The FBI’s Department of Precrime
Tom Burghardt
From COINTELPRO to the illegal targeting of antiwar activists and Muslim-Americans, the FBI is America’s premier political police agency. And now, from the folks who brought us Wi-Fi hacking, viral computer spyware and al-Qaeda triple agent Ali Mohamed comes the Bureau’s Department of Precrime! A chilling new report by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) reveals the breadth and scope of the FBI’s Investigative Data Warehouse (IDW), the Bureau’s massive data-mining project. With more than a billion records “many of which contain information on American citizens,” EFF is calling on Congress to demand FBI accountability and strict oversight of this Orwellian project…

The Israeli municipality handed out a new wave of demolishing orders on Monday to Palestinian families in Jerusalem old city and around it. Hatim Abdul-Qader, Jerusalem Affairs Advisor to the Palestinian Prime Minister, told reporters that the orders include homes inside Jerusalem’s old city and in the predominated Palestinian neighborhoods of Wadi Al Joz and Damascus Gate. Obama administration indicates military commission trials to resume
Tom Eley
Recent statements by top Obama administration officials and reports in the New York Times and Washington Post indicate that President Barack Obama plans to resume the system of military commission trials for some Guantánamo prisoners. The articles, which are based on anonymous White House sources, and statements by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Attorney General Eric Holder appear designed to prepare public opinion for a revival of the trials, which were temporarily suspended in an order issued by Obama on the day of his inauguration. The suspension is due to end May 20…

More Meddling Plans For Pakistan
Moon of Alabama
…The permanent massive interference by the U.S. in Pakistan reminds me of Cambodia during the Vietnam war. The outcome in Pakistan may be just as worse as the one we saw there. Let’s hope that Nawaz and Kyani can grow some backbone and resist to both of the alternative U.S. plots. These are not good for their country and may be deadly for both of them too…

Where’s the Justice at the Justice Department?
The AIPAC Spy Case
By JAMES G. ABOUREZK
The big news last week was the defection of Republican Senator Arlen Specter to the Democrats; the bankruptcy filing of the Chrysler Corporation, and finally, the retirement of Justice David Souter from the U.S. Supreme Court. A much smaller news item competing with these sensational stories was that the U.S. Justice Department announced that it is dropping the espionage charges against two former AIPAC agents. The story was so small that it barely was a blip on the media’s radar, bringing absolutely no comment on the network news and talk shows…

Afghan president Hamid Karzai chooses warlord as running mate
Associated Press
President Hamid Karzai chose a powerful warlord accused of rights abuses as one of his vice presidential running mates on Monday, hours before leaving for meetings in Washington with President Barack Obama and Pakistan’s president. The selection of Mohammad Qasim Fahim, a top commander in the militant group Jamiat-e-Islami during Afghanistan’s 1990s civil war, drew immediate criticism from human rights groups. A 2005 Human Rights Watch report, “Blood-Stained Hands,” found “credible and consistent evidence of widespread and systematic human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law” were committed by Jamiat commanders, including Fahim…

The Silent Population
Joharah Baker
If it weren’t for two little boys hitching a ride with us, this article would never have been written. Thanks to the mysterious way the universe operates, I will admit I am glad for the bizarre events of yesterday so that I could be reminded of a sector of Palestinian society all too often disregarded. I am talking about the Bedouins, those silent nomads of whom I was reminded because of two tiny first graders who needed a ride home…

PCHR Strongly Condemns Israeli Plans to Confiscate 12,000 Donums of Palestinian Land in Order to Link the Illegal “Ma’ale Adumim” and “Qedar” Settlements
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) strongly condemns the Israeli Ministry of the Interior’s decision to expand the illegal West Bank settlement of “Ma’ale Adumim” and to confiscate 12,000 donums (12 million square meters) of Palestinian land. In the context of policies aimed to establishing a Jewish majority in occupied East Jerusalem – thereby consolidating its illegal annexation – the Israeli Minister of Interior, Elli Yishai, decided to adopt the recommendations of a special committee established by his ministry to link “Qedar” settlement with the larger “Ma’ale Adumim” settlement, east of Jerusalem. Under the Israeli Ministry of Interior’s plan, at least 12,000 donums of Palestinian land will be annexed to “Ma’ale Adumim”, linking it with the smaller “Qedar” settlement, which is located nearly 3 kilometers to the east…

