“Sadistic . . . violent . . . inhuman.”
Mike Malloy
…At today’s White House press briefing, press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that the president was concerned that the photos’ release would pose a national security threat. In other words, these unreleased photos and videos show acts of degeneracy so vile there is no way they can be explained or rationalized. They contain images of children – some of them the children of detainees – being raped and sodomized as a means of forcing confessions from the adult detainees that would provide the links between Saddam Hussein and al-Quaeda that Dick Cheney and George W. Bush insisted were the basis of their orders to invade and occupy Iraq. Children of detainees being raped and sodomized as a means of obtaining confessions. In testimony before Congress five years ago no less a war criminal than the murderous former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the unrevealed photos and videos contain acts “that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhuman.”…

Silent as the Grave: A Timely Demise Draws the Curtain on a Deeply Rooted Evil
Chris Floyd
As Scott Horton at Harper’s reports — drawing on the reporting of Andy Worthington — the Terror War captive who would have provided the most damning evidence of the direct connection between the Bush administration’s torture program and its concoction of false evidence to “justify” its Hitlerian act of aggression in Iraq has suddenly, somehow, come over all dead-like. Ali Mohamed al-Fakheri — more usually known as Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi — was captured in Afghanistan in late 2001 and subjected to a series of horrific tortures designed to make him “confess” to non-existent ties between Iraq and al Qaeda. These torture-induced fantasies were then used over and over by top Bush officials — including the sainted Colin Powell in his infamous “Gleiwitz Incident” appearance at the UN in February 2003, which “sealed the deal” on the war for the bipartisan political and media elites. After this, al-Fakheri was deep-sixed into the blackest quadrants of the American gulag, then secretly “renditioned” to the tender mercies of America’s new best friend, Libyan dictator Moamar Gadafy…

The real vs fake Taliban
By Nauman Qaiser
…This is where the whole problem lies; we haven’t, as yet, been able to differentiate between what I call the “real” Taliban who solely focus on fighting the occupation forces in Afghanistan, and the “fake” Taliban, who are working on a hidden agenda of the United States and its ally, India, to disintegrate Pakistan. I call them fake, because it was during Musharraf’s nine-year rule, whilst we considered ourselves an American ally, that the secret agencies of United States, India, Britain and Afghanistan established their hold throughout the length and breadth of Pakistan by setting up an extensive espionage network of their own, which recruited and subsequently released thousands of trained operatives garbed in the cloths of “Taliban” into the Pakistani territory…

Obama bombs over Pakistan
Marcy Newman, body on the line
A naive, and likely American, reader of my blog seems to think that the United States did not instigate and is not participating in the war on Pakistan because this reader spoke to a someone in the military who denied it. Ah, okay, that settles it. Not! Here is a reuters report about more American bombs targeting Pakistan yet again…

Against Prosecution (III): Obama and the Triumph of the American Myth
Arthur Silber
…Given the fundamentalist fervor with which the U.S. ruling class maintains and burnishes the national mythology, an exercise in which the majority of “ordinary” Americans join with equal enthusiasm (for such dedication to onanistic joys will forever find many followers), Barack Obama was inevitable. It was dangerous enough when truth was the enemy; truth was to be destroyed, but there remained a barely discernible acknowledgment that the truth still existed. With the ascension of Obama the Marketer, Obama the Fulfiller of Dreams, Obama the Commander of Illusion, the lie occupies the most prominent national space. Once installed, the lie grows daily and hourly…

Gaza: Families Down to a Meal a Day
By Erin Cunningham
Um Abdullah cannot remember the last time she was able to feed meat to her eight children. She does know that for the past week the single meal she cooked for them each day consisted only of lentils. And that on one day, she had received aid coupons from the United Nations, which she subsequently sold to buy tomatoes and eggplant at the local market. Um Abdullah is a 42-year-old dressmaker and hails from Jabaliya, a cramped refugee camp on the outskirts of Gaza City. Stories like hers are commonplace across the Gaza Strip, where years of sanctions, siege and now war have battered the territory’s economy and put many essentials out of reach for the majority of the population. “We live day to day, nothing more,” says Um Abdullah, who made less than three dollars in profit over the last three days. “If we can eat once a day, that is good enough for us.”…

