Palestinians are the Priority: an open statement of commitment to the Palestinian Solidarity Cause
Mary Rizzo
There are individuals within the Palestinian solidarity movement seeking to create divisions by:
* deliberately shifting focus away from Israel’s war crimes and its supremacist Zionist ideology;
* imposing unilateral agendas by presenting both sides as victims;
* sabotaging service to the just cause of the Palestinian people;
* ignoring the issue of right of return for the Palestinians;
* utilising the platform of the Palestinian discourse to argue about anti-Semitism, which is not a Palestinian problem and not created by Arabs.
Our primary and single concern is solidarity with the Palestinian people…

All Be Aware

…The fundamentals of the Palestinian struggle are clear and not complicated:
– Palestine is not that section that was occupied in 1967, or Gaza or Jericho. Palestine is from the River to the Sea and from the Lebanese border to Egypt. – Palestine is Arab, it’s the heart of the Arab World, and thus are the Palestinian people. – The Palestinian struggle is not about religion. We have nothing against the Jewish faith or the Jews. – No just and acceptable solution to our cause will have in it anything less than a complete liberation of Palestine and the return of the Palestinian people to their homes and villages and towns that they or their parents or grandparents were forced to leave in the early part of the last century…

Pakistan militants shoot down drone: officials
AFP
Taliban militants on Saturday shot down a suspected drone aircraft in a Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan, officials said. Residents and a local police official said two drones were flying low over a village in the South Waziristan tribal district when one of them was hit by militant fire. “We heard the firing by Taliban and then a drone fell down,” tribal police official Israr Khan told AFP…

Iraq: Reconciliation under raids and arrests
Roads to Iraq
Contrary to the western media, Arab media is not very much impressed by Maliki’s reconciliation offer (with exception of the Green Zone newspaper Al-Sabaah saying the government is already in negotiations with the opposition) confirmed by Al-Hayat. We have one report in English about the arrests of former Ba’athists, but that’s not all: Al-Sharqiya TV reported the killing of a General in the former Iraqi army in Mosul, Fatehoon reported about a major raid and arrests campaign is in its fourth day in Baghdad targeting retired military in the former army, former Ba’athists and former Awakening members…

Iran’s olive branch to US
Reuters
In a significant development, Iran indicated on Saturday that it was ready to break bread with the United States. An official spokesman declared Iran’s readiness to help Afghanistan as it battles a growing insurgency by the Taliban. United States should extend an invitation for a meeting on Afghanistan, he said. “If America and European countries and others need to use Iran, they should give us (the invitation). We will review it with the approach that we are ready to offer any help to Afghanistan,” the spokesman added…

Afghans protest after overnight raid kills 4
AP
Afghans are demonstrating in front of a line of U.S. military vehicles in eastern Afghanistan to protest what officials say are the deaths of four Afghans during an overnight U.S. raid. Khost Province Deputy Gov. Tahir Khan Sabari says the raid killed four people and wounded two. Protesters also said several Afghans were arrested. Sabari says the raid took place without the participation of Afghan forces despite a recent agreement saying Afghans would take part in raids to prevent civilian casualties and help with cultural issues…

When people go looking for crumbs…
Body on the Line
I find it rather shocking that Palestinian and pro-Palestinian bloggers are salivating over this new short animated video by yoni goodman who was the director of animation for the academy-award nominated film waltz with bashir. it is produced by some new project called the closed zone, which is affiliated with gisha, an israeli organization working on freedom of movement issues. i wasn’t going to post it, but given that i haven’t seen any critiques of it i feel that i should…

Guantanamo prison worse since Obama election: ex-detainee
AFP
A freed Guantanamo Bay prisoner has said conditions at the US detention camp in Cuba have worsened since President Barack Obama was elected, claiming guards wanted to “take their last revenge.” Binyam Mohamed, who became the first detainee to be transferred out of Guantanamo since Obama took office, also said British agents “sold me out” by cooperating with his alleged torturers, in his first interview since being released to be published Sunday…

