White Phosphorus Bombs, a Legacy of Suffering (VIDEO)
By Yousef Al-Helou for Salem-News.com
During Israel’s 3-week long offensive on Gaza launched on December 27th, the Israeli army used internationally banned weapons according to foreign military and medical experts. American made white phosphorus shells were used in populated areas across the Gaza strip, home to about 1.5 million people. Nafez Abu Shaban, head of burns department at Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical center, has treated dozens of patients who suffered sever burns, he is keeping a piece of phosphorus covered under sand in jar to prevent it from exposing to oxygen..

Richard Sanders
The Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT), a Canadian anti-war network based in Ottawa, has published a detailed report exposing Canadian corporate complicity in the Iraq War. This report highlights Canadian war industry exports for 39 varieties of war planes deployed in the invasion and occupation of Iraq since March 2003. COAT’s report lists 130 Canadian military companies and provides hundreds of internet links on the key products and services they have provided for many of the world’s deadliest weapons systems used in Iraq…

Al-Maliki Draws U.S. Troops into Crackdown on Sunnis
By Gareth Porter*
…The uprising in Fadhil marked the first time that Awakening Council units had responded with force to a government campaign of repression of selected Sunni militia leaders that began as early as spring 2008. Despite reported U.S. efforts to reassure Sunnis that they are not being abandoned to repression by the Shi’a government, the U.S.-assisted operation against Sunni militiamen protesting the arrest of Adel al-Mashadani in the Fadhil neighbourhood has already prompted threats by Sunni militia commanders in other neighbourhoods to go back to armed resistance…

PFLP slams Fateh and Hamas for their inability to achieve reconciliation
Saed Bannoura – IMEMC
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) slammed on Thursday Fateh and Hamas movements for failing to achieve reconciliation, and demanded the two factions achieve a deal that ends the internal rifts and restores unity. The PFLP’s statement came in a speech by Qasim Hassanen, a political leader of the front, who addressed thousands of Palestinians marching in Gaza for unity, and said that Hamas and Fateh must achieve a deal in their ongoing Cairo talks… Hassanen added that “there is no winner in internal conflicts”, and that Palestine needs unity and struggle against the occupation, not rifts and internal divisions…

Iran Policies and Agendas, Sophisticated and Blurred
Dr. Murad Alazzany, UPM University, Malaysia – For Yemen Post
…The Iranian politicians keep claiming that their stand and support for Islamic issues throughout the Muslim world emanate from their Islamic orientation. Nevertheless, their claims are not as they are stated but complicated, blurred and unclear. While Iran supports Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Islamic movement of Hamas in Palestine, it leads a conspiracy against Taliban in Afghanistan and the Sunni Muslims in Iraq. It supported America to invade Afghanistan and showed a great cooperation with it to invade Iraq. By adopting such contradicting polices, Iran in Afghanistan appears totally different from that Iran in Lebanon and Palestine…However, we really wish that Arabs can adopt policies which are as sophisticated as those of Iran. For the past thirty years, Arabs appear to be distracted and confused… One wonders how pathetic it was when they left the Palestinians alone on a siege facing the ferocity of Israeli war machines. Yesterday, Gaza was the very embodiment of resistance but the most hegemonic Arab Countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia chose to be indifferent. They blamed Hamas of receiving a support from Iran and one wonders what Hams was supposed to do when it was classified as an enemy by a brother. We have no right to blame the Islamic resistance of Hamas for accepting the Iranian support as long as the Arab regimes choose to isolate it and to classify as an enemy…

Fake Faith and Epic Crimes
JOHN PILGER
These are extraordinary times. With the United States and Britain on the verge of bankruptcy and committing to an endless colonial war, pressure is building for their crimes to be prosecuted at a tribunal similar to that which tried the Nazis at Nuremberg. This defined rapacious invasion as “the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.” International law would be mere farce, said the chief US chief prosecutor at Nuremberg, Supreme Court justice Robert Jackson, “if, in future, we do not apply its principles to ourselves.”…

