BDS: Thinking Outside the PLO Box
Samah Sabawi
Three months ago, the world stood still for one rare moment of absolute clarity as it grasped the implication of Israel’s imprisonment of a civilian population and its use of aid and medicine as a political bargaining chip and a means of collective punishment. That moment of clarity and world sympathy was what the Palestinians needed to break the siege of Gaza. That moment was squandered by a Palestinian leadership still chasing its own tail much to the amusement of its enemies, frustration of its friends and utter disappointment of the people it claims to represent. Anger cannot begin to describe the feelings of tens of thousands of families who are crammed into tents erected on the rubble of what was their home as they watch the endless bickering and shuffling back and forth of their leaders who don’t seem to get the gravity of their predicament. And while tons of food aid rots in Egypt prevented by Israel from entering into the Strip, while Egypt and the PA continue to dance the tango with Israeli officials, while Hamas continues to tighten its hold over the strip by silencing its opponents, and while the world loses that moment of great clarity, a transformation must and is taking place not only in the scarred minds of the Gaza population but also in the West Bank and in the minds of Palestinians everywhere…

The Collapse of “The Movement”; the Resistance and the Revolutionary Movement We Need
Andy Zee
…There are over a million dead in Iraq, 4 million refugees, civilians being slaughtered daily in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Yet, from within the United States mass protest, mass resistance, mass statements of condemnation are at an appallingly low level. An anti-war movement has not only been demobilized, but delivered into the war criminal enterprise of working to make Obama live up to his promise—a promise that Obama has always been clear about, that is nothing less than rescuing the U.S. from its multi-faceted crises. In an act which concentrates the treachery of this collapse, United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ), the largest anti-war coalition, at their national meeting in December 2008, voted to oppose organizing demonstrations on the 6th Anniversary of the Iraq War on March 19 and 21, 2009. In opposition to mounting a determined struggle to end the wars and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, and instead of calling people into the streets to stand with the people of the world, they decided “to mobilize a new base of people who have been inspired by Obama” in a four month campaign in commemoration of Martin Luther King titled, “Beyond War, A New Economy Is Possible: Yes We Can!”…

Truth and Idols…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
…The President of Iran rightly exclaimed – Israel, the Jewish state of Israel supported by 99% of the Jews living on stolen land – to be a racist and cruel entity. His “propos” are absolutely correct on that count. And look at the outrage and indignation of the Europeans, all ruffled in their holocaust sympathies. How come they do not extend their holocaust sympathies to the Palestinians living under a brutal occupation for over 60 years, a brutal occupation inflicted by those same holocaust survivors ?! And I do understand the elation and exaltation of all those “well meaning” “anti-zionist” supporters. I can even go as far as to say that I can understand their adulation and idealization of the President of Iran…if it were not for… If it were not for the blatant facts, the reality check list, the inescapable, inalterable truth – however much you try to deny it, suppress it, tamper with it, justify it, rationalize it, analyze it, dismiss it, falsify it, cover it, hide it, negate it… […] In other words, had it not been for the full participation of Iran in the imperialist, colonialist, zionist, racist, cruel, brutal, murderous, American occupation of Iraq, the Iraqi Resistance would have by now, already showed you in full technicolors, the V sign of Victory…

AIPAC is Not above The Law
by Mohamed Khodr
…A story in today’s Washington Post (April 22, 2009) suggests DOJ may drop its espionage case against AIPAC. I find this incredulous, outrageous, and a blatant application of double standards. The timing of this story after the revelation that Rep. Jane Harman was recorded speaking to an “agent” regarding a quid pro quo interference in this case in exchange for AIPAC’s support to become Chairwoman of the House’s Intel Committee is certainly troubling and smells of a deal to prevent further embarrassing revelations. This may explain why Rep. Nancy Pelosi blocked her chairmanship of the committee…

When the Deal Goes Down: Obama Signals Move to Save Bush Bigwigs on Torture
Chris Floyd
There has been much throwing about of brains on the matter of Barack Obama’s ballyhooed “turnaround” on the torture prosecution issue. As usual, there is much less to the Beltway puffery than meets the eye — although a key aspect of the burgeoning Torturegate affair can be found buried deep in the New York Times story on the subject. So what has happened so far? After his groveling trip on Monday to soothe the hurt feelings of the tender little babies at the CIA — who had been feeling unloved and uncherished since the tiniest ray of media light had shone briefly on their black arts — Obama then tacked back to soothe the rumblings of his progressive base, parts of which had been disturbed by their hero’s guarantee that no Bush torturer would ever face justice…

