AfPak war depopulates and devastates north-west Pakistan
By James Cogan
A little over a month ago, the Pakistani government acquiesced to the demands of the Obama administration to use brute force to eradicate radical Islamist influence in the north-west of the country, as part of the so-called AfPak war to secure American interests in Central Asia. The human cost and long-term political consequences are now becoming clear. The Pakistani military claimed over the weekend that it had largely shattered the armed opposition in the Swat Valley, Lower Dir and Buner districts of North West Frontier Province (NWFP)…

Shedding our own blood to please Israel
By Khalid Amayreh in Ramallah
The unnecessary death of six Palestinians, including two resistance fighters, by Palestinian hands in Qalqilya on Sunday, 31 May, will be an indelible and everlasting stigma of shame on the forehead of Israel’s Palestinian puppets. Palestinian (PA) officials, who think that dishonesty is the best policy, claimed that the killings were necessitated by commitments to keep law and order and protect the “national scheme.” However, this vacuous and mendacious pretext is itself worse than a crime. After all, what “national scheme” can possibly justify the hounding and killing of people who have spent the prime of their youth, resisting the criminal occupiers of their country and cruel tormentors of their people? Indeed, in any country that respects itself, people as such are accorded a high place of honor, not hounded and killed and called “outlaws.” In Qalqilya, all the blood shed was a Palestinian blood, including the blood of three PA soldiers who had been duped and brainwashed into thinking that Hamas was the enemy, not the Israeli occupation army which continues to murder and oppress the Palestinian people. Isn’t that a real tragedy?…

Index on War in Pakistan, May 2009
Sarah Meyer, Index Research
…” We have a clear and focused goal: to disrupt, dismantle and defeat al-Qaida in Pakistan and Afghanistan.” Barack Obama. Obama has now taken on the Bush administration’s mantle, continuing the war in Pakistan. America’s 3rd war in Pakistan was not mentioned in Obama’s recent “two war” address to the National Archives; nor is the 3rd war mentioned by US spokespeople. As if this war doesn’t exist…

UN: Israeli buffer zone eats up 30 percent of Gaza’s arable land
Erin Cunningham
Israel’s warning came from the sky, as it often does in the Gaza Strip. But this time warplanes dropped neither bombs nor missiles on the impoverished Palestinian territory, but thousands of tiny leaflets warning Gaza’s residents to keep away from the 30-mile-long border they share with Israel. Stay at least 300 meters (1,000 feet) from the border, the May 25 pamphlets advised Palestinians, or risk being shot by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Once a plush scene of rolling olive, citrus, and pomegranate groves, much of the border region is now just a barren landscape, marked only by the presence of IDF tanks, military watchtowers, and the occasional pop of gunfire…

Death of the Republic, Part CLXVIII
Chris Floyd
Glenn Greenwald, among others, is enraged at Barack Obama’s eager embrace of the latest disgorgement of third-rate juntaism to belch forth from the hallowed halls of the U.S. Congress: the “Detainee Photographic Records Protection Act of 2009,” sponsored by those ever-stalwart champions of liberty, Senators Lindsey Graham and Joe Lieberman. As Greenwald describes it: [The bill] literally has no purpose other than to allow the government to suppress any “photograph taken between September 11, 2001 and January 22, 2009 relating to the treatment of individuals engaged, captured, or detained after September 11, 2001, by the Armed Forces of the United States in operations outside of the United States…

Terrorists Killing Pakistanis With Indian/US Weapons
Dan Qayyum
Finally, the military admits what Pakistan’s pro-U.S. government has been hiding for months. The weapons that the terrorists – the fake Pakistani Taliban – are using to kill Pakistanis are coming from U.S. and India. Some members of the Karzai puppet regime have privately confirmed to Pakistani officials that they are incapable of stopping Indian terrorist activities on Afghan soil. To avoid embarrassment, Washington quickly ‘leaked’ a story that U.S. weapons given to Afghan security forces have reached insurgents. The timing of the leak conveniently coincided with the Pakistani army discovering the American double game. The Americans have been taking Pakistan for a ride for seven years…

