Urgent Appeal: In Gaza a Siege fire instead of Ceasefire
Sameh Akram Habeeb
Actions strongly required as borders are severely restricted… Patients still dying and death toll 313 as no exit, no enough medicines… Tens of thousands displaced… Re construction not allowed… Extreme poverty and unemployment paralyzing life… Freedom of Movement is a taboo…
The European Campaign to End the Siege on Gaza, (ECESG) calls upon all International Organization working on the Gaza Strip to intervene immediately. The siege is not only suffocating the people of Gaza, depriving them of basic necessities, it is also breaking international law. In the wake of the siege, which even after three years shows no sign of abating, numerous international condemnation desperate plea have been shamelessly rejected by the Israeli authorities…

Hero Blues: Liberals Line Up With Militarism
Chris Floyd
Joan Walsh gives us another bravura performance in a new episode of what will apparently be a very long-running show, “Deep in the Tank for Obama.” In her latest outing, Walsh is transported near to tears by images of the president greeting soldiers during his unannounced visit to Iraq. (Yes, even though the “surge” has been “a success beyond our wildest dreams,” as Obama instructed us last year, American leaders still have to creep into the “liberated” land like a thief in the night.) In worshipful tones that one might have heard directed at the president at any point in the previous eight years from, say, National Review Online or Pajamas Media, Walsh gawps in awe at the bonding of the legions with their imperator…

Jewish settler terrorists rampage at Arab village, casualties reported
From Khalid Amayreh in al-Khalil
Religious Jewish terrorists on Wednesday attacked a small Arab village north of al-Khalil (Hebron), shooting randomly on civilians and vandalizing homes and businesses. Eyewitnesses said as many as a hundred settler terrorists descended on the small village of Safa, 10 kilometers northwest of al-Khalil, with the purpose of carrying out a pogrom against local inhabitants. The terrorists were escorted by several Israeli army soldiers who reportedly made no effort to stop the terrorists who were shouting “death to the Arabs.”…

US expands war into Pakistan
Missile strikes to be intensified
Keith Jones
The head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, and Richard Holbrooke, the US Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, visited Islamabad Monday and Tuesday to press Pakistani authorities to intensify their efforts to staunch the anti-American insurgency in the country’s Pashtun-speaking Afghan borderlands. Unveiled by US President Barack Obama late last month, Washington’s new strategy to pacify Afghanistan calls for a dramatic escalation of the war—US troop strength in Afghanistan is to almost double from 38,000 to 68,000—and for the war’s further expansion in Pakistan, both through coordinated action with Islamabad and unilateral US strikes inside Pakistan…

A third intifada?
Marcy Newman, Body on the line
…while the attacks on Palestinians is beyond reprehensible, what is beautiful to see everyone resisting, and resisting together. I hope this gains momentum. we need to see more of resistance like this. One of my friends who was beaten up by the Israeli terrorists in al Quds saturday night defending the jaber home from the israeli colonists, who eventually stole the house and kicked out the family (2 of whom were sent to jail), came to have lunch with me today. he said the resistance he is seeing in the old city feels like an intifada is brewing. a new intifada. A third intifada. An intifada to liberate the land. 100% of it. Let’s hope…

Will Obama Vacate Iraq?
Nasir Khan

On February 27, 2009 President Barack Obama delivered his much-anticipated policy speech on Iraq. The important point in his announcement was the withdrawal of some U.S. troops from Iraq by August 31, 2010. However, it did not mean an end to the American occupation of Iraq, or an end to an illegal genocidal war that the Bush-Cheney administration had started. Despite his high-blown rhetoric about withdrawing from Iraq, Obama did not deal with many important questions. Thus what was not said cannot be regarded as an oversight but rather as an indication of how the new administration intends to pursue its policy objectives. Those who had wished to see a break by the new administration with the Bush-Cheney administration’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are concerned because they detect the continuation of the goal of the U.S. domination, which the American rulers usually refer to as the ‘U.S. interests’ in the region…

