Constraining Palestinian Resistance: Some Political and Economic Attempts
Dina Jadallah-Taschler
…Acknowledging these facts would go a long way in dealing with the reality of the Palestinian situation. In dealing with the multitudinous and multiplying constraints confronting the Palestinians, one would hope (probably in vain!) that Palestinian leaders of both Fateh and Hamas would notice that, despite the pomp surrounding their reconciliation talks in Egypt, they are actually fighting over crumbs. … For Palestinians’ sake, it would help if these “leaders” made an honest assessment of their past decisions and their consequences. They should realize that when war fails Israel in the achievement of its goals, it resorts to other means, both economic, and political. Instead of focusing on the crumbs, Palestinian leaders must insist on fundamentals: resistance, liberation, real sovereignty, solving the refugee crisis, and achieving the right of return (and equality) for every Palestinian…

Gaza fishing industry reeling
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs – Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN)
A combination of damage to fishing resources caused by the Israeli offensive, and a restriction on the zone in which Gazans are allowed to fish is reducing catches and adversely affecting people’s diets in Gaza, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). In January 2009 the Israeli authorities reduced the area in which fishermen can fish from six to three nautical miles from Gaza’s coastline. In Rafah (southern Gaza) fishing has almost completely stopped due to the damage inflicted on fishing gear and boats during the 22-day war which ended on 18 January…

Israeli settlers attack homes and stores in East Jerusalem
IMEMC
Palestinian sources reported on Wednesday that a group of extremist Jewish settlers attacked dozens of Palestinian homes and stores in East Jerusalem. The settlers were marching in the city and chanting slogans against Arabs and Palestinians, calling for their expulsion from the Holy City. The Israeli police did not attempt to intervene, and allowed the settlers to continue their march, which encouraged them to attack Palestinian property, local sources reported…

Taliban set to burn the Reichstag?
Pepe Escobar
…And what would Mullah Omar tell all these suddenly talkative Westerners? He would tell exactly what Mullah Omar’s close friend Mullah Mutassim, a former Taliban finance minister, told al-Samoud magazine two weeks ago: we want the US and NATO out of Afghanistan now, we want sharia law and we want absolutely no Western interference in our country…So what happens next? Well, the usual. The united Pakistani Taliban is helping to prepare the massive spring offensive directed by … Mullah Omar against the surging US plus NATO in Afghanistan. Cynics in Brussels bet that those at the NATO round table know deep inside that this weaponized arm of Western arrogance doesn’t stand a chance in the long run against built-for-war mujahideen who defeated everyone from Alexander The Great onwards…

The Neocons Strike Back
Robert Parry
The neoconservatives have demonstrated that their power in Washington remains strong as they have succeeded in keeping veteran diplomat Chas Freeman out of a top intelligence job. Freeman dropped out of the running for chairman of the National Intelligence Council, which oversees preparation of intelligence estimates about threats to the United States, after an intense campaign spearheaded by neocons angered over Freeman’s criticism of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians…

Israel-Palestine Conflict 101: Taking Off The Blinders In The U.S.
A.M. Khan
Now that Israel’s bombardment of Gaza is off the front page and the Gazans are left to deal with the aftermath outside of world media attention, it makes sense to step back and review how the Israel-Palestine conflict is depicted in U.S. mainstream media. This depiction shapes how the U.S. public views the recent events in Gaza. It also shapes how the public understands what constitutes a just resolution to the conflict. The nature of U.S. mainstream media coverage of events in Gaza and of the Israel-Palestine conflict renders Americans grossly misinformed. U.S. media representations are largely absent of historical context and omit the fact that for decades Israel has committed human rights violations against the Palestinian people and occupied their land…

HEYET Analysis Abu Ghraib Incident
Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq (AMSI)
The Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq (AMSI/HEYET) strongly denounced the tragic incident in Abi Ghraib which led dozens of innocent people dead and wounded. In its press release HEYET pointed out for attention to the conflict between the centres of the security forces in the district and conflict of interests between the current military leadership and their supporters and former leadership and their supporters who are behind this tragic incident. In the release HEYET said the information has importance for the place because at the area there is nobody to blow himself up at the midst of people. “Many of the victims were killed by the bullets of current government forces from the guard and police not during the explosion.” said HEYET…