Attacks Commence
Dahr Jamail, t r u t h o u t
… An occupying power (the US) sets up a 100,000-strong militia composed of former resistance fighters and even some members of al-Qaeda, pays them each $300 per month to not attack occupation forces, and attacks decrease dramatically. Then, stop paying most of them and tell them they will be incorporated into Iraqi government security forces. Proceed to leave them high and dry as the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki begins targeting them – assassinating leaders, detaining fighters and threatening their families. Allow this plan to continue for over six months, unabated. Not surprisingly, the Sahwa are fighting back against US forces and those of the Iraqi government…

Report Details Pentagon Role in Torture Tactics
BOBBY GHOSH / WASHINGTON, D.C.
Opponents of last week’s release of memos detailing CIA interrogation techniques argue that they will provide enemies of the United States with a training manual to prepare their operatives for capture. The irony is that the U.S. military appears to have done the exact opposite, taking a training program that had been designed to prepare American soldiers to withstand torture by communist regimes seeking to extract false confessions and twisting it into a highly controversial interrogation manual…

The Fatal Thread: Torture, War and the Imperial Project
Chris Floyd
With the release of the U.S. Senate’s report on the Bush Administration torture program, it is now incontrovertibly clear – and officially established by the highest, most respectable Establishment institutions – that George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and a host of other top officials deliberately, willingly, and with malice aforethought, established a system of interrogation using brutal techniques that they knew were against the law. Hence the need for the torture memos that attempted to give retroactive legal cover for atrocities that were already taking place at the orders of the White House and the Pentagon. They were also told repeatedly that these tortures were ineffective at producing useful intelligence. (For more detail, see the excellent stories at Salon.com here and here.)

Palestinian artists resort to art to show Gaza suffering
Yousef Al-Helou
Scenes of devastation and makeshift tents are a common sight in some areas across the besieged Gaza strip. In the rubble of destroyed buildings, a group of Palestinian artists held an exhibition to highlight the sufferings of people in the besieged Gaza . They want to resort to art to show the resilience of Gazans against all the odds and to appreciate their steadfastness. Palestinian Artists in the besieged Gaza say they use their art and talents to shed light on the suffering of the people as reconstruction has not begun yet because Israel refuses to allow in building materials…

Israel Reinstates Punitive House Demolitions
Valentina Azarov for the Alternative Information Center (AIC)
A house demolition in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sur Baher.
The Israeli government has been demolishing houses in East Jerusalem and across the West Bank and Gaza Strip since it commenced its belligerent occupation of the Palestinian territories in 1967. There are three main types of house demolitions: operation, administrative and punitive. The last type is not only the most barbaric from a moral point of view but more importantly, from a legal perspective, constitutes collective punishment in the form of property destruction and generates some of the gravest violations of international humanitarian law, constituting a war crime when amounting to intentional and systematic “wanton destruction.”…

Israel: ‘Malfunction’ caused Gaza massacre
Ma’an News
The Israeli military said internal investigations showed it acted according to law during the three-week offensive against the Gaza Strip, but that ‘malfunctions’ resulted in the deaths of innocents. On Tuesday the military said it concluded five separate investigations into the shelling of UN installations, the targeting of medical personnel and facilities, the killing of civilians, the use of the incendiary weapon white phosphorus, and the destruction of buildings by ground forces…

“Hizzhonor:” Chicago Politics Under Richard M. Daley
Stephen Lendman
First the father, Richard J. (mayor from April 20, 1955 – December 20, 1976), now the son. To Chicagoans – “Hizzhonor,” and for some – “Hizzhonor Da Mare.” Authors Adam Cohen and Elizabeth Taylor called the elder an “American Pharaoh.” For former Chicago columnist, Mike Royko, he was “Boss” in his 1971 book by that title. When he died on December 20, 1976, Royko wrote: “If ever a man reflected a city, it was Richard J. Daley,” for better or worse. He was “strong (and) hard-driving” with Texas-sized ambitions, but also “arrogant, crude, conniving, ruthless, suspicious, intolerant, raucous, hot-tempered, devious, big and powerful.” …

The words of fishermen under fire
Eva Bartlett, In Gaza
In one of the latest acts of aggression against Palestinian fishermen fishing well-within their internationally-recognized legal limits of 20 nautical miles, on April 21st, the Israeli gunboats patrolling as close as a few kilometers off of Gaza’s coast abducted 4 more Palestinian fishermen and their 2 small ‘hassaka’ fishing boats, bringing the known number of abducted fishermen -taken while fishing in their own territorial waters -to at least 28, and stolen fishing boats to 13, with at least 5 fishermen known to have been injured at sea. The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) -Gaza Strip has been monitoring Israeli naval attacks on Palestinian fishermen and theft of fishing boats, nets, and equipment since August 2008, although Israel’s policy of bullying and even killing Palestinian fishermen goes back nearly a decade. Through video footage and photos taken from on-board fishing boats being attacked by much larger, faster, and militarily-equipped Israeli naval boats, ISM-Gaza has documented many of these attacks…

