Ethnic cleansing in East Jerusalem
Marcy Newman writing from occupied East Jerusalem, Live from Palestine
Last week when US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held a press conference in Ramallah with Mahmoud Abbas, whose term as Palestinian Authority president officially expired on 9 January, a Washington Post reporter questioned her about the 143 Palestinian homes in Jerusalem that Israel intends to demolish in the coming weeks. She responded: “clearly, this kind of activity is unhelpful and not in keeping with the obligations entered into under the roadmap.” While some hailed this remark as a condemnation of Israel’s ongoing ethnic cleansing project, it appeared to many on the ground as callous and flippant. Since the press conference, the number of Palestinian homes Israeli occupation forces intend to level has increased from 143 to 179. It seems that the number of homes and families who will be forced from their homes, and many from their villages entirely, increases every day..

Destroyed farms in Gaza spark meat shortage
Bilal Badwan, Correspondent
Poultry is expensive nowadays in Gaza due to the massacre of thousands of chickens during the war. There is a shortage of meat and when there is any, it’s so expensive that ordinary Palestinians cannot afford it. “250,000 chickens – about 10 per cent of the total production – were killed during the war,” UN Development Programme (UNDP) agricultural officer Jihad Al Khatib, based in Gaza told Gulf News. “The number of poultry farms destroyed during the war will create a 25 per cent deficit in Gaza’s food security.”…

Gaza family sues Israel over deaths
AlJazeera.net
A Palestinian family is suing Ehud Olmert, Israel’s outgoing prime minister, and other government officials over the deaths of their relatives during the recent assault on Gaza. The al-Samouni family, which saw 29 of its members killed in the conflict, filed the case in Jerusalem on Tuesday, seeking $200m in damages for “criminal negligence”. More than 1,300 Palestinians died during Israel’s three-week war last December and January, one-third of them children…

Taliban say Obama’s call on moderates “illogical”
Reuters
Afghanistan’s Taliban on Tuesday turned down as illogical U.S. President Barack Obama’s bid to reach out to moderate elements of the insurgents, saying the exit of foreign troops was the only solution for ending the war. Obama, in an interview with the New York Times, expressed an openness to adapting tactics in Afghanistan that had been used in Iraq to reach out to moderate elements there. “This does not require any response or reaction for this is illogical,” Qari Mohammad Yousuf, a purported spokesman for the insurgent group, told Reuters when asked if its top leader Mullah Mohammad Omar would make any comment about Obama’s proposal. “The Taliban are united, have one leader, one aim, one policy…I do not know why they are talking about moderate Taliban and what it means?”..

The Martyrdom Of Mordechai Vanunu
By Eileen Fleming
The best understanding of a martyr is one who chooses to suffer, to die rather than renounce their principles. A martyr is also one who has given themselves up as a witness. The essence of Christianity is to bear witness to what Jesus was always on about; forgiveness, love, reconciliation and the intrinsic equality of all people. Within days of the announcement of a record 205 nominations for 2009’s Nobel Peace Prize, [one of several prizes endowed by Swedish industrialist and dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel] perpetual nominee Mordechai Vanunu declined the honor in a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee in Oslo: I am asking the committee to remove my name from the nominations…I cannot be part of a list of laureates that includes Simon Peres…Peres established and developed the atomic weapon program in Dimona in Israel…Peres was the man who ordered [my] kidnapping…he continues to oppose my freedom and release…WHAT I WANT IS FREEDOM AND ONLY FREEDOM…FREEDOM AND ONLY FREEDOM I NEED NOW…

Southward movements by Kurdish northern Iraq alarms Baghdad
World Tribune
The Kurdish autonomous region in northern Iraq has been moving toward a military confrontation with the government in Baghdad, a report said. The Center for Strategic and International Studies said the Kurdish Regional Government in northern Iraq appeared to be expanding south in a move that has alarmed Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki. In a report by former U.S. Defense Department official Anthony Cordesman, CSIS asserted that rising Kurdish-Arab tensions already blocked elections in four provinces in January 2009…

Thank you, George
STUART LITTLEWOOD
The Viva Palestina convoy’s arrival in Gaza has worked wonders. It will be seen as a landmark achievement in the struggle for liberty. Thank you, George, for making us British feel clean again. Thank you, George, for giving us back a measure of self-respect. For too many years our Israel-adoring politicians and government ministers have shamed us with their failure to stand up straight for justice in the Holy Land. Even those who claim to speak with God have endorsed Israeli oppression and supported the Zionists’ lust for land and racial supremacy…

Exxon aims for big role in Iraq’s oil sector
By Luke Pachymuthu
Exxon Mobil Corp is in constant dialogue with Baghdad to create the investment climate that would allow it to become a significant player in Iraq’s energy sector, Exxon’s chief executive said on Monday. The world’s largest publicly traded company is in the race for contracts to work on Iraq’s biggest oilfields. Iraq, which sits on the world’s third-largest oil reserves, needs billions of dollars of foreign investment to overhaul its oil sector and boost output after years of sanctions and war…

Saddam loyalists reject reconciliation calls
AFP
…”The Baath and its men reject … meetings, dialogue and agreement with the collaborators, spies and traitors,” said a statement on the party’s official Al-Basrah.net website. The rejection came in riposte to almost daily appeals from Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki for all Iraqis to unite to build a better future. But the Baath statement said: “Those who want reconciliation … must recognise that national resistance is the sole path towards liberation … and annul the political process in the shadow of the occupation.”…