The False Darfur ‘Genocide’ Numbers
Moon of Alabama
Headlined In Defense of Genocide the neoconned WaPo editors condemn the Arab league for hosting Sudan’s President Bashir while at the same time accusing Israel of war-crimes. The polemic includes this sentence T]he United Nations has reported more than 300,000 civilian deaths in Darfur as a result of the genocidal campaign sponsored by Mr. Bashir. There are three false claims in this one sentence. As these false claims are often repeated from the far right to the interventionist left, let me try to dispel them once and for all. 1. The number of 300,000 is false. 2. The UN did not ‘report’ that number. 3. There was no genocide in Darfur. The 300,000 number is simply taken from hot air…

Iraqi Shoes Revisited: A Pair of Narratives
Ramzy Baroud
It’s remarkable how some in the media can cleverly manipulate a story by avoiding its essence and focusing on marginal details. The chucking of a pair of shoes at former President George W. Bush by an Iraqi journalist, Muntazer al-Zaidi during a Baghdad press conference, on December 14, 2008 is a case in point. Most Arab and Muslim media – and other media around the world, save mainstream western media – framed al-Zaidi’s deed within its proper context, that of a horrific, genocidal war, bloody and humiliating occupation and the colonial hubris of a superpower that gave itself the right and ‘moral’ justification to devastate a sovereign nation for the sake of oil, Israel and the desire for sheer hegemony…

Israel/Occupied Palestinian Territories: As US arms shipment reaches Israel, President Obama urged to halt further exports
Amnesty International (AI)
The new delivery to Israel of a massive consignment of US munitions, revealed by Amnesty International today, throws into question whether President Obama will act to prevent the US fuelling further Israeli attacks against civilians that may amount to war crimes, as were perpetrated in Gaza. According to new information received by Amnesty International, the Wehr Elbe, a German cargo ship which had been chartered and controlled by US Military Sealift Command, docked and unloaded its cargo of reportedly over 300 containers at the Israeli port of Ashdod, just 40 km north of Gaza by road. The German ship left the USA for Israel on 20 December, one week before the start of Israeli attacks on Gaza, carrying 989 containers of munitions, each of them 20 feet long with a total estimated net weight of 14,000 tons…

Gaza Aftermath (6) “I know every inch of this land…”
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
As farmer Jamal al-Bassyuni plucked a stalk of ripening wheat, a posse of young men danced in his field. The dancers were flanked by a lively crowd, many of them women wearing the traditional Palestinian embroidered thob dress. Despite the nearby rubble of destroyed houses, and tracts of land laid to waste by bulldozers and tanks, the mood was defiantly sunny. Local farmers and their supporters were celebrating Palestinian Land Day. Land Day was launched in 1976, as a commemoration of the deaths of six Palestinian citizens of northern Israel killed by the Israeli military as they demonstrated against expropriation of their land. It has become an important symbolic day of action across the Occupied Palestinian Territory, highlighting the plight faced by farmers like Jamal Bassyuni and his family, who live in Izbat Beit Hanoun on the northern edge of the Gaza Strip…

Maliki poised to run provinces with Sadr as ally

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is to join forces with radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr in several provincial councils, leaving a key ally out in the cold, political sources said Wednesday. Maliki’s allies in the State of Law Coalition swept provincial elections on January 31 but failed to win an absolute majority in most areas, opening the way to power-sharing alliances. Political sources told AFP that Maliki was to form a pact with Sadr and shun Abdel Aziz Hakim of the Islamic Supreme Council. The Growing Storm in Baghdad
Dahr Jamail, t r u t h o u t | Perspective
Last weekend, the Iraqi government arrested an Awakening Group leader of a Baghdad neighborhood, then moved into the area. With the help of US occupation forces, they disarmed the militiamen under his control, but only after fighting broke out between US-backed Iraqi government security forces and the US-formed Sunni Awakening Group militia. This disturbing event is the realization of what most Iraqis have long feared – that the relative calm in Iraq today would eventually be broken when fighting erupts between these two entities. The US policy that has led to this recent violence has been long in the making, as it has only been a matter of time before the tenuous truce between the groups came unglued…