US complicit in use of Iraqi air space by Iran?
Clarity Staff Reporter
In the underbelly of inter-nation diplomacy sometimes news reports that seem random are, in fact, really signs of behind the scenes co-operation. Iran has problems with rebels on its borders, and has been running long time operations against separatist Kurds. Iran has even asked for help from the UN in the past, but given its pariah standing over its nuclear program, were denied any assistance. So a report today that saw Iran helicopters (and jets in unsubstantiated eye witness accounts) flying sorties across US-controlled Iraqi air space against the Kurds rings of such a back-door complicit deal between the US and Iran. If so, this will be an early dance to build trust between the two parties out of the immediate public eye, and with plausible deniability if things go wrong. So for the greater ‘good’ of US-Iran relations, the Kurds were attacked in an unprecedented air strike through Iraq airspace…

Spain Goes With Gaza War Crimes Probe
IslamOnline.net
A Spanish judge decided Monday, May 4, to press ahead with a probe into Israeli crimes against humanity by a senior officials in the Gaza Strip in 2002. “No criminal investigation which could lead to the possibility of a conflict of jurisdictions has up until now arisen,” National Court judge Fernando Andreu wrote in his ruling cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP). Andreu named in January then Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer and six military officials as suspects of committing crimes against humanity in Gaza in 2002…

Deep Disquiet Over Iraq Press Law
By Basim al-Shara, Hadeel Kamil and Dhirgham Muhammad Ali in Baghdad (ICR No. 288)
A proposed law designed to protect the press may end up obstructing it because of a failure to guarantee access to information, journalists say. The bill’s highlights include tough penalties for those who attack journalists, and compensation for their victims. Its supporters say it will boost press freedom in what remains the world’s most dangerous country for journalists. Journalists admit the planned legislation addresses some of the threats they encounter in their work. But, they say, it ignores many of the obstacles […] According to Hashim Hassan, a media studies professor at Baghdad University, the government will use the new law “to prevent any journalist from writing on touchy issues. “It would be better for Iraqi journalists to have no media law at all than to have one that would restrict press freedom and could prove very difficult to revise.”..

Who Could Have Believed It? +25,000 U.S. Combat Troops Will Remain In Baghdad After Deadline For U.S. Combat Troops To Leave Baghdad: “What You’re Seeing Is Not A Change In The Numbers, It’s A Doctrine Change”. “We Don’t Mean You Won’t Have Soldiers Trained In Combat Skills In The City,” General Perkins Said.
The United States and Iraq will begin negotiating possible exceptions to the June 30 deadline for withdrawing American combat troops from Iraqi cities, focusing on the troubled northern city of Mosul, according to military officials. Some parts of Baghdad also will still have combat troops. In Baghdad, however, there are no plans to close the Camp Victory base complex, consisting of five bases housing more than 20,000 soldiers, many of them combat troops. Although Victory is only a 15 minute drive from the center of Baghdad and sprawls over both sides of the city’s boundary, Iraqi officials say they have agreed to consider it outside the city.

Combat Operations in Fallujah
Dahr Jamail, t r u t h o u t | Report
… The meat grinder that is the US occupation of Iraq is picking up speed once again. Attacks against both Iraqi civilians and US soldiers are increasing dramatically. At the time of this writing, five soldiers have been killed in the last four days, over a dozen innocent Iraqis have been slaughtered, and over a dozen have been wounded. Iraqi government attacks on the Sahwa continue, al-Qaeda is now operating largely at will, and attacks on US forces are now happening all over Iraq – including in Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Iraq. Combat operations in Fallujah. A recent UN report documenting ongoing US torturing of Iraqis in military detention facilities in Iraq. Roadside bomb attacks against US forces spanning the entire geography of the country. Iraqis being slaughtered in numbers not seen since George W. Bush still had eight months left in his second term. What has changed in Iraq?…

