Email to Albert, Soldz, Chomsky, Pilger, Herman and many others
Gabriele Zamparini
I’d just like to send my congratulations to ZNet for once again publishing rubbish on the very important issue of Iraq so-called “casualties” since the US led the supreme international crime against that defenseless country. Amazing we still call that “war”, isn’t it? Anyway, this time ZNet published Stephen Soldz’s feelings: “This error, and its possible coverup in subsequent public statements means that, in my opinion, we can no longer rely upon the Lancet II mortality estimates. If one major methodological detail was distorted, we simply cannot know whether other aspects of the study were carried out as stated. Until and unless there is far greater detail on these methods, I do not feel that their estimate of 650,000 post-invasion surplus deaths can be trusted.” Stephen doesn’t tell anything new, he doesn’t provide any evidence or scientific elements but he “feels” the Lancet’s cannot be trusted and felt the urgency to write his “feelings” and to publish them on ZNet. I hope he feels better now. Given the notorious past on this issue, I’m sure I’m not the only one to not be surprised to find this anti-scientific article – in fact propaganda for the mass murderers, unless Stephen can give us some scientific evidence so we can share his feelings – on ZNet…

Information on a Merry Go Round…
Layla Anwar, An Arab Woman Blues
… I was watching “Al Itijah al-Muakess” (opposite directions) on Al-Jazeera (ARABIC – note the capitals here…for in English, you will not be viewing any of it). The theme — the Objectivity of the Western Media. Ah, that darned word again, Objectivity…gives me the creeps […] The crux of the matter, in one sentence. Is the Western media complicit in the crimes of its government – Yes or No ? […] So what do you think — Is it or is it not ? I, personally, don’t wish to influence you, one way or the other — seeing that you are already influenced. But allow me to recap… After all, there were no WMD’s and no ties to the big, bad wolf called Al-Qaeda, insofar as Iraq was concerned. Had the Western media actually bothered to verify the “alleged claims” – Gosh, you really love to use this sentence don’t you – “alleged claims”. Had the Western media actually bothered to verify for ITSELF, the claims that led to the ILLEGAL OCCUPATION (and by the way – all foreign occupations are illegal, so I don’t really understand why some bother writing it in capital letters), would that Occupation still have taken place ? Don’t you think that “embedded journalism” helped it, by any chance ? Embedded journalism in the 90's and in 2003…and beyond. Don’t you think that “embedded journalism” beefed and sexed it up too ? Mind you, the embedded media has been at it since 1948 insofar as PALESTINE is concerned…

Bush War Crimes are Jeopardizing Public Health in Afghanistan and Iraq
Review of “George W. Bush, War Criminal?” by Michael Haas
Sherwood Ross
As commander-in-chief of the military, former President George W. Bush was responsible for U.S. attacks on hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan, the mistreatment of their personnel and patients, and the denial of medical supplies to them and to the general populations of those nations, an authority on war crimes says. One of the most egregious of the Bush war crimes, the force-feeding of prisoners, is being continued by the Obama administration even though it is in violation of medical ethics and the first Protocol to the Geneva Conventions of 1977, the authority notes…

Israel to Worsen Prisoner Conditions to ‘Pressure Hamas’
As Prisoner Swap Negotiations Fall Through, Israel Looks For Leverage
Jason Ditz
Talks between Israel’s outgoing Kadima government and Hamas appear to have fallen through, and there will be no prisoner swap to free jailed Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in return for hundreds of Hamas detainees…But rather than pass the issue on to the Netanyahu government (which seems inevitable at any rate), Israel is now looking for ways to pressure Hamas into lowering their asking price: mostly by worsening the conditions the Hamas detainees are living under…

Rachel’s E-mails
Rachel Corrie
March 16, 2009 marked the sixth anniversary of the killing of the American peace activist Rachel Corrie. She was crushed to death by an Israeli military bulldozer in Rafah on March 16, 2003, a few days before the United States attacked Iraq. The twenty-three-year-old student from Olympia, Washington went to Gaza with the International Solidarity Movement. She was crushed to death by a US Caterpillar bulldozer that was run by the Israeli military. She had been trying to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home near the border with Egypt when she was killed. Eyewitnesses say she was wearing a fluorescent orange vest and in full view of the bulldozer’s driver. In a remarkable series of emails to her family, she explained why she was risking her life.

