This Shame is Yours.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
So what’s with this endless torture business in Iraq ? Fawziya al-Jashami said she had seen “horrific traces” of torture during a visit to a prison in the southern Province of Babel of which Hilla is the capital. “I saw types of torture which are so vicious and horrific that I cannot describe them as a woman. “It is a kind of sexual torture which one is ashamed to talk about and occurs for the first time in Iraq,” Jashami, who heads the Human Rights Committee in the province, said. …Hey, I thought the “Tyrant” and his regime were the ones who tortured…Did you not tell us about humans minced in meat machines then? Of course, all came out to be lies. But now, today, this hour, this minute, is where real torture is taking place in “democratic and free Iraq.” I’ve written about Torture before, and I did mention Iraq’s underworld. Out of sight, out of mind… Well, thank you Fawzia Al-Jashami, for your courage. As an Iraqi woman, today, in “free Iraq” it must have been very difficult for you to even utter the lines you did… But please Fawzia, don’t be shy, timid, nor ashamed. Call things by their names. Leave aside your “pudeur – your “modesty”, erase it from your dictionary of morals. In today’s Iraq there are no morals left. So why are you so worried about words ?…

Land Theft with False Justifications
Adib Kawar
Arabs call the very Zionist Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, “Nitin ya ho” that is “O you the dirty”, but we disagree to a certain extent, because unlike other Zionist politicians, he at least speaks his dirty plans out in the open and says what is going in his head. He openly declares his plans about stealing all of Palestine’s land, and in the end he wants to complete the Zionist ethnic cleansing project that started in 1948, and still continues up to this date, other Zionist politicians were doing the dirty work while giving a form of sweet talk…

Release Of The “Holy Grail” Of Torture Reports Delayed Again
ANDY WORTHINGTON
Today was supposed to be the day that the Justice Department — after two delays — released an unclassified version of the CIA Inspector General’s 2004 Report into the interrogations of “high-value detainees” in the “War on Terror,” which Democrat Congressional staffers described as the “holy grail,” according to Greg Sargent of the Plum Line, writing in May, “because it is expected to detail torture in unprecedented detail and to cast doubt on the claim that torture works.”…

THE PIRATES OF ZION: OBAMA MISSES THE BOAT!
By Alan Sabrosky*
Israel’s boarding and capture in international waters of The Spirit of Humanity, an unarmed boat carrying relief supplies to the suffering people of Gaza, shows that state-sponsored piracy is a real peril today. It is just one more breach of international law added to the global “rap sheet” of a rogue state that, as Netanyahu remarked a few weeks ago, is not like other countries. But Israel’s capture of this boat was also Netanyahu’s test of Obama’s resolve – a test Obama failed, to his shame and discredit…

Giving Honduras the Haiti Treatment
A Black Agenda Radio Commentary by Glen Ford
President Obama has joined all of Latin American in denouncing the coup in Honduras. But Washington’s words should always be taken “with whole spoonfuls of salt.” Obama could restore democracy to Haiti immediately, if he chose to, by allowing the return of deposed President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, but instead shuts Aristide’s party out of recent Senatorial elections. President Zalaya “was aligning himself with Venezuela, Nicaragua, El Salvador and other left-led nations… It is inconceivable that the U.S. looks forward” to his return…

We are NOT the “Story”, It’s Not Just Our 21 Kidnapped Passengers
Free Gaza Team
On June 30th 2009 Israeli Occupation Forces forcibly boarded the Free Gaza boat, SPIRIT OF HUMANITY, and kidnapped 21 human rights workers and journalists who were on their way to deliver much needed humanitarian and reconstruction supplies to besieged Gaza. Those abducted by Israel include Nobel peace prize laureate Mairead Maguire and former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. Since their kidnapping, tens-of-thousands of people around the world have mobilized to demand their immediate and unconditional release. The Free Gaza Movement would like to thank everyone who has made a phone call, sent a fax or email, written a letter, or organized a demonstration on behalf of our 21 imprisoned friends…

