollars) per kilo versus 60 shekels for fresh beef.” According to the 45-year-old father of ten, while business is in general terrible, the better days are early in the month, when those with salaried jobs often receive their pay. “On average, I might make 200 shekels a day in the first five days of the new month. Before the siege, it was 450 shekels a day. I do have some more regular customers. But they have no money. They keep a tab, and pay when they can.”…

Afghanistan Civilians View Taliban as Liberators
Andrew Moran
…In a published report that was released on Monday, many civilians in Afghanistan look to the Taliban for aid and in some regions within Afghanistan many of the populace view the Taliban as liberators rather than oppressors.
In an Associated Press report, “Afghans across the country complain bitterly about the country’s police, whose junior ranks earn only about $150 a month. Police pad their salaries by demanding bribes at checkpoints or kickbacks to investigate complaints, and police in opium poppy-growing regions turn a blind eye to drug smuggling for a cut of the profits, many Afghans complain.”
The report continued, “A 2007 International Crisis Group report entitled ‘Reforming Afghanistan’s Police’ found that Afghans often view the police ‘more as a source of fear than of security.’ It said ending corruption was critical if police were to provide a ‘professional, consistent service to citizens.” ..

Congress Objects to CIA Lies But Not Torture and Murder?
By Sherwood Ross
Why are some members of Congress suddenly upset the CIA lied to them when the Agency has been guilty of innumerable crimes that are far worse? Is Congress saying, “It’s okay to do what you’re doing, just don’t lie to us about it?” When accused of a crime in the newspapers, Jesse James used to write reporters, “I wasn’t there.” Yet it was not lying that he was hunted down for but bank robbery and murder. Back in 1967, the CIA’s own Inspector General produced a 133-page internal report that implicated “every living CIA officer who has served as chief of the clandestine service----Allen Dulles, Richard Bissell, Richard Helms, and Desmond FitzGerald---in conspiracies to commit murder,” writes investigative journalist Tim Weiner in his book “Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA”(Anchor Books). That was 40 years ago, and the CIA’s path has been downhill ever since…

Israeli soldiers admit ‘shoot first’ policy in Gaza offensive
Ian Black
Israeli soldiers who served in the Gaza Strip during the offensive of December and January have spoken out about being ordered to shoot without hesitation, destroying houses and mosques with a general disregard for Palestinian lives. In testimony that will fuel international and Arab demands for war crime investigations, 30 combat soldiers report that the army’s priority was to minimise its own casualties to maintain Israeli public support for the three-week Operation Cast Lead…

Uighur vs Afghan: A study in contrasts
Eric Walberg
…The Uighurs and Tibetans have old and unique cultures which the Chinese would do well to respect and nurture within greater China. But supporting the independence struggle is part of a cynical geopolitical chess game, and merely worsens the Uighurs’ plight. We are reminded of Britain’s scheming there in the 19th century. If Britain had stood by the Uighurs then, there would probably be an Uighuristan today. Instead, the destruction of Urumqi and the Old City in Kashgar continue. The latter will soon be a theme park where Uighurs will dress up and sell Han tourists plastic souvenirs. Classic colonialism. However, Chinese colonialism — Veni, vidi, vici — pales in comparison to the US/ British variant in nearby Afghanistan — We came, destroy, and murder in the name of freedom. It is galling for Western media to take such delight in exposing China’s dirty linen, as it slavishly hails US neo-imperial ventures in Iraq and Afghanistan. As Uighurs riot, US drones massacre hundreds of innocent Afghans and Pakistanis, and Obama sends thousands more troops to Afghanistan in a mission that makes China’s arrogant encroachment on Eastern Turkistan look like an act of selfless generosity…

Israel escalates racist actions in occupied Palestine
Palestine Return Centre (PRC)
Palestine Return Centre (PRC) expressed deep anxiety towards Israeli practises in occupied Palestinian territories. International laws, UN resolutions, International court of justice, 4th Geneva conventions and many other charters are being repeatedly and clearly violated by Israel which is meet with a lamentable silence by the International community as well as the Arab and the Muslim world. With the coming of the recent Israeli government, more racial practises are committed against Palestinians. Judaising Jerusalem through ethnic cleansing forceful expulsion of Palestinians is unremitting. In an effort to deny the culture and history of Palestinians a shameful decision was made yesterday by the Israeli government to change names of Arabic cities into Hebrew…

Iraq’s Poorest Finding it Harder to Survive
By Sarah Price and Nizar Latif
Asime is 13 and lives in east Baghdad. He has lost both his parents in the last two years, and is now taking care of a sick uncle. With no job opportunities and insufficient help from the Iraqi government, he has had to turn to crime to survive. He hates to steal, but knows that without this, he and his uncle will starve. “My father died two years ago and then my mother died six months later, so my uncle took me in,” he says. “He is poor, but said he wanted me with him because he doesn’t have any children, and he knew the orphanage couldn’t care for me well. But now, my uncle is seriously ill and cannot work. So, now I have to steal – from shops, or from older people. I steal valuable things, because they can be sold for money…

Judge allows delay in release of ‘disturbing’ CIA torture report
Daniel Tencer
A 2004 internal CIA report into the agency’s torture practices must see the light of day by August 24, a federal judge has ordered, essentially granting an Obama administration request for a delay in making the document public. The document, which details torture practices and evidently questions the usefulness of “enhanced interrogation,” is considered so “disturbing” that it may have been what prompted Attorney-General Eric Holder to mull a special prosecutor for alleged torture-related crimes during the Bush administration…