BASIS OF CONTEMPORARY CRITICAL THEORY OF CAPITALISM
by Dunja & Ljubodrag Simonovic
…The most dramatic truth is: capitalism can survive the death of man as a human and biological being. For capitalism a “traditional man” is merely a temporary means of its own reproduction. “Consumer-man” represents a transitional phase in the capitalism-caused process of mutation of man towards the “highest” form of capitalistic man: a robot-man. “Terminators” and other robotized freaks which are products of the Hollywood entertainment industry which creates a “vision of the future” degenerated in a capitalist manner, incarnate creative powers, alienated from the man, which become vehicles for destruction of man and life. A new “super race” of robotized humanoids is being created, which should clash with “traditional mankind”, meaning with people capable of loving, thinking, daydreaming, fighting for freedom and survival – and impose their rule over the Earth. Instead of the new world, the “new man” is being created – who has been reduced to a level of humanity which cannot jeopardize the ruling order…

Killer Commandos In Afghanistan
Moon of Alabama
…A convoy of angry Afghans from Maywand district arrived at the outskirts of Kandahar city yesterday with the bodies of three men in the back of two minibuses and a pickup truck. They said the men had been shot to death along with two others when U.S. Special Forces swept into the village of China in the eastern part of Maywand early Sunday morning… The U.S. military says the dead men were anti-government insurgents. The protesters say the men were a local mullah and several farm labourers…The group of about 100 protesters who travelled to Kandahar, most of them in Toyotas which are ubiquitous in Afghanistan, got as far as a traffic circle in a suburb on the western edge of the city where they were turned back by police. They pointed to the gunshot wounds in the dead men’s heads. All three shot in the head. Executed? The Special Operations troops are sweeping in by helicopter at night without knowledge of the regular Canadian and U.S. troops stationed in the area. They shot three people in the head, kill another two, take other as prisoners maybe never to return and vanish back into the night…

Rotted From the Head: High Crimes and Continuity in the American Imperium
Chris Floyd
…As we all know, the Obama Administration is now fighting strenuously in court to uphold this cynical Bush strategy (and others) to cover up high crimes — capital crimes — by the leaders of the government. Obama has offered the excuse that he is fighting for Bush in court because he doesn’t want to do anything that “would undermine or weaken the institution of the presidency.” But how would applying the law of the land “weaken the institution of the presidency”? Why do the president and his minions need the “power” to commit crimes and get away with them? For make no mistake: in these court cases, this is precisely the “power” that Obama is seeking to preserve. Why does he want that power, and the “state secrets” get-out-of-jail-free card that goes with it? The answer seems obvious: because he wants to use that power for himself, and to pass it on to subsequent managers of the empire. For Obama is an intelligent man: he knows that the empire cannot be managed, maintained — and expanded — without recourse to criminal actions on a vast scale…

He is world-renowned as an authority on international law and has authored and co-authored 20 books. Hamas: Israeli ‘manipulation’ stalled prisoner swap
Ma’an news
Israel is attempting to cover for its own manipulations by blaming Hamas for the failure of negotiations toward a prisoner exchange, a Hamas official said on Tuesday. Senior Hamas leader Salah Al-Bardawil accused Israel of altering the prisoner list at the last minute, changing the number of prisoners and the conditions their release. He said Israel sought to exclude some of the prisoners and deport others instead of releasing them to the West Bank and Gaza…

Former Israeli spy linked to Pentagon leak
Eli Lake, THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Uzi Arad, who is expected to serve as national security adviser in the next Israeli government, has been barred from entering the United States for nearly two years on the grounds that he is an intelligence risk. Mr. Arad, a former member and director of intelligence for the Mossad, Israel’s spy service, is mentioned in the indictment of Lawrence Franklin, a former Pentagon analyst who pleaded guilty in 2005 to providing classified information about Iran in a conversation with two employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)…