Free Gaza Movement: Advice for people in USA from Donna Baranski-Walker
Free Gaza Team
Yesterday, the Israeli Navy boarded the Free Gaza Movement boat, SPIRIT OF HUMANITY and kidnapped the 21 human rights activists, humanitarian workers and activists on their way to Gaza. As of today, none of them have had the right to see an attorney even though they came to the detention center to see them. The Free Gaza Movement is calling for their release and the release of our boat, seized in international waters off the coast of Gaza as our SPOT locator clearly shows. But more importantly, twenty-one internationals can get headlines. What about the 11,000 Palestinians who languish in jail, many of them tortured. We will update you on the status of our kidnapped passengers and our impounded boat, but who will do the same for the Palestinians and their boats?…

Amnesty accuses Israel of using human shields in Gaza
Leigh Baldwin
Amnesty International on Thursday accused Israeli forces of war crimes, saying they used children as human shields and conducted wanton attacks on civilians during their offensive in the Gaza Strip. The London-based human rights group also accused Hamas of war crimes, but said it found no evidence that the Islamist rulers of Gaza used civilians as human shields during the 22-day offensive Israel launched on December 28. It also reiterated its call for an international arms embargo against Israel…

Waging War Upon Our Friends
Peter Chamberlin
…The attacks in N. Waziristan by Gul Bahadur and the artillery strikes upon Nazir’s headquarters, both a bi-product of the Predator prevarications, as well as the recent assassination of Pakistan’s other “ace in the hole, Qari Zainuddin, have destroyed Pakistan’s last chance to restore the writ of the state without resorting to all-out civil war. Either Gen. Kayani submits entirely to Obama’s will, including the planned submission to Indian domination afterwards, or he stands-up to the United States, meaning he stops the drone attacks and reveals the entire ugly scenario that the CIA cannot allow anyone to reveal. “Al Qaida” is fake. The war on terror is a fraud…

Israeli naval abductions and shooting at Palestinian fishermen: it’s routine
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
“They told us ‘go west or we will shoot you’,” says Ashraf Sadallah. “Initially, we refused, so they began shooting very close all around our boat.” At 6am on Jun. 16, Sadallah and his brother Abdel Hadi Sadallah, in their early twenties, went roughly 400 metres out to sea off the coast of Sudaniya in Gaza’s northwest. “We wanted to bring in nets we had left out the night before,” says Sadallah. Their small fishing boat, known as a hassaka, was in Palestinian fishing waters when three Israeli navy boats approached the brothers…

Zionist narratives of Palestinian land
Marcy Newman, body on the line
Navigating Palestine can be a difficult task given that the land has been so judaized so that villages are covered up with forests and colonies and the names altered so as to cover up the crimes committed by Zionists over the years. One of the people who has eased this process is Salman Abu Sitta whose book the return journey: a guide to the depopulated and present Palestinian towns and villages and holy sites is an indispensable tool. This book, which has all the necessary place names in Hebrew, Arabic, and English maps Palestinian villages onto a Zionist colonist map to aid people in finding the remnants of Palestinian villages as well as navigating Zionist roads…

Mir Hossein Mousavi calls Iranian government illegitimate
Ian Black
Iran’s defeated presidential challenger, Mir Hossein Mousavi, declared today that he considered Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s new government illegitimate, and called for protests to continue. In a defiant statement posted on his website, the moderate leader also called for the release of detained “children of the revolution” – a reference to reformist figures arrested since the 12 June poll. Iran’s national police chief said 1,032 people had been detained and most freed. The rest had been “referred to the public and revolutionary courts”…

Xe-Blackwater Personnel Shot Iraqi Children, Others in Multiple Incidents, According to Burke O’Neil LLC
PR Newswire Association LLC
A spate of unprovoked civilian shootings by Xe-Blackwater personnel in Iraq between 2005 and 2008 are detailed in an amended lawsuit filed late Tuesday in Virginia federal court, according to the Washington, D.C. law firm that represents the families of those killed and wounded in the incidents. The new allegations against several Blackwater-related defendants – now operating as Xe and other names under the control of chairman Erik Prince – include: * the shooting of three Iraqi families in a mini-van that killed nine-year-old Akram Khalid Sa’ed Jasim and wounded his three-month-old sister, who was shot in the face, his mother, his father, and uncle in July 2007; * the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Suhad Shakir Fadhil as she was driving home from work in the so-called Green Zone in February 2007…