U.S. Eyes Iran for Resupply of Afghan Forces
By RICHARD SALE (Middle East Times Intelligence Correspondent)
The administration of U.S. President Barack Obama is mulling a plan that would use Iranian territory to rescue the deteriorating logistics network currently used to supply U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, administration officials said. As first reported by the Iranian media, William Perry, secretary of defense under former U.S. President Bill Clinton and a high-level group of non-proliferation specialists held four meetings with Iranian diplomats in The Hague and Vienna last year to discuss the matter…

Egyptian leaders open Palestinian unity dialogue in Cairo
Ma’an news
Egypt’s intelligence chief, Omar Sulaiman, opened the first session of a Palestinian national dialogue in Cairo on Tuesday. Sulaiman called on conveners to avoid delay in restoring unity to Palestine, saying that time is up the essence. He suggested that faction leaders “forget about the past and focus on the future.” He also asserted the importance of reaching a national consensus government of highly qualified members that might not necessarily represent every faction…

Iran pushes to forefront
Arabs see Israeli-Palestinian issue slip on U.S. agenda
Jumana al-Tamimi SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s first official trip to the Middle East left many Arabs convinced that she is more interested in repairing U.S. relations with Iran than in resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict. “I don’t believe the Middle East is actually [President] Obama’s priority,” said Nader Saeed, a professor of sociology at the West Bank-based Birzeit University. “I believe East Asia and the axis of Afghanistan-Pakistan-Iran will be the stronger link in the chain.” Last week, Mrs. Clinton proposed a multilateral conference on Afghanistan to which Iran would be invited, opening the prospect for direct U.S.-Iranian engagement. Tehran said it would study the invitation once it was received, but the reaction of Iranian academics suggested that the response would be favorable…

China is the Key to America’s problems.
Peter Chamberlin
China and America are locked into an economic pact of mutually assured destruction, if either side falls or falters, then the other side sinks as well. China and Pakistan are working on a pact of mutual assured opportunity. In their symbiotic relationship (a cooperative, mutually beneficial relationship between two people or groups), China needs the resources that Pakistan needs to sell, basically the same business arrangement shared by the US and China, only conducted with a less threatening intensity…

GEORGE GALLOWAY: THE NOBLE MAN
By Khalid Amayreh
Unlike many politicians who would rather stay on the safe side, even if that means betraying their conscience, George Galloway represents a rare breed of morally-guided politicians who are willing to call the spade a spade even in the face of danger and brutality. The British lawmaker has displayed immense courage in speaking up against crimes and injustices inflicted by Israel, the United States and their European allies in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and Palestine. In 2003, Galloway was expelled from the Labor Party when a party body decided that the strong statements he had made in opposition to the invasion of Iraq by the US and its allies had brought the party into disrepute…

SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF: AN INTERVIEW WITH GLEN FORD ABOUT BARACK OBAMA
Part Two
Malcom Lagauche
…I sometimes think there is a great and cruel irony at work here in our recent history. At the very moment when I believe we can see, through the myths, the end of capitalism, as we have seen the death of the investment banks as we knew them, they are dead. They are zombies. All that might mean in terms of how long capitalism will maintain its edifice, at that very moment we get a Barack Obama. Such a clever man. Such an attractive candidate. And who appears to be an answer to African Americans’ historical dreams, then he arrives at this very juncture when the crack in capitalism is so evident, and as a result of his arrival, neutralizes the most consistently progressive group of citizens in the United States, black America, without whose activism there cannot be a viable progressive movement in the United States. In other words, at precisely the moment in history when we should be running as progressives, running through that crack in the wall of capitalism, we have been neutralized, and certainly we on the black side, and put to sleep by this singularly attractive, clever, and I think ultimately, dangerous, president…

Group Highlights ‘Memoricide’ in West Bank
Jonathan Cook
As spring sets in early, Israelis have been pouring into one of the country’s most popular leisure spots. Visitors to Canada Park, a few kilometres north-west of Jerusalem, enjoy its spectacular panaromas, woodland paths, mountain-bike trails, caves and idyllic picnic areas. A series of signs describe the historical significance of the landscape, as well as that of a handful of ancient buildings, in terms of their Biblical, Roman, Hellenic and Ottoman pasts. Few, if any, visitors take notice of the stone blocks that litter sections of the park. But Eitan Bronstein, director of Zochrot (Remembering), is committed to educating Israelis and foreign visitors about the park’s hidden past – its Palestinian history…

West “not winning” in Afghanistan – Biden
David Brunnstrom
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden appealed to NATO allies on Tuesday to help the United States tackle worsening security in Afghanistan, saying the alliance was struggling to deal with a threat to the West as a whole. “The deteriorating situation in the region poses a security threat not just to the United States but to every single nation round this table,” Biden told representatives of the 26-country military pact during a visit to Brussels. “We are not now winning the war, but the war is far from lost,” he told a news conference after three hours of talks…

Mohammad’s story
Eva Bartlett | In Gaza
An elderly man saw me walking the other morning. “Bless you, bless you,” he said, holding out his palm as I gave him 20 shekels. What has rendered a man in his late years impoverished and begging, in a manner Palestinians are not accustomed to? I followed him home yesterday. It took some doing, as the name he had told me, while correct, didn’t seem to register with his wife when my friend Mohammed called. Establishing that he was the same man I’d met on the street took some time two days ago. Then locating his home in a swirl of alleys after the Sahaa market area took more doing. But we finally reached it and I saw the same beaming older man, greeting us with the same enthusiasm and gratitude of two weeks ago…
