On International Woman’s Day Al Mezan Center Congratulates Palestinian Women and Calls on Women around the World to Strengthen their Solidarity with the National Struggle of Palestinian Women
Al Mezan Center For Human Rights
Today, Sunday 8 March, marks International Women’s Day. This international occasion comes at a time when Palestinian women are confronting the most severe economic, social and political conditions they have faced since the start of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories in 1967, and less than two months after the Israeli Occupation Forces’ military offensive on the Gaza Strip – an offensive which was unprecedented in its brutality – and amidst the continuing Israeli imposed siege and severe closures of the Gaza Strip. Palestinian women are bearing the brunt of these difficult conditions, as has been the case for many years…

Iraqi women suffering “silent emergency”, survey finds
IRIN News
Marking International Women’s Day on 8 March a new survey has painted a grim picture for Iraqi women who it says are suffering a “silent emergency” as they endure insecurity, poverty and a lack of basic services. Entitled “In Her Own Words: Iraqi women talk about their greatest concerns and challenges”, the survey was conducted in 2008 by aid agency Oxfam International in cooperation with the Iraqi women’s NGO al-Amal. It surveyed 1,700 women from five provinces: Baghdad, Ninevah, Basra, Kirkuk and Najaf. The survey found that continuing insecurity has devastated women’s physical wellbeing and greatly restricted their day-to-day lives. About 60 percent of respondents said security was their number one concern, despite an improvement in security since mid-2007. Some 55 percent said that they were directly or indirectly victims of violence since the US-led invasion in 2003 that toppled the government of former president Saddam Hussein…

Doctors struggling to treat Gaza war wounded
IRIN News
Mohammed Abu Shabah, aged 22, lies in al-Wafa rehabilitation centre in northern Gaza, paralyzed from the waist down after a missile fired by an Israeli drone on 11 January left pieces of shrapnel near his spine. Doctors at the centre, Gaza’s only rehabilitation hospital, fear removing them could lead to complete paralysis. “I was just walking down the street,” said Abu Shabah, recounting the incident near his home in Rafah. He was eventually sent to al-Ma’dee military hospital in Cairo for emergency care. He needs, his doctors say, a vasotrain machine to improve blood circulation to his limbs and a urodynamic machine to measure bladder capacity, but both machines are currently unavailable in Gaza…

Drought-stricken and internally displaced, many Afghans can’t even be assured of one good meal a day for themselves and their family, reported a Church World Service staff on Friday. “Life continues to be difficult for all Afghans, but the tens of thousands of displaced Afghans and returnees from Pakistan and Iran are particularly at risk,” says CWS Asia and Pacific Region Coordinator Marvin Parvez, who has also directed the CWS Pakistan/Afghanistan program…

Protesting against Israel doesn’t make you racist
Joanna Blythman
IS IT racist to criticise Israel ? Before we address that question, let’s flashback to last year’s Edinburgh International Festival. The scene is a concert in The Queens Hall attended by those solidly middle-class, older-than-average citizens who support live classical music, people of comfortable means who, though they complain about the cost, nevertheless stump up the hefty ticket price for an official Festival event. Douce and respectable, the audience settles down to a relaxing evening of Haydn, Smetana and Brahms, only to have the recital interrupted by middle-aged men and women, dotted among them, protesting about Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians shouting things like “End the Siege of Gaza”, and “Boycott Israel”…

Killing the Song: Unholy Alliances and Hate-Spawning Surges in the Terror War
Chris Floyd
…The further radicalization and destabilization of Pakistan is virtually guaranteed if Barack Obama continues on his announced path of military escalation in Afghanistan, egged on by such hawkish courtiers as Richard “L’il Kissinger” Holbrooke, Joe “Bankruptcy Bill” Biden and Hillary “The Obliterator” Clinton. Obama has embraced both the Terror War rhetoric and most of the Terror War policies of his murderous predecessor; he has also retained the Terror War’s military leadership as well…

Suddenly, Home Was Gone
Eva Bartlett
Dates in the calendar to mark the rights of women mean little to Manwa Tarrabin (56) and her two daughters. They have lost home, and any rights to it. Until Jan. 17, they were living in a small bungalow in the Al-Amal quarter of Beit Hanoun, within 200 metres of Gaza’s eastern border, in a region declared by the Israeli authorities a ‘closed military zone’. Prior to the three weeks of Israeli air, sea and land attacks on Gaza it had been a tidy home at the top of a slight rise, surrounded by open fields and a smattering of olive and fruit trees. Following the withdrawal of Israeli troops, the house is a pancake of angles and debris, one of 80 homes demolished in the Beit Hanoun border area…

Obama and Israel’s Military: Still Arm-in-Arm
Stephen Zunes
…Currently, Obama is on record supporting sending up to $30 billion in unconditional military aid to Israel over the next 10 years. Such a total would represent a 25% increase in the already large-scale arms shipments to Israeli forces under the Bush administration. Obama has thus far failed to realize that the problem in the Middle East is that there are too many deadly weapons in the region, not too few. Instead of simply wanting Israel to have an adequate deterrent against potential military threats, Obama insists the United States should guarantee that Israel maintain a qualitative military advantage. Thanks to this overwhelming advantage over its neighbors, Israeli forces were able to launch devastating wars against Israel’s Palestinian and Lebanese neighbors in recent years…

Khazindar warns of total paralysis of vital sectors in Gaza
Palestinian Information Center
Dr. Mahmoud Al-Khazindar, the deputy chairman of the society of owners of petrol stations in Gaza Strip, has warned of a big crisis that would paralyze vital sectors in the Strip if Israel continued to ban entry of fuel. Khazindar in a press statement published on Sunday said that Israel was linking entry of fuel supplies to the progress in the prisoners exchange deal and to the improvement in the security conditions (firing of missiles). He described such a policy as a new pressure tool on the Palestinians that would lead to doubling their sufferings…

Hatred has turned him into a Jew – Deconstructing Nick Cohen
Gilad Atzmon, Palestine Think Tank
In an article published by the Jewish Chronicle, Observer columnist Nick Cohen argued that ‘Hatred turned him into a Jew’. Initially, I was rather amused by the revealing confession. Cohen must have a lot of hatred in him. He was one of the very few supporters of the illegal war against Iraq within the British media. He really believed that liberating the Iraqis was the way forward. Incidentally he also possesses an incredible record of Islamophobic ranting. Hence, I at first tended to interpret Cohen’s declaration as an acknowledgment that it was the loathing towards others which he finds in himself that made him into a Jew. I was obviously wrong, Cohen was quick to clarify that it is actually other people’s hatred, specifically that of the ‘British Left’ that ‘indulges antisemitism’, which made him ‘feel Kosher’…

March 7, 2009: 1 US Soldier, 11 Iraqis Killed; 20 Iraqis Wounded
Margaret Griffis, Antiwar.com
At least 11 Iraqis were killed and 20 more were wounded in the latest violence. One U.S. soldier was killed during an attack in Salah ad Din province as well. Meanwhile, the prime minister called for a stronger, non-sectarian government but the arrests of several men left his critics wondering whether Maliki means what he says. In brighter news, a pilgrimage brought millions to Samarra without incident…