US Torture: Voices from the Black Sites
Mark Danner
…How should we begin to talk about this? Perhaps with a story. Stories come to us newborn, announcing their intent: Once upon a time… In the beginning… From such signs we learn how to listen to what will come. Consider: I woke up, naked, strapped to a bed, in a very white room. The room measured approximately 4m x 4m [13 feet by 13 feet]. The room had three solid walls, with the fourth wall consisting of metal bars separating it from a larger room. I am not sure how long I remained in the bed… A man, unnamed, naked, strapped to a bed, and for the rest, the elemental facts of space and of time, nothing but whiteness. The storyteller is very much a man of our time. Early on in the “War on Terror,” in the spring of 2002, he entered the dark realm of “the disappeared”—and only four and a half years later, when he and thirteen other “high-value detainees” arrived at Guantánamo and told their stories in interviews with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (reported in the confidential document listed above) did he emerge partly into the light…

Gaza family that lost 29 to Israeli offensive exploited by lawyer
Ma’an news
A Palestinian family that lost 29 members to the Israeli offensive on Gaza in January has been exploited by a notorious lawyer falsely claiming to represent them in a 200 million dollar lawsuit against the Israeli government…The Gaza-based Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), which is now representing the family, later told Ma’an that their lawyers had checked with the Nazareth court and found that no such lawsuit had been filed. “We were shocked” at the media reports of Fuqara’s lawsuit, said PCHR’s director, Jaber Wishah, adding that he worries the case could be damaging to the project of securing accountability for the dead in Gaza. PCHR is taking the position that the Israeli government should admit criminal responsibility in the case, and not merely compensate the survivors financially… A senior member (mukhtar) of the Samuni clan, Subhi Samuni, denied appointing Fuqara as their lawyer, and said that the family does not want to file a compensation lawsuit…

Gazans Struggle for Clean Drinking Water
Mel Frykberg
As environmental experts, NGOs and government officials gather in Istanbul this week to attend the Fifth World Water Forum, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has drawn attention to the critical water situation in Gaza. “ICRC teams are repairing water and sewage systems in Gaza that were badly damaged during the three-week Israeli military operation in January,” the ICRC says in a media release. “According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, one-fifth of the population had no direct access to drinking water, and relied on water purchased from private suppliers. Today, thousands of people still have no access to running water.”..

When Palestinian Villages Become Prisons: Beit Ommar
Written by Ahmad Jaradat, Alternative Information Center (AIC)
On the way from Jerusalem to Hebron lies the Palestinian village of Beit Ommar, home to 8,000 people. The village is located west of the main road, which is the historic link between Jerusalem and Bethlehem in the north and the Hebron District to the south. Like other area villages, it is well known for agriculture, and most of the residents depend on their land for income. The Israelis have confiscated much of the village land for the illegal Israeli settlements, especially for the Kfar Etzion illegal settlement bloc to the north of the village and Karmei Tsur to the south…

Red Cross: US tortured terror suspects

US military personnel and intelligence agents, acting on orders from the Bush administration, carried out brutal and systematic torture against 14 “high-value detainees” seized in the “war on terror,” a recently obtained report by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) proves. The confidential ICRC report is based on interviews with the 14 captives at the US naval base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, after they were transferred there in 2006 from a worldwide CIA gulag of “black sites” and secret flights. The Red Cross agreed that the resulting report would be made available only to a handful of top government officials…

Another E Jerusalem eviction: I have all my memories, good and bad, my hopes were born here
Lovisa Farrow and Kristen Ess
Time stands still in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood while waiting for the eviction orders to be implemented. The Hanoun family takes turns sitting in a car, parked by their house, looking out for the expected Israeli soldiers. It didn’t happen on this particular night, but the struggle for Palestinian justice is far from over. At midnight Sunday time was up, according to the Israeli courts, for two of the families in the neighborhood: forced evictions. However, neither family will voluntarily leave their homes under the mandate of the occupying Israeli administration. This is Palestine. Instead they are all waiting for the Israeli soldiers to take them out by force…

Once plentiful, chickens now rare in Gaza
Rami Almeghari writing from the occupied Gaza Strip, Live from Palestine
The continuing shortage of cooking gas due to Israel’s border closures, along with the destruction of at least seven major poultry farms during the recent military siege, has made an important food item scarce and unaffordable for most of the Strip’s 1.5 million residents. “Today [Friday, 13 March] is the first time in more than one month that I can bring this quantity of chicken for my clients. All the people who used to buy chickens could not afford to do so for the past several weeks, as the price of chicken has doubled. Just today, as the prices got lower somehow, some of my clients dared to buy,” explained Abdallah al-Bayoumi, 75, owner of a poultry store in the Nusseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip…