Ethnic cleansing, one home at a time
Marcy Newman writing from occupied East Jerusalem, Live from Palestine
In the Sadiyya neighborhood inside the Muslim quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City is the Jaber family home. There, three members of the Jaber family, as well as the Karaki family, have lived with their parents, and later spouses and children, since the 1930s. Like most homes inside the Old City, the residential space has an open center that is shared by those living inside. Six years ago Israeli police came to the house and told Nasser Jaber that his house no longer belonged to his family, but rather to Israeli colonists from the right-wing Messianic settler organization Ateret Cohanim whose racist ideology is closely aligned with Kach, a political party that advocates the expulsion of Palestinians. But when the Israeli colonial court sent its police to investigate, the court decided that the home indeed belonged to the Jaber family. The scenario was repeated the following year, in 2004, when the judge came to investigate who the house belonged to. Once again after visiting the home and looking at the papers it was decided that the home belonged to the Jaber family. But the story did not end there…

Pope Snub Upsets Gaza Christians
IOL
Christians in the bombed-out, Israel-closed Gaza Strip feel abandoned because Pope Benedict XVI of the Vatican will snub their coastal enclave during his upcoming several-day visit to the Holy Lands. “We are disappointed that he will not visit the Strip and see the scale of destruction with his eyes,” Hala Saleeba, 41, a teacher in the Holy Family Christian School in Gaza. “The one who sees with eyes is not the same as the one who hears with ears.” Benedict XVI will arrive in Jordan on Friday, May 8, at the start of his several-day visit to the Holy Lands…

Zionism’s latest casulties of its racism
Marcy Newman, body on the line
Is ethnic cleansing not an example of racism? the forced removal of people from their land, from their homes? just like the united states did to indigenous peoples in the americas. here are the latest such examples in the zionist entity. but, no…zionism isn’t racism. what is it then, exactly?..

What the New York Times unwittingly reveals about the war in Afghanistan
Alex Lantier, WSWS
Over last two weeks, the New York Times has published a series of articles on conditions facing US soldiers fighting in Afghanistan. In describing soldiers’ lives and calling attention to the hellish conditions in Afghanistan, the Times articles reveal considerably more than what one suspects their authors set out to explain. For anyone reading them with a degree of historical consciousness, they depict a colonial war waged against an entire population, by US troops who see little purpose behind the violence they are unleashing on the Afghan population…

Nobel Laureate Accuses Israel of ‘Ethnic Cleansing’
AFP
Nobel peace laureate Mairead Maguire on Tuesday accused Israel of “ethnic cleansing” policies in annexed east Jerusalem, where the municipality plans to tear down almost 90 Arab homes. “I believe the Israeli government is carrying out a policy of ethnic cleansing against Palestinians here in east Jerusalem,” said Maguire, who won the 1976 Nobel prize for her efforts at reaching a peaceful solution to the violence in Northern Ireland…

Spilled milk? Iraqi-American academics ..
Imad Khadduri
In a recent distribution, an impressive list (4.5 MB PDF) is offered of more than 300 Iraqi-American academics who were invited to attend an “Iraqi Academic Conference” during March 14-15, 2009 “To Help Improve and Sustain Higher Education in Iraq”. This event was hosted by The National Academies, Washington D.C. in collaboration with the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Iraq in Wash. D.C. Impressive, indeed. But what did they meet for? What was the purpose of their gathering? What is the connect with Iraq?…

Norwegian lawyers to accuse Israeli leaders of war crimes
AFP
Israel’s former prime minister Ehud Olmert and other top officials could face legal action in Norway over the Gaza offensive after six Norwegian lawyers said Tuesday they would accuse them of war crimes. The lawyers, who plan to file their complaint with Norway’s chief prosecutor on Wednesday, said they will call for the arrest and extradition of Olmert as well as former foreign affairs minister Tzipi Livni, Defence Minister Ehud Barak and seven senior Israeli army officers…

Post-Election Coverage of Haiti’s Sham Elections
Stephen Lendman
What if a national election was held and virtually no one showed up? That’s precisely what happened in Haiti. On April 19, scheduled senatorial elections were to fill 12 open seats. However, after majority Fanmi Lavalas (FL) candidates were disqualified on a first time ever procedural technicality, party leaders called for a national boycott, and Haitians responded overwhelmingly with estimates of as few as 3% of eligible voters participating…