Bush Shoe Thrower’s Family Fearful
By Ismail Kamal Kushkush, IOL Correspondent
Despite his jail term reduction, the family of Munthadar al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who shot to fame after hurling his shoes at then visiting US President George Bush, remains fearful for his life. “Munthadar was severely tortured in jail and that is enough to have the court’s ruling annulled,” his brother Uday told IslamOnline.net in Khartoum. Zaidi, 30, was convicted by a Baghdad court on March 12 of assaulting a foreign head of state on an official visit to Iraq after throwing his shoes one after the other at Bush during his farewell visit to Baghdad in December…

Israel’s Two-Sided Coin
Joharah Baker
For Palestinians, it is hard to figure out what all the commotion is about. True, newly sworn in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is clearly not the most sympathetic person to the Palestinians’ plight. Neither is his foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman nor is the overwhelming majority of his cabinet. It is undeniable that Israel’s new government is one of the country’s most right wing governments yet. So, to the outside world, even the United States, this is ringing alarm bells, pushing panic buttons everywhere. Except, that is, among the Palestinians. Benjamin Netanyahu or Tzipi Livni or Ehud Barak. What’s the difference? A few slogans and watery pledges to work for peace? Photo-ops with Palestinian leaders, cordial handshakes that hide deceitful agendas?..

‘Progressive’ Warmongers
Liberals rally ‘round Obama’s war
Justin Raimondo
As President Barack Obama launches a military effort that promises to dwarf the Bush administration’s Iraqi adventure in scope and intensity, the “progressive” community is rallying around their commander in chief as obediently and reflexively as the neocon-dominated GOP did when we invaded Iraq. As John Stauber points out over at the Center for Media and Democracy Web site, the takeover of the antiwar movement by the Obamaites is nearly complete. He cites MoveOn.org as a prime but not sole example…

Some Iraqis fear sectarian violence is returning
by Matthew Schofield / McClatchy Newspapers
Falah abu Hasan was explaining life in a squatter’s camp when he noticed that his wife was giving him a hard stare. “I am sorry,” he apologized for abruptly concluding. “The militias, the Mahdi Army, is back. They hadn’t been around in a few months, but they are back now. They are checking on the people.” And, like that, the conversation with a Westerner was over. Was it a warning, a vague threat that after declining chaos here, the thin layer of calm was cracking?…

Academics and specialists from Iran, the United States and Europe have been meeting regularly in the Swiss city of Geneva for high level but informal talks. Switzerland’s Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey said she was aware of the ongoing contacts over the past few years but had not played an active role. “The talks are on a purely informal level and the foreign ministry is not involved,” Calmy-Rey said on Tuesday. PAKISTAN: 300 Pashtuns held in crackdown
Dictatorship Watch
Lahore City police Tuesday launched a massive crackdown against Pashtuns belonging to NWFP and Afghanistan and arrested hundreds of them during raids at their colonies in the provincial capital. … (…) Anyone who knows the general ins and outs of the occupation or iraq and Afghanistan would know how Shiite were used against Sunnis in Iraq and how Northern Alliance was used against the rest of the country in Afghanistan. They would also in the know about the division of Baghdad and othe rparts of the country on ethnic lines. The same game of balkanizing Paksitan has begun. Now the terrorists are not just al-Qaeda and taliban. All Pashtun are now target. All Pashtun are now providing logistical support to terrorists. all Pashtun are suspect. What a nice way to widen the divide along the lines proposed for the division of the country…

In Spite of Persistent Efforts to the Solve the Problem of Access to Medical Treatment Outside the Gaza Strip, PCHR Calls upon the Two Governments in Ramallah and Gaza to Save the Lives of Gazan Patients before It Is Too Late
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
PCHR calls upon the ministries of health in Ramallah and Gaza to take immediate steps, including cancellation of all decisions that have led to halting the transfer of Gazan patients to hospitals outside the Gaza Strip, to ensure access of those patients to medical treatment. PCHR holds Israeli occupation authorities on the first hand, and the ministries of health in Ramallah and Gaza responsible for such deterioration, as the two governments in Ramallah and Gaza have taken a series of measures which have led to halting the transfer of Gazan patients to Israeli hospitals since last January, and to hospitals in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, since last March.