Dozens of Israeli settlers backed by police took over a Palestinian house in the Old City of Jerusalem on Thursday morning. Ma’an’s correspondent observed settlers raiding the house of Naser Jaber, in the As-Sa’diyeh neighborhood of the Old City. A scuffle took place between the owner and the settlers before police intervened, allowing the settlers to take control of the house and sending the owner away. Israeli police then imposed a neighborhood lockdown, prohibiting residents from entering or leaving their homes. Several youth were seized during ensuing clashes in the tense half hour between the arrival of the settlers and the total closure of the area…

NATO celebrates 60th anniversary by expanding Central Asian war
Stefan Steinberg
Discussions at the NATO summit that takes place Friday and Saturday will be dominated by the occupation of Afghanistan—the most protracted war carried out by the military alliance in its 60-year history. A polarisation is taking place between the US and Britain on the one side and leading European countries on the other over how best to prosecute the war. Both sides are ready to intensify the conflict at enormous cost to the Afghan and Pakistani populations. Increasingly, however, European countries, with France and Germany at the fore, are demanding that their own contributions be rewarded by increased influence over imperialist decision-making bodies, including NATO…

With the country is already plagued by daily attacks, aid groups are warning that a planned US troop surge in Afghanistan would sink the central Asian Muslim country into abyss. “(The) planned increases in troops and military operations during 2009 are likely to lead to higher levels of displacement, further restrictions to social services, and greater impediments for aid agencies to reach civilians in need of protection and assistance,” 11 aid agencies said in a joint report on Friday, April 3. “Yet such considerations are not being adequately factored into international security strategies.”..

Time for Sunni militias to wake up!
Fatih Abdulsalam, Azzaman
…surprisingly enough, the number of casualties Sunni militias have offered, and are still offering, would defy any logic. While the government says al-Qaeda is almost defeated and the few remaining pockets of its operatives are no longer operational, these ‘Awakening Sunni councils’ have borne the brunt of the massacres taking place in the country. There has been a premeditated and organized campaign of liquidation of the tribal leaders commanding the militias. Strangely enough, the government has been blaming all the way through the defeated al-Qaeda for the attacks targeting the militias. And most recently, government troops, aided by U.S. occupation forces, were employed in the streets and alleyways of two low-income and heavily Sunni populated Baghdad neighborhoods, namely al-Fadhil and al-Kifah. The attack was carried out under the pretext of arresting a Sunni militia leader. But this particular person or any of his aides could have been arrested without invading two densely populated neighborhoods of the capital. There was no need to send tanks, armored personnel carriers, snipers and helicopter gunships to terrorize residential quarters when the declared target was the arrest of one person…

Gaza: Poverty in the shadows
Eva Bartlett | In Gaza
I met Amar Battran (39) selling green, plastic I.D. card covers, the kind every Palestinian outside of occupied Jerusalem and Israel carries (where they carry blue I.D. covers). I had no need of one but listened as Amar spoke of his poverty. I’d been at the bank, withdrawing donation money, and at the Western Union collecting other donated funds, all for cases I’d written about. Amar waited outside as I went between bank, w. union and the money changers (no shekels in the bank ATM). A woman, Alia, also loitered, hoping for some help.
I asked the teller in the western union office if he’d seen the man and women begging outside before. He told me ‘every day’. I asked if they were truly poor. He said ‘desperately’. This level of grinding poverty is still relatively new enough in Gaza that Palestinians aren’t accustomed to begging. There was less need when families had work, when buildings weren’t so thoroughly-bombed and destroyed, when borders were open, when life was possible…