Random Notes on a Runaway World
Chris Floyd
…Surely no one could have predicted that the US would dump its dubious “allies” in the Iraq War once they had served their purpose: i.e., bringing the death count down during the “surge,” so Washington’s bipartisan political class could get the war off the front pages, and declare it a “success beyond our wildest dreams” and an “extraordinary achievement.” No one, that is, except anyone who had even casually observed the imperial MO in action over the past several decades. Yes, now that the war is practically “over” (except for the rising violence, the continuing chaos, and the ever-deepening entrenchment of tens of thousands of American troops in permanent bases, etc.), the Americans and their Iraqi clients are discarding the “Sons of Iraq,” the Sunni militants and former insurgents who were paid to switch sides and quit killing Americans for awhile, on the promise of their future inclusion in a “sovereign” Iraqi government. But now, they are being cast aside, cut off from funding, and arrested by the new “strongman” regime of Nouri al-Maliki, whose armed sectarian faction (once dubbed terrorists by Washington) have been put in charge of the country. The result: more violence on every side, as the government cracks down on the ousted “Sons,” the “Sons” strike back, and sectarian blowback and revenge attacks escalate on every side — “endangering” plans for the US “withdrawal”. nWhy, it’s almost as if someone has given the client government in Baghdad a green light to take actions that are guarant! eed to i ncrease the level of violence and instability — therefore “requiring” a longer, stronger US presence in the conquered land! Who would benefit from such an action? War profiteers, maybe? Fanatical militarists? Neocons and “liberal interventionists” committed to “projecting” American power (for the good of the world, of course)? …

Buying Brand Obama
Chris Hedges
…The junk politics practiced by Obama is a consumer fraud. It is about performance. It is about lies. It is about keeping us in a perpetual state of childishness. But the longer we live in illusion, the worse reality will be when it finally shatters our fantasies. Those who do not understand what is happening around them and who are overwhelmed by a brutal reality they did not expect or foresee search desperately for saviors. They beg demagogues to come to their rescue. This is the ultimate danger of the Obama Brand. It effectively masks the wanton internal destruction and theft being carried out by our corporate state…

Petition seeks expulsion of Palestinian activist from Israeli university
Press release, PACBI

The impressive growth of the Palestinian civil society campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel, particularly after its criminal war of aggression on the occupied Gaza Strip, is testimony to the morality and consistency of ordinary citizens and civil society organizations around the world concerned about restoring Palestinian rights and achieving justice for Palestinians. The most recent achievement of the Israel boycott movement was the adoption of BDS — nearly by consensus — by the Scottish Trade Union Congress, following the example set by the Congress of South African Trade Unions and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. In despair over their evident inability to stop or even hold back the growing tide of BDS across the globe, Israel apologists have resorted to an old tactic at which they seem to excel: witch hunts and smear campaigns…

Time to say ‘No” to Israeli fascism
By Khalid Amayreh in Occupied East Jerusalem
Israel and her supporters are making rabid efforts to enhance the ugly image of the new Israeli government. That government, as we all know, is composed of manifestly fascist parties based on Jewish supremacy and racist disregard for the Palestinian people which has been on the receiving end of Zionist savagery and brutality for over sixty one years. This month, Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu and his thuggish Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman are going to try to convince the leaders of western countries that Palestinians don’t really need freedom and liberty and human rights and that, like all animals, all they need is bread and some other food supplements…

Inside the Numbers
Obama’s War Budget
By JEFF LEYS
President Obama’s 2009 supplemental spending request to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is currently before Congress. The House Appropriations Committee will “mark up” (finalize its version) of a war funding bill at a committee hearing on May 7th. The full House will likely vote on the bill the following week. The objective is to have the bill finalized and to Obama for signature by Memorial Day. President Obama is seeking an additional $75.8 billion in war funds for this fiscal year. It is possible that Congress will add to this amount before final passage. If Congress enacts Obama’s request, total war spending will come to $144.6 billion for Fiscal Year 2009 (which ends on September 30, with Fiscal Year 2010 beginning on October 1). This compares to the $186 billion war spending in 2008. Obama’s proposed war budget for 2010 is $130 billion…

Who benefits from Iraq’s treasure of business opportunities?
Fatih Abdulsalam, Azzaman
There is no country in the world with as many business and investment opportunities as Iraq. Iraq is perhaps the only country in the world with an endless list of offers for firms and individuals to start business and make money. Iraq itself has turned into an opportunity-for-all since the 2003 U.S. invasion. It has become a good opportunity for all those who lack the potential, the efficiency and the skills to do anything useful in life. So, one should not be surprised to see an illiterate and unemployed person to suddenly become a big businessman and contractor…

AN URGENT APPEAL TO HELP BREAK THE SIEGE OF GAZA
Free Gaza Movement
We desperately need your help. It’s with heavy hearts that we have to inform you that the Free Gaza ship, the DIGNITY, has been lost outside Larnaca port in Cyprus. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident. On 30 December 2008 the DIGNITY was rammed by the Israeli navy while on a mission of mercy to deliver critically needed medical supplies and doctors to the war-ravaged Gaza Strip. Thanks to the heroic efforts of its captain and crew, the DIGNITY was able to find safe harbor in Lebanon, later making its way to Cyprus for repairs. Early this morning we received a call from the Harbor Master in Larnaca, informing us that the ship was taking on water. While attempting to tow her to safety, the ship went down. An inquiry has begun into the circumstances surrounding her demise, possibly due to storm damage suffered during the night.

