Netanyahu’s Kafkaesque vision of Palestinian statehood
Khaled Amayreh
There is no doubt that Benyamin Netanyahu’s odious screed at Bar Ilan University Sunday night was a slap in the face to all those who gave the so-called “peace process” between the Palestinian people and Israel the benefit of the doubt… Undoubtedly, Netanyahu’s speech amounted to a complete negation of all the “understandings and agreements” reached since the conclusion of the infamous Oslo Accords more than 16 years ago. Netanyahu did say that he would be willing to accept a castrated Palestinian state somewhere in “the Land of Israel”. However, he insisted that such an entity would have to be tightly controlled by Israel and bereft of any semblance of sovereignty or dignity…

Suspected US missile strike kills 5 in Pakistan
AP
A suspected US missile strike killed at least five people today in a tribal region where Pakistan’s top Taliban commander is based, intelligence officials said, breaking a lull in such attacks and posing a test for growing anti-Taliban sentiment in the country. The strike came as violence raged elsewhere in the volatile northwest regions bordering Afghanistan: a bombing at a market killed at least eight people, while officials said ongoing clashes between the Taliban and security forces killed at least 20 militants in a tribal region supposedly cleared of insurgents months ago…

Brief Iran update
Laura Rozen
Iranian opposition presidential candidate Mir Hussein Moussavi is planning a march of his supporters at 4 p.m. Monday in Tehran, Iranian sources said. He apparently went to see the supreme leader Sunday to seek a permit for it, but one hasn’t yet been obtained. If he is prevented from getting permission, he has said he plans to march to the mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomenei, an act that Iranians say the authorities of the Islamic Republic would be disinclined to prevent. Iranian sources said former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani is in Qom, seeking to persuade clerics not to certify the Iranian elections. Another presidential candidate, Mohsen Rezai, the former head of the Revolutionary Guards, issued a statement today saying he wants to have the ballots examined, Iranian sources said. Incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad held a press conference and victory rally Sunday, attended by tens of thousands..

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING
Malcom Lagauche
…Then, the propaganda machines went into full gear. According to many media pundits, Mousavi’s victory would reverse all the negative aspects of Iran. They began affixing names and colors to the revolution. These were identical to the Western depictions of elections in Czechoslovakia, Ukraine, and other former Soviet republics that the U.S. was courting. Even the bogus Iraqi “elections” of 2005 were designated the “purple” revolution. With Iran, the same script writers emerged. They tried to affix a name to the occurrences in Iraq, such as the “velvet” revolution. But, I think that name had already been used. A few days before the election, young Iranians took to the street to show their support of a new Iran. Few, however, realized that Mousavi did not include a revolution in his agenda…

The Aftermath of Iran 2009 Elections
Reza Fiyouzat, Revolutionary Flowerpot Society
…Stolen or not, these ‘elections’ produced (what I would characterize as) what the officialdom of Iran has decided to present to the world as their spokesperson and part director of the system. Besides allegations of vote rigging, there are more serious (more realistic?) allegations of a coup d’état, as well. Ebrahim Yazdi, a former politician in the first revolutionary interim government, and currently secretary-general of Nehzate Azadi, or Freedom Movement, has declared it a coup, and one can see clearly the reasons for such allegations…

Marcy Newman, body on the line
1. No to al Quds “Netanyahu’s remarks have sabotaged all initiatives, paralysed all efforts being made and challenges the Palestinian, Arab and American positions,” said Nabil Abu Rdainah, noting Mr Netanyahu’s demand that Jerusalem be the undivided capital of Israel and that Palestinian refugees not be allowed into Israel. 2. no to refugees right of return Netanyahu also said the Palestinians must recognize Israel as a Jewish state, and he declared that the solution of the Palestinian refugee problem must be “outside Israel.” 3. no to stopping the expansion of colonies Israel would not accept any situation in which it was forced to exist beside a “terrorist” state. Every withdrawal from settlement territories would contribute to such “terror”, said Netanyahu. He stressed that Palestinians must accept Israel as a Jewish state. 4. no to the right of Palestinians to defend themselves or resist foreign colonists occupying their land..

Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…According to the latest news from TV and the net, there are massive riots taking place in the capital tehran, riots by iranian youth…the anti-riots governmental security forces have arrested dozens and beaten up a few more, during the clashes…some reports claim about 100 dead. Buses and other government properties have been set on fire. All phone lines including cells phones have been cut off by the government, the net is down…extreme measures have been taken by the security apparatus to ensure that no further coordination of protest takes place amongst the rioters… Furthermore, according to some reporters in tehran, this popular anger is not so much due to support for the opposition as some like to believe, but as a general popular “fed up” reaction with both the government’s domestic and foreign policies…

Ahmadinejad: Clashes over election ’not important’
ap
Protesters set fires and smashed store windows Sunday in a second day of violence as groups challenging President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election tried to keep pressure on authorities. Anti-riot police lashed back and the regime blocked Internet sites used to rally the pro-reform campaign. Ahmadinejad dismissed the unrest — the worst in a decade in Tehran — as “not important.” He said Friday’s vote was “real and free” and insisted the results showing his landslide victory were fair and legitimate. Along Tehran’s Vali Asr street — where activists supporting rival candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi held a huge pre-election rally last week — tens of thousands marched in support of Ahmadinejad, waving Iranian flags and shouting his name…

The truth behind Depleted Uranium (DU) Contamination and its usage
Peter Eyre
So what now with Gaza? We have the UN War Crimes Investigation Team currently underway but what will they find? What will they choose not to find? What will be the final outcome? Could it again be a denial by the IDF that they did not use DU? Could it be a denial that the US did not export such weapons to Israel? And finally I believe that Israel itself is producing or modifying such weapons at its own nuclear facility. Is anyone brave enough to ask them to reveal their nuclear capability and exactly what is going on in such places as the Negev Desert Facility? The UN like its predecessor, The League of Nations, is extremely weak and vulnerable to the powers that control it i.e. The Security Council…

Obama’s Cairo Speech: A Rhetorical Shift in US Imperialism
Deepa Kumar
…Yet behind this liberal veneer of promoting “better understanding” and “mutual respect” is a report that in no way, shape or form attempts to “change course” on U.S. foreign policy objectives. Instead, it simply urges the use of more subtle and diplomatic means to achieve these aims. It states that the U.S. should engage Iran while insisting that it conform to non-proliferation standards; create a path for a two-state solution in Israel/Palestine; promote political reconciliation in Iraq and specify the U.S.’s long term goal; and renew an international commitment to stem the resurgence of extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In short, it promotes the goals of U.S. imperialism, but through means that mark a shift from the arrogant and unilateralist ways of the Bush regime…

The Other Apartheid State
By Ronnie Kasrils – Cape Town, South Africa
May I start by quoting a South African who emphatically stated as far back as 1961 that “The Jews took Israel from the Arabs after the Arabs had lived there for a thousand years. Israel like South Africa, is an apartheid state” (Rand Daily Mail, 23 November 1961). Those were not the words of Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Tutu or Ruth First, but were uttered by none other than the architect of apartheid itself, racist Prime Minister, Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd. He was irked by the criticism of apartheid policy and Harold Macmillan’s “Winds of Change” speech and the growing international outcry following the Sharpeville massacre, in contrast to the West’s unconditional support for Zionist Israel…
