Dexter’s Legions: The “Good” Killers of the “Good” War
Chris Floyd
…On Friday, an internal investigation by the Pentagon into the American airstrike with B1 bombers on villages in Afghanistan’s Farah province in May was released. [For more on the attack, which Afghan officials say killed more than 140 civilians, see “Tales of Yankee Power.”] As McClatchy reports, the Pentagon — which at first denied that any civilians were killed — now admits outright that it sure enough killed 26 civilians…and might well have actually blown 86 hunks of collateral damage to smithereens. This comes after weeks of high-octane weaseling from American officials — including the grand LOCO warlord himself, General David Douglas MacArthur Petraeus, who at one point announced that he had video proof that our boys had only been killing dirty rotten terrorist ragheads hidden amongst so-called civilians who might have been giving the insurgents shelter and who anyway like to lie about how many of their family members get killed in these essential raids — or words to that effect. Needless to say, this documentary evidence has not been forthcoming: much like the documentary evidence that Colin Powell once promised would show the world that the 9/11 attacks had come from Afghanistan, with Taliban complicity. This dossier of “evidence” — i.e., the supposed casus belli justifying the entire American military operation in Afghanistan — has never seen the light of day, and never will. It was just like the murky photograpsh and sinister-looking vials that Powell later! waved a round the UN to “justify” the invasion of Iraq: a PR prop, part of “rolling out the product” to sell a war already planned…

Iran, Gucci anti-imperialism and movement anti-intellectuals
Gabriel Ash
…Let us begin with “the Gucci crowd” of North Teheran… To use this phrase today against millions of working people who have marched for days facing state violence and even live ammunition is deeply offensive, and those who use that phrase, however much they take issue with the politics of the marchers, should be ashamed of themselves. Besides, it sounds very much the camel does not see the crookedness of his own neck. Those who have used this phrase probably own more iPhones than the people about whom this phrased was used. Perhaps we need to talk about Gucci anti-imperialism first…As outside observers it is not our role to decide between Ahmadinejad and Mousavi. Nor it is our role to certify or decertify the elections or solve the legitimation crisis of the Iranian state. It is reasonably clear that much of the popular support behind Ahmadinejad is based on legitimate concerns and claims, including fears that Mousawi wished to deepen exploitation and collaborate with the West. It should be equally clear that the millions of working people who are now braving state violence in the streets also have legitimate concerns and claims, including true self-determination, which is not only freedom from U.S. imperialism, but also freedom from state violence and basic civil rights, including the right to form independent trade unions and parties that militate for real economic transformation and not just palliative populism. As outside observers, we have two obligations now.! First, we need to keep our own states from using the events in Iran to advance imperialist stratagems. But we also need to show solidarity with the struggle for greater freedom in Iran. And not much is demanded from us…

Confidential memo reveals US plan to provoke an invasion of Iraq
# Jamie Doward, Gaby Hinsliff and Mark Townsend
A confidential record of a meeting between President Bush and Tony Blair before the invasion of Iraq, outlining their intention to go to war without a second United Nations resolution, will be an explosive issue for the official inquiry into the UK’s role in toppling Saddam Hussein. The memo, written on 31 January 2003, almost two months before the invasion and seen by the Observer, confirms that as the two men became increasingly aware UN inspectors would fail to find weapons of mass destruction (WMD) they had to contemplate alternative scenarios that might trigger a second resolution legitimising military action…

Iran’s Guardian Council: Over 100% voted in 50 cities
PressTV
Iran’s Guardian Council has admitted that the number of votes collected in 50 cities surpass the number of those eligible to cast ballot in those areas. The council’s Spokesman Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei, who was speaking on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Channel 2 on Sunday, made the remarks in response to complaints filed by Mohsen Rezaei — a defeated candidate in the June 12 Presidential election. “Statistics provided by Mohsen Rezaei in which he claims more than 100% of those eligible have cast their ballot in 170 cities are not accurate — the incident has happened in only 50 cities,” Kadkhodaei said. The spokesman, however, said that although the vote tally affected by such an irregularity is over 3 million, “it has yet to be determined whether the amount is decisive in the election results,” reported Khabaronline…