Feras As’ad Al Mazlom, an infant aged 2, a sole child for newly married couples As’ad and Amal. NATO in Georgia
Fun and games
Eric Walberg
As Russian troops marched to celebrate the victory over Nazi Germany 8 May, NATO troops — 1,300 of them from 10 member countries and six “partners” — were beginning their month-long Cooperative Longbow/Lancer war “games” on Russia’s southern border. In deference to Moscow, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Serbia decided not to participate in the NATO exercises, preferring to send their diplomats to Red Square in homage to the untold Russian sacrifice in pursuit of world peace. According to Russian MP Sergei Abeltsev, the NATO decision to hold the drills in Georgia during the WWII Victory Day celebrations was a “total revision of the history of the Great Patriotic War”…

Dr. Finkelstein and the Rejection of the Vienna University
Kawther Salam
…when Universities turn away from these their objective goals and principles and instead become the castles of suppression of the freedom of speech and expression, they only spread ideology, and ideologies are without exception, collections of ideas which only serve to further the goals and justify the activities of psychopaths. This is the point when staying at home, or on a mountain with the goats, but without education, becomes a much better alternative, to be preferred over education at University … This all what I can say after Prof. Manuel Arispe, a professor from Peru, sent me e-transferthe correspondence between him and the director of University of Vienna, explaining the purpose of inviting the intellectual Dr. Norman Finkelstein to give a speech on coming May 27 at the campus in the old AKH in Vienna. The invitation of Dr. Finkelstein came after an agreement to use a locality on the Uni Campus had already been signed with the organizers of the event, and after the University received 481 Euro in payment for the use of the premises (see documents below). But the University refused their permission to allow the Finkelstein lecture after somebody from a zionist organization sent a protest letter (quoted in part), consisting more of bullying and whining than the mention of facts which would warrant refusing the appearance of Dr. Finkelstein…

Who is the siege really on?
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
… Today, a US resident wrote to me of the impossibility of sending money from the States to Palestine: “I have been roaming for over a week for a western union place that accepts to send money…unfortunately there is no way to do so.I thought first that they were scared to send themselves…and i started to go from one place to the other..i tried also with banks- that send WU- and everybody says no way…i then decided to go to dahiye thought that maybe here they are scared…but then even in dahiyeh…he showed me on his computer that they deleted the Palestinian Authority as an option..so they can’t even perform it..i told him u said u could send through US he said yes but they blocked it on us here… Today i tried with money gram..and same thing.” Thanks to such stoic efforts of preventing money from entering Gaza, where over 80% of Palestinians are dependent on aid, and where aid is actively being banned entry except for but a trickle, the impoverished people I’ve been meeting all over Gaza must lose this last attempt at aid, when an economy has been intentionally destroyed and all efforts at self-subsistence are routinely, daily sabotaged…

Pope Urges Palestine State, Gaza Siege End
IslamOnline.net
Pope Benedict XVI called on Wednesday, May 13, for an independent state for the Palestinian people, hoping the long-running siege slapped on the impoverished Gaza Strip would come to an end soon. “The Holy See supports the right of your people to a sovereign Palestinian homeland in the land of your forefathers, secure and at peace with its neighbors, within internationally recognized borders,” he told a joint press conference with President Mahmoud Abbas. “In particular I call on the international community to bring its influence to bear in favor of a solution.” The pontiff offered his condolences to the victims of Israel’s recent war on Gaza, which killed more than 1,400 Palestinians, mostly women and children… Pope Benedict also called for lifting the long-running siege Israel has been clamping on the Gaza coastal enclave, home to some 1.6 million…

Distant Voices, Desperate Lives
John Pilger
In the early 1960s, it was the Irish of Derry who would phone late at night, speaking in a single breath, spilling out stories of discrimination and injustice. Who listened to their truth until the violence began? Bengalis from what was then East Pakistan did much the same. Their urgent whispers described terrible state crimes that the news ignored, and they implored us reporters to “let the world know”. Palestinians speaking above the din of crowded rooms in Bethlehem and Beirut asked no more. For me, the most tenacious distant voices have been the Tamils of Sri Lanka, to whom we ought to have listened a very long time ago. It is only now, as they take to the streets of western cities, and the persecution of their compatriots reaches a crescendo, that we listen, though not intently enough to understand and act…

Obama’s latest effort to conceal evidence of Bush era crimes
Glenn Greenwald
It’s difficult to react much to Obama’s complete reversal today of his own prior decision to release photographs depicting extreme detainee abuse by the United States. He’s left no doubt that this is what he does: ever since he was inaugurated, Obama has taken one extreme step after the next to keep concealed both the details and the evidence of Bush’s crimes, including rendition, torture and warrantless eavesdropping. …

