Report: Bush admin. skirted probe of mass Afghan slayings - Obama administration sees no legal basis for investigation
Stephen C. Webster
When CIA-backed Afghan warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum had up to ’several thousand’ Taliban prisoners sealed and suffocated to death in metal shipping containers just days after the United States invaded the country, it did not go unnoticed by the White House. They simply chose not to do anything about it and quietly worked to discourage efforts to uncover the truth, according to a late Friday report by The New York Times…

Statement by Physicians for Human Rights in Response to Comments by Obama Administration Officials
Physicians for Human Rights
…”For US Government officials to claim that there is no legal basis to investigate this well-documented mass atrocity is absurd,” stated Physicians for Human Rights Deputy Director Susannah Sirkin. “US military and intelligence personnel were operating jointly and accepted the surrender of the prisoners jointly with General Dostum’s forces in northern Afghanistan. The Obama Administration has a legal obligation to determine what US officials knew, where US personnel were, what involvement they had, and the actions of US allies during and after the massacre. These questions, nearly eight years later, remain unanswered.” “Furthermore,” added Nathaniel Raymond, PHR’s lead researcher on the Dasht-e-Leili case, “The New York Times has shown that the Bush Administration engaged in a coordinated effort to prevent this alleged war crime from ever being investigated. Under the Geneva Conventions, the cover-up of a war crime can itself constitute a war crime.”…

Video: War Crimes and the White House: The Bush Administration’s Cover-Up of the Dasht-e-Leili Massacre
Ben Greenberg, Physicians for Human Rights
Physicians for Human Rights has issued a call for a criminal probe in the wake of a major New York Times story by James Risen with new evidence that the Bush Administration impeded at least three federal investigations into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan in 2002. PHR is calling for the Department of Justice to investigate why the Bush Administration impeded an FBI criminal probe of the alleged Dasht-e-Leili massacre. According to US government documents obtained by PHR, as many as 2,000 surrendered Taliban fighters were reportedly suffocated in container trucks by Afghan forces operating jointly with the US in November 2001…

Netanyahu turns to Nazi language
The Israeli prime minister’s use of the word ‘Judenrein’ is a cynical attempt to skew the fight over West Bank settlements
Peter Beaumont
There are words with meanings corrosive as acid. Heavy with the stench of historic crimes. Words that damn those who use them. One such word is “Judenrein”, the Nazi-era word that means “cleansed of Jews”. It is a surprise, then, to learn that it is a word that has been appropriated by Binyamin Netanyahu to describe the Palestinian demand for the dismantling of the Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. More shocking still, according to reports yesterday, it was used in talks between Netanyahu and Germany’s Frank-Walter Steinmeier, foreign minister of a country still haunted by the guilt of its Nazi past – who was compelled to nod in embarrassed silence…

Another 5th illegal Birthday
Palestine Monitor
Five years have passed since the International Court of Justice’s ruling that the Apartheid Wall that Israel is constructing inside the West Bank is illegal. However, Israel has continued construction of the wall and it has become a symbol of Israel’s disrespect for international law and also of the failure of the international community to uphold this ruling. The ruling was clear and unambiguous—it stated that the wall’s construction is illegal, that Israel must stop construction immediately, it must dismantle the sections already built, return confiscated properties, and compensate those Palestinians directly affected by the wall…

Barghouthi: Our people insist on ending the longest occupation in modern history
Palestinian Information Center
Dr. Mustafa Al-Barghouthi, the head of the Palestinian national initiative and a prominent Palestinian lawmaker, stressed Friday that the Palestinian people are determined to end the longest occupation in modern history and restore their freedom and independence. These remarks came during the weekly anti-wall protest held in the village of Bil’in on the fifth anniversary of the decision issued by the international court of justice in The Hague which criminalized the construction of the apartheid wall and demanded Israel to tear it down…

5 NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan
Xinhua
Five soldiers of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed in Afghanistan’s troubled southern region, according to a press release of the alliance on Saturday.”Five international Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service members were killed in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) strike in southern Afghanistan on July 10,” the press release said. The Tragedy of the Left’s Discourse on Iran
By Saeed Rahnema
…The left has historically been rooted in solidarity with progressive movements, women’s rights and rights for unions and its voice has been first and foremost a call for freedom. The voices that we hear today from part of the Left are tragically reactionary. Siding with religious fundamentalists with the wrong assumptions that they are anti-imperialists and anti-capitalists, is aligning with the most reactionary forces of history. This is a reactionary left, different from the progressive left which has always been on the side of the forces of progress…

Barack Obama or Cynthia McKinney — Who Represents Black America Toward Palestine, Israel and the Middle East?
by BAR managing editor Bruce Dixon
Former congresswoman Cynthia McKinney has just returned from an Israeli jail where she was briefly imprisoned, along with human rights activists from several nations, for her second attempt at publicly running the brutal US-Israeli blockade trying to bring coloring books, food and medical supplies. Why are the US and Israel imposing this collective punishment upon 1.5 million civilians. How does McKinney’s stand match up against that of our first black president, the most powerful man in the world who calls it a “humantarian crisis” but will do nothing about it? And how do they both stack up against the legacy of Dr. King?…