Obama stages surprise visit amid renewed bloodshed in Iraq
By Bill Van Auken
President Barack Obama staged an unannounced visit to Baghdad Tuesday afternoon as a series of car-bombings and renewed clashes between Sunni militias and Iraqi security forces contradicted claims of “success” for the US neo-colonial venture in Iraq. Such claims, promoted by both the US government and the media, were also belied by the extraordinary secrecy and security surrounding the visit by Obama, who was forced to sneak into the country in the same way as George W. Bush in years past and was unable to leave Camp Victory, the sprawling US military base near the airport…

Ahmadinejad welcomes ‘honest’ talks with US
Daily Times
The Iranian president said on Wednesday his country welcomes talks with the United States should the American president prove to be “honest” in extending its hand toward Iran, one of the strongest signals yet that Tehran welcomes Barack Obama’s calls for dialogue. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s comments come after Obama said his administration is looking for opportunities to engage Iran and pledged to rethink Washington’s relationship with Tehran…

US to attend group nuclear talks with Iran
MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writer Matthew Lee
The Obama administration said Wednesday it will participate directly in group talks with Iran over its suspect nuclear program, another significant shift from President George W. Bush’s policy toward a nation he labeled part of an axis of evil. The State Department said the United States would be at the table “from now on” when senior diplomats from the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany meet with Iranian officials to discuss the nuclear issue. The Bush administration had generally shunned such meetings, although it attended one last year…

1600 Palestinian detainees need medical attention
Saed Bannoura – IMEM
The Palestinian Center for Defending the Detainees reported that the number of sick detainees in Israeli prisons is gradually increasing due to the Israeli policy of medical neglect which is causing further deterioration in the health conditions of the detainees. The center said that there are 1600 sick detainees who need urgent attention. The center added that the rooms in the detention centers lack proper ventilation and are dark day and night, which is increasing humidity…

CLEANSING THE LAND OF BREAD AND ARABS
DesertPeace Editorial
…That very same Torah teaches the Jew not to hate… where is the uproar when that is violated? When an extreme rightwing member of the Knesset utters anti Arab remarks… one representing a so-called religious party, what is done? He is provided with extra protection! (I was distressed to learn that this bastard lives very close to my home). Where is the uproar against his madness? WHERE???
Where is the uproar against the Neanderthal rabbis that have recently called for the expulsion or the genocide of the Palestinians? WHERE??? As in previous years, the Palestinians living on the ‘other side’ of the great wall of apartheid will be sealed in for the duration of the Holiday (8 days), literally making the State of Israel Arabrein for that period of time. Where is the uproar against this? WHERE??? …

Daniel McGowan, Another “War on Terrorism” Victim
Stephen Lendman
…In total, McGowan was charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit arson, 14 counts of arson, and two counts of use or possession of a destructive device. If tried and convicted of the latter two, he faced a minimum 30 year sentence. For all counts, he faced a mandatory life sentence – even though he neither hurt or intended to hurt any person or animal and acted only to defend the earth against real environmental terrorists against whom no charges were brought. Given the possibility of life in prison, McGowan pled guilty to minor arson offenses against Jefferson Poplar Farm and Superior Lumber in return for the Justice Department dropping the more serious charges, including using destructive devices. He did so on condition that he wouldn’t implicate or identify anyone but himself. Three other co-defendants did the same. In his statement to the judge he “accept(ed) full responsibility for (his) actions and at the same time remain(s) true to (his) strongly held beliefs.” He said his “actions were not those of (a) terrorist but of a concerned young man who was deeply troubled by the destruction of Oregon’s beautiful old-growth forests and the dangers of genetically modified trees.”…