IOF troops block firefighters from extinguishing fire in Palestinian land
Palestinian Information Center
Israeli occupation forces on Tuesday night blocked Palestinian firefighters from reaching cultivated lands of Anin village, Jenin district, to extinguish a fire that started at a late night hour and continued till Wednesday morning. The village’s municipal council made contacts with a number of parties to urge the IOF to allow fire brigades into the lands cultivated with olive and almond trees because the village inhabitants could not reach their lands after the Israeli separation wall had separated them from their lands…

Lean Cuisine: Counting Calories On the Checkpoint Diet
Chris Floyd
Remember, no matter what the facts say, just keep repeating to yourself: This is not a ghetto. This is not a ghetto. This is not a ghetto… A West Bank checkpoint managed by a private security company is not allowing Palestinians to pass through with large water bottles and some food items, Haaretz has learned… The private security company Modi’in Ezrahi…stops Palestinian workers from passing through the checkpoint with the following items: Large bottles of frozen water, large bottles of soft drinks, home-cooked food, coffee, tea and the spice zaatar…

Michael Hudson’s “Super Imperialism: The Economic Strategy of Imperial America”
by Stephen Lendman
First written in 1972, it was updated in a 2003 edition that’s every bit as relevant now – thus this review focusing on Hudson’s new preface, introduction, and detailed account of the book’s theme. He revisited it in his 2008-09 Project Censored award- winning article titled: “Economic Meltdown – The ‘Dollar Glut’ is What Finances America’s Global Military Build-up” in which he explains the following – the “inter-related dynamics” of: — “surplus (US) dollars pouring into the rest of the world for yet further financial speculation and corporate takeovers;” — global central banks “recyl(ing) these dollar inflows (into) US Treasury bonds to finance the federal US budget deficit; and most important (but most suppressed in the US media),”— “the military character of the US payments deficit and the domestic federal budget deficit.”..

A Secret History of Dissent in the All-Volunteer Military
Tom Engelhardt & Dahr Jamail
On May 1st at Fort Hood in central Texas, Specialist Victor Agosto wrote on a counseling statement, which is actually a punitive U.S. Army memo: “There is no way I will deploy to Afghanistan. The occupation is immoral and unjust. It does not make the American people any safer. It has the opposite effect.” Ten days later, he refused to obey a direct order from his company commander to prepare to deploy and was issued a second counseling statement. On that one he wrote, “I will not obey any orders I deem to be immoral or illegal.” Shortly thereafter, he told a reporter, “I’m not willing to participate in this occupation, knowing it is completely wrong. It’s a matter of what I’m willing to live with.”..

“ARE YOU A SUBVERSIVE?”
Desertpeace
…Little did that Immigration Officer know, but in the United States I WAS considered a subversive… in fact, I carried with me a ten page document of allegations against me from Army ‘Intelligence’ which ended with the words “Your entrance into any branch of the Armed Forces at any time would be detrimental to the security of our nation.” How much more of a ’subversive’ can one hope to be? It would be ’safe’ to say that I owe my life to the FBI. The document I mentioned above was full of information provided by them. Their ‘planted’ informants knew the exact date and time that I joined the Communist Party of the United States. They knew every move I made during all my years of activity…

Amnon Kapeliouk (1931-2009) Est Mort
An extraordinary Journalist
Franklin Lamb
Israeli jounalist Amnon Kapeliouk was my kind of Journalist and my kind of Jew. Sadly, he died the other day and was buried near his birth place in West Jerusalem. For more than 40 years Kapeliouk reported on Palestinian and Arab affairs for half a dozen newspapers and was an old school Robert Fisk- Janet Stevens’s type journalist for whom reporting meant getting to the scene fast and carefully scribing with pencil and note pad. I knew Kapeliouk mainly through his writings and a dozen or so path crossings over the years following our first improbable encounter during the infamous Beirut summer 1982. Those months of US-armed Israeli carnage, which continue to shape the region, left him with an indelible scar. He once told me: “I can’t forget. It doesn’t fade. I don’t think it ever will.” I understood what he meant. In his last communication he said he would try to attend the 27th Anniversary Memorial to the victims of the Sabra-Shatila Massacre set for this coming September 16-18 at Beirut’s Shatila Camp…