Islamic Army in Iraq: An open letter to U.S. President Barack Obama – A golden opportunity to accomplish the mission
Islamic Army in Iraq
A group of Americans created a myth named “terror” and have changed and applied its meaning whenever they so desire. They planned their corrupt war on Iraq based on lies and fallacies in order to assert control over the sources of energy and maintain the security of Israel according to the Greater Middle East plan. This has put America in a serious and difficult situation, and the results are: On Iraq: Turned a country known for its’ peaceful coexistence between citizens, scientific progress, absence of illiteracy, free health care and free education; to a divided, scary, and backward country. The occupation and sectarian militias killed 4% of the Iraqi people, made 8% of Iraqi women widows, orphaned 16% of Iraqi children, abandoned 15% and detained more than 2%. 40% of the professors left the country, 84% of the universities were looted and the illiteracy rate has reached 30%. About 76% of Iraqis do not have healthy water, 54% of households are living in poverty and unemployment has exceeded 50%. With the current level of government corruption, Iraq is now at the top of the list of most corrupt government administrations in the whole world. The environment was destroyed and Iraq has became a country which depends on imports as it does not produce anything. Drugs are widespread across the streets after Bush’s democracy, while prior to the invasion Iraq was a drug free country. The security situation ! has cont inually deteriorated, kidnappings and extortion has spread. All of this was aimed at destroying the social relations between Iraq’s ethnic groups and changing its demographics and population ratios…

Gaza: Environment Emerges as a Major Casualty
Erin Cunningham*
Countless fruit groves across the Gaza Strip are now gone, entire farms bulldozed. The remains of thousands of destroyed homes emit toxic asbestos, while dilapidated infrastructure dumps raw sewage into the Mediterranean Sea. An already deepening environmental crisis in the besieged Gaza Strip has been further compounded by the recent war. Throughout the three-week Operation Cast Lead, Israel targeted almost every aspect of the coastal territory’s infrastructure. Homes, businesses, factories, power grids, sewage systems and water treatment plants were reduced to piles of rubble across the Gaza Strip…

Unreported or Underreported Real Pandemics, Not Fake Ones Like Avian and Swine Flu

But it proved hugely profitable for drug makers like Roche and Gilead Sciences, the company Donald Rumsfeld led as chairman from 1997 – 2001 and remains a major shareholder. Although he won’t discuss his “private finances,” he’s likely benefitting handsomely from the current panic…

West Bank bedouins to ‘stay put’
By Zeina Awad
The bedouins of Umm Al Khayr, a small town south-east of Hebron, may be among the most vulnerable Palestinian refugee communities in the West Bank, but they are fighting to keep the land they have lived on for generations. They have been battling the Israeli army in the courts to prove that the land they live on is theirs, and to block a so-called security patrol road from being built. On April 26, they faced off against the Israeli army to stop the road from reaching deep into their residential areas. With the help of international and Israeli anti-occupation activists, the bedouins were able to prevent the bulldozers from cutting through their homes. They scored a minor victory, but they know this could only be temporary and they recognise that their battle has just begun…

Wait a second here, let me get my mask out before addressing you…I am a hypochondriac, who is allergic to pigs. I love animals but was never driven by the urge to pet a pig. Something about pigs repulses me. Maybe they are cute and maybe they can fly too…I don’t care. Pigs are pigs. I have seen them in action. They are an ugly bunch. They groan all the time, and stink to high heavens. They live in rubbish, eat rubbish and are rubbish. We’ve got thousands of them in Iraq. White and pink ones and occasionally darker ones…domesticated, wild, hogs on the loose. So much for your swine…

The New York Times story today on the dropping of the government case against the AIPAC lobbyists Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman comes in separate parts, not entirely signaled by paragraph breaks or outward format. The report by Neil A. Lewis and David Johnston sets out to answer three questions. What was this investigation about? Who is pleased and who displeased by the reversal? And why was the case dropped at just this moment? The last question is the easiest to answer. The Justice Department announced that the charges would be dropped two days before the opening of the 2009 AIPAC Convention…