Iraq’s Unspeakable Crime: Mothers Pimping Daughters
Rania Abouzeid, Times
She goes by “Hinda,” but that’s not her real name. That’s what she’s called by the many Iraqi sex traffickers and pimps who contact her several times a week from across the country. They think she is one of them, a peddler of sexual slaves. Little do they know that the stocky, auburn-haired woman is an undercover human rights activist who has been quietly mapping out their murky underworld since 2006. That underworld is a place where nefarious female pimps hold sway, where impoverished mothers sell their teenage daughters into a sex market that believes females who reach the age of 20 are too old to fetch a good price. The youngest victims, some just 11 and 12, are sold for as much as $30,000, others for as little as $2,000…Nobody knows exactly how many Iraqi women and children have been sold into sexual slavery since the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003, and there are no official numbers because of the shadowy nature of the business. Baghdad-based activists like Hinda and others put the number in the tens of thousands. Still, it remains a hidden crime; one that the 2008 US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report says the Iraqi government is not combating…What is happening in Iraq today reveals how far a once progressive country has regressed on the issue of women’s rights…

Gaza man witnesses soldiers executing his father
Saed Bannoura – IMEMC
“They fired at him… then a number of soldiers approached his wounded body and fired again to make sure he was dead”. This was not a fighter, not an armed man that the soldiers wanted to neutralize; this is a story of an aged man who was executed by Israeli soldiers east of Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. Resident Mubarak Ahmad Al Shareehy, 34, tells the story of how he witnessed the soldiers executing his father during the war on Gaza…

Generic Invader Nonsense: Obama on Iraq
Media Lens
As a presidential candidate, Barrack Obama described the war in Iraq as one that “should never have been authorised and never been waged.” On February 27, as president, Obama saw it differently. He told US troops at Camp Lejeune, a Marine Corps base in North Carolina: You have fought against tyranny and disorder. You have bled for your best friends and for unknown Iraqis. And you have borne an enormous burden for your fellow citizens, while extending a precious opportunity to the people of Iraq. Under tough circumstances, the men and women of the United States military have served with honor, and succeeded beyond any expectation…

Audio slideshow: Homeless in Gaza
BBC News
Raed al-Atamna’s family’s six houses were destroyed in the recent Gaza conflict, as well as the cars he uses to earn his living as a taxi driver. With nearly 3,000 families homeless, rented accommodation is scarce in Gaza – Mr Atamna’s pregnant wife and seven children are now staying with relatives, while he sleeps in a corrugated metal shack next to his ruined house. The Israeli military says it destroyed buildings because of “substantial operational needs”, for example because of booby traps or militants in them, but Amnesty International says “wanton destruction” occurred, in violation of international law…

For A workers Solution!
For Employment, Welfare, Health Care and Education!
Hussein Al-alak, Iraq Solidarity Campaign
The Iraq Solidarity Campaign is calling upon all workers, to demonstrate their solidarity with the toiling masses of occupied Iraq, in particular with the Teachers Union who are facing hardship and intimidation from the forces of reaction in the US protected Green zone and who are seeking to consolidate the tools of oppression through the hostile take over of our workers organisations. We reject all forms of repressive acts, from those who have brought barbarism to the borders of Iraq and through whose actions have witnessed the vast devastation to our glorious working classes, who throughout time have demonstrated their devotion and loyalty to the people of Mesopotamia and through whose actions have contributed to the construction and development of science and nationhood…

U.S. forces kill citizen, relatives say was executed
Aswat al-Iraq
U.S. forces handed over the body of a man who was shot dead to the Iraqi police in Baiji city, claiming that he was a gunman who attacked a U.S. patrol that killed him, a source from Salah al-Din police said on Saturday, while the dead man’s relatives said that the forces killed him in front of his family. “The dead man was in his thirties, and he was shot in the chest,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency. “The U.S. side of the story is that he was a gunman who attacked a U.S. patrol in central Baiji suburb (35 km north of Tikrit), and the patrol responded and killed him instantaneously,” he said…

