America’s Afghan War: The Real World versus Obama’s Marketed Imagery
First Bush then Obama and their NATO allies have been killing twice as many civilian women and children than civilian men in America’s Afghan war
Prof. Marc Herold
On March 31, 2009, Jon Stewart in his “Daily Show” announced Commander-in-Chief Obama’s mission of “Redefinition Accomplished” was in full swing. A new Orwellian vocabulary more soothing and politically correct has been invented and marketed to the American citizenry by Obama. But as Peter Baker of the New York Times noted, “for all the shifting words, Mr. Obama has left the bulk of Bush’s national security infrastructure intact so far.” In the real world, average Afghans and Pashtuns in the Pakistani border areas experience this continuing brutality daily as I shall now document, but Americans are largely oblivious remaining enthralled in the puffery of “Yes, We Can” and “Change We Can Believe In.” The phrase “civilian casualties” is non-existent in Obama’s vocabulary as a search of Google reveals. Dead Afghan and Pashtun civilians have simply been redefined as non-existent…

The Logic of Resistance
William C. Carlotti
It should be apparent that the problem in Palestine is not just simply a problem of checkpoints, human rights abuses, the wall, home demolitions, the architecture of occupation or even the siege of Gaza; the core of the problem is the illegal theft, colonization and occupation of a whole country. These are only symptoms of the Jewish nationalism expressed in the cancerous ideology called Zionism. It is an ideology that has been organized into the World Zionist Organization with branches in all of the countries of Europe, in the United States and in dozens of other countries ranging from Australia to Mexico to South Africa. The Organization held its 35th Zionist Congress in 2006 in Jerusalem with some 2000 delegates and observers from all over the world. 510 delegates participated in its proceedings including 145 delegates from the United States…

Afghan Resistance Statement
The Obama strategy also kills a four-day-old baby
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan
American soldiers martyred a four-day-old baby in addition to causing death and injury to four other members of the family on the night of 21 Wrai [10 April] in an attack on a house in Alidai village in Gorbaz district of Khost province. Although the Americans accepted responsibility for the incident the next day and offered a so-called apology for causing tragedy to a family and killing a four-day-old baby, such an apology and excuses after causing terror is unacceptable, because this is not the first and will not be the last act of viciousness by the Americans in killing, persecuting and terrorizing civilians. They have been continuing such crimes for the past eight years and resorting to new forms of taking revenge on the Afghan people. In doing so they want to show to the Afghans that even the killing of their four-day-old baby in its cradle is admissible in America…

Obama’s Justice Department Moves to Squash NSA Spying Suits
Tom Burghardt, Antifascist Calling…
Since fatuously declaring his to be a “change” administration, President Barack Obama has quickly donned the blood-spattered mantle of state secrecy and executive privilege worn by the Bush regime. On Friday April 3, the Department of Justice filed a motion to dismiss one of the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s (EFF) landmark lawsuits against illegal spying by the National Security Agency (NSA)…

Deserted
By SIGRIDUR VIDIS JONSDOTTIR, NYTimes
What does it feel like to raise a newborn baby in an inhospitable desert where scorpions crawl about and sandstorms threaten to bring down one’s tent? Lubna Falah is about to find out. She will soon deliver her baby. This is not her first child, but she has never tried to raise one in a tent. In Baghdad, Lubna had a beautiful home. That was then. Now she is left with bad dreams and repeated nightmares. Lubna is an Iraqi Palestinian, a double refugee, living in the desert close to the border with Syria. Her ancestors fled Palestine 60 years ago when Jewish forces took control of their home in Haifa, and now she is trying to flee Iraq. She is the sister of my friend Lina. The sisters never thought they would end up in a tent. Nor did they foresee what would happen to Lina’s husband: One sunny afternoon he was taken from his home by Shiite militia, then brutally tortured and later beheaded. Then acid was poured over his head. His facial features were gone, and his family’s life in Baghdad was forever gone. For days after that, Lina was unable to speak. She would open her mouth but not a single word would come out. Lina was born in Baghdad, raised in Baghdad and loved Baghdad. But after the Americans invaded, Palestinians were no longer welcome in Iraq. They are seen as Saddam’s people — he gave them free housing and utilities…

NATO: slaughter of civilians and drugs
Nebojsha VUKOVIC (Serbia)
On April, 4, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) marked its 60th jubilee. In Serbia, my home country, many people are doomed not to celebrate their 60th birthdays- they will die of cancer. In 1999 NATO bombed Serbia with depleted uranium bombs, which caused a cancer outbreak in the region. Serbia’s soil, water and air will remain polluted for a few more decades, taking lives of hundreds of Serbs…

Torture of Detainees under CIA Custody: Damning Exposé of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
Stephen Lendman
On March 12, Mark Danner, in a New York Times op-ed and The New York Review of Books, wrote about the ICRC’s revelations of “US Torture: Voices from the Black Sites.” He said George Bush (in 2007) “informed the world that the United States had created a dark and secret universe to hold and interrogate captured ‘terrorists,’ “ – at locations outside America, Guantanamo and elsewhere. Operated by the CIA, it “used an alternative set of procedures…designed to be safe, to comply with our laws, our Constitution and our treaty obligations. The Department of Justice reviewed the authorized methods extensively and determined them to be lawful.”…