The futility of pursuing a two-state Israeli-Palestinian solution
Only a single state is possible
Christopher King
The search for an agreed two-state solution between Israel and Palestine is a waste of time. Any such agreement will have no validity for a simple reason: it would be an imposed solution, that is, an unequal agreement between a subject population and a military occupier. It would therefore be fundamentally unsound by any standard of legality or justice and liable to challenge at any future time. There would be no difficulty in proving to a future international court that the Israeli occupation was a brutal one in which war crimes were committed with the objective of permanently confiscating land and water resources and by inhumane means, in violation of the Nuremberg principles, forcing the Palestinians to abandon and give away their land. Every Palestinian should be preparing his or her eyewitness diary and claim to the land against this eventuality as part of the Palestinian heritage…

Gaza: harvest challenges
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
Just after 7 am on May 30th, Palestinian farmers in Khoza’a, east of Khan Younis, returned to the land they’d been menaced off of 5 days earlier. “The same day the Israelis dropped papers saying they would shoot at us for being on our land they did shoot at us,” Ahmed, a 22 year old farmer explained. It was around 10:30, he said. “They were shooting so much that the dirt rose in clouds of dust.” When we arrive on May 30th, the bales of wheat are ready, all neatly and compactly hand-bundled, covering 30 dunums (1 dunum=1000 square metres) of land belonging to Radi Abu Rayder. He has another 140 dunums which he can no longer access because it lies too close to the border, within the Israel-imposed “buffer zone”…

U.S.: We will continue support of Israel in UN
By Yuval Azoulay, Nadav Shragai, Natasha Mozgovaya, and Haaretz Service
Contrary to recent reports, the U.S. will maintain its support of Israel in the United Nations, a U.S. official told Haaretz on Monday. Robert Wood, State Department deputy Spokesman, made the comments after earlier Monday the New York Times had reported that the Obama administration was considering a series of symbolic measures to force Israel to halt all construction in West Bank settlements. While refusing to comment on the New York Times report, Wood told Haaretz that both “the President and the Secretary have made clear that all the parties have responsibilities to fulfill to give Middle East peace efforts a chance to succeed. And U.S. and Israeli officials are in intensive discussions on how this can best be achieved.”..

Cheney: Death only option for some detainees if Gitmo closed
Jon Ward
Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday that the only alternative to holding some suspected terrorists indefinitely would be to execute them, arguing against the Obama administration’s plans to close the Guantanamo detainee prison. “If you’re going to be engaged in a world conflict such as we are, such as the global war on terrorism, if you don’t have a place where you can hold these people, your only other option is to kill them,” Mr. Cheney said…

Study: Israel practices apartheid and colonialism in Palestine
Ma’an News
The Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa (HSRC) released a study on Monday indicating that Israel is practicing both colonialism and apartheid in the occupied Palestinian territories. The interim report, which will form part of a discussion at an upcoming HSRC conference on the subject, titled Re-envisioning Israel/Palestine, on 13 and 14 June in Cape Town, serves as a document to be finalised later this year, according to a statement…

“We Saw No Evidence of Genocide”
Women in Darfur
AFSHIN RATTANSI
…Collette Valentine, a TV producer visiting from the United Kingdom, and Ali Gunn, a British media consultant, last week returned from Darfur where they attended the first “International Conference on the Challenge Facing Women in Darfur” in Al-Fasher in the north. Valentine says that articles about Darfur in the international press make her feel as if she visited a completely different region, a completely different country. It all adds weight to the thesis of Columbia University’s Professor Mahmood Mamdani that there is something very murky about Western aid agencies’ insistence that there has been genocide in Darfur, that at the heart of campaigns for Darfur is the culmination of a powerful, imperial desire to suppress citizenry from U.S. high school classrooms to right across the developing world…