On “Objectivity”
Layla Anwar, Uncensored Arabwomanblues
Someone told me the other day, that I needed to be more “objective” about Iraq… She added, in her typical Western analytical mind, her mind geared towards “enquiry and impartiality”, that “objectivity” would help me assess the situation better… She was trying to make me understand — my situation better…see it from a different perspective, a perspective that would neatly fit into her mind…or into whatever her mind can absorb, a rational empirical mind… “Let us put feelings aside”, she said…she was the detached ,impartial observer of our tragedy…of our carnage…and she wanted me to understand. Understand what ?My cells do not need to understand, they know…my eyes do not need to understand, they saw, my ears do not need to understand, they heard…Understand what ? That the color of blood is red ? That history has been erased and turned into ashes and modern ruins ? What is there to understand ? What is there to understand about bulging bellies and bulging eyes wasting away in radioactive toxicity ? What is there to understand about mass graves that are still being unearthed as I type…what is there to understand about a society torn apart, living behind tall walls and ghettoes…

Secret emails show Iraq dossier was ‘sexed up’
Intelligence chiefs criticised ‘iffy drafting’ of key document
By Nigel Morris, Deputy Political Editor
Secret Whitehall emails released yesterday provide damning new evidence that the notorious dossier making the case for invading Iraq was “sexed up”. They disclose that the intelligence services were sceptical over the “iffy drafting” of government claims that Saddam Hussein could mount a missile strike on his neighbours within 45 minutes of ordering an attack. Officials privately mocked assertions that the Iraqi president was covertly trying to develop a nuclear capability and wisecracked that perhaps he had recruited “Dr Frankenstein” to his supposed crack team of nuclear scientists…

Israel Bans Gaza Toilet Papers, Soap
IslamOnline.net & News Agencies
European and American officials are protesting its blocking of humanitarian aid, including harmless goods such as cheeses, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and toilet papers, from the sealed off Gaza Strip. “We’re certainly asking the Israelis questions about this,” a US official told Reuters on Wednesday, March 11. Aid groups complain of Israel’s restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian aid, even harmless goods such as soap and toilet papers, into Gaza. In one case, Israel blocked for weeks a World Food Program (WFP) shipment of chickpeas, used to make the Palestinian food staple hummus. Western officials also cite Israeli restrictions on imports of certain types of cheeses, toothbrushes and toothpaste…

Gaza: Border Areas Bombed Again
By Adam Morrow and Khaled Moussa Al-Omrani
Almost two months after the war on the Gaza Strip, the border area between the battered coastal enclave and Egypt continues to come under frequent Israeli aerial bombardment. Israeli officials say the strikes target cross-border tunnels used to smuggle weapons to Palestinian resistance factions. “Israel is still regularly launching air strikes on the border area,” Ibrahim Mansour, political analyst and executive editor-in-chief of independent daily Al-Dustour told IPS. “Such attacks represent a violation of all international rules and agreements, including the Egypt-Israel Camp David peace agreement.”..

US eyeing Iran as its NATO supply route?
Press TV, Iran
Iran “becomes the best possible US supply route to Afghanistan” as Kyrgyzstan closes the Manas base and Pakistan fails to protect its convoys. Following several attacks on NATO convoys in Pakistan’s Khyber Pass and the Kyrgyz parliament’s decision to close the Manas air base, which has been used by the US military to bring supplies into Afghanistan since 2001, American logistic experts were forced to look for an alternative supply route…Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, however, has already invited Iran to a conference on Afghanistan which will be held in Italy in June. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi responded to the invitation on Wednesday by saying that Iran was willing to become actively involved in the reconstruction of Afghanistan as well as working toward peace and stability in the country.
ran also helped the US in the war against the Taliban to the extent that former US special envoy to Kabul James Dobbin said “few countries were as helpful to the United States — in its early involvement in Afghanistan — as Iran.”…