Call From Gaza
Hiyam Noir
Please take a few minutes to read the call-out below from a broad Gaza-based prisoner solidarity campaign made up of a coalition of prisoner rights groups, local and international activists, prisoner families and Ministry of Detainees representatives in Gaza. Friday April 17th is the international day of solidarity with Palestinian prisoners. Just over 11,000 are behind bars in occupation prisons inside the apartheid lines and outside the ghetto walls of the West Bank and Gaza. Prisoners are a community under siege which represents every faction in Palestine. Solidarity between prisoners inside Israeli jails crosses all political borders. They have sacrificed their individual freedom for collective freedom…

Iraqi leaders ‘ignoring murder of homosexuals’
Telegraph
In recent weeks, 25 young men and boys have been killed in the country and gay rights groups claim the government has given tacit support to the death squads by staying silent on the crimes. The lack of action by the authorities has prompted Amnesty International to the Iraqi President, Nouri al-Maliki, demanding “urgent and concerted action” by his government to stop the killings. The majority of the deadly attacks have taken place in the Baghdad suburb of Sadr City, controlled by ultra-conservative Shia militia. The bodies of four gay men, each bearing a sign with the Arabic word for “pervert” on their chests, were discovered in Sadr City three weeks ago. No arrests have been made. Amnesty said the murders appeared to have been committed by militiamen and relatives of the victims, who had been incited by religious leaders who condemned ‘deviancy’…

Iran offers to train Afghan police
Ben Farmer, Telegraph
“We have announced our readiness to train the Afghan police,” Esmaeel Ahmadi-Moghadam, Iran’s national police chief. But he added that there had been no talks with Nato on “any direct co-operation with foreign forces in Afghanistan”. Tehran’s offer follows US overtures to Iran as it tries to include Afghanistan’s powerful neighbour in a new White House strategy to defeat the country’s insurgency…

The Red Cross Torture Report: What It Means
Mark Danner
When it comes to torture, it is not what we did but what we are doing. It is not what happened but what is happening and what will happen. In our politics, torture is not about whether or not our polity can “let the past be past”—whether or not we can “get beyond it and look forward.” Torture, for Dick Cheney and for President Bush and a significant portion of the American people, is more than a repugnant series of “procedures” applied to a few hundred prisoners in American custody during the last half-dozen or so years—procedures that are described with chilling and patient particularity in this authoritative report by the International Committee of the Red Cross.Torture is more than the specific techniques—the forced nudity, sleep deprivation, long-term standing, and suffocation by water,” among others—that were applied to those fourteen “high-value detainees” and likely many more at the “black site” prisons secretly maintained by the CIA on three continents…

The Rwanda Genocide Fabrications
Human Right Watch, Alison Des Forges and Disinformation on Central Africa
Keith Harmon Snow
On 12 February 2009, Alison Des Forges, a senior researcher with Human Rights Watch (HRW) for more than 20 years, was killed when Continental Airlines Flight 3407 crashed on route to Buffalo, New York. Des Forges was widely cited as a staunch critic of the Rwandan military government controlled by Paul Kagame and the victors of the war in Rwanda, 1990-1994. In the ongoing life-and-death struggle to reveal the truth about war crimes and genocide in Central Africa, competing factions on all sides have posthumously embraced Alison Des Forges as an activist challenging power and a purveyor of truth and justice against all odds. Meanwhile, in March, 2009, based on false accusations of genocide issued by the Kagame regime—and given the close relations between Rwanda and the Obama administration’s former Clintonite officials—the U.S. Department of Homeland Security began the process of revisiting all immigration cases of Rwandan asylum seekers and criminalizing innocent refugees…

Israel’s Strikes on Sudan
Globalizing Politicide
SEAN McMAHON
Three times since the start of 2009, including on 17 January and 11 February, Israel has attacked the sovereign state of Sudan. Reports vary, but it seems clear that Israel executed the bombings using American-supplied F-15 and F-16 fighter planes and unmanned drones and killed or injured at least 50 people. These attacks represent obvious violations of international law. Not as obvious, but more importantly, the attacks also represent a renewed globalizing of Israel’s policy of politicide. They are the most recent instances of Israel making global its policy of destroying the national existence of the Palestinians. As such they represent a very real and increasing threat to individual and international peace and security, particularly to the people of the post-colonial south, but also those of the imperial north…

Obama administration ends Somali pirate standoff with lethal force
Joe Kishore
US special operations forces carried out a commando operation Sunday against Somali pirates holding the captain of a US freight vessel. The captain, Richard Phillips, was freed and military sharpshooters killed three of the Somalis. Piracy has become increasingly common in the waters off the coast of Somalia—in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden—as the political and social situation in the country has deteriorated. However, this is the first hijacking involving a US-flagged vessel. Most of these incidents are resolved peacefully, and the ransom demanded by hostage-takers is seen by freight companies as a cost of doing business. In this case, the hostage-taking was quickly transformed into a standoff between the pirates and the US military. As international media attention focused on the incident, the Obama administration saw it as an opportunity to reassert US military power and demonstrate Obama’s own willingness to make the “tough decision” to use lethal force…