Covering up Israel’s Gaza crimes with UN help
Hasan Abu Nimah, The Electronic Intifada
In my last article, I considered how UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon might handle the inquiry into Israeli attacks on UN facilities in the occupied Gaza Strip last winter. I hoped for the best but feared the worst given press reports that Ban had been told by the United States not to publish the report in full lest that harm the “peace process.” Unfortunately, the worst fears were fully justified as Ban published and sent to the Security Council only a 27-page summary of the 184-page document submitted to him by a board of inquiry led by a former head of Amnesty International. Moreover, Ban rejected a key recommendation that there be a full independent investigation into numerous killings and injuries caused to UN personnel and Palestinian civilians during the Israeli assault…

List of 140 Afghan dead includes 93 children
By Hamid Shalizi
Ninety-three children and 25 adult women are among a list of 140 names of Afghans who villagers say were killed in a battle and U.S. air strikes last week, causing a crisis between Washington and its Afghan allies. The list, obtained by Reuters, bears the endorsement of seven senior provincial and central government officials, including an Afghan two-star general who headed a task force dispatched by the government to investigate the incident. Titled “list of the martyrs of the bombardment of Bala Boluk district of Farah Province”, it includes the name, age and father’s name of each alleged victim. The youngest was listed as 8-day-old baby Sayed Musa, son of Sayed Adam. Fifty-three victims were girls under the age of 18, and 40 were boys. Only 22 were men 18 or older…

ISRAELI SETTLERS GET A TASTE OF THEIR OWN MEDICINE
Desertpeace
For sixty one years the Palestinian population living in Israel have lived as Second Class Citizens. Closures, checkpoints, harrasment by local authorities have become a part of everyday life for these people. In more recent years we saw the erection of the wall of apartheid built mainly on Palestinian lands, shrinking their territory even more than it already has been. We have also witnessed the establishment of illegal settlements, built on lands stolen from the Palestinians. We have seen Palestinian owned olive groves destroyed to make room for these settlements…

Israeli “Peace” discussion groups, common pitfalls and how to recognise them.
Mary Rizzo, Palestine Think Tank
…Discussion groups are the salt of activism and networking. Even newspapers and magazines such as Newsweek and the NYT have realised that comments blocks of blogs are probably just as relevant to the discussion as the article itself. So, we all have to know the best ways to get the most out of these situations and one of the key things to do is to avoid the pitfalls of letting Gatekeepers and Trolls dominate discourse and deviate the issues…

Thousands in Manger Square chant “Viva al Baba, Viva Gaza” as Pope continues Bethlehem visit
Ma’an News
Ending the siege on Gaza and establishing a Homeland for Palestinians were two of the requests Pope Benedict XVI made during his first two speeches in Bethlehem on Wednesday. Expectations for the pope have been mixed as the Holy Father’s trip to the region came at a delicate time; just less than four months after the last shell was dropped on Gaza, three days before scheduled unity talks and only hours after a foiled attempt by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to form a new caretaker government…

Taliban bombs US base near Khost
Aljazera.net
At least four people have been killed and many others injured when a suicide bomber detonated a car filled with explosives outside a US base near the Afghan city of Khost. A Taliban spokesman told Al Jazeera on Wednesday that the group had attacked Camp Salerno, 4km outside Khost. Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from the Afghan capital, Kabul, said: “A US spokesman has confirmed to Al Jazeera that four Afghan workers have been killed and 16 others injured…

Fatah demands Abbas pick new PM for government; Fayyad postpones issue
Ma’an News
Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who was mandated by President Mahmoud Abbas to form a replacement caretaker government for the West Bank has decided to postpone the swearing in of his cabinet. Fayyad cited reasons for the delay on Wednesday as the current visit of the Pope to Bethlehem and Abbas’ preoccupation with his planned trip to Syria Thursday. Sources said plans for a replacement government would only be postponed until Sunday. The sources close to Fayyad made no mention of a demand from Abbas’ own party, Fatah, to replace the prime minister…

In an about-face, White House opposes release of alleged prisoner abuse photos
Michael Muskal
The Obama administration changed direction today, announcing that it would oppose the release of photographs showing the alleged abuse of prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan. The administration this month had agreed to release dozens of the photographs but reversed course after top military officials said they were concerned that the photos could put U.S. troops in jeopardy, particularly in Afghanistan. The president said publication of the photos would serve no purpose and could endanger U.S. troops…
