Quietus in Pakistan.
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
Quietus is an interesting noun. It means “ a finishing stroke; anything that effectually ends or settles…” It etymologically originates from the verb “to quit” and is also related to the word “quiet”. A rather appropriate word to describe what is happening in and to Pakistan. I have made reference to Pakistan in several of my previous posts – the last one being “Framing Pakistan”. Sorry to tell you but tonight, I do not portend good omens for Pakistan. It’s alright with me, you may consider me the Mesopotamian version of Cassandra. Not only has Pakistan been framed, it has also fallen into a deadly trap and it will take lots of good will, political shrewdness and strategic acumen to get out of this hole…and I do not see it happening. And I truly hope to be proven wrong this time. After many years of living and observing the Iraqi experiment, I can tell you with about 99% accuracy how the plan for Pakistan will be unfolding in the coming months. Because, believe it or not, I see parallels taking place…

Al Qaeda’s world base in Pakistan, says Petraeus
Daily Times Monitor
Pakistan has become the nerve centre of Al Qaeda’s global operations, Gen David Petraeus has said. The head of the US Army’s Central Command, who oversees the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, has told an interviewer that Al Qaeda leaders have re-established its organisational structure and stronger ties to Al Qaeda offshoots in Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, North Africa and parts of Europe. “It is the headquarters of the Al Qaeda senior leadership,” said the general…

Cheney Confirms Iran-Contra Cover-Up
Jonathan Schwarz
In a new article by Stephen “W.W. Beauchamp” Hayes, former Vice President Cheney gripes extensively about the Obama administration. It’s exactly what you’d expect. But what you might not expect is that Cheney (seemingly inadvertently) confirms that there was a massive cover-up of the Iran-Contra scandal by the Reagan administration: “I went through the Iran-contra hearings and watched the way administration officials ran for cover and left the little guys out to dry. And I was bound and determined that wasn’t going to happen this time.” Considering that two national security advisers (Robert McFarlane and John Poindexter) and the Secretary of Defense (Caspar Weinberger) were some of the “little guys” who were prosecuted for Iran-Contra, it’s obvious who Cheney is talking about as hanging them out to dry: President Reagan and Vice President Bush..

The sinking of the Dignity
Greta Berlin, Free Gaza Movement
For many of us who loved this yacht, traveled on her, fussed over her, felt that she was something special, we have been devastated by her loss. The Dignity was not just a yacht. She was a hope that internationals and Palestinians could come to Gaza. She provided an illusion that, someday, if others followed, the port of Gaza would be open to commerce just like any other port on the Mediterranean. Our donors delighted in looking at her photos, many of you sailed forth waving from the back of her, then sailed into Gaza waving from the front. Even when she was deliberately rammed on December 30, she struggled valiantly into the port in Lebanon, guided by Denis and Derek, two of the best seamen any of us will ever have the pleasure to know.

US seeks Iran presence at G8 on Afghanistan
PressTV
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed her support for Iran’s participation at a G8 foreign ministerial meeting on Afghanistan. Clinton had voiced “her positive opinion on the subject of the eventual participation of Iran” at the G8 talks, Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini, said after a Saturday meeting with Clinton in Washington. Foreign ministers of the Group of Eight industrialized nations (G8) will hold a meeting in the Italian city of Trieste in June which will focus on restoring stability in Afghanistan and Pakistan. “Our objective is to have the Iranian and American foreign ministers seated at the same table,” he added…

Baathists must be included in national reconciliation – official
Aswat al-Iraq
A Kurdish official on Saturday said that Iraq’s problems can never be solved without a comprehensive national reconciliation, which, he said, must expand to include Baathists. “All parties have to accept the Baathists’ return to politics as the country’s problems can never be solved without an overall national reconciliation,” the culture minister in the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region told Aswat al-Iraq news agency…