IDF soldier: We used Palestinians as human shields
Amos Harel, Ha’aretz
The Israel Defense Forces used Palestinians as human shields during Operation Cast Lead last January despite a 2005 High Court ruling outlawing the practice, a Golani brigade soldier says. He says he did not see Palestinians being used as human shields but was told by his commanders that this occurred. The soldier says his unit employed a variation of the practice, the so-called “neighbor procedure,” when it checked homes for Palestinian militants. The soldier’s testimony appears in a collection of accounts being published this week by Breaking the Silence, an organization that collects IDF soldiers’ testimony on human rights abuses by the military. The Golani soldier gave similar testimony in a meeting with a Haaretz reporter…

British government accused in parliament of “outsourcing” torture
By Steve James
The British government has been accused by Conservative MP David Davis of outsourcing the torture of Rangzieb Ahmed, from Rochdale, to the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence directorate (ISI) in 2006. The case is the latest, and one of the most damaging, of up to 29 cases in which British security services have been accused of colluding directly in the torture of British citizens and residents. Using parliamentary privilege, on July 8, Davis, a right-wing Tory who has refashioned himself as a defender of civil liberties, outlined the circumstances in which the British government, the security agency MI5 and the Greater Manchester police conspired to hand over Ahmed to the ISI with the clear knowledge that he would be tortured…

Death Toll Apparently Far Exceeds Iran’s Government Claims
International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran
Information from Iranian hospitals and victims’ families indicates that the number of demonstrators killed by security officers and militia during demonstrations to protest Iran’s disputed 12 June presidential election far exceeds government reports, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran stated. The Campaign has ascertained that on 20 June, when the government reported that 11 protesters had been killed, three Tehran hospitals placed a total of 34 corpses of demonstrators in their morgues: Imam Khomeini Hospital had 19 bodies; Rasool Akram Hospital, 8 bodies; and Loghman Hospital, 7 bodies. The information was collected by medical staff with access to the morgue records of these hospitals…

Palestine Between US-Israel Dictate and Fatah Conflict
Kawther Salam
Politics is a filthy and immoral game, and all politicians are liars and blood suckers. In the Middle East, these immoral politicians have turned Palestine into a field of political experiments, into a cheap collective political bargaining tool, the so-called “peace process”. Between the criminals of US-Israel, the corrupt Arab regimes, the European countries, the foreign intelligence systems, even the Palestinian-Palestinian conflict of Fatah-Fatah and Fatah-Hamas, Palestine and the legitimate rights of Palestinians are lost. I do not see any difference between all the politicians, from whatever side, who are activate in one way or another in Palestine. They are all accomplice of genocide, of endless violations of human rights, and of crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people. The conflicts of the Palestinians themselves, Fatah vs. Fatah and Fatah vs. Mahmoud AbbasHamas, parties who both consider themselves the biggest political parties in Palestine, Jihad, Popular Committee, and other Palestinian parties and factions are guilty of grave crimes against the Palestinian people, since they have turned their resistance against the Israeli occupation into criminal fights between themselves in order to reach illusory power under the occupation…

Ma’an News
The Palestinian Authority (PA) decided on Wednesday to sue the popular Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera station and shut down its offices in the West Bank, accusing them of “incitement and false information.”…There is speculation that the suit is related to comments aired by the station on Tuesday by senior Fatah member Farouq Qaddoumi, who accused Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of involvement in alleged plot to kill Yasser Arafat…

Israeli soldiers reveal the brutal truth of Gaza attack
By Donald Macintyre in Jerusalem
Israeli troops were repeatedly encouraged by officers to prioritise their own safety over that of Palestinian civilians when they embarked on the ground invasion of Gaza in January, according to the first direct testimonies of soldiers who served in the operation. The picture that emerges from the testimonies, which have been seen by The Independent, is one of massive fire power to cover advances and rules of engagement that were calculated to ensure, in the words attributed to one battalion commander, that “not a hair will fall of a soldier of mine. I am not willing to allow a soldier of mine to risk himself by hesitating. If you are not sure, shoot.”..

‘Government Sachs’ Strikes Gold … Again
By Robert Scheer
Connect the dots: Goldman Sachs made $3.44 billion in profit this past quarter, while the U.S deficit topped $1 trillion for the first time in the nation’s history and appeared to be headed toward doubling that figure before the budget year is out. Since most of the increase in the federal deficit is due to bailing out the banks and salvaging the greater economy they helped destroy, why is the top investment bank doing so well? Well, because that was the plan, as devised by Bush Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, a former CEO of Goldman Sachs. Remember that Lehman Brothers, Goldman’s competitor, was allowed to go bankrupt…

Mass Murder Confirmed
Irish4Palestine
…Members of the most “moral” army in the world recently published reports covering how they were encouraged to murder Palestinians for the Mother Land Israel. Although I have no clue why reporters, or anyone else for that matter, bother to even ask any Israeli official for a response as it’s always the same. Right on que Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak replied (Can you guess the answer folks?) “Criticism directed at the IDF by one organization or another is inappropriate and is directed at the wrong place.”…

Ex-Clinton aides advising Honduran coup regime
By Bill Van Auken
Ever since the military abducted President Manuel Zelaya at gunpoint on June 28 and expelled him from the country, the Obama administration has cast itself as a steadfast defender of “democracy” in Honduras. The real nature of that defense has become somewhat clearer with the news that key former aides to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, have surfaced as top advisers to the illegal regime led by Roberto Micheletti, which was installed by the coup…

Former Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, New York City Councilman Charles Barron and Dead Prez rapper M-1 are among the 200 delegates who are attempting to deliver humanitarian aid.