“Reckless” to sail in international waters – official
Stuart Littlewood
I thought I would share this with you. Britain’s foreign secretary David Miliband – or rather, a henchman on his behalf – has written to me about the government’s response to Israel’s hijacking of the mercy ship Spirit of Humanity on the high seas and the outrageous treatment of six peace-loving British citizens (including the skipper), en route to Gaza not Israel, who had their gear stolen or damaged and were thrown into Israeli jails. The letter contains the usual wet and meaningless expressions like deplore and press and raise the issue, which are the familiar hallmark of Foreign Office mentality. And I’m told it is “reckless” to travel in international waters. It should, of course, be safe – and would be if the high and mighty Western allies, always talking big against terror, were to enforce maritime law and rid the Eastern Mediterranean of marauding Israeli pirates…

Taliban losing, says Britain as Afghanistan toll mounts
AFP
The head of Britain’s military insisted the Taliban were losing the fight in Afghanistan, as London reflected Saturday on one of the most tragic days for its troops in decades. Air Chief Marshal Jock Stirrup admitted it was “tough going” in Afghanistan after eight soldiers were killed within 24 hours, taking the British military death toll higher than in Iraq. The spike in fatalities means Britain has now lost 184 troops in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001 — surpassing the 179 killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003…

Medics identify 1,505th victim of Gaza assault
Ma’an News
The corpse of a Palestinian was found on Saturday under the rubble of a house destroyed during the latest Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip last winter. Palestinian medics identified the man as Abdallah Na’im, who was in his 20s. Mu’wieyah Hasaneen, head of Emergency and Ambulance Services at the Health Ministry in Gaza, told Ma’an that “the decomposed body was found under the rubble of a destroyed house near the Wa’ed building,” which itself stood near the Islamic University campus in Gaza City, but was destroyed by Israeli aircraft…

To end nuclear standoff, Iran works on new proposals
PressTV
The top diplomat for the government in Tehran has touched on Iranian plans to resolve the dispute over its nuclear program. Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Saturday that Tehran had begun work on a new package of proposals that will be put forward to the West. “We are formulating a new package, which covers a range of political, security and international issues and can be a basis for talks on regional and international affairs,” he said in a press conference with his Omani counterpart Bin Alawi in Tehran…

GIVE US OUR MONEY BACK
Irish4Palestine
Egypt is to burn up all the accumulated aid for Gaza that has sat at the border to rot because Israel won’t allow it to be delivered to the people who need it.The way I see it, Israel and Egypt owe every single person who donated money, food, clothing or any type of aid. Some one should take a worldwide class action law suit against the two countries for the cost of the aid they will now destroy! If they can’t deliver, they should give the world our money back…

IRS ROLE IN MADOFF SCANDAL BEARS EXAMINATION
By Sherwood Ross
The Internal Revenue Service(IRS) has collected “untold billions” of tax dollars from investors swindled by fraudster Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi based on “earnings” that never existed. That’s the view of Lawrence Velvel, dean of the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover, who says IRS “had no constitutional right to tax (Madoff investors) because the Sixteenth Amendment allows it only to tax ‘income,’ not ‘phantom income.’” Madoff, since convicted, told his investors their “profits” were the result of his trades in their behalf when, in fact, he never made the trades but paid them from monies swindled from new investors…

Hamas, Fatah trade accusations over opponent arrests
Xinhua
Islamic Hamas movement and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party are still tracking down each other’s supporters in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, the two rivals said Saturday. The politically-motivated arrests continued though Egyptian security mediators have been staying in the West Bank, trying to pave the way for holding a new talk session between Hamas and Fatah. Hamas, which controls Gaza, has arrested 41 members of Fatah and former members of pro-Abbas forces in Khan Younis city in southern Gaza Strip, Fatah said in a statement sent to the media…

Gaza’s children struggle with memories of war

Honduras: US-backed mediation legitimizes military coup
By Bill Van Auken
The talks convened in the Costa Rican capital San José on Thursday with the purported aim of resolving the political crisis unleashed by the June 28 coup in neighboring Honduras, are shaping up as a farce. The apparent object of this fraudulent exercise is to legitimize the military overthrow of the elected president of Honduras and realize the aims of Washington and the predominant sections of the right-wing Honduran oligarchy. Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, who last month was seized by troops, bundled onto an airplane and flown to San José and exile, returned to the Costa Rican capital Wednesday and was the first to hold talks the next day with the US-designated mediator, Costa Rican President Óscar Arias…

OCHA: Israeli separation wall to expropriate 9.5% of West Bank area
Palestinian Information Center
The UN office for coordination of humanitarian affairs in the occupied Palestinian lands (OCHA) said in a report that the Israeli separation wall would confiscate 9.5% of the West Bank area. The report distributed on Friday by OCHA office in Cairo revealed that the length of the wall would reach 709 kilometers, which is double the length of the armistice line (green line) of 1948 between the West Bank and the Hebrew state…

HR 2749 – An Agribusiness Empowering Act
Stephen Lendman
America is the truest example of what George Bernard Shaw meant when he said “Democracy is a form of government that substitutes election by the incompetent many for the appointment by the corrupt few.” Obama is upholding the tradition and then some. In fact, in less than six months, he’s done the impossible. With congressional Democrats, he’s compiled a worse record than even his fiercest critics feared, worse than George Bush, straight across the board on both domestic and foreign policies that include: — looting the nation’s wealth, wrecking the economy, and consigning growing millions to impoverishment without jobs, homes, savings, social services, or futures; — proposing greater Fed empowerment and global monetary control, disguised as financial reform…