Israel annexing East Jerusalem, says EU
Rory McCarthy, The Guardian
A confidential EU report accuses the Israeli government of using settlement expansion, house demolitions, discriminatory housing policies and the West Bank barrier as a way of “actively pursuing the illegal annexation” of East Jerusalem. The document says Israel has accelerated its plans for East Jerusalem, and is undermining the Palestinian Authority’s credibility and weakening support for peace talks. “Israel’s actions in and around Jerusalem constitute one of the most acute challenges to Israeli-Palestinian peace-making,” says the document, EU Heads of Mission Report on East Jerusalem…

Feltman: Syria Can Play ‘Constructive’ Role in the Mideast
Hanan Awarekeh, Al-Manar
Syria can play “an important and constructive role” in the Middle East! Believe it or not, this testimony was not given by any of Damascus’s allies, however it was given by its long-time foe, USA. Senior US envoys and top Syrian officials met in Damascus Saturday about how to defuse past tension. Jeffrey Feltman said that he and fellow envoy Daniel Shapiro held the “view that Syria can play an important and constructive role in the region,” after their talks with Foreign Minister Walid Mouallem and other Syrian officials…

All Be Aware
Yousef Abudayyeh
The surge in the “Pro-Palestinian” activities in the United States after the Zionist massacre in the Gaza Strip is at least suspicious if not alarming. I am not saying this because I do not want the support for our people to be the norm in this country, but because I see who is riding this wave, and understand that those elements and what they represent are still dangerous and their agenda will not die unless we reach liberation and return…

The Latest in the Senseless Persecution of Dr. Sami Al-Arian
KABOBfest
The government’s ceaseless persecution of Dr. Sami Al-Arian would be comical if it were not so disgustingly vacuous and damaging to him, his family and the Arab-American and Muslim communities. A lone ranger prosecutor has been playing dirty with Dr. Al-Arian’s life all in order to save face after a disastrous failure to prosecute the former professor at the University of South Florida…

Palestinian PM submits resignation
AlJazeera.net
Salam Fayyad, the Palestinian prime minister, has submitted his resignation to Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president. Announcing the decision on Saturday, Fayyad said the resignation would take effect after the formation of a Palestinian national unity government. He, however, said he would quit no later than the end of March. Fayyad’s announcement comes ahead of the resumption of power-sharing talks between Abbas, who heads the Fatah movement, and his rivals from the Palestinian Hamas group. His decision to resign is being seen as a goodwill gesture towards Hamas, as the group had repeatedly demanded that Fayyad step down. “This step comes in the efforts to form a national conciliation government,’’ Fayyad said. However, Hamas officials were dismissive about his resignation. Fawzi Barhoum, a spokesman for the group, said Fayyad’s government was unconstitutional and worked for private interests…

East Jerusalem Settlements Ratchet Up Tensions
Analysis by Helena Cobban*
As the fires of human misery continue to smolder in Gaza, the situation in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem is emerging as another potentially explosive issue in, and far beyond, the Middle East. The future of the city is considered an issue of prime importance to both Palestinians and Israelis, as well as to their supporters around the world. Jerusalem-related tensions have sparked several earlier rounds of violence between the two peoples, including when former (and future) Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu started work on the new East Jerusalem settlement of Har Homa in 1997…

Obama’s backsliding on torture
Cori Crider
Not long ago, I marched across the gravel of Guantánamo Bay’s Camp Echo with two overstuffed grocery sacks and tramped up the stairs of the hut where a prisoner sat, shackled and waiting. A guard swung open the grate. I went in, heaved the bags on the table, and greeted Binyam Mohamed with all the brightness I could muster. Not that I expected Binyam, the most abused of Reprieve’s thirty clients in Gitmo, to show much jubilation. It is hard to buoy a man who has experienced years of physical and psychological torture. Under the classification rules, I’m not allowed to write a word that Binyam said in reply. I can say that when I bade him farewell and promised to catch him on the outside, he shrugged and smiled a sardonic smile. And perhaps just a spark of hope in his eyes…