“The True Story of the Bilderberg Group” and What They May Be Planning Now
A Review of Daniel Estulin’s book
Stephen Lendman
For over 14 years, Daniel Estulin has investigated and researched the Bilderberg Group’s far-reaching influence on business and finance, global politics, war and peace, and control of the world’s resources and its money. His book, “The True Story of the Bilderberg Group,” was published in 2005 and is now updated in a new 2009 edition. He states that in 1954, “the most powerful men in the world met for the first time” in Oosterbeek, Netherlands, “debated the future of the world,” and decided to meet annually in secret. They called themselves the Bilderberg Group with a membership representing a who’s who of world power elites, mostly from America, Canada, and Western Europe with familiar names like David Rockefeller, Henry Kissinger, Bill Clinton, Gordon Brown, Angela Merkel, Alan Greenspan, Ben Bernanke, Larry Summers, Tim Geithner, Lloyd Blankfein, George Soros, Donald Rumsfeld, Rupert Murdoch, other heads of state, influential senators, congressmen and parliamentarians, Pentagon and NATO brass, members of European royalty, selected media figures, and invited others – some quietly by some accounts like Barack Obama and many of his top officials…

The GM bankruptcy
Jerry White
General Motors—once the largest and most profitable corporation in the world—will file for bankruptcy protection in a New York City court this morning. The collapse of the 101-year-old Detroit automaker is the largest industrial failure and third largest bankruptcy in US history. The bankruptcy of what was long the iconic symbol of the power of American industry signifies the failure of not only one company, but of American capitalism as a whole. It is a milestone in the decline in the global position of US capitalism and the crisis of world capitalism. It poses in the starkest form the need for the working class to advance a socialist alternative to the profit system…

Iraqi Kurds hail oil exports, Baghdad keeps distance
Mohammed Abbas, Reuters
In a ceremony that would not have been out of place for the Oscars, Iraq’s Kurdish region on Monday celebrated the launch of oil exports from what it says are Iraq’s first newly developed oilfields in over 20 years. Exports from the Taq Taq and Tawke oilfields, developed by foreign companies, started at 100,000 barrels per day (bpd). Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, and Kurdish regional President Masoud Barzani, symbolically began the flow by turning a flower-festooned valve on a stage, to a backdrop of strobe lights, a satellite link to the fields and an operatic score…

Anti-siege gov’t committee: Many Gaza water wells will stop due to the blockade
Palestinian Information Center
The government committee for breaking the siege on Monday warned that a large number of water wells in the Gaza Strip stopped operating due to the Israeli siege that led to the absence of equipment and spare parts needed for the maintenance of pumps and generators. In a press statement received by the PIC, head of the committee Hamdi Sha’at said that more than 800 water wells out of 2,000 in different parts of Gaza were rendered unoperational or destroyed during the last Israeli war. Sha’at expressed concern about the negative impacts that might result from the stop of additional water wells on agricultural production and livestock in Gaza…

UN Team Probes Israel’s Gaza War
IslamOnline.net
United Nations human rights investigators arrived in Gaza on Monday, June 1, to investigate Israel’s three-week war on the impoverished, fenced-off territory and determine whether war crimes were committed against the civilian population. “We have come here to see, to learn, to talk to people in all walks of life; ordinary people, governmental people, administrative people,” South African jurist Richard Goldstone, who leads the team, told reporters. The four investigators plan to spend a week in the Gaza Strip…

PA arrests Palestinian journalist Awadh Rajoub
Khaled Amayreh
The Palestinian Authority (PA) security apparatus on Monday arrested Palestinian journalist Awadh Rajoub. Rajoub, a correspondent of al-Jazeera.net in occupied Palestine, was summoned by telephone to the offices of the PA “military intelligence” in Hebron where he was arrested. PA officials refused to say why Rajoub was arrested. However it is widely believed that the arrest was in connection with a report he wrote on the assassination by Israeli troops last week of Abdul Majid Dudeen, a prominent resistance fighter affiliated with Hamas military wing, the Izzedin al Qassam Brigades…