The agony of Iraq’s Palestinians
By Nisreen El-Shamayleh
The Palestinian refugees of Iraq, who became victims of persecution and violence before being chased from their Baghdad homes after the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, are among the world’s most vulnerable communities. The tents of al-Waleed camp in the deserts of Iraq near the Syrian border offer the only home to about 1,500 Palestinian refugees who had been living in the Iraqi capital. The isolated camp was set up in 2006 by the refugees themselves as they had nowhere to flee to except the closest no-man’s land…

Iraq, and Bush’s Bizarre Fake UN Spy Plane Plot, Back In The News
ukit, Daily Kos
…Brown tried to put the best face on things, billing the effort as part of a “new era of transparency,” following the humiliating, ongoing “expenses” scandal which has pretty much destroyed out any remaining confidence in the government. Any pretense of transparency, however, was stamped out as he announced the inquiry would be held entirely in private, overseen by the man responsible for reviewing WMD evidence on Iraq before the war, and not be delivered until next spring, right after the election. Proving yet again that if you’re going to do a whitewash, you might as well not fuck around…

Britain: For a war crimes trial over Iraq invasion
Julie Hyland
…The prosecution of high-ranking Nazis at the end of the Second World War established that the deliberate commissioning of an aggressive war constituted a criminal violation of international law. Indeed, this was the first charge leveled against the Nazi leadership. As the International Tribunal convened in Nuremberg explained: “To initiate a war of aggression … is not only an international crime, it is the supreme international crime, differing from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.” In the case of the Iraq war, this “accumulated evil” has found its malignant expression in mass killings, torture, “extraordinary rendition,” illegal detention and far-reaching attacks on basic democratic rights of the working class. What is called for is not yet another government-sponsored inquiry into the Iraq war, but the assembling of a war crimes tribunal to prosecute Bush, Blair and their co-conspirators for their murderous actions…

Maliah on Iran: The 1979 Revolution Was Lost — Start the Next One
Maliah
…Wake up people. If the left can’t come to terms with the reality that the world is more complex than the “us” vs “them” cold-war framework we perhaps memorized in our past indoctrination sessions… if we can’t wake up and face the reality that people’s struggles are local, complex, powerful, real, and dynamic within the larger polarized international context, then we are doomed to be a crusty tired dogmatic non-movement that is so rigid it is unable to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances of todays world. If we can’t wake up to the fact that people could be BOTH rageful at the theocracy, tired of living in oppressive bullshit, AND anti-US, anti-imperialist, deeply aware of the violent role of the US in the world, than we don’t know the people of the world at all. Have ANY of you met people from the Middle East?!…

THE DREAMS OF GAZA’S CHILDREN … A TRUE NARRATIVE
Ayman Quader, via Desertpeace
Since the establishment of the Palestinian refugee camps in 1949 as part of the aftermath of the Palestine-Israel conflict, the Palestinian refugees have been gravely suffering and are considered the longest suffering from this injustice. They are denied the basic access to life itself. It is worth mentioning that the refugee camps were established as a temporary-living solution for the refugees after they fled or were expelled from their original homes. The living condition of the Palestinian refugee is seriously miserable and lacks the basic daily necessities of life which are needed for a healthy development. The Palestinian refugee problem is totally complex regarding the living conditions as the people live under the line of poverty and are struggling for survival as the number of refugees have been dramatically increasing…

Tony Blair pushed Gordon Brown to hold Iraq war inquiry in private
Toby Helm and Gaby Hinsliff
Tony Blair urged Gordon Brown to hold the independent inquiry into the Iraq war in secret because he feared that he would be subjected to a “show trial” if it were opened to the public, the Observer can reveal. The revelation that the former prime minister – who led Britain to war in March 2003 – had intervened will fuel the anger of MPs, peers, military leaders and former civil servants, who were appalled by Brown’s decision last week to order the investigation to be conducted behind closed doors…

Speaking live on the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Channel 2 on Saturday, the speaker said that “a majority of people are of the opinion that the actual election results are different than what was officially announced.” “The opinion of this majority should be respected and a line should be drawn between them and rioters and miscreants,” he was quoted as saying by Khabaronline — a website affiliated with him…