Confirmed figures reveal the true extent of the destruction inflicted upon the Gaza Strip; Israel’s offensive resulted in 1,434 dead, including 960 civilians, 239 police officers, and 235 fighters.
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
The Israeli offensive launched on the Gaza Strip between 27 December 2008 and 18 January 2009 resulted in extensive death, injury and destruction throughout the Gaza Strip. Only now is the true extent of the devastation becoming apparent. The offensive took place in the context of an ongoing international armed conflict and belligerent occupation. International humanitarian law (IHL) lays down stringent, legally-binding, obligations regulating the conduct of hostilities. Of primary relevance is the principle of distinction, which obliges all Parties to the conflict to distinguish between combatants and non-combatants (including civilians). Civilians and civilian objects must be spared the effects of any hostilities to the greatest extent possible. This is the core premise on which IHL is founded. Consequent to this fundamental obligation, IHL also regulates the methods and means used in an attack. In short, all precautions must be taken to restrict any damage and destruction beyond that absolutely required by military necessity…

As many as 2,500 have been living in tents in the desert border area between Iraq and Syria. Or old wine in old bottles?
Missing links
AlQuds AlArabi today refers to a planned “new” round of talks between representatives of Maliki and certain Baathists, something the journalist describes as the culmination of two years of communications between the two sides, adding that this round of talks will start with the wing closest to Syria. All of which suggests that this process dates back to the January 2007 split between the loyalist Baathist party led by Izzat Ibrahim Al-Douri, and a breakaway group, based in Syria, led by Ahmed Yunis al-Ahmed. At the time, the loyalists said this was part of a prearranged scheme by the renegades to enter into the GreenZone political process eventually, with the agreement of Maliki…

Naval incidents highlight tense US-China relations
John Chan
A series of naval scuffles over the past week involving US and Chinese vessels has provoked a sharp spike in tensions between the two countries. While the issue was played down in talks yesterday in Washington between US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, the incidents underscore the potential for underlying frictions to flare up dramatically. According to the Pentagon, the incidents began last Wednesday when a Chinese fishing patrol boat used a high-intensity spotlight to illuminate the USNS Victorious, a surveillance ship operating in the Yellow Sea. The following day, a Chinese Y-12 maritime surveillance aircraft buzzed the vessel 12 times, flying overhead at an altitude of just 120 metres…

Lost Liberty Blues: Prisons, Profits, and the Banality of Evil
Chris Floyd
…As is well known, the United States of America locks up more of its people — both in bulk and by percentage — than any other nation on earth. According to the International Centre for Prison Studies at King’s College, London, there were 2,293,157 people behind bars in the United States at the end of 2007, the latest year for which totals are available. The incarceration rate is 756 prisoners per every 100,000 of the general population: a staggering rate that far surpasses the closest competitor, Russia, which jails 626 out of every 100,000 of its people, or Communist China, which jails 119 out of every 100,000. Indeed, America’s total prison population outstrips China’s by more than half a million — even though China’s population is five times larger than America’s…

PCHR condemns legal exploitation of victims of Israel’s latest offensive: any attempts to mislead its clients will not be tolerated
PCHR – Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) has discovered that Mohammed Fuqara, a Palestinian lawyer residing in Israel, has filed a case in Nazareth District Court on behalf of the al-Samouni family, that lost 27 of its members during the recent Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip. According to media reports, Fuqara is claiming to be the legal representative of members of the Samouni family and is currently pursuing legal proceedings to seek compensation on their behalf. PCHR reiterates it is the only legal representative of the al-Samouni family, as per the power of attorney that has been granted to PCHR by the family. PCHR acknowledges the value of attempts made by individuals or institutions to indemnify Palestinian civilians and seek compensation for material and human damages they have incurred. But the primary motivation of any such attempts must first be to investigate violations against the civilians, to bring the perpetrators to justice and to prosecute them, rather than simply to seek compensation…
